[Q] Nexus 10 vs Transformer Infinity - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In terms of overall performance which one is genuinely better, price is no concern because I can get them both for $399, storage is not a big concern because I don't plan on taking picture or having TOO MUCH music on there.

I cannot speak as to the Nexus 10 yet, as I do not own one. Waiting for Google Play to get them back in stock.
I can, however, speak regarding the Infinity as for a brief period I owned one... actually went through four. Trust me, you do NOT want that tablet! Asus threw a decent CPU at it, but went cheap on the storage and as such its prone to stutter quite a bit. It's enough of a hit to harm the user experience... my HP Touchpad running CM9 ran circles around it and that thing was a full year older!

Get the nexus ive owned the infinity when it came out and while the screen is great and also build quality, the I/O lag is terrible you have to flash cleanRom to even get any kind of smooth performance and even then it cant match the nexus 10.

I used CLEAN ROM and Data2SD with a UH1 Micro SD, still laughable performance by comparison.
In my opinion, if you don't need a full fledged Keyboard dock (full size usb port, and extra battery) then get a Nexus.
The transformer is cool, and if the keyboard dock didn't cost an extra $150 I might have kept it for school. Otherwise, it's got a brushed aluminum back.

If you don't care about storage then there is no question you should get the nexus 10.
Speaking as a tf 700 owner, the user experience is awful.
The build quality is nice, screen is the best and it's got cool features but if constant stuttering and lag doing the most basic operations like opening a web page then switching to Kindle and going back to home screen, bothers you then stay away from the infinity.

+1 for all posts about how laggy the t700 is. Made a huge mistake buying this one.

I also had a TF700T....kept it for 58 days and returned it to Best Buy (60 day return option under Premiere Silver). Great case, overall fit and finish very nice, nice screen. But the periodic lag was annoying, there were periodic freezes, and I didn't want to depend on a custom ROM just to get normal performance. I liked the extra battery in the keyboard/dock, but found the keyboard to be unnecessary. In the end I found that I just wasn't bothering to use the Infinity.
In contrast....I love the Nexus 10, carry it and use it all day. Excellent device that will keep benefitting from Android evolution frequently and long into the future.
beamed from a Nexus 10 far, far away

I have had both as well. Although the 700 was decent - I am loving the N10. Wonderful screen and fast in all aspects....including games.

I have owned both, the TF201 Prime (C1) and then the TF700 (C6) which I exchanged the 201 for, and now after having N10, I'd take it over both- anyday of the week.
Keyboard attachment with battery and the look are really only things going for them there's so many cons to both all you have to do is go into one of their forums to get an idea of what is wrong with them. (Backplate interference, dead GPS on the 201, I/O, popping/clicking screens etc) 400 imo is still too much I wouldn't pay much more than 300 for either after all the BS I've experienced with them personally.

As the other posters noted the Infinity suffered from lag issues. I kept it for 30 days. The Nexus is clearly superior in performance.

Yup, I'm another one who went through 3 of them before getting the N10.

Love my infinity. Awesome tab. People say the screen on the N10 is better but honestly its not. Its pixel density might be higher (spec sheet booster) but the contrast sucks to all hell. I not rooted or unlocked and performance on the infinity since the updates is amazing. Add to that the form factor, full keyboard for extra battery and external storage and you have the best tablet IMHO. I would say around with both but honestly the infinity to me just the better all around device. Take a look at all the comparison sites and they will confirm what im saying. Also are you a student or just looking for a media consumption tablet? Best of luck!

I've had tf201, tf700, n10 all at the same time. Performance wise you can't beat the n10. Its a beast but the form factor of the Asus is awesome. If you're only concern is performance don't get an Asus. Even with cleanrom, clemsey kernel and data2sd its not going to beat the n10 on performance.
N10 is also future proof for a while and will probably have a better resale value vs the tf700. Just in case you decide to sell it and go for the new tegra4 tablets

IO speeds on the nexus 10 (above 100MB/s) are second to none. In fact they are twice as fast as the second fastest device. They are more than 5 times faster than the IO speeds on the infinity. That alone plus the cortex a15 and the ridiculously fast gpu makes it a much better performer.

[Q] Transformer Infinity, Note 10.1, or Nexus 10?

