Hey all,
I just received my Nexus 7. I'm having trouble with getting connected. I can connect to the router fine, and the WiFi indicator turns blue, but I can't access the internet or occasionally will be able to load a tiny bit of data and then it stops.
I've been able to get a little better access by choosing a static IP instead of DHCP, but it's still "choppy." For instance using the Speedtest.net app I'll get a burst of data, then it flat lines. Burst, nothing, burst, nothing, etc. Chrome will sometimes load a page and sometimes it will time out. GMail has been syncing very slowly, every once in a while populating some more conversations.
I've tried my GNex at the same time and have no issues, as well as on my PC, so it's not an issue with my ISP.
Any ideas what I can check? I hope I didn't get a defective unit. I ordered from newegg and I don't know how they work with returns and exchanges.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
How close to the router is your nexus?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Fairly close. I show 2 "bars" of connection and in the WiFi panel in the settings it says the connection strength is "good."
Try moving right next to the router and let us know if the problem persists.

Issue persisted even when a few feet away from the router. However, performing a factory reset on the Nexus and power cycling the router seems to have remedied all the issues. I can connect via DHCP, browse the web just fine, and am able to get consistent data on speedtest.net at 20+Mbps.
Everything is working great now, this thing is awesome!
Glad to hear it!

My wi-fi keeps stoping but still says connected. I have to turn off the wi-fi and turn it back on to get it going again. The phone is the only device on my network that is doing this.
I have tried setting a static IP but it didn't work.
If so have you found a fix?
My wifi is not set to sleep.
Has anyone had this problem?
Thanks

Not with my phone but my Samsung had this problem before.
What router are you using? If you don't mind me asking and do you know what bands/fequences its on?
Same here. Keeps dropping signal, yet I'm still connected to it and am right beside it, also other devices keep working, I dunno why, also happens on 3g!

My router is from my ISP. It has all the bands including N. I'll look when I get home.
My other devises such as iphone, Ipad 2 and ipod touch does not do this.
I have tried setting a static IP. Maybe I have to set static IPs on everything in my house?
I have a ton of devices such as 3 PS3s, 2 ipod touches, 2 iphones, an Ipad 2, 3 DSi’s and a few laptops. I’ll go through and give everything static IPs tonight.
Thanks
Router make will help, sorry just as it was the software on the router that maybe the issue. Belkin and tompson are the worst, but can be potentially fixed.

Ok, I will check when I get home.
ive had this same issue on two routers and two xperia plays. now i just use conectify to create a hotspot with my laptop, works ALOT better. strangely enough it connects to my school network without ANY problems, but in my house its baaad.
Hi everyone, my dad has a Xoom on ics (official) 4.0.3 and it keeps dropping wifi connection. I tried static IP, dmz, and no difference. Wifi is working fine on my laptop, Motorola defy, HTC espresso, BB bold, etc. Any ideas? Router is a netgeat n600 wndr3700. Thanks!

I'm having a similar issue. I was using Skype for a video call and my wifi would drop every 15 minutes (or so). My phone would still be connected as well as my laptop. I noticed on my Xoom the wifi would completely drop a connection and then reconnect within 60 seconds. I've noticed at other times it seems to happen around once a day. I'm using a Linksys 600N dual band router but my Xoom is connected to the G band and not the N band. Hope we can find something that might fix this.

yeah i have the same issue when trying to stream anything from bbc iplayer. and im sure it isnt my isp because i am on a 50mb package.
I noticed this issue once my second xoom that arrived today registered to my network. I thought there was a conflict of some sort, so i just assigned each xoom their own individual IP via my routers Address Reservation feature. The problem is still there, but less often. Went from losing connection every few minutes, to every few hours or so.
Alright I'll try that

This is strange. Last night I went over to a friend's house and brought my Xoom along. While there I tried to go online with no success, although the lap top and my phone picked up the router signal. On the other hand my Xoom showed no wifi signal and wouldn't even scan for one. Came home the next morning and all is good with the Xoom's wifi scan and connections. There are times when my Xoom will not find a wifi signal right away but will find one later. I'm on nightly #81.
This is what I did to fix this, yrmv:
On my router I changed it from "mixed a/b/g/n" to "n only" and I have had a steady connection on both xooms for the past two days.

Well i have some devices on the network that don't support N. This sucks.......

The WNDR3700 is a piece of crap. I had the exact same router and it caused me all kind of trouble.
I solved my problems by installing openwrt on it. Every device on my home worked perfectly instantly.
hi folks,
this happens both my nexus 7 and galaxy nexus from time to time. While connected to my home wifi they will loose internet connection. They are still connected to my router as i can ping devices on the network. I have to disconnect and reconnect to get net access back again. Im using WPA2 Personal encryption on the routher with tkip/aes
Anyone else experience anything simillar? I have no issues on my work wifi.. it stays connected all the time
Cheers,
Mick
I'm curious about this too. Been having the same problem. I've tried two different routers even went back to stock. I use shout cast on winamp when I sleep. Wakes me up when the music stops.

seems like there are plenty of users experiencing the same issue

Its frustrating as my 7 and Galaxy Nexus are solid as a rock on wifi at work.. both experience the issues at home. I'll try boosting the power output as suggested here tonight and see how it goes
Comment 31 by lamyjeanfrancois, Aug 16, 2012
Changing home router to a wrt-based asus rt-n66u and boosting the output power to the maximum US allowed value of 100mW fixed it for me. Other devices were working fine, even lowly archos 28 mini tablets. It seems that jb is misinterpreting signal strength.
I dont want to run a static IP.

