[Q] Can't Create Local Contacts - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an address book and calendar in Outlook 2007 on my PC and synchronize these with my HTC Sensation using MyPhoneExplorer.
I have just started to configure my new Nexus 10 and whilst I have managed to create a local calendar, I can't find any way to create a local contacts account - it only offer a Google Gmail account or a "Corporate" account.
I don't want to move my contacts and calendar to Google, especially as Google has announced it is withdrawing support for syncing to Outlook.
Am I missing something, or is there a way of having "local" contacts on my Nexus just as I have on my phone. If not, does anyone have any suggestions for a way of keeping my phone, tablet and PC synced as an ongoing solution?
Thanks.

I bought this last year after I bought myself the Galaxy Nexus.
http://www.fieldstonsoftware.com/software/gsyncit3/index.shtml
Local contacts are not supported on Nexus handsets, it's a Google phone.

Thanks for the info! The key fact is your last comment. I spent some time yesterday searching for further info but I didn't find that. Can you tell me where this came from?
My problemn now is how to sync with my PC. The gsyncit program sounds good but if you believe the Google news release, it will also be affected by the withdrawal of syncing from Jan31, 2013 for new accounts. Granted, if I set it up now it should be OK but there's no guarantee for how long.
If I do solve the PC issue and move contacts to Google, it makes sense to also move my calendar. I have entries going back to 2005 that I'd like to keep. The last time I tried to create a Google calendar by syncing from Outlook, it would only sync around 30 days into the past. Is there any way to get the whole thing into Google?

Export/Import/Issues Contacts or Calendar

When the new version of Gmail came out, users started having issues importing contact files that were exported from MS Outlook. The biggest issue, and one I just ran into, was that street addresses weren't coming in. Everything else was, but not physical address info.
I researched it in GoogleGroups and found the solution. At the top right of the Gmail inbox page is the option 'Older Version', click it and do the import of your contact CSV file, everything comes over as it should. Afterwards, click the same link (now labeled 'Newer Version').
If you've used the Anniversary or Birthday date fields in your contact records, there is no equivalent in Google Contacts -- but the dates do come over in the Contact Comments, and are labeled. Google Contacts doesn't have 'categories' (they have 'groups'), so any you've assigned in Outlook come over into the Contact Comments as well; would be better if catergories came across as groups -- but -- oh well
Sync MS Outlook Calendar to Google Calendar App
There is a program that lets you sync your calendar over from Outlook to Google: http://www.google.com/support/calendar/ ... swer=98563
I've just used it, and it works well. One thing I found though is that if you have used the Anniversary and/or Birthday fields in your Contact records in Outlook, even though these dates appear in your Outlook Calendar, they don't sync over to Google with the calendar sync program. Google Contacts don't have birthday or anniversary date fields, so it must be related to that. Everything else comes over though, repeating, multi-days, and everything else came over just as they were created in Outlook.
Contacts?
I was wondering if there was another way to get your contacts off of your current phone to the G1, besides syncing your outlook contacts to gmail and having all of the on your sim. The reason I ask is because I have about 400 contacts and I would like to still have them all. Also would ppc backup work for the G1? Since there is no actual talk about it what is your thoughts?
I think its to early to be asking this question, unless someone here has a G1 already, which i don't think is the case.
As for the PPC Backup I highly doubt it will work...but i can tell you someone will make a program that does the same thing as PPC Backup.
outlook, sync and google calandar
I use my dash with outlook. I also sync my outlook calendar with my google calendar. Here's my question. I know you can't currently sync the g1 with outlook, but i can access my google calendar. I'm in Salt Lake City Utah and we aren't even scheduled for 3G yet. Do the events download to the phone or is it just through the browser? I live in a mountainous area and sometimes i don't have phone signal. When this happens, do I have no calendar? Same with my contacts and phone numbers. Have you had a chance to use the calendar? Thanks!
You might want to check out the user guide, it's in PDF format. You can use the forum search feature to find links to it, or, go to the T-Mobile site, they have it there as well.

outlook, google calandar and multi tasking...
my question about outlook isn't in the instruction manual that i could find. I'm curious if my google calendar data is available on the phone if im out out cell range and can't go on line. Here's another question. On my dash, if i go to anther program, my explorer shuts down and if i go back to it to go on line, i have to look up whatever web page i was looking at all over again. Does the G1 keep you on line even though your off doing something else? How have you found it does at multi-tasking. Any slow down? I'm always having to reboot my dash... Thanks, Scott

I wish I could answer this but I dont understand what exactly you are asking.
Applications do not seem to close they stay open. So if you open ebay.com and go back to it at the end of the day it will still be open....
Does that answer your question?
Calender Export from outlook to Gmail?
How do I go about doing this?

