Storage - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

With so many great games out that are very large, what is the best way to keep storage? I just cycle through them and uninstall them when done. Pretty much play one large game at a time. Is there a better way/way to increase storage?
Thanks

I've been curious about this also. But havent been able to completely figure it out by reading on the internet. Could you explain?
Does this mean that with USB OTG and NExus 7 Media importer, you could for example:
Plug and 16 GB USB Memory stick into your nexus, and your nexus would then have 16GB extra storage? Or does USB OTG only view whats already on the USB, so you'd put music/videos onto the USB stick, then it shows you that but doesnt read the storage?
I hope this makes sense
Thanks !

I'm rooted using the OTG-usb and stickmount. I have added music, videos, and pictures to a connected thumbdrive or sdcard and they show up and play just fine using the Nexus apps.

Root and Stickmount seems most popular method (many threads on XDA), or you could try this app if not rooted.

Nexus media importer is the way to go if ur not rooted. Works perfectly no problems whatsoever.

OTG Cable??

Hi,
I have purchased an OTG cable for my Nexus 7 and when I plug it in it flashes for a second and then goes off. Do I need to do something to get this to work?
Thanks

You're connecting a USB flash drive?
the N7 doesnt support usb flash drives out of the box you will need to find an app to mount it, or if your rooted use the terminal to mount it
Most popular app used to mount USB storage is Stickmount. It's been updated to work with JB/Nexus 7, too.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount
I bought the right angle usb otg cable from New Egg for 3.99 US and it works great.
I also have a micro sdcard reader from Lexar that is designed to plug into the usb port so I'm staying pretty compact that way.
Install stick mount, I use that to use my 64GB USB for extra storage.

I had to trim the plastic around my otg adaptor before it would connect properly and let stickmount work. Now works perfectly with sandisc cruzers

I have downloaded stick mount however that requires root so its a no go, also I see that people are saying they bought the right otg cable and it worked, is that non-rooted? If so where can I buy the right cable from as I am in UK?
Thanks

If not rooted- the stickmount app does pop up, but can't mount the device and you have no access to attached device because you don't have superuser rights.
So- you need to be rooted- and use the stickmount app.... that's it.

Yes, it does, read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743052
So long as you have rooted your device and installed Stickmount.

OTG on Nexus 7

Sorry to ask this here, but i have had no luck finding the answer through the search function in the xda app. I am also fairly new to the nexus 7 forums and haven't had a ton of time yet to read through the threads..
Currently if i want to connect a USB mass storage device to my nexus with an OTG usb adapter, i have to use stickmount app to mount it. Are there kernels out there that support this so i don't need the app?
Thanks for any info

Search for 'Nexus Media Importer'.

I might be wrong, but I think the stock cm10 kernel supports USB otg mounting.
Nexus media importer sucks.. Not only does it cost money but it only mounts FAT and is READONLY. Thanks for the suggestion but our tablet should be capable of usb mass storage mounting right out of the box or atleast with root.
In the mean time, stickmount works ok or ntfs mounter. I guess.

[Q] Is a micro USB memory stick available/ possible

There are several same memory sticks of high capacity that would fit nicely jsut under the nexus and provide much needed extra memory. wonder if such a thing is available or indeed possible?
You can use an OTG USB Adapter, device must mehr rooted, and use the tool"stick mount:
If device is unrooted You can use the "nexus Media importer" from market.
Cheers

Yes thanks I understand that but a memory stick with an micro interface wouldn't need the cable. know they don't exist but wondered if any technical issue that would rule them out.
I think, there might be a problem to harm your connector port if the USB stick isn t quite small, a flexible cable is the better choice in my opinion...
But your idea is interresting..

I thought this was interesting too. Until I realised you'd need an adaptor to plug it into a computer. So no real benefit ...LOL

I bought a 64GB Kingston usb drive and use 'Nexus Media Importer", works great with HD films and music etc. It's a shame it can't be used as an SD card enabling installation of apps etc to it. Oh well, maybe in the future or I finally root my Nexus 7.

MyPassport 1 TB nexus 7

Hey is there no way I can use my WD My Passport 1TB via OTG on my nexus 7 ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Use a USB OTG cable, make sure you're rooted, and you can use StickMount from Google Play to see the external storage.
There is also a system-level patch floating around that natively enables USB OTG, but I haven't tested that.
Cheers!
I already use that but both don't work for 1 tb' flash drives work fine

Aren't "My Passport" drives spinning disks?
I don't think you can use spinning disks with OTG on small devices... or if you can, not or very long. Your battery will get hosed.

Extending storage

Hi,
What are the main options of extending N4 storage space? I can't use any internet so it has to be local.
I saw some wifi flash drives and there's the battery pack + usb stick (only way for portable usb otg?)
Are there other alternatives to this?
Thanks

Could always look into those wifi portable hard drives. They charge a premium over a regular external hard drive, but it appears to be an easy method to expand your storage.

OTG is not supported for the nexus 4 but there is a kernel that does allow it. Otherwise, it would have to be a WiFi hard drive

What about that thing, Nexus Media Importer? Does it not work with the Nexus 4?
BTW, regular file transfer, USB to your computer and copy from computer interface works, right?

Nexus media importer works by using an otg cable so no it won't work. Regular file transfer works just fine with a pc
Cheaper than a portable wifi drive, just use an old android phone with no sim and a massive micro sd card - use Fast File Transfer to exchange files this way and that. Bingo!

Or if all your media is music just get a cheap Creative MP3 player that accepts memory cards.
I bought a 16gb for my vibrant($40) so it has enough space for all my media needs.

You can use OTG with the N4,you just need a special OTG Y cable, a custom kernel, and an exterior power source. You can find the thread in the Original Development section