New to the forums, looking to by my first tablet. Not really interested in the ipad 3. I want a tablet which will be good for watching videos and playing a bit of games, also want a good web browser. Which tablet will be ideal out of these 3? My budget is $500, so the price factor doesnt really matter. Neither the s pen or the keyboard dock appeal to me. Thanks!
The Infinity would be the worst drain of money you could even consider. For its price, the hardware is underpowered - typing on it right now, Browser (stock, not Chrome - it's too slow to run Chrome smoothly) force closed (this is TF700 hate-post V2) and the keyboard froze for a good 10 sec when I got back in. Build quality and the like is down to chance, but even if you get a well-built one, the I/O sucks, Tegra 3 can't push 1080p without crying to its mother and to be honest, Asus' software updates are unreliable. The alarm clock's still broken from the one before last.
The Nexus 10, on the other hand, has the most powerful processor in any mobile device right now, and it is well-equipped to power the much, much higher resolution it has to offer. You can pretty much guarantee that it will provide you with the best Android has to offer on tablets both now and for a long time into the future. The Infinity is already obsolete.
Also, the Note's only real draw is the S Pen, though for some that is pretty significant (it's like a Wacom tablet computer). So if that isn't what you're after, save yourself some money and grab the Nexus 10.
The NEXUS hands down, 100%. It is the fastest Tab on the earth with the best screen of all. If only I did not buy a N7.
If I was looking to buy a 10in tab, then I would go for the nexus 10.

I'm still within my return period at Best Buy -- and will be bringing my Infinity and dock back, and getting a Nexus 10. Build quality for mine is fine -- actually very solid, nice form factor, superb battery and nice display. But it IS a bit laggy, and between ASUS and NVidia, there's way too much in the way of arcane routines to go through in order to unlock, root and safely flash it. Nexus 10 promises to be a much better experience in this respect. I'll be getting the 32GB N10.
If the Nexus 10 had 3G then I don't think I would hesitate to chose it, I have a nexus 7 and I'm thinking about giving it to my wife and getting a new Nexus 7 32GB+3G version, from the look of how the nexus 7 is going, I may just wait for the Nexus 10 in a few months when they bring out the 64GB+3G nexus 10 (although 32GB is probably more likely, I may just hold out for the 3G version)
Thanks for the input guys. Do you guys think the nexus 10 will get custom Rom like the cleanrom on the tf700, because I would like flash lol.

Nexii have classically been rom magnets, though there is always the danger that they've finally released enough to dilute this effect. Also important is the number of users, which is also correlated to the number of roms. The 10 inch android tablet is not proven (but this is probably its best chance).
CleanRom on the Infinity is an Asus ROM, trimmed lovingly. It's still a manufacturer ROM, though, and I would bet you 2 Nexus 10's that the Asus UI never makes it to the n10.
I returned my infinity for the reasons in post 2. I'm not bitter, I just think my $500 is better spent elsewhere when my phone is better than my tablet...

It's not worth spending your money on TF700T because it lags crazy! I'm finally Unlocked (Clean rom 2.3) But what's the point? I just voided my warranty for a device that can't run smoothly without a Custom Rom. Get a device that actually runs smoothly without any type of tweaking.
My Infinity works great but It's not the same feeling like i had before i unlocked it (Fear of Bricking). I might even buy N10, Hopefully i don't get same experience i had on infinity.
Since that is cleared up, I would say Nexus 10 seems like a better deal in Hardware but If you want features like S-Pen and what not then Note is great. But at end of the day, you will be frustrated with slow OS than not having the features (S-Pen, Multiscreen)
Wait till there are couple of reviews for Nexus 10, I will not buy anything else until i see a video for it.
TF700T Disappointed me.

yea, if I were you I would avoid the TF700, especially if you don't want/need a keyboard dock.
It has a nice deisgn, and a great screen, but it is laggy as crap and I haven't rooted mine so the overall experience sucks.
On paper it's almost the perfect tablet. Unfortunately Asus really dropped the ball on this one.
I'm probably getting the Nexus 10. Then selling it if Asus makes a really nice Transformer replacement at CES. Or I'm switching to Windows 8. I have no idea what I want to do.
People , I was checking the App store , and found a good number of Apps supported for the tablet , Apple may boast a 275000 app selection , but many of them are just show off (like the brain explorer , titanic time) and so forth , they look good for a couple of weeks , until their charm fades away
The main ones are content comsumption apps , and the market has a handful of them (CNN , cnbc , even TV streams) Google docs on google drive is a charm to use.
PLus I wont be bogged down by itunes all the time ,
Nexus 10 is a definate buy if u r not in the apple ecosystem

Mm. One of my key reasons for not buying anything Apple is to use one to its fullest, you need the whole iRange, and Mac has the disadvantage vs Windows when it comes to ecosystem (especially games) so I don't really want to.

