[Q] Rearrange/Reassign Back/Home/Apps Virtual Keys - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm seeing that from Android phone to phone, each manufacturer tends to place the back key (whether usual hardware or Nexus Galaxy/4 software/virtual) in different locations. This tends to be annoying, especially if you have got used to placing your thumb in the "back" location.
I'm sure that on the Nexus 4, the software/virtual based BACK / HOME / APP buttons can be assigned. But can they be done without rooting and putting on a custom ROM? I'm not ready to go through rooting my new Nexus 4 (yet), and I'm hoping that Google put a little freedom into their 4.2.1 O/S.
Thank you.

Doubt Google would add that in. Have to flash a custom ROM.
Custom ROM is the only way. If you want we can guide you through the process of flashing one if you like to. Don't use a toolkit is the first step. Take the time and learn it as it takes < 30 minutes to learn and it will be a basic "get me out of this hole!" method when your phone is somehow ever in a non bootable state and you won't mistaken yourself for bricking your phone when its not
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1972508 is a good guide to get started on for unlocking your bootloader which is the first step.

Don't know why everyone is so against toolkits. I have used them on my galaxy nexus. Sgs3 and now my nexus4 numerous times and haven't had a single issue. Ever.
The toolkits runs the same commands that you would if you were to do it in fast boot and cmd.

I am personally against toolkits because people are using it without knowing what they're doing and not knowing how to do basic things such as fastboot and adb. Then they come to using recoveries not knowing what happened and end up messing their phones up.
Yes it runs the SAME commands, but you aren't doing it yourself.
It's like what I said in other threads,
Let's say you wanted to go from Home (point A) to school (point B). You can do it in two ways,
1) Do it manually and learn the steps on how to go from Point A to B.
2) Use a toolkit that will get you to Point A to B, not knowing HOW you got to Point B.
I'm not saying this to get people to become smart or learn some stupid commands that they will never use. Chances are, every user flashing things on XDA should know these basic commands (not even know because you can just look it up).
If you used Method 2, what happens if theres a road closure? What do you do there?! you used a toolkit, you are stuck and you resort to asking questions on how to get back to Point A to reroute yourself to Point B.
If you used Method 1, you are able to backtrack yourself to fix problems leading to a better community which will result in less questions on how to return back to stock for warranty purposes, RMA purposes, flashing something and their phone isn't booting up but THEY CAN boot into bootloader mode (if they used toolkit, they dont know how to flash back to stock or flash a new recovery). Things like that. After all, this is a DEVELOPER forum not a tech support forum, am I not right about this?
Both method 1 & 2 brings you to Point B. But method 1 is more important as eventually, people using toolkits will need to use fastboot and adb sometime. Maybe not today, but sometime in their lifetime they will have to use it and will have to learn. So why not spend the 15-20 minutes and learn it now? Not be spoon fed. I used the G1, I had to work my butt to obtain root via 30-35 minute of using ADB shell and terminal emulator.
Yes method 1 takes longer (not that much longer) but in the end it'll pay off and is worth spending that 15-20 minute reading it, it's a step-by-step process and doesn't take a rocket scientist to know how to do it. It looks difficult at the start (it really doesn't, just follow the steps in the guide as it goes) but after that it looks like a walk in a park and is just as easy as using a toolkit.

[Q] Just got my MT4G... very neat, but questions...

So first off, I'm new to Android, the MT4G is the first I will Android phone I will have have ever owned. I have been on Unlocked/Jailbroken iPhones for 2 years and I did the unlocks/jailbreaks myself. Now I'm sick of slow incompatible bands, anyways, I just got my MT4G, I have lots of questions.
Lots of questions, some easy, some... not so easy?
1. What's the main difference between perm root vs visionary? It seems like perm root is relatively difficult still and I don't want to risk bricking my phone...
2. What rom/kernel/firmware should I use? I've never dealt with so many variables when I was on the iPhone.
3. So I got "panel = 1", looks like I will try to get it replaced... Can I still play with my phone for the next few days, then get it backed up and when the "good" phone comes in, I can restore that backup? Therefore allowing me to keep all the stuff I did in the downtime of the new phone coming in.
Thank you in advanced!

