i9300 broken after charging via portable charger? - Galaxy S III General

Hi there,
In a nut shell what has happened:
-Phone went through washing machine
-Phone placed in rice for 3 days. Recovered and was working fine afterwards. Only issue was reception bars not as good as before. Overall, phone worked fine for 2 weeks until...
-Phone was charged with portable usb charger for 2 hours
-When came back to phone, it was really hot to touch. Switched it on, it forced reboot.
-Left the phone for a few minutes to cool, reboot it again. It was functional for about 30-40 seconds (you can even make a short phone call) - but eventually it locks up and crashes again. This process continued after many trials.
-Flashed via odin official stock 4.1.1 JB - stuck on samsung animation. Also, when in recovery mode, volume buttons are very unresponsive.
Story in full:
My friend's phone has suffered quite a bashing recently. It went through the washing machine a few weeks ago - but survived. We put it in a rice bowl for three days and after a while it was back to normal - all functions working as usual. Reception seemed to be not as strong as before, but it more or lessed worked 95% as it did before the washing machine incident.
Now, the issue:
I plugged it into a portable charger (I've used this charger on my own i9300 before with no issues). I left it to charge in my bag to charge when 2 hours later I went to take it out. The phone was really hot and the phone itself was off. I switched it and it booted - I noticed it was charged to about 70%. But then the phone locked up and it forced reboot.
I assumed it was the heat, so I just pulled the battery out and let it settle down for a while. I put the battery back in and the same problem occurred. I could use the phone for about 30 secs when it just locks up and reboots. I go into my recovery screen (TWRP) and it does the same - crashes and reboots.
The problem persisted all day and so I just gave up - reflashed via odin stock 4.1.1 JB. It flashed fine, or appeared to anyway - but when the phone goes to boot it is stuck on the samsung screen.
What happened? Is my phone broken for good? Did somehow the portable charger fry the insides of the phone?
Any suggestions?

Another strange thing is when I insert an external sd card it works fine. WTF?

I honestly think your phone is f..ked up when you left in the washing machine. Sounds like hardware problem and u should see a phone repairer for an opinion. Was it you the one that wanting to go back to iphone?

Probable wet components degraded on the motherboard and or moisture has allowed tracking between components .

Hey,
Yep that's me - but this is a friend's GS3, someone I swayed onto Android. I'm still using the GS3. It's fine now. But yes - the phone is pretty wonky. Again, it works fine with an sd-card inside, but take it out and the symptoms above persist.

Situation update:
Everything works fine better than ever ONLY when an EXTERNAL SD card is installed. When none is installed the phone will crash, even in recovery mode
WTF?

Very strange ...... I doubt if any one can help you here..... specially when the phone works fine with ext sd card install ed.... I suggest take it to Samsung technical personnel or phone repairer for an opinion. By the way whart part of Asia are you from if you don't mind asking .....

Hi I'm an Australian, but of Taiwanese origin. Yourself ?
Also the external memory card literally is like this phones lifeline. You select unmount and it continues to work. But as soon as a physically eject the card the phone freezes, from here I have approximately 30 seconds to put the card back in, if I don't it freezes, if I do it returns to normal.
It's literally it's pace maker lol
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium HD app

Sounds like one of the BGAs under the sdcard reader has bad solder joins to me. The extra preassure provided by the card is physically completing the connection.
Partially disassemble and test by pressing the area by hand to verify.
Repair will require significant skill and a hot air reflow station.

You say phone works fine 100% when an external sd is installed
So leave an external sd card installed problem solved

Automatic Shutdown?

Hi, I picked up a new 7" Tab 2 a few weeks ago, and it seems to randomly do an automatic shutdown if i haven't used it for a while. Sometimes when picking it up after putting it down overnight, or after I've left it home, the tablet is off, not just asleep. It also doesn't seem to matter if it is plugged in to power or not. Is this normal behavior, or is there a problem?
I would say it's a problem. I've left mine for several days on and off the charger and it never shuts down. Are you stock?

Completely stock.
It could be a problem but, I've seen some tablets that have a setting to switch off after a certain amount of time. Check all your setting see if there's anything either ticked or highlighted by radio button to switch tab off
I have same problem one week ago, tablets restarts in my pocket two or more times in a day, since I installed cyanogen mod firmware al is ok, I was thinkin that may be an app is that make restart, not a hardware problem

Its software on your tab. Trust me lol. Wiping or getting another rom will probably fix it.