If you want a Mac and don't hate your money:
Buy a wicked Windows PC/laptop for 1/3 the price of a mac with comparable hardware
Do this
Use in full screen mode
Profit
To those who are saying the Note 10.1 and the Transformer Infinity are ****ty tablets, how could you possibly think that? Have you never used a Coby tablet running GB?
To answer the OPs question, don't buy a tablet at all. Tablets are transitional technology, they won't be around forever and the ones that are brand new depreciate in six months and become totally outdated in a year. Even if tablets weren't a completely pointless waste of money, even if you could find some productive use for it that would make it practical for you to own one, no matter what tablet you buy it will be totally outdated in a year. So I say spend your money on something else.
After having all three, I'm holding on to my Nexus 10. The my experience with the ASUS TF700 was frustrating, and after multiple returns for a variety of issues I got a "good" one. Stock it's a frustrating experience, and making the necessary modifications voids your warranty.
The Note was a great tablet, although I'm not a fan of TouchWiz it wasn't so bad. It stomped the TF700 in web browsing too. The S-Pen was a novelty for me though, so I figured I'd save some money.
The Nexus is a beast, no regrets.

For your requirements, watching movies and playing games, I'd recommend:
1) Galaxy Note 10.1
The CPU/GPU and resolution are balanced right and all games are fast. Screen on battery life is consistently ~8 hours. Benefit is it's not just a consumption device but also creativity and productivity with pen for drawing, paperless note taking, etc. Price was dropped to $499 for 32GB version to compete with Nexus 10.
2) Nexus 10
Has potential but games need to be optimized for it and the ridiculously high resolution. Battery life, sound quality and screen quality are behind Galaxy Note 10.1. It's a brand new device so there are minor issues that need to be addressed with the upcoming OS updates.
Skip the Tegra3 Infinity. When looking at Google Play comments for games I always see people reporting performance and games not working on TF201/300/700 devices while it's fine on other devices. I had the Nexus 7 and some games like Nova 3, etc. are laggy while fine on the other devices.
Another option unless you're anxious to get something now is to wait closer to Christmas and hope for new devices to appear. A Galaxy Note 12" 1080p with 4-core Exynos 5450, 4GB DRAM, etc. would be ideal.

Should i buy... N10,N7 or a digital camera?

So im not sure if i should buy the Nexus 10 the Nexus 7 or a Sony H30V digital camera:silly: Is there a huge difference in performance between the N7 and N10 wondering if anyone here owns both and can give me a better advice on what to get, I currently own a Nexus 4 but i want a bigger screen mostly to browse the internet
I had an N7 and it was great in every way, however after about 2 months I quickly realized it was too small. Reading books and light browsing was good, however zooming in and out on websites got old. I now have an N10 and am very happy. I am just a big tablet guy, but the N7 is much more portable. Both tablets are great, however the question is what size tablet person are you........or get the camera. Good luck, but there is no bad choice

N10 is actually faster than the N7 is... a lot faster. However, it also overheats more and thus throttles the processor, which makes it lag a lot when the processor is heated. From experience, the throttling starts around 5 races in NFSMW, and around 3 multiplayer matches in MC4. Normal usage, probably not a problem at all.
Battery life is awesome, especially with custom kernels. On stock, it's around 10-12 hours web browsing, etc.
Screen size is your preference, though the 1600p screen is amazing. I've heard that if you buy it from the Play store, you get less light bleed issues, but I'm not sure. I got it from the Play store, and mine is fine.
All N10's have a little bit of a multitouch issue in which if you put your palm on it, the touchscreen will be very wonky to touches, but it will reset itself within a few seconds. N7 has its own multitouch issues.
In short, I'd go for the N10 over the 7

