Hello Folks,
I am a Recognized XDA Developer and I work on Cyanogenmod for Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 which is an exact similar device to Galaxy Tab P1010 (TI OMAP3630).
We have got fully working CM9 and CM10 on Galaxy SL, with few minor issues with video recording and laggy interface. However, we are working on porting the new 3.0.8 kernel that was released on omapzoom. This new kernel would help us resolve issues that we have been affecting ICS and JB releases.
So far, we have managed to get the kernel booting with few basic stuff like Touchscreen, Panel, Audio, Keypad, Vibrator working. Galaxy SL is exactly similar to Galaxy Tab P1010 WIFI and it essentially shares the same kernel and I suspect that most of the userspace stuff also should be the same. I was informally asked by cdesai if I was interested to develop for this device, but I had to turn my back since I wasn't really having the time for it.
However, since we are working on a new kernel for Galaxy SL from scratch, I would really like to take the initiative of making something useful for P1010 too, keeping in mind the small user base for Galaxy SL, we thought our work could be useful for P1010 and would benefit more people.
We would like developers working on P1010 to come forward and let us know the current status of development on this device (Kernels, Custom Roms, Attempts at CM, etc), so that we could plan something accordingly. Also, we would be interested to know how many people actually own this device and would like to have CM over it. Let's use this topic as a playground!

This is fantastic news, and thanks for considering the P1010 as everywhere else I've looked hasn't really got anywhere. While I'm afraid I won't be able to help with any of the development (I wish I could, but I'm too busy as it is), I can use my device for testing. Keep it up, and I can't wait until it's all sorted.
Personally, I'd love to have any version of CM on this tablet, as Android 2.3.6 is looking really dated now, and the interface is laggy compared to that of Android 4.1 devices. I've upgraded to CM10 on my Galaxy S and it's so much smoother than it was, I can only hope the same is possible for this device, as it's certainly capable.
Also, I know Motofoca over on the MadTeam forums was working on it (which you already know, most likely), but he's not mentioned anything towards progress in a while. I can't post a link though, considering I've got less than 10 posts, so you'll have to google it.
Any help I can give is gladly offered, now when it comes to coding I am rusty... In fact I think the rust has extra layers of rust but know what I am looking at and can spot the bugs and offer suggestions.
I have two of these and still think the actual build of them is excellent so would love to have some decent internals

I'm owning a P1000 too (as per the question of the OP) and I would really like to have a current CM 10.1 release with kernel 3.0 on it... I'm a java developer with some C++ background but I didn't have the time yet to dive into android development (neither high nor low level)..
If there is anything to test or provide info about just ask..

I don't know whether this was a typo or not, but you can get CM10 or CM9.1 (stable) for the P1000 already. Just look on the cyanogenmod site for the P1. This is for the P1010 which is the WIFI only version of that tab and doesn't yet have a release of cyanogenmod for it.

Hi, I have it. I also have some experience with kernel on Omap4 (I developed for 3.0.x and 3.2.x), but very little time to share at the moment.
Please post here in this thread any update or request.
Thanks

Alright lets get the record straight. Has anyone tried the kernal patch that puts your mem on a partition on the sd card. Supposidly this boosts performance out of this world. Please post here if you have tried this.
Secondly, we need to attract some developers. I'm willing to donate if anyone wants to code for us. We got a great user base and a really good product. Im conviced the captivate is by far one of the better phones from the galaxy s lineup. If any one knows some developers, introduce them tot his godly beast and let them know there are people out here willing to pay for good quality fixes and roms.
I was thinkin about asking for help from the guys running international s. We could post and ask in the xda area and also modaco and androidforums which have big communities as well.
Any other ideas on how to attract developers? Post here.

I'm down to donate as well and do anything I can to add to the cause. I really hope this phone takes off cause it is great. I think we have a good chance that a lot of the N1 devs might just come over to this phone and if not they should be getting the Vibrant and I doubt that it will be much trouble to port over to Captivate.
Err why is it better lol? all the samsung galaxy S phones are exacly the same internaly...none its better than the other, the only difrence is the lack of flash/camera and keyboard from the other variants.