Google Calendar Sync
Download google calendar sync. it is easy, you can set it up to sync on your computer. I have it to sync every 30 minutes.
Here is the Link
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?hl=en-ie&answer=89955
If you have a lot of Outlook categories and want the same on google calendars, i do the following.
I have 1 outlook calendar with about 8 colored categories.
I made 8 google calendars, named the same as the 8 categories.
Downloaded/purchased an app called gsyncit, which syncs all items to the corresponding google calendars. Works pretty well.
I use google calendars for mobile device since it's easier to read then mobile outlook, but at home/work, Outlook still rules as the organizer. Goolgle services are awesome for backing stuff up. I am notorious for blowing away my outlook personal folders when I am trying things out..
I am curious to see what the calendar app is like for dream, need to find some screenshots or something.
edit: i use to use the google calendar sync, but I could only sync 1 calendar from google calendar so that didn't work out to well for my categories. Hopefully they will beef up Google Calendar Sync.
Thanks guys I will try this!

I don't have a Dream, but I know that google has something called "Google Gears". Google Gears is suppose to let you view online data, offline. AFAIK the only google app for mobile that does that right now is Picasa. There are some desktop version sites that do it also.
I don't know if you are looking at your calendar data via the web, or through the calendar app in android. But obviously, if you are using the browser, and you are out of range, you won't be able to view your calendar stuff, unless they have made google gears work with their web browser and calendar.
As for the calendar app, I assume it works like outlook, so once your events/appointments are on your phone in the app,t hey are there for good, whether or not you are in cell range.
As for your explorer question, I can't help with the android part of that, but I have a blackjack II on 6.1, and if i am on a webpage then decide i want to open an app, do whatever then go back to the page, i just press the back button and it takes me back to the page I was on.
I also have some silly hard key for internet, but hwen i press that is takes me to a home page which is annoying. But just hitting the back button, or going back to internet explorer through the start menu, takes me to the last page i was on.
Contact Sync Issue
Is anyone else seeing this issue?
So I took the advice of another member and deleted all my contacts on gmail. Changed the view to older and imported my contacts. Then I sync on my device and all my contacts are back on my phone including the addresses etc...
The only problem is my notes are not all on the phone. I have a long set of notes for some people and on one contact half the notes show up the other half dont. I go into gmail and it shows all the notes for the contact...
Seems strange, anyone else?
google calendar
that answers a lot of my questions. On my dash if i go to another app then go back to internet explorer, it's shut down and i have to reopen it and thread through to get back to where i was. The calendar question is still a mystery to me. It was my understanding that they didn't include sync so you would use google calendar. (I have the app the uploads my outlook into my online google calendar. I use my phone as a pda for business. I'm assuming if im out of cell range, I can't access my appointments. Here's hoping for a real calendar on my g1 that syncs with outlook! Looking forward to your next post. Scott
go look at my post in this section
the app i loaded from google let me cross sync with outlook
now if they can just get this working with contacts
i am on the g1 sorry about short reply
Glad my info worked for you. Bad news about the notes, maybe when we get our G1's, we'll figure it out
If my memory recalls, there are labeled fields in Outlook that google doesn't support.
I'm sure with a more detailed syncing program we can sync what info go into what field of Google.
For example:
Birthday in outlook...Google doesn't have a birthday field. It notes it as a birthday.

You can have a second google calendar called birthdays and sync all appointments from outlook with the category of birthday assigned to them. This would be filtered through an app called GSyncIt
how about notes and tasks
is there anyway to sync these??

Exchange calendar & contacts sync to Nexus but not to Google account

I have a stock Nexus One for AT&T running Froyo 91. My Outlook Exchange calendar and contacts (which is my primary source for each) sync perfectly to the phone, but will not sync to my Google account. I have tried deleting and recreating my Google account calendar and contacts; alas, to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

It won't sync to your google account just by setting it up on the phone. It still pulls from the multiple sources to give you a single view of all your events on the phone itself. If you want to sync your calendar/contacts to your google account itself, you'll need to use Google Sync. http://www.google.com/mobile/sync/

Apologies for the confusion; I'll try again. My Exchange email (and *.edu extension), contacts, and calendar all sync to my Nexus One just fine. Likewise, the email from my Google account syncs to the native Google email app on the phone. However, my Google calendar and contacts both remain empty; in other words the Nexus One calendar and contacts are not syncing to my Google account. I hope this clarifies my issue. Thanks again.
@kmhor
Two things. Have you checked the sync settings for google to make sure calendar and contacts are syncing?
Secondly, and more basic, do you have anything in that google calendar and contacts?
Also if it is google apps set up through your edu (I have that) which you are trying to sync have they activated the Cal / contacts?
Most likely it is the first setting.

