unchangeable id code inside device? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys!
been looking for the perfect theft protecting app, and found one that claims to be hidden, and can also survive a factory reset.
so assuming that's true, lets imagine this
a guy steals my N4, and after 2 days i track him down using the app and come to his house, by that time he already formatted everything
and reinstalled stuff as if it was he's device.
is there any code/id/serial number inside the phone that you can dispute to google in order to prove to the police that its urs? for example u
check and the code is 123456, and u email google and they confirm that ur order was shipped with phone code 123456?
ty!

You mean like a serial number?

Which app is this?

idk, might be a dumb question but does google know the serial number of every phone they sell?
and also, do they disclose it when it comes to ownership disputes of this kind?

its Cerberus - but if im not mistaken its free for a month or so and than u pay once for 3 licenses - still worth it if it does everything they say.

look at your box, my N7 box has lots of numbers on it. See if one of them matches something in the settings menu.

The hardware radio adresses are (more-or-less) unchangeable.
The IMEI for example, but also the wifi MAC address, also the bluetooth MAC address. And the wifi address can easily be noticed from outside, without an app helping (though you must be in range to detect the device).

I gladly paid for mine.
Payment server
I was going to pay for it too. But I don't trust their payment server. I should be allowed to use Paypal and not need to enter my personal information again. So sorry Bud but I don't trust a method where I log into Paypal, and then get sent to a window where I need to enter my address, my phone number etc.. doesn't feel trustworthy. I have never had to enter my information after I used Paypal for something and I am not about to start.
I guess I'll go back to sensor lock and just have to fix the code to allow the phone to answer. I would have supported his effort but not if I need to re-enter my personal stuff that Paypal has confirmed. :
OH SNAP!! I just realized it removed my outlook email account on my device and keeps crashing SQB. I don't think anyone should install it. Seriously this program is malicious code somewhere

...definitely no malicious code in PocketShield. This is one of the best locking apps available. Customer support is second-to-none. Updates come thick and fast with new options and settings. Superb software - just buy it!
I second that pocketshield is an excellent app and have experienced no malware-like effects
has anyone come across an issue with it not locking when waking up?
Mine stopped working and now doesn't lock unless I run the Lock app.
Make sure you have latest v2.1.1
If power off with AeButton or other way not the standard power off, it might not lock.
regards
mine locks very well, but i suggest asking for help @ pocketshield.net there u can speak directly with the developer ..
Pocketshield ROCKS! and the developer has been super-responsive to enhancement/bug reports.

Uninstalling pocketshield
I installed Pocketshield on my phone, then uninstalled it because it was making my phone crash and ending up with a blank screen that was impossible to take out, and now, the phone skin is changed to the theme that comes with Pocketshield. I removed the program, but I can't go back to the original phone skin that comes with the HTC Diamond. How can I go back to original settings without doing a hard reset?

Tnx again
Have you gone through the settings?
I have an HD2 as well and no problems! and so my fellows who recommended it to me.
Pocket Shield
I have tried both Pocket Shield Protector and Pocket Shield Proximity used in conjunction with VolumeX.
I have tried nearly every possible combination of settings to achieve what I need and I always seem to hit one snag or another.
I originally purchased Pocket Shield Protector and VolumeX. When my blue tooth answer button stopped working I switched to Pocket Shield Proximity and Jim was nice enough to switch my registration from the more expensive Protector application to the less expensive Proximity application. I have since asked Jim to move my registration back to the Protector application but he hasn't as of yet.
In general this is a good application, however, it lacks polish on the basic functionality.

Protecting samsung galaxy s after being stolen

HI guys,
Something came to my mind and wanted to share it with you...
its how to protect my device after being stollen?
I know there are plenty of apps to find the device( through gps remote activation), to erase the contents and release alerts through different ways.
BUT WHAT IF
somebody had stolen your phone , pull out the battery, then boot it into download mode (3 buttons combination that every one knows), and finally flashed it with any rom by using ODIN ???????
the question here;
IS THERE ANY WAY TO PASSWORD PROTECT THE ACCESS TO BOTH RECOVERY &/OR DOWNLOAD MODES IN THE DEVICE, SO IT CAN BE USELESS FOR THE THEIF ???
i hope u understand my worry here
cheers
Just call your carrier and report it stolen so the IMEI gets blacklisted, a useless toy to most thieves (unless they are smart enough to change the IMEI but most aren't).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMEI
PS: Please, the is really no need for huge fonts and colors, most of us can see just fine.

The best way top protect your phone is to keep your eyes on the device.