Image, Image, Image. If the galaxy lineup were real life siblings, the captivate would be the only one going to the prom. It also sports fewer gps issues than the vibrant and galaxy s. Ive also seen way less people complain about lag in these forums than the ones for the vibrant and galaxy s (and we have more viewers here than on the vibrant page).
When devs see this device they should be seeing potential.

All of these so called "issues' are software based, its samsung ****ty touchwiz UI that lags like ****ing hell, not the device hardware, and yes i do agree that the captivate is the sexiest of them all.
Im pretty sure it would be painless to port over Vibrant or Galaxy S fixes to the Captivate. Internally they are the same except for a few minor differences like rafyvitto said which wouldn't be that hard to fix. I'm brushing up on my Java skills and learning about the internals of Android right now. Ive been a iPhone person for a while. Hopefully soon I can be of some help and get hacking on Captivate. From what I've seen and read we have a good phone to develop for because its easily rooted and has an unlocked bootloader. I've also heard that the drivers for the Galaxy S lineup are encrypted, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that. What we need is a dump of the current ROM and also we need a better recovery system like Amon_RA's recovery. The source for his recovery system is on GitHub so we could try and port it over to the Galaxy S lineup.
shouldnt samsung be releasing source for drivers any day now? I thought the word around town was that they were being open with the community on this jazz.

They have already released the source code for the Galaxy S here. They don't have to release the source for the drivers because they are proprietary, but from what ive read the binaries for the drivers are in that download so all someone would have to do in link them in. I just don't know if the drivers are encrypted meaning that it has to be an official samsung ROM for them to work. Hopefully not because that would make cooking new ROMs a hell of alot easier.
we should ask the modaco guys for help and info. I dont think we can use the source or drivers from the galaxy s international. I think someone tried doing stuff that way and bricked.
i could be wrong tho
Would also be willing to donate to the cause. The only reason I didn't buy an iPhone 4 is the developers for this phone.
@wesgarner is on the CyanogenMod team / TeamDouche and has ordered a Vibrant.
We might be able to encourage him to port the latest CyanogenMod build once he has the Vibrant's build completed.
He purchased a Vibrant and I think a laptop to do the work. I've already sent him an email about being a beta tester for the Captivate.
Just remember the devs have a life outside of working on phones! Don't ask for timelines - whether you donate or not!
Wes is working on a port for the slide and then he'll be working on the Vibrant.
While the hardware is similar - the software isn't exactly the same. I was messing around with the MMS.apk today and tried to replace my corrupted one with the one from the Vibrant - did NOT work.
Also, the device is capable of having a REAL FMRadio. The Euro versions have an FMradio.apk. I pushed it to the Captivate - but, the Captivate will need the drivers (to build into a kernal) for the FMRadio to work. But, this is entirely possible.
So, yes the hardware is basically the same or similar - it won't necessarily easy. If any of you remember, LOL - this will be akin to porting the N1 build over to the Desire - I think.
The first thing to go should be that awful samsung UI lol. I think the challenge will be porting ROMs for all these different Galaxy S models. I saw this coming when I read the device would make it to all four major carriers in the US plus.
thanks shane, i also heard another dev recently purchased a captivate, do you know anything about this? i'd like to support his endeavors.
Yea I read over in the Vibrant forums that a dev just got a captivate and is working on a recovery. They also have wes working on the Vibrant so hopefully they get cookin on some ROMs. It won't be that much of a hassle to port them over to the captivate. I would advise not fooling around too much with your phone because someone has already messed up his/her phone. They will either have to take it into ATT store and replace it or wait for a dump of the original ROM to come out.
I have tired the MoDaCo rom and it does (kinda - not brick) work with the SGH-I897 (captivate model), I was able to use it to remove the ATT crapware and nearly everything seems to be working. Phone reports its self as Model Number: GT-I9000 in the about phone tab.
One very IMPORTANT problem - I am having difficulty making outgoing phone calls.
Things that I can confirm work:
Bluetooth file transfer
3g data
GSM phone calls (incoming calls work)
Camera
Audible app, pandora ect.
SMS outgoing and incoming messages
Pretty much everything I have tested on the phone except making outgoing phone calls (important as it is a phone after all). So DON'T use this ROM yet, and if you do make a backup.
Hope this helps.
Well this is it guys. Prof that Honeycomb doesn`t have hardware requirements.
Does not need a dual procesor to run. In fact Spacemoose1 made something for us, to bad it didn`t finish, but he promise to come back with something new and good.