Throttling (to an extent) can be lessened via undervolting luckily
As for a camera; I find my Nexus 10 perfect for a camera. 5MP is around the same resolution that's view-able on the N10 (if I understand right anyway), and pictures come out pretty clear; it's the best camera I've ever owned
With that said though, apparently most people laugh at the idea of using tablets for cameras... I find it pretty cool though
I purchased the N10 mostly for games when I'm not near my Desktop, and so far it's managing to do that pretty well Only gaming-related issue I have is that osu!droid doesn't like multi-touch for whatever reason (had the same issue on my Nexus 7), but hopefully that'll get fixed at some point.
Thanks so much for your feedback guys i'm leaning more towards the N10 at the moment, i went to sam's club and played around with the N7 i found it kind of small for me, but the fact that the N10 is sold out, and that the price for the sony camera and the N7 combined is just as much as the N10 is making harder to make a decision.
I just don't wanna get the N7 and end up disappointed its the performance
I've got both and I still like and use my N7.
The N10 is definitely faster and has the better screen. The N7 is no slouch though, before the N10 it was the fastest tablet I've used or owned and I've used and owned quite a few (Asus, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and Apple). I like that it's portable and its pretty good for gaming, the Tegra3 is very capable.
For one handed use the N7 is better, it feels like a slightly larger version of my N4 whereas the N10 provides a completely different experience.
It really depends on what you're looking for, I've found uses for both because they do different things.
For the money, both are excellent value and you can't go wrong. Just determine what you'd really do with it and go from there.

The N10 is a better/nicer device in almost every way except portability. I still love the N7 for its portability and it holds its own performance wise too.
Hopefully things will get even better for the N10 as games/apps are optimized for the screen resolution and as more devs get involved and google shoots out some updates.

coming from tf700t

Hi,
getting rid of my tf700t due to terrible stability problems and Asus not being one jot of help. I had sworn never to touch an Asus product again but seem v limited for options when considering a high-powered and high res screen.
Can people confirm that both performance and stability on this tablet is much improved over the tf700 as I cant put up with random reboots again?
Oh, and does CIFS work as may then just get the 16gb version?
Cheers

Some people have random reboots. I dont know about the frequency comapred to tf700 tho. (I dont have random reboots at all) I can respond with "yes" to all other questions
Cant speak to the stability as I've been running CM10 on mine since day 2... but its having used both its definitely faster. If you dont mind the lack of a keyboard dock or SD card slot, its definitely a step up in every regard.

From what I've read Asus used really cheap flash storage in their TF201/300/700 tablets, which is pretty much the source of all their speed issues. The extra ram doesn't hurt though, and while the CPU is only dual-core, its based on ARM's A15 instead of A9 like the tegra.

Cheers. Just been checking the reviews on Tom's hardware and he doesn't give the screen a very good rating, complaining that the colours are much more vibrant on the ipad. Bit of a bummer as apart from this, there's bugger all on the market of a decent spec.
Can anyone make a favourable comparison to the new ipad's screen?

The tf700t and n10 use the same DDR3 RAM.
But the n10 is a HUGE step up from the tf700t.
Even if the Tegra 3 was clocked at the same speed Exynos' 2 cores are still about twice as fast as Tegras 4 cores. Before I got the n10 I was considering the tf700t mainly for the expandable storage and the cool keyboard dock with extra battery. In retrospect I made the right choice, 32GB is plenty and I have a case with bluetooth keyboard.

If you are sick of reboots I'd wait to see if next software version fixes it. I'm on my second device and they both reboot. 4.2.2 decreased it so far to about every 2 days for me. Like you, I have a low tolerance coming from a tf101 that had SOD issues after upgrade. Do some searching. Plenty of people say it reboots. Plenty say it doesn't. Which will you be?

