Nexus sometimes freezes when connected to external HD and OTG cable - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says sometimes when I try and move files from the Nexus to my external HD using OTG cable and stickmount pro the Nexus will just freeze up and i have to disconnect the OTG cable and restart the Nexus, the files I'm trying to move are all less than 500MB so i cant understand why this is happening, anyone any assistance?

Are you using an external hd with its own power source? There may not be enough current to maintain the hd during large transfers.

Use an OTG cable with stickmount pro, all my files show up shortly after connecting and i have transfered music on the Nexus but probably one around 150MB max, the problem seems to be when I go and move files around 500MB it looks as if it is transferring but the screen goes dark and won't turn back on, and I have to take the OTG cable out and reboot the Nexus

I have come to the conclusion that I need a better OTG cable, maybe the one I have isn't powerful enough, I cannot think of anything else, unless anyone else has any tips?

Storage

With so many great games out that are very large, what is the best way to keep storage? I just cycle through them and uninstall them when done. Pretty much play one large game at a time. Is there a better way/way to increase storage?
Thanks

I've been curious about this also. But havent been able to completely figure it out by reading on the internet. Could you explain?
Does this mean that with USB OTG and NExus 7 Media importer, you could for example:
Plug and 16 GB USB Memory stick into your nexus, and your nexus would then have 16GB extra storage? Or does USB OTG only view whats already on the USB, so you'd put music/videos onto the USB stick, then it shows you that but doesnt read the storage?
I hope this makes sense
Thanks !
I'm rooted using the OTG-usb and stickmount. I have added music, videos, and pictures to a connected thumbdrive or sdcard and they show up and play just fine using the Nexus apps.
Root and Stickmount seems most popular method (many threads on XDA), or you could try this app if not rooted.
Nexus media importer is the way to go if ur not rooted. Works perfectly no problems whatsoever.

MyPassport 1 TB nexus 7

Hey is there no way I can use my WD My Passport 1TB via OTG on my nexus 7 ?

Use a USB OTG cable, make sure you're rooted, and you can use StickMount from Google Play to see the external storage.
There is also a system-level patch floating around that natively enables USB OTG, but I haven't tested that.
Cheers!
I already use that but both don't work for 1 tb' flash drives work fine

Aren't "My Passport" drives spinning disks?
I don't think you can use spinning disks with OTG on small devices... or if you can, not or very long. Your battery will get hosed.

[Q] Nexus 7 OTG Problem with External HDD

Hello guys
I have Nexus media importer (not rooted) and when i connect usb stick its working fine but when i connect my external hdd WD 320gb its not working. Anyone knows what could be the problem ? maybe lack of power ? waiting for answers :highfive:
You can connect only device with own power source...
It is possible to use a hub with otg, I have connected a kboard and mouse through a basic 4 port hub as a tester. You should be able to use a powered hub to drive your external HD

So which do you think is the problem?

Both the other posters indicated it is likely a power problem. But, not all external HD's will work, powered or not. My WD 750Gb My Passport HD won't mount even powered.
It is indeed a power problem. My usb 2.0 based wd1600 did the same. Since it does not have its own power source, i wired in 5 volts to its usb cable and that got me up and going. There are some usb 3.0 ext hdds that dont need external power to work though. Tassadar got one and said it runs fine with just the power provided by the n7. So you have 3 options. 1. Use an hdd with ext power. 2. Wire in 5 volts to the cable. 3. Purchase an hdd which the n7 can power.

How can I wire 5v power? You mean by hub with power input?

No. I actually spliced a 5 volt power adapter directly into the hdds usb cable (red and black wires). A little solder and a few heatshrinks are priceless.
I was going to upload a pic of the cord, but uploading anything with the xda app is beyond retarded anymore. Startimg to regret paying for the premium. For the greatest android site on the web, it is a shame that their app stinks and riddled with bugs. Kinda ironic.

I have the galaxy tab 4 10.1 installed in the dash of my truck. I need to be able to charge and use USB otg at the same time. Is there any way to do this? I was able to use a USB otg Y cable to do this with my old nexus 7 bit it doesn't work on this tablet. I've tried googling for answers bit have found anything.

Just thought I would share what I found. Not sure if I will get in trouble for this but if you go to bestbuy's website and paste this at the end
site/samsung-usb-connection-kit/2837365.p?id=1218363393359&skuId=2837365
It brings you to a link of a usb host piece that is compatible with all samsung devices. I am thinking of buying one to test it out and would be happy to report back if it does work.
I bought the that Meditato posted. I can confirm that it works. Only prob I ran into tho is when removing the power and plugging it back in, the keyboard connected/disconnected flashes back and fourth. The keyboard does work while its doing that...