Yes I have checked the settings and they are set to sync. Second, no, my Google account calendar and contacts are blank. This is the point: I want to populate them by syncing from Exchange via my phone. I hope this clarifies my question. Thanks for your reply.
So you want to go from exchange to your phone and then to Google.
No your phone does not do that.
Your phone keeps the Google stuff separate from the MS exchange stuff. It combines them in to a single view on your handset.
You can migrate the calendar using MS outlook on your PC. Open outlook and sync to your MS exchange account. Then download google calendar sync:
http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955
And this will sync your calendar from MS outlook to Google calendar.
I don't know how to migrate Contacts or Notes.

Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry. This seems like a significant impediment to wide-spread adoption of Android for business users. Like it or not, MS Exchange is a huge established base for business. The idea that one cannot maintain a single list of contacts, tasks, and notes, in addition to a synchronized calendar calendars between one's work and non-work systems is vexing. For all it's other challenges, Windows Mobile does this pretty well.
OK, off my soap box and on to Google's N1 forum with the suggestion. Thanks again.

You misunderstand. Your phone will sync google calendar, mail and contacts to google, and exchange mail/calendar/contacts, to exchange server. It will show gmail under gmail, and exchange mail under email. It will combine Google contacts with Exchange contacts in a single list on your phone. It will however keep them segregated. You can NOT cross sync a gmail contact with exchange server. This is right and as it should be.
In your calendar or contacts you can select to show gmail contacts, exchange contacts or both.
I have owned WinMo phones from 5.0 onwards, and I can tell you winmo can not do any of this. It can only sync contacts/calendar to one account, either MS exchange, or gmail. And that's only because gmail is compatible with exchange prtocol.

Mr_Rader: Thanks again for your help. I think you just answered my question. My hope is to be able to seamlessly maintain a single list of contacts between Exchange and Google. In other words, if Mr. Smith's phone number changes and I update it in Exchange while at work, I would like that change to be reflected in Mr. Smith's Google contact when I want to call him from home and am looking him up his contact information on Google contacts. If I understand you correctly, this cannot be done and I would need to update his contact twice to ensure consistency.
My reference to WinMo related to the ability of my old HTC Kasier to essentially serve as a conduit between Exchange Contacts on my work account and Outlook contacts on my home machine. When I synced via USB at home, it compared the contacts on Exchange to those on the home machine, and updated both to reflect the information in the most recently updated version. This is what I am trying to acheive here.
Thanks again.

I use a licensed syncing tool (gSyncit) to sync my work calendar (in Exchange 2007) from Outlook 2010 to my google account 'Work' calendar. It then propagates to iCal on my Mac and my Nexus One.
This effectively is using my Google account as the conduit rather than the phone - would this be an acceptable alternative? gSyncit handles contacts, calendars, etc.

[Q] HELP - Major Sync Issues with Google Calender - Android 2.1 - Samsung Vibrant

I thought it would be a great idea to sync my work outlook account with Google calendar via Google sync on the desktop.
I synced my outlook to Google calendar just find until I realized that there is no option to select a sub calendar so it synced thousands of events from my outlook to my primary calendar in Google.
Since my Google calendar account is also synced with my phone, my phone now has thousands of events with out the ability to toggle them getting my personal and work calenders all in one.
I went into Google via web, and deleted ALL events and wiped everything clean. I wanted my phone to also be clean. When I synced my phone the changes did not reflect what I did on the web.
I forced synced for the past 8 hours, and turned the phone off twice since then.
I found that it is syncing but not removing the old events. I change the calendar name in the web and it also changes it on my phone. But it never removes all those thousands of events off my phone.
Another test revealed that if I add an event on my phone, it will sync to the web.
If I add an event it will sync to my phone.
If I delete an event on my phone, it will delete it off the web.
Here is the issue, if I delete an event off the web, it does not delete it off my phone.
How can I remove these thousands of entries on my phone now?
I cannot remove my Google account and re-sync because when I tried it said my only option is to factory reset which I prefer not to do.
Thanks.
Try to change your google account password on web. When your phone won't sync then remove that account and add a new account but you can still use the same account name. I hope I make sense.