Definitely just my opinion, but I love my nexus 7 & my nexus 10, and my nexus 4 for what its worth, but I have worked with practically every major tablet brand/model/manufacturer (in usa) including my tf700 Asus and don't get me wrong my Asus is great but its just not close to my nexus. Some of this is due to the development available on both and the lack of development I guess you could say on my Asus. I mean all three of my Asus tablets are still going strong (my tf300, my 201, and my 700) but finding a good stable ROM with features or ui I like has been more difficult at certain times. That's not to say I haven't had any issues with the nexus 10 ROMs or anything, but its never been too much of a problem for me to just find a new or updated ROM and things always seem to run better in general. Of course every user has different experiences on every tablet especially when it comes to custom ROMs and other mods, so again this is just my experience/opinion.... The only feature that's missing from nexus models to me is the expandable memory source of a micro SD card, I've always loved having that option on phones and tablets. But lately there's no shortage of decent ROMs on the nexus and other mods are also not very difficult to add if you need them. I use my nexus 10 kind of as my every day driver and go-to tablet for the most part. I teach a class for beginner android users locally and most of the time I use the nexus because its reliable and has good battery life.
Currently running nexus 10 with twrp rec, ROM is rasbeanjelly latest build v4.2.2-r1(might switch it up with diff ROM, but still kinda like this build), kept kernel that rasbeanjelly normally uses, and keep the nexus toolkit by mskip loaded on my pc in case I need or want to make any quick changes or have any boot issues it just makes things easier with toolkit---thanks again mskip.

Feeling that myTF101 was getting a little outdated, I decided to upgrade to the TF700t. I returned it after a few days after so many headaches. It would lag continuously no matter which ROM i loaded on there. The web browsing experience was lackluster at best despite the many tweaks i implemented. Also no ability to relock the bootloader after Asus latest update was the last straw since it would have voided my warranty indefinitely.
I decided to spend the little bit of extra money on the N10 with bluetooth keyboard case and I feel like i made the right decision. Everything is so smooth and speedy withno lags whatsover. I can even relock the bootloader if i need to.
I know I dont miss having the keyboard dock even though it wouldve helped with the battery life. But what's the point of having extra battery life if the user experience is lackluster to begin with?
I can confirm that this is a better tablet than the 700. that thing was a piece of crap all together. after extended use I found the wifi to become crap in and out. the thing lagged all the time. I can go on forever. I believe the nexus 10 is much more stable and quick.

A year ago I had a prime. Previously i was using an acer 500, and thought I was going to get a much better tablet, the numbers indicated it would be. The problem of the prime were noticed from the get go. Perhaps if i didn't own the acer, the problems of the prime would not have been so noticeable. I not going back over all the primes problems, there is enough posting to give you an idea. On an extended contract I was able to get prime replaced as a lemon with the infiniity.
The good
The infinity was a big leap forward for asus. It's been their and my #1 ever sense. A big jump all across the android spectrum. Top of the line graphics, cpu speeds and other things at the top specs list. But all was not rosey. Asus for some reason did not use a dedicated i/o system and the infinity and infinity users suffers for it. Several top Roms and jelly bean have helped make this into a real joy to use but it could have , and with its price tag should have been, much better. After entering a drawing last month from Android Police i won a asus 300 with key pad.
The ugly
I don't really think the 300 is ugly, but its plastic construction, and its overall design have been commented on several times. Dollar for dollar this might be the best of the lot. Asus learned from the prime and corrected many of its problems. Lowered some spec to reach a better price point. It's been my impression over the past year that the 300 was a pretty good tablet, and after a week of using it, my impression was justified. Instead of pushing the envelope they put together a decent reliable tablet at what was a very good price point. I say was, because i think the 300 is on the high side in the current market.
The showdown
prime is already on boot hill. With the infinity on balance mode, the mode i use the most, and 300 on performance i saw very little difference. I tried hitting start buttons together and watch load times. most infinity was slightly ahead most times but not always and sometime 300 was ahead. web pages mostly went to the infinity. to my eye streaming was equal. I have a hard time to actually seeing the screen deference. this may be due to my vision. 300 is a little softer and whites were not as bright, and for reading the 300 was easier on my eyes. Pictures looked fine on both. holding the 300 was easier than the infinity. 300 has a better balance and "plastic"made holding in bed much easier.
I also have the use of a kindle hd 8.9. Its my personal opinion the 8.9 in, give or take a little, is the best size for a tablet. I would give the kindle and infinity the edge on screen. kindle has the better sound. 300 and infinity have two cameras, more flexibility, jb 4.2, and in general a more rounded experience.
As i said 300 is a good mid range tablet, one that I'm glad to own and its not going to be shoved to the closet. when unlocked and running the latest build of cleanrom 300 got a 7000 score. Some individual owners of infinity have reached 7000 my personal best was around 6800 on the same rom. not bad little brother.