Visionary is only the first step to permroot, bit it's not difficult and you won't brick if you read all directions and follow them all to the letter. I personally recommend grankins guide, not the ultimate one, as it was the easiest for me to do.
2. What rom/kernel/firmware should I use? I've never dealt with so many variables when I was on the iPhone.
That's the great thing about android: you get to pick all these roms are amazing, it just depends on what features you're looking for.

Theoretically, yes. Just nandroid backup once rooted and clockwork recovery is installed, and you should be able to resoree from that on your new phone once you root it.

Yeah, the resource Bible posted by tiger013 under the development section it should be up to date on all the latest roms , kernels and themes. It also contains the rooting guide I told you about, along with several others.

Just do a little research and learn what things are. (IE: What a kernel is vs a ROM)
Then it gets a little easier when you learn the android terminology. Learn the basics, and you should be fine as well. Like getting ADB to recognize your phone.

Are these things really that easy to brick?

I know im rehashing allot of stuff already said and I apologize for that. But dev information can be overwhelming when you come late to the game like im doing now, just trying to sort this out in my head before my Fire arrives tomorrow. Not new to android, rooted and romed plenty of Android phones including a G2 so I know my way around the basics like adb and the like. I've just never seen so much talk about bricking as im seeing around these fire forums.
From everything im reading it seems pretty straight forward, you use KFU to root (should you perm root or temp at this point or does it matter?), flash FFF, then flash TWRP, and then just flash whatever rom you want, right? Is there something im missing, do kindles just randomly brick while doing this or do you have to do something wrong? Also, it sounds like the way FFF works as long as you have that flashed and you don't dink around with bootloader it should be impossible to brick no? And assuming this is true why doesn't everyone just flash FFF and be done with it, are there any drawbacks to running it?
Guess im just trying to figure out if these things are brick machines or are there just allot of new android folks around this device that aren't following the steps properly? I suppose I better make a factory cable just in case lol
Thanks for reading, any help you can give a Fire newb would be appreciated!

No, they are actually pretty difficult to brick. A lot of the "brick" threads here are usually one of two things.
1) Users who can't get their devices to boot normally because they don't know how to change the bootmode.
2) KFU stops mid-way through some process and they are not familiar with the tools to reverse or finish the process.
By the sound of your post, you are ahead of the game and KFU will probably get in the way of where you want to go. You don't even have to root the KF if you are just going to flash a ROM. I suggest you skim this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547
Post #2 will get your drivers installed and the bottom of post #3 has step-by-step directions on how to get your device ready to flash a ROM. I think that's all you're going to need.
EDIT: I forgot to answer your FFF question. Yes, if you have an intact FFF bootloader, you should always have a solid base from which to rebuild your system. You could basically wipe everything else out... as long as you have FFF, you can recover without having to do anything drastic. The only drawback I can think of is that it takes a little while longer to boot because it pauses for about 4 seconds while it temporarily gives you access to fastboot mode. IMHO, this is actually a huge plus because it means you can always get access to fastboot mode without a factory cable, so it's definitely worth the tradeoff.
Like said already, they aren't easy to brick.
What is a pain in the ass is getting the computer to recognize it correctly sometimes.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk 2
No, they are not very easy to brick. Most of the "bricks" are not permanent and quite easy to fix if you have some ideas of what is wrong and the methods of fixing it.
To actually brick it permanently so that there is no way to fix it without proper hardware tools is very hard and I believe that is very uncommon if you follow instructions and do everything with care.
Here's my very own anecdote of a false-brick panick:
It was my first day with a shining brand new kindle. I read on xda that KFU was the easiest way to get into the world of custom roms. So I downloaded it, followed the steps exactly and ended up with a kindle which won't boot. I was lost. I didn't know what went wrong, as is usually the case with such scenarios.
After a few hours of head-screatching and crash-coursing through these threads, I finally figured out the problem. KFU attempted to flash TWRP which was not properly downloaded. I think my internet connection must have dopped. But KFU thought the download was done and proceeded to flash anyway and long story short, I lost a precious few hours of my life but did gain heaps of experience in the process.
Lucky for me, FFF had been flashed earlier and I was able to recover my lovely kindle.
Moral: xda rocks! (may not be obvious from the story, but it's true)
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using XDA
I've managed to permanently brick my device once but that was out of sheer stupidity and messing with partitions I didn't have any business messing with.
I'm not sure if it's failure to pay attention or some people don't want to take the time to learn what they are doing before doing it, but it simply amazes me how many people can't grasp the basics of how the Kindle Fire/Android works, even with one of the most comprehensive and easy to understand beginners guide I've seen.
As long as you understand that when adb/fastboot doesn't connect it's a driver issue, and you have a good understanding of the different bootmodes, with a little research you can fix 99.99999999% of the problems you'll encounter on the Kindle Fire.
Most of the problems you'll see are from Windows users (imagine that) because of Windows' lack of a good system for dealing with device drivers. And most of the rest are from just plain ignorance, refusal to learn, and trying to take the easy way out.
If you have problem, chances are 250 other people have had the same problem and a simple search will usually get you the answer you need. And while XDA's search function has a lot to be desired, Google's search function works quite well and should definitely be put to use. You'll be amazed by what you'll find just by putting "site:forum.xda-developers.com kindle fire" in front of your search criteria.
Thanks guys, you pretty much confirmed what I was thinking.
And thanks kinfauns, I did read your guide but totally missed post 3, that's pretty much all the info I need. I would much rather use ADB when the steps are that easy. I remember when the devs first got s-off on the G2 and the ADB/Terminal emulator steps and this looks allot more straightforward lol.
Just wanted to update to say that I got my Fire and got it rom'd. Nothing to it, kinfauns guide made it incredibly easy. If you can read you can root a Fire
Thanks again kinfauns!