Juest a question...
As said before already exist many apps useful for retrieve our device if stolen, but all these apps need the GPS turned on.
What if if it's tuned off? Does exist an app that can turn on GPS in a remote way? (by sms for instance)

yes, you can install an app, but not it will not activate without having it already configured
AntiDroidTheft is a very good one
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.android.antidroidtheft
and then you can find your phone online
http://www.antidroidtheft.com/
unfortunately for it and all other similar software to work, you will need to have had it pre-installed and configured
Anti DT requires the least config to work
if you have a smart Coder friend, maybe he can upload a new version of this App modified to install and start automatically with a predefined secret password
then you install it from the new Android Market
and it will install and activate itself on its own, and you might have a chance at finding your phone, and trace it to where the guy live
will tmobile be able to help at all if i call them because none of my frienda would be able to make that program. thanks though please any ideas

You can download this app: https://market.android.com/details?id=org.gtmedia.findMyPhone remotely to your phone.
Then send a SMS to your phone with the secret code and command. The default secret code is 1234.
List of commands:
1234 help
1234 locate
1234 alarm
1234 wipe (wipe sd card is not set by default)
1234 calls
Unless your gps is on, the location of your phone isn't going to be accurate. Just hope that if a person did steal the phone, they won't be removing the app. Since when the phone receives the message, it will play the ringtone and notifications will pop up.
hmm... interesting
trying that as we speak to see if it works

hmm... the app is no longer supported, they are forwarding people to a PAID app instead
whhat is the name of the new app?
Also how do i know what the code is if i dont have my phone?
I'm only asking because you didn't mention it specifically, but did you try the simplest method first of calling you're own number and seeing if someone answers? Also, send a text message to the phone saying please call me.
You said "seems like" someone took it. Maybe you dropped it or left it and an honest person has it and will gladly return it. Worth a shot if you haven't yet.

Did you actually try it yet? It works for me. I tested it.
Go to the market and have it remotely downloaded onto your phone. Then send the phone commands.
If you can't get the app (or any other app) downloaded onto your phone for whatever reason, then of course this won't work or any other method that I can think of.
I wouldn't be suggesting it if it didn't work. What's the point in doing that? I got nothing to gain from it.

I'll confirm this works. I just went to the link you provided earlier on my CR-48, then told the Market to install it to my phone which is across the room from me.
I waited a few minutes, then used my Google Voice web account to send the "1234 Locate" to my phone. A few seconds later I heard a text message arrive on the phone. A few seconds later I got a text message back from the phone that said my location would be determined in under 5 minutes, and then about a minute later I got another message from the phone that was the latitude and longitude of the phone, and then another link with a link that opened Google Maps on my laptop to right where my phone is.
AWESOME.
I've got WaveSucure & MobileDefense both on my phones, and this is simpler and easier than either of those. Good find.
The only negative here is that on my other two phones when I tried to install it on them, the Market told me that I hadn't logged into the Market on those phones in a while and that I would have to open the Market on those phones before I could remotely install. I'd have been screwed on those phones.

An app developer wants my phone's IMEI number...

An app developer wants my phone's IMEI number to comp me an app. Is providing this a big deal?
I searched and only found a reference to these folks using the # for the paid app (the same one they will comp me), and some guy getting chastised for posting his on one of the forums.
Did he say why he needs the IMEI? You could give him the number and change the last 4 digits, which will still indicate what make and model your phone is. We sometimes do this for warranty exchange problems.

"to comp me an app"..."using the # for the paid app (the same one they will comp me)".
I just don't know if it is a good idea, bad idea, or what. Maybe it is normal, I don't know.
I did some searching and some apps do use the IMEI number for the license key. That way their app isn't put on one phone and then shared to multiple others. Check their permissions in the Market and make sure that the permission was given for the IMEI and if it was then they already have it, which means sending them the number wouldn't hurt.

Mysterious text message

Today I sent a text message to an unknown number (unknowingly, when I was asleep) as follows.
APMN;BVD:4.0.8#ANDROID7.0#H2560W1
What is this supposed to be and how did this message send automatically?
What kind of implications can this have?
Also, I'd like to know what the other data is supposed to mean.

Is that an IMEI number? I recommend you hide that from your post... Check that your number is/ is not one of the ones on the text. No idea what it would be about, but I dont like it - it looks like your IMEI number plus a few other details just got sent to someone? I hope I'm wrong... Who did it send to? Be careful.

Its. All ure build info. Sir it sounds like you have a app on ure device with to many permissions. Are u stock unrooted rooted or custom rom? I would delete many apps. But first go into settings into permissions and see what apps have text permissions. And maby look if any can read info permissions. If its an app its aparantly setup to send at a specific time. But the infos already been sent so u may never see or hear of it again. But i would unistall anything untrusted.
And deny more permissions. Even stock apps can run correctly with some permissions shut down.