It's a complete joke that you need a Google app in order to sync 2 Microsoft products.
On the bright side of life: If you then go to Android then all your contacts will be already waiting for you
It's funny that WP7 syncs everything with Google...even the calender so Gmail is also a way to export all your appointments from Outlook to WP7

True, but windows live is what they expect you to have all your contacts info under, which I find wierd considering it's only really been used for this now, so be wary when adding your live account, as all your email contacts will be visible and you can't do anything about it, delete them from the phone, they'll delete from your email account so be CAREFUL!!!
To get around this as mentioned in a previous thread somewhere in the HD7 forum, I created a new live account, made that the default when signing into windows live and entering my key, then added an email account which was my main hotmail, this only syncs emails, nothing else, hope this helps prevent problems!!!!
Been trying to get my contacts from my android phone to new 7.5 wp for 2 days now and it seems there is nothing such as a "phone book" in WP7.5 only social networking sites or email accounts to "SYNC" with..??
No such thing as a simple transfer... What happened to user friendly?
What if you do not want your phone book spread all over the internet??... ie: just have them on your phone to use as intended?
Some of us are not teenagers whose life revolves around Facebook, Twitter and buying music online. Microsoft appears to be totally ignorant of this?
A great phone OS overtaken with marketing traps and complicated ideology.
I myself did not use gmail (google).
Before I flashed I did a sync with Outlook 2007 ( made sure all phone contacts were in address book)
Then I exported address book out of Outlook ( saved as .csv file).
I went over to Hotmail and imported the .csv file, cleaned up any double entry in the Hotmail address book.
Flashed my phone to WP7 and all my contacts were back in my phone after first sync with Hotmail.
Now I assume live.com is the same as hotmail.com, and the options will be available to import a file from your pc into your address book.
Yes it's a small pain ( 10 min in all on my part), but going forward I will now always have my contacts backed up in Hotmail
gmail works fine for all mentioned above and then some.
Way before i flashed WP 7.5 i already had a gmail account. Now the next bit maybe particular to me but here goes.
I do business with 2 main companies and as such i have an email account with them and i have a local email account with my service provider. Always nice to keep business separate from private email i think.
I also travel around Asia quite a lot and using outlook i sometimes have trouble sending and or receiving emails to all 3 pop accounts. So i ended up using webmail which sucks cos i have 3 separate web mail pages to check. Theh i discovered gmail can fetch mail from any other account and collate it to one page. so if i am having trouble ( usually in China or the Philippines) i can go to an internet cafe and read and send mail.
Stick with me ill get to the good bit.
So i have all my mail being checked and stored on gmail ( i can still get it in the normal way as well , just leave on server for a day so google gets chance to grab it as well (usually every hour))
Now when i went to set up my HD2 WP7.5 Google mail .... it already recognized the all the 3 different accounts as folders ( like imap exchange server) . Best is you can pin each folder to start screen so you can see which folder has new mail. Works fantastically well ..costs nothing just a bit of set up time!
ANd i can access everything from any computer in the world that has an internet connection and a web browser
Of course some people are paranoid ( only my opinion) about having mail and contacts and calenders "stored" in the cloud. I think this is somewhat over anxious . Do we really think our contacts and data is safe at home.??!
In all my years of mobile devices ( and there have been many trust me) i have only just started to use email seriously while "on the road", the email client in WP7.5 on my HD2 is great.
On my PC at home i have 2 little programs to keep Outlook contacts and calender in sync ...all works fine.
Good luck
OK, but how the hell thay came to an idea, that one would transfer contacts only one way, to WP7?
I got a Nokia Phone of my friend who wants to move to android, and I was going to take his Nokia 610 for some tests. However, he asked me to transfer all his contacts to his Galaxy S2. He does not have google on his phone, neither Windows Live.
I decided to set up a google account for him. But what I've found is , there is no way to move a contact registered in his phone as a "Phone" contact (he didn't have any google on his phone up to now), to google.
Or am I wrong.
In Nokia 610 you can only regeister a new contatc as a one to by syncted with google. You can not do it with old contacts registered before a google account was set on the phone.
You guys mean, such system is a friendly one? A future????
I used to run my old HD2 on Windows Mobile 6.5 and so on, and that was a good OS. And now what is this?
Now I've already done my tests on WP7 and never more. And my friend will have to forget about his contacts. I will not advice him to sign for WL and install Outlook with all this stuff to end up converting .csv files.
With Android Galaxy, you can use google, or Kies to sync directly without any "cloudy" stuff and propagate your contacts all over the world. Why M$ thinks they can push us to forget about simple solutions and push us to show up with all our private life?
Contacts back from 6.5 - wp7
This might be a little of topic but i'll give it a shot here anyways.
I have just installed wp7 on my mothers HD2 and before I was sure to backup with "Windows mobile device center" to not lose anything. But when i'm done and everything and want to get the contacts to her phone, it will not connect to the device center. What can i do to fix this? I know i should have synced them with outlook or something but i thought the device center would be enough.
Please help me with getting the contacs back to the phone
all contacts sync with Live account (or Google)... add again Live account and contact is back (if Live account used before)... dont use WMDC for sync... this not tool for WP7 (is necessary for some things but not recommended for this)
if you want make backups use WP Backup v1.0 tool... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34547938
if you have outlook contacts, export to cvs file, import to Live or Google account and sync with phone (look tutorial in my signature)