Such a simple concept, yet it alludes so many.
ha
Not gonna lie, it is kinda funny to watch so many people freak out...but I guess I was there once too.
ive rooted 5 kindles now.
3 of my own, as i had to return 2 because of a ghosting issues apparently from a bad batch that got out. Note to self (and by proxy, others), buy your kindle from Amazon instead of a 3rd party store. At least Amazon has great customer server.
was very easy, never had a single issue. Even returning them back to stock.

[Q] Will pay today

Hi, i have an atrix, once upon a time i let it fly off my motorcycle while using gps. 12 cars and a full schoolbus later i needed another phone. I got another atrix 2 months ago off ebay for a fair price. I really like the phone, but i was running kennethpenns alien ROM. I tried to put another rom on, but i had to unlock it first, well i have failed miserably. I dont think i am bricked, but it said "Failed to boot 0x1000" to i scrolled down to android recovery and selected that thinking i will start over. Now it says "reading ODM fus:1" and its stuck doing that.
Look here is the short facts. Im not a developer, but i LOVE messing around with my atrix. I have a lapdock that i like to occasionally use, I use it in my car all the time in the dock and i have an 11 week old daughter (my first child) that i am fond of taking video and pictures with and sharing with my family. I sometimes web surf from my HD dock and use it for music.
I am 42yrs old, and i try to keep up, but obviously i messed up.
Here is what i am looking for, Someone who, for $30 will speaker phone, Go To Meeting with me (i can set it up) and spend no more than 45min with me to get this unlocked and a ROM on it. The question is the ROM. I need all these functions that i mentioned above, i dont care if the fingerprint reader works or not, it would be nice but it doesnt have to.
Is there anyone out there that can help, or would like to? I will paypal Today, as soon as you contact me. I will check messages, but if you want to go ahead and call my office phone #, here it is.xxx-xxx-xxxx, it calls a Dallas number, but i am a remote worker on the east coast in Atlanta.
I will reply to this post, once someone has contacted me to help, thus no need for multiple call.
Thank you so much for anyone up to the challenge. Max
EDIT I should add, that whomever helps, i dont care if your 6 years old, have a little patience with me. I rarely use Command Prompt in my day to day living, although i took a C+ class 10 years ago and got a C-....seriously embarresed. I also have RSDlite installed and all the drivers, unzipped in a file on my desktop as instructed from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423

No need to pay for something that you can easily do yourself.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600 This link should have all the relevant information you need.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 This should solve your softbrick problems. You are going to need to install Official Motorola Drivers found here: http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-E...arging-Drivers and a USB to micro USB cable.
As for Roms, I do not use Webtop myself, but there are many threads in the development section that can operate under the conditions you require. It just requires a little bit of reading, if you have taken C++ before, this should be fairly simple. After unbricking your phone and installing recovery, all you have to do is flash the zip from within the recovery, quite harmless compared to RSD.
It's very simple, i had this issue too and this tip below worked with me, hope it helps you
I: Unlock BootLoader
Step 1:
- Download file Atrix.zip, then extract to C, now you have folder C:\Atrix
- Install Handset USB driver & RSD lite
Step 2.
- On Atrix, go to RSD protocol mode
Step 3.
- Flash intl-fix-try1.sbf in Atrix folder via RSD lite
Step 4.
- On Atrix go to Fastboot mode
- On your PC, open CMD and type
c: cd \Atrix
fastboot oem unlock [ Remember your device ID (16 letters and numbers)]
fastboot oem unlock #### ( #### is your device ID above)
fastboot reboot
Done
In the first reboot, you'll see the text Unlocked on your screen.
II: Install CWM
1.go to fastboot mode
2. on PC, type in cmd
c: cd \Atrix
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot

No JOKE! Wow this is unbelievable, except the very believable part where i unlocked it, (unbricked it) and then went back into main and it said, battery too low to flash! Bahaha, im charging it now. So curious to see what the Nottach ROM is like. Really wish there was a "Best" Rom for my listed applications.
On another note, this will hold me over until december when i see all the Head to Head reviews of the 920 lumina (since my work is based in Windows Outlook and Salesforce.com software) the Optimus G, or the Nexus version of said phone. Not sure there are any other power house phones out there being released besides the One V+ which doesnt really strike me. You know what does though, thats a little oddball but cool? That Padfone 2 coming out. If that has LTE, i really might consider that as a serious contender to replace my awesome Atrix 4g.
If you don't really need the webtop, I would suggest epinter's cm10. Hardware Acceleration does not work right now, but all normal day to day process works very well. Hopefully, with so many people working on the leaked rom, it will come to fruition very soon and we'll have a fully functional jelly bean on our hands. I read somewhere that they are working on an improved version of webtop, but since I don't use it, I didn't really pay attention to that development. Hopefully that did not take up too much of your time and enjoy your newly unlocked phone!

[Q] Non Starter.

I have had my Nexus 7 for some time now and it has always worked flawlessly, until today that is. I last used it on Wednesday and it was OK. I didn't use it at all yesterday but when I tried to use it today .......no go. I keep it in one of those cases with the magnetic closure when I opened it the pad was off. I turned it on and after a longer time than usual I got the Google sign and after a very short time the Nexus logo, the multicoloured X and the light were going round it as usual. That is as for as it went, I thought maybe the battery was low so I conected the charger but there were no changes. I tried to turn the pad of to know avail. After some time I managed to turn it off but it restarted itself straight away.Eventualy I managed to turn it off and stay off by pressing and holding the power and volume up buttons. I left it like that for some time and then turned it on again with the same result as earlier.
Sorry if this has been a bit long winded but I thought it best to give all the facts I could to stop anyone good enough to help from having to ask questions and the wait for a reply.
Any help anyone can give will be much appreciated, oh I do miss my little 7.
Is it stock? Try holding the power button for about 30 seconds that is a hard reset.

Is it stock? Try holding the power button for about 30 seconds that is a hard reset.

Ouch.
Everyone hates bricks, semi or full.
I suppose now would be a good opportunity to root it and install a recovery (I recommend TWRP) ? This would completely unbrick your device. The downside is that you will lose ALL data.
I can't think of any way to help that isn't all ready on this thread, that doesn't involve data loss. Sorry :S
If you don't want root, but don't mind data loss, you could try restoring factory image (though it is as easy to root, and I would recommend doing so)
Good luck
Many thanks for that Fallon9111 It looks to me as if root is going to be the way for me to go.
I have had PC,s Smartpgones and two or three tablets and have never rooted any of them.exept one and that one was made possible for me to do as I was given complete foolproof, one sylable instructions. I bet you can guess you and anyone else who reads this what's coming next, can you or somebody please give me idiot proof instuctions to root my 7.Please..

Did you manage to root yet?
If you are still stuck on rooting, there are many good tuts on xda, and rooting nexus's is the easiest
Windows method I recommend: WUGS
Other: android sdk (command line)
To be honest, I found the command line method on linux the easiest

Some questions about nexus 4/rooting/warranty etc.