Some testing last night, i upped the output power on my ddwrt router - that didnt stop the issue from happening. Then i went with a static IP. This seemed more stable but i still lost connectivety at one point, only for it to return on its own - before i would have had to connect/disconnect from the access point to restore internet. More testing tonight.. its very frustrating! I dont think its a hardware issue as its happening with both the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. Anyone else having simillar issues?
Same here
I Experience the same, happens almost every hour or so.
All my other wi fi devices have no problems, just nexus 7
Hehehe it seems many of us having wifi range issue. I checked my wifi signal strength thru wifi analyzer app and it seems wifi is solid if only I always have more than -40dBm strength. Which means I needed to be always closer to the router, can't make it when I'm already at my room. Quite annoying but I guess I had to send it to service center.
Tapatalked from my Ace 2
Same problem here....
Weird thing is I have 2 routers connected to each other (dhcp off on second one), having same problem on both routers. I thought it was the internet connection as my HTC Desire does the same thing.
I also tested the nexus 7 wifi with my 3g Desire via hotspot.... and no issues at all for 3 hours+.
So i'm pretty sure its not a nexus issue, unless there are some compatability issues from my nexus to the router.
Ideas anyone?
using static IP at home seems to be stable.. cant understand what different though between work and home that it works fine in the office.. must be a config parameter on my access point at home

On my Nexus 10, about 2 weeks old, and running most current version of Android, non-rooted, I can connect to wifi networks, but I do not have access to the internet. It just started today after having no issues whatsoever since I purchased it. It also just happened randomly today out of the blue. For further information, in the top right corner where the wifi "baseball diamond" is, the bars are that grey/white instead of the typical blue. Which I know means that I am connected to the network but without internet access. I have tried restarting my device both powering it off and on, and simply restarting it by holding down the power button. I have tried turning wifi off and on. I have tried the same with airplane mode as well. None of it has worked. I was wondering if anyone knew of any fixes for this issue? Thanks and any help is appreciated.
First I would get the IP of the nexus by long pressing the Wi-Fi network.
Then go on your pc connected to the same router and ping the ip.
For Windows, press Windows, type cmd.exe, enter, then
ping 192.168.1.x
But put in the real address instead.
If you get a reply with a ms value, your tablet is really connected.
If it times out or you get 100% packet loss, then it really isn't connected, or is unresponsive on the network.

When the bars are grey it doesn't necessarily mean that you don't have internet. The bars only turn blue when you are connected to the Google Talk servers. They are blocked at my work but I still have internet access with grey bars.

It just started though and I didn't have problems before. And I am connected to the Google servers on my galaxy s3 just fine on the same wife network. And as for the other poster, how do I ping it on a mac?

So everything worked fine yesterday after doing this. But today it reverted back to what it was doing. Tried pinging the ip again but it didn't work and it gave me 100% packet error or whatever
The ping had nothing to do with it working again, it was just a coincidence. You're having the same wifi problem a lot of us are suffering.
it has to do with the dns settings of the network I am using. And it just seems to come and go in terms of working. Hopefully it is fixable problem within the software
I am having a similar problem, but it happens sporadically and oftentimes fixes itself after about 30 seconds. Is this a known problem and is it hardware? Also, sometimes when I go to open the play store I will get a "No connection" message with the option to retry even when I am fully connected (blue bars and everything). The retry almost always works too. I am curious why this happens and if the two issues are related. Thanks for the forum, folks.

Yes, this is a known problem many are experiencing and is most probably software, unfortunately google seems to have a hard time getting their fat fingers off their arse.
Same issue has been driving me crazy. I have to turn Wifi off and on again.
The other, really annoying issue is that when I turn Wifi on in my bedroom, it still connects to the living room router with terrible wifi reception, instead of the nice strong signal from the office router just next door, I have to tell it explicitly connect to the office one.
Alias_neo. Why don't you just rename the network in your room to a different name so the tablet can distinguish between the two

They ARE different names, that's what's bugging me. My SGS3 had no issue, but for some reason the N10 just prefers one once it's set.

This is my second note 3 and it happen with both. Whenever I connect to a wifi I get a notice popping up that my Internet connection is unstable.
Of course when this happens no data transfer happens.
Any thoughts??

I noticed that the unstable connection was an issue when I installed adblock plus. After I uninstalled it the problem went away. So far that's the only resolution I've found.

I've been having the same issue, even from my bed which is about 10 feet from the router. I'm starting to really kick myself for letting myself fall outside of the 14 day return period...
Seems like a bug, I see it occasionally but I never drop any packets or see any latency.. shrugs..
I've been able to fix this issue by booting into stock recovery and wiping cache.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 3.
I've noticed it too with Adblock Plus installed. I think, it would constantly tell me that the connection was disabled due to slow network or something along those lines, on multiple different networks, all within 10 feet of the router. I wasn't able to use any apps that use internet other than Chrome today. I uninstalled Adblock Plus and it seems to be fine so far.