Nexus 9 and Tegra based tablets are "Tablets to Avoid"

My nexus 9 recently started doing this...
Credit to Andrew Spyker
I've always had Nexus items.. First gen Nexus tablet, second, 3rd.. hell I have a nexus Q
So with this new issue I've run the gamut of Nexus 9 issues. Frisbee backplate, speed that, so you have a reference understandable to the human mind, ill describe as glacial. Charge to 100% eta. 2017. I got stuck on android 5.0.0 because.. who the hell knows. And now randomly my tablet has what I can only describe as seizures. HTC wants me to RMA it.. but you know what, I do not want to RMA it because then I'd be given another one and I would rather have the current one blow up in my face then to subject myself to the false hope of receiving a replacement and assuming, nay believing that all is well.
This is twice Nvidia has been contracted to put a processor in a Nexus and this is the second time the result has been total complete garbage. The entire Nexus9 experience has gotten me closer than I have ever been to buying an Ipad.. Google's and to an extent all Android tablet makers ability to get a tablet produced that even comes close to an Ipad in its ability to run the same way every day has been weighed and measured and found wanting.
The phones, which by all accounts are still their main focus have not suffered like the tablets so I will continue to enjoy them.
They seem to be unable to produce a table that is consistent or compelling and are thus going through the motions and just making a tablet because they have to.. So the Ipad decision is because quite frankly Apple does "going through the motions" better than Samsung/Google/HTC apparently can.
Maybe this will all change.. maybe it will not. At some point I will make the change these manufacturers will not. One thing I will not do is be suckered into a new tablet every 12 months.
I'm not happy with my Nexus 9 either. It's lacking in both hardware and software.
Hardware:
- backlight bleeding
- too heavy
- flex in the back cover
- battery life is not that great
Software:
- random reboots / crashes
- RAM bug (causing chrome tab reloads for example)
- slow performance occasionally (probably caused by the RAM bug)
- software updates were rather slow for a Nexus device, we had to wait months for 5.1.1
I don't have any hope that Android M will fix any of the software problems. The Nexus 9 has been out for almost a year and there hasn't really been much improvement since the release.
I would like to buy an iPad mini 4 (never owned an iPhone or iPad, but I think there are no good Android tablets out there), the problem is that the Nexus 9 has a bad resell value (<250€) and the iPad mini 4 costs 389€ and I really don't feel like spending that much on a tablet again considering that I haven't even had the Nexus 9 for a year.
Asus zenpad 8.0 S. ... Love mine, sold my Nexus 9 to buy it. Super thin, great screen but get the CA version
I jumped on the bandwagon and bought the 32gb N9 from Google Play in December. After a month of use I felt it was an "okay" tablet. Last month I inherited an iPad Air 1st gen. The iPad gives a much more gratifying user experience.
I feel that Google really blew it with the N9, rushing to get a tablet out and winding up with a rush product at a premium price. I will be much more reluctant to go with another Google product in the future.
I don't know but I actually love my tablet... The biggest gripe I have with it is the tabs in Chrome refreshing, but besides that the tablet works great... There is a small light bleed but nothing as bad as my G3... Sorry to hear you guys had a bad batch, but what might have helped my tablet experience is that I rooted mine and running dirty unicorn...