He said about a month ago that he is working for porting or makeing working Honeycomb 3.2 for GTab`s, becouse has less to work do to suporting 7" screens that 3.2 brings. But i didn`t hear nothing then and i`m not shure if he abandon the project or is involve in others to and doesn`t have time.
I thank him even if he abandon the project becouse he was the only one that has macking working and i`ve tested on my Tab.
Pray to do another port of 3.2

That way you wont feel stupid after a bunch of people tell you it has already been posted...in January.
last i heard HC was abandoned because of every1 nagging the devs about it. but that was for the cdma version. maybe we'll have better luck with the gsm devs.
Judging by what was said at google IO ice cream sandwich (ics for the puropose of this) is going to replace honeycomb and gingerbread and it wouldn't surprise me if cm8 (or whatever it is) is based on ics which may come to the galaxy tab
NOTE: these are presumptions which may not be correct so don't quote me on this!!
Wow really!? Totally amazing thanks for posting guy!
This is great
I just updated the GT to Gingerbread 2.3.3 and its working much better now
wonder what to expect from the Tab with honeycomb
Raps
Is this even worth doing though, Its not stable?
I would wait for a future more stable version, can anybody else comment?
mmk to clear up a bit of stuff here Spacemose1 is no longer doing HC no 3.0 not even 3.2 no questions asked so dont bother him about it. CDMA version was picked up by spacemoose1's partner in crime Oldmacnut (self proclaimed Very Green Developer) hes doing his best with what hes got. Recently there was alot of whinning and crying about HC so he intended to shut the project down for good
Long story short cooler heads prevail and he decided to pick up on HC again. On 10/1/2011 HC for CDMA only due to lack of a gsm tablet was taken from Alpha to Beta Status offering a "possible 3g fix" maybe more but the zip file is corrupt so a hemidall file's are supposed to drop for us soon.
So, does the honeycomp can run on Samsung Galaxy tab of 7 inches?
Do you know a site where you can download all Honeycomp roms from all the world?
Do you know a guide to upgrade the gingerbread to honeycomp version?
Do you know how to re-enable the light from keys menu (menu, home, back, search)?

Try button backlight widget from market.
Sent from my Tab using a pigeon.
ics will most likely replace honeycomb,
but until then
download honeycomb launcher, ripple lock & honeybread theme(if your on boca, cm7 or MIUI) from the market
Unless the the amazing guys in the dev section can do something deemed impossible by the manufacture, without any sort of actual source code, its the closest you'r going to get.
I think the developers love to make it stable and usable.. I really support those guys who is trying to port HC to galaxy tab. I'ma GSM user. Hope someone can make HC for GSM galaxy tab too.
google has said honeycomb was rushed out & will never be open source. With ICS on the horizon it makes no sense to push for honeycomb.
Is there a point of installing HC on our out dated Tabs now???
What is the point of upgrading software when hardware isn't par?
I feel the same about GB as well, I feel like Froyo runs best on the Tab.
But that's just my humble opinion, dont take offense or defensive.

Most devs don't develop for a device they don't own.. Maybe start a thread in the 7.0 Plus area asking if someone has one to donate and / or raise cash to buy a dev one..
We are pretty lucky with the 10.1 as we have some of the best devs on XDA here..
I know a few devs were tempted by the 7 Plus (an Exynos Tab? Sounds great! At least at first) but then were turned off by the AR6000 driver source code fiasco.
A closed-source binary module that has been identified to be the root of documented stability problems for a device is a developer's nightmare, and a great way to completely kill its desirability for a developer.
I was considering the 7 Plus, but the AR6000 driver mess made me decide to wait for a device that Samsung didn't **** up.
Not like I'd be much benefit - you already have a very good kernel developer and I've given him a whole pile of pointers.