Okay. She doesn't know if she used live account with wp 6.5, but I have a vague memory of setting it up on her phone.
But if she doesn't, is there a way to retrieve the contacts from wmdc without having "the old phone" plugged in?
Thanks for the fast reply btw!

Yeah, from 6.5. We had some contacts on the sim, from a previous backup a while ago, but there is several more added after that.
Is it posible that wmdc has the contacts saved somewhere in a special file? I'm looking for one but cant even find program directory on my pc...

Google has recently announced that they will not be supporting exchange server for windows.
This is all against windows phone devices, they will go on supporting ios devices.
Now my whole contacts (not much 300+) are all in my gmail contact service. And most of them have their pictures.
Yesterday, i logged in in my outlook.com, and added a contact there..
(it was my first log in in there i've always used my hotmail and now cant go back to hotmail.. any way they are all the same!)
I found out that "i cannot insert a picture to my contact" in outlook.com.
I'll be using a phone, when someone calls me i can't "see" who's calling.
I dont know you, but for me its unacceptable!
I'm looking for a new way to sync my contacts with my HD2 and my ipad! (yeah i used to syn my google contacts also in there)
So can some one please tell me if there's something i can do?
Any useful offer, i would be much appreciated..

Outlook Calendar & Contacts Sync now available using PC Companion

Just noticed the latest version of PC Companion (updated today) includes 'Sync Zone' which allows you to sync your phone Calendar and Contacts with Outlook 'via Google'.
Haven't tried it, cos I got this set up ages ago using gSyncit, but, obviously, Sync Zone is free so good news for anyone who wants to do this but hasn't worked out how to yet.
i don't have it on mine
version 2.01.110
I Don't know how is it going to clash if you are using Moxier to sync with Exchange (which I'm doing ATM)
Anyone knows about this, please share.
Thanks.
mine showed up finally. works good, some of my merged contacts come into outlook wrong.
I have the update also and I am using it now to sync the contacts between my Google and Outlook now, I use companionlink software to sync previously.
I tried this, and it seems to work well enought. Only problem is it doesn't let you select what Outlook profile you want to sync. In my case, I have two Outlook profiles setups (one for me, and one for my wife). When I tried to sync my wifes contacts onto her phone it grab my profile and merged my contacts with hers.
Anyone know how tell it to use another Outlook profile?

I assume you are using two profiles under the one Windows log on.
The best way is for your wife to logon as a different Windows user. In that way everything is kept separate. It makes life a lot simpler.
This is great news for me. Add the improvements with 2.1.A.0.435, including multitouch and video editing and SE is starting off the new year pretty well. Although, you wouldn't know it with all the whiners bashing SE here on xda.

I've tried and worked OK for me... callendar and contacts sincronized... the problem is, MS Outlook works very bad with Gmail IMAP account, and crash every time i try to move a mail from one folder to another.
So far, back to Mozilla Thunderbird for me.
For me, it keeps crashing everytime I run a sync

same...Unknown error
It has totally screwed up my contacts - added random e-mail addresses where they shouldn't be and deleted contacts it shouldn't have. I've used sync software for years, and I understand how it should work - be warned - it doesn't - if you want to try it, make a back-up of *both* address books first.
I click on SE Sync from PC Compaion
i look at Dashboard and only my bookmarks were synced
Everyone should be careful with their outlook sync. Google uses non-standard labels for contact fields. If you have custom labels for anything, it will not translate well to outlook. Same thing with their imap protocols.
Outlook sync with google using pc companion
is anyone else having this problem - when I generate an Outlook appointment, it synchs to Google Calendar fine, when when it re-syncs, it rolls back the time & date in Outlook Calendar ...... ??????????