Same here. And my N9 is bone stock.
hardware is fine, but the drivers running it are crap. stutters, background task getting killed, refresh on tabs when browsing, touching the screen ramps up the processors (it's why the browser uses more power than the screen, each touch takes a crap-ton of power. a few updates back fixed it to 1/2 but still is too much. lowering it to 800 and it stutters, my other tablets only ramp up to 300 with no stutter)... as crappy as samsung is with support i'd have gotten a better tablet sticking with them. i've tried four different roms with the same results and was on stock/rooted for the longest with fire-ice kernel.
I assume you've done a full wipe and ruled out it being a software bug?
If the company is offering to RMA a defective unit in favor of a non-defective one and you turn them down how is that Nexus/HTC/Android/whomever's fault other than your own?
Other than the backlight bleed I don't have too many issues with my Nexus. And that was purchasing a refurb scratch/dent 32gb model from Amazon Warehouse for $290. Is it what I'd expect for a $290 tablet? Absolutely.
I'd consider an iPad Air 2, but those guys are $600 and won't sync up quite the same as all my other crap. Or alternatively the Mini 4 ($500).
Mine is on Preview M unencrypted. I really like it. My 10 is a fine tablet, as well. The 7's I've had I've never really liked.
The apple tablets I've tried seem no different to me. I've even changed my Window animation scale 1, Transition animation scale 1 and Animator duration scale 1.5 and it acts just like an apple tablet.
The freeze on OP's video is caused by an undervolt-powersave thing. It has been reported many times and only an RMA can save you from that.
The RAM deficiency is caused by the one and only Chrome that consumes a ****load of ram on any platform. It fills my G3's 3 GBs of ram in just 5 tabs.
Just use another browser.
ive got a sluggish n9, backlight bleed and a few reboots. battery life is weak...
love aspect ratio though and still think this is still a good tablet overall...
There is no way anyone that is happy with this tablet uses multiple profiles on a regular basis.
If you fresh boot and sign into one user things are ok... not horrible or super fast but ok. Sign in to an additional profile and the tablet goes to complete hell. Stutters, stalls, crashes, etc.
Really sucks because its shared between myself and my girlfriend. This has been the case since 5.0.1 through 6.0 preview 3.
People are never happy with what they have. Yes the tablet has a few issue here and there. Very little consumer grade electronics are "perfect" there will always be something that bugs you.
I like this tab, took a little tweaking, as it usually does with any device to reach the standards of a "current XDA'r".
But at the very LEAST i would disagree with this being a tab to avoid.

The incredible pessimism doesn't apply here, nor belong, either. Get off the juice.

His post is misleading and mine is not pessimism when its reality. Everyone knows this tablet has issues worse than typical bugs or hardware annoyances.
Edit: I just finished flashing 6.0. I can't believe I am saying this but it looks like google has finally fixed most of the performance issues. I can finally load up multiple profiles/chrome browsing and it doesn't start hanging/crashing. 1 year later and they finally got it right. Too bad it still heats up when gaming but that's not as big of a deal.
I love mine personally, there is a tiny hint of backlight bleeding but it's hardly noticeable. Battery life isn't that great, but that's the only downside for me. It always gets me through 2 days of use anyway since I have a phone for other functions. I also would gladly take a slight issue or two for the vastly superior sound setup for media consumption. Apple could maybe get my buck if they integrated FF speakers, and good ones at that. Until then the Nexus is the best for me. I was also thinking about the Asus 8.0 too, it looks good but it's too damned small. I actually think my Nexus is a bit small too, but it's the biggest and best tab I could get for under $300
I've had all sorts of issues with my Nexus 9. Software is better now than it used to be. But up until 5.1.1, multitasking made me want to kill kittens. It's more usable now with the latest 5.1.1 revision on the Pure Nexus ROM and Fire kernel. Except for Chrome, even XDA makes it choke. HD video performance is hit or miss, MX player with Tegra plug-ins was OK and other media apps stutter with high bit rates. I'm not on M now but when I tried it the battery life improved so there is that to look forward to.
The screen bleed on the bottom has gotten worse.
I learned my lesson and won't buy Nexus products again till they are on the market for a while and are thoroughly reviewed/patched.
Stock feels a little clunky on the Nexus 9. Installed CM and it feels much smoother. Overall, I am fairly pleased with mine.
Then again, I do not use Chrome, rather I use Firefox with Adblock+.
I have has both gen 7, and now the 9. I have also had iPads' and a Sony Tablet.
The 1st gen 7 was my favorite. Its form factor felt the best in my hand, the 2nd while faster was uncomfortable to hold. I'm not an Apple fan but work gave me an iPad 2. I rarely used it. Seemed okay. The Sony Z3 Tablet Compact has AMAZING quality. I just wish I could put AOSP on it, not a fan of the Sony tweaks, but over all its made from great materials and its very smooth to operate.
The 9 for me has been great so far. I did the following as soon as I got it, these are things I generally do to EVERY Android device when I get it.
* Change DPI to the screens native DPI (288 in this case)
* Added a line in build.prop to enable hardware UI rendering. <-- not sure if this is really needed anymore so I continue to add it until I'm told its not.
* Hard code the DNS used to the Google DNS servers
* Set all animation scales to .5
* Force GPU rendering to ON
I have never had any crashing or RAM management issues. I DO have the light bleeding issue, but not bad enough to really complain about.