Hi Guys,
I am considering buying the Google Nexus 4, for the price it seems like the best bang for the buck phone and I cant seem to find anything better in its price range.
My biggest issue with it is the darn on screen buttons that waste screen space, I really wish they had move these to hardware but for some baffling reason they left them on screen.
For this reason I will need to root the dvice as those on screen buttons will annoy me to no end. However, it seems rooting the new android is a lot more complicated then it was before, this brings me to my first 2 questions
- Do you have to unlock to root? Is there no method to root without unlocking (I just dont want to void the warranty).
- What is the best method for unlocking? I've seen a few guides kicking around, some using ADB Fastboot/something else and another using the Nexust Root Toolkit. Though I havent been fully satisified with any of these guides, could you point me to the best and safest method for rooting?
With regards to unlocking and the warranty, I've read that people say the warranty states unlokcing "may" void your warranty. Doe anyone know if it really does? Any experienced sending an unlocked phone for warranty service?
My last question is regarding the GPS, we want to be able to use the phone for Geocaching but have no interest in a data plan, the specs of the phone say that it has GPS but does this mean it actually has a GPS receiver that does not rely on a data plan?
Thanks for all your help guys!
anyone of the pinned threads for rooting will work just fine. Also the toolkits are simple to use. Its unlock bootloader which is a simple command and fastboot your recovery which again is simple and then you are on your way. Of course any changes to your phone will void warranty but its not like you cant set it back to stock. GPS works with data but the wifi geolocation I believe does not need data.
All in all its a simple phone to root and best bang for your buck no need to worry bout rooting and flashing roms since yes they are both simple and new 4.3 method is no different than any other as long as you flash SuperSu.
You also have a few roms that let you adjust the navigation keys at the bottom for more real estate on the phone screen
Dont over think everything and just sit back and enjoy :good:
Thanks for the info Playa, I appreciate it.
So the GPS works without data though righ? We have no plans to get data any time in the forseeable future, we've been using our Asus Infinity but its just so big that it's a pain to carry around with you when your hiking. If I load up some offline maps and the geo caching app then the gps will work offline just like on our Infinity? (hopefully a bit better actually as the gps on the infinity is a bit wonky).
The only other device I've rooted was the Infinity which was running ICS at the time, it was much more simple, just ran a program, hit yes a couple times and it was done. Wonder why no one has made a method for rooting without the need to unlock.

Rooting nexus devices really hasn't changed much over the years. It's actually super easy. There are/have been exploits for rooting without unlocking, but I don't know if they still work.
GPS works fine without a data connection as long as you have the map data saved offline.

Great, thanks! I'll likely order one in the morning, unless anyone can suggest a better phone for the price but if there is one then I can't find it.
About roms and stuff, I've never installed custom roms or anything, I only rooted my Asus Infinity to get rid of the nav bar on the bottom really. But They do intrigue me a bit, is installing custom roms a safe process? Also, could you suggest some good solid roms for the nexus 4? Preferably something that does not use fixed on screen buttons or has the capability to auto hide them,.

Stock 4.3 rom is good for me combined with a custom kernel like Franco kernel. for hiding the on screen buttons just add `qemu.hw.mainkeys=1` to the buildprop and reboot and use LMT launcher for Pie Control. Rooting 4.3 isn`t any less easier than it was btw, just flash an custom recovery and flash this zip http://download.chainfire.eu/346/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.55.zip and you`re rooted. Install superSU app from Play also if needed off course.
Great, I'll have to check that out.
But I gotta beg to differ a little bit with the ease of rooting, I'm sure to you guys that have been doing this all the time you could do it in your sleep but with my Asus Infinity all I literally had to do was plug it into the PC, run the rooting tool and hit yes like twice and it was done, no unlocking, no installing custom recoveries, no flashing anything or any of that.
Just wanted to add something, if you are still worried about the GPS.
I am abroad at the moment, so no data. Loaded up maps while on WiFi at a friends house, then let it guide me through Madrid center.
Worked like a charm.

Here is a one click tool http://download.chainfire.eu/297/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-mako-occam-nexus4.zip. Extract it and boot your phone in bootloader mode and click root-windows (if you run windows off course).

simply read the instructions over and over and over again. also the toolkits is easy enough because you only have to press a few buttons. I know we say its easy but its like anything else you just have to read slow follow directions or check out videos on youtube for it...
Thanks for the link gee2012, I'll have to give that one a go.
So what do you guys think is the best kernel? Been watching some reviews, seems the Franco kernel is very good for battery life, but th Matr1x kernel seems to also be good at battery life while providing a fair bit more performance then stock. Any thoughts? Do they all provide the ability to hide the navigation buttons or do I still have to get another app to do that?