Greatly appreciate your help. I personally own a 10.1 but purchased a 7+ as well for a custom vehicle install.
I understand DEV's don't normally dev on a device they don't have. But it does happen...quite a bit on some devices. Just trying to wrussle up some love is all.
Thank guys
The ability to do blind development is highly dependent on how similar a device is to one the developer owns.
For example, I finally started blind developing I9100 kernels because the difference is incredibly small and you can compile for both I9100 and I777 with just one defconfig change.
The Tab 7 Plus is completely and totally different from anything else out there, and the presence of closed-source modules makes blind development nearly impossible even if there were similar hardware.
i'm wondering what would be the best choice of CM9 from other devices to get the port from?
SGSII? NOTE?
please advice.
Seems note has the near the same hardware spec with 7.7, but s2 has the official 4.03 from samsung
Sent from my GT-P6800 using XDA Premium HD app
I started from the s2 source (see the thread in the dev-section), unfortunately I have gotten really busy with work so I won't really be able to put much time into it right now. If you are interested in working on it, go look at the repos I posted in that thread. I've most recently been trying to get the touch to work properly, however, the driver for it in the 7.7 source code is a complete mess, and more complicated than other drivers that have been fixed for ics.
I have GT-P6800, does same repository apply to it?
All but the android_device_samsung_p6810 should, and that last one should be easy to convert. If you are interested in working on it, I would suggest forking the common ones so that we can share our work easily.
I'm interested in working on a P6800 too.
First of all sorry if this has been asked many times, I haven't found exact answers.
What is stopping GT-P7500 getting ICS stable and camera working as it should? As owener of this model I am very dissapointed with this model stock software and I am placing my hopes on ICS from any source (I hsve a modded Honeycomb which runs many times better than stock but still I am not happy since the best I found working for me was a ROM for the P7510 losing 3g support).
Is it Samsung not releasing drivers they should?
Is because of Nvidia not releasing Tegra2 drivers?
Or.. for example CyanogenMod team have all they need and it is a matter of time?
Thanks in advance!
First off I feel your pain but try and understand how hard the Cyanogenmod guys work. They provide an amazing product for free so patience is key.
That being said I have been running the p4 snapshots of ics on my GT-P7500 for awhile now and it runs beautifully minus the camera. Realistically you aren't going to use the camera that much anyways on a tablet.
It runs smooth and flawlessly and has really impressed me so far.
Find the link to Droid basement that gets you to the snapshots. Give it a try it can't hurt. You can find the link in this thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1461240&page=140
I would post the full link but I don't have enough posts yet.
Enjoy!
Or you can try the Overcome ROM (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1348533), runs Android 3.2, but is very smooth if you combine it with the kernel provided by pershoot (forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138167)
Thanks for the answer guys.
My queries were more to find out if the delay is because Samsung's fault for not releasing drivers for the community.
Of course for the cyanogenmod team I have all the patience in the world and my utmost respect for them, In fact all my hopes are in the devs community like them instead of samsung or htc (I own a desire), etc. for taking care of the devices I own For me it's clear which is the priority of most manufacturers.
Sorry to hijack this, but does anyone who's used the current ICS editions for the P7500 know if exchange email works "fully" (with calendar etc...) when I tried one of the first ROMs, this wasn't working.
Those you have live/hotmail accounts and have it setup as an exchange account should be able to confirm this one way or another.

We need propriatery video/camera libs from samsung to work in ics, with tegra libs that has the specific video/camera libs compiled in. So we need libs from both,my understanding in any case, and that is only going to happen once an ics rom gets released/leaked.

3G works
I have a P 7500, and 3g works perfectly well.
So does the WI-FI, tethering etc.
I tried to have CM on my 10.1, but can't get it through, running AOKP M5 now on it, everything works fine on AOKP ICS, so you can try it, U will get addicted to it