Possible problems with built-in battery

I'm thinking of ordering N4 when it comes back in stock.. but as with all androids we often get errors Ans phone freezes on stock builds.. its no secret android isnt as smooth as ios.... so what happens when the phone finally freezes and the screen doesnt respond and we cannot fix it by removing and putting back the battery?
Thanx

ASUS TF101 Does not turn on unless plugged in...

So... I cannot turn on my Asus tf101 unless I plug it in to a power source, once the screen lights up I can unplug it immediately and it functions normally when turned on. I bought this device refurbished from best buy a few months back, I dealt with the issue but now am looking to sell it. Any ideas on how to fix this? I have never rooted the device, however I have tried factory resets and cold boots.

Are you holding the pwr button long enough. If so,it sounds like the switch is bad.
I hold the power button for 12 seconds and try it with different variation holding volume keys. It functions fine when the device is powered on.

It could be a bad battery or your charger is only giving enough to power the device on. I would try a new charger first.

Do you have the keyboard docking station for it?
Are you on custom ROM or OEM?
What "app killers" are you running?
Some custom ROM's have had similar issues a long while back. maybe yours is getting that issue IF your running custom.
Keyboard dock, if you have it, does it do the same thing for powering on, where it needs to be plugged in to start the screen?
I only ask about the app killers because I had experienced a similar issue about a year ago due to an app killer I had installed. Removed it, and the phone worked fine. Put it back on and it reverted back to having to be plugged in to start the screen.
Have you tried a clean wipe of everything on the tablet? And I do mean CLEAN, no dirty flashes here (keep your pants on bud).
Lastly have you given the charge port a good ole blow out lately? Long bursts aren't really going to do any damage, but I would stick to short quick bursts of compressed gas, again NO VACUUM CLEANERS. They create static and the charge port is quite susceptible to static discharge.
I know your pretty intelligent, but let me put it out there again. DON'T be a fool and use alcohol on your tool.
This post made me laugh. I do not have the keyboard docking station. I have never installed any task killers as I do not believe in them. The tablet has been running the stock ROM the whole time and has never been tampered with.

But you never said if you gave the ole girl a good ole cleaning in the slot.
I would venture to say that you need to send it in to Asus or take it back to Best Buy (if your able to). It sounds like there may be a voltage issue with the digitizer or the inverter.
And NEVER EVER EVER Invert your digits while cleaning out the slot.
You also didn't say if you went deep up in the ole girl and gave her a good rootin.
I'm working with Asus right now and of course there's something wrong with my serial number. Nerve been rooted. Blew it out and that did nothing.

Please keep us posted as I am curious to know how ASUS customer service is to deal with.
Well, I am trying to send my TF to Asus to fix the problem and they are a bit annoying. I have just dealt with HTC before and that was wonderful, but here they have send me 4 emails asking me to wipe, to update and to do everything that I have already done, and after that they have sent me to another web to fill another questionary. With HTC I just had to told them the IMEI and in 4 days I had my phone back
I had similar issue with mine. It was one of the reason I took back to best buy and used the buy back.
I then picked up the Nexus 7.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I had a similar issue, do you use your device often ?
I figured out after a couple of months that each time it showed this behaviour the battery was in fact empty and it was in fact the root of the problem.
My transformer take much longer time to boot when plugged even with a full battery, and when it's empty it doesn't boot at all.
I must plug it, wait for it to be enough charged to boot unplugged, and do so. Then plug it back when started.
Considering that the transformer on stock cannot shut off when plugged to its keyboard (or even to USB ? Or is it just mine ? When I shut it off plugged to the keyboard then close it, it boot on again) When the tablet is left for several days unused the battery will be empty.

Yes I do. But even if the device is fully charged it will still not power on unless plugged in and I don't have the dock.

Do the power and volume buttons work normally once fully booted? I have had similar issues, one was improperly seated power button, the other was a loose ribbon cable way down in the guts of this beast. Also, was this happening the whole time you've had it , or after a firmware update?
Right now I'm dealing with one that the screen won't stay on once I get into ics unless I'm plugged in. I went in and noticed that if the auto brightness wasn't set, it works. So I tweaked the settings in display time off when unplugged and uninstalled some screensaver app, and now it's working fine. It was probably the first thing, even though was already set to one minute. Anyway, just letting people know sometimes it isn't hardware. But the op probably is since he's done factory reset.

I wish I could help you with that, but I was forced to downgrade mine to 4.2.2, wich gave me knox warranty 0x1, also I saw a norwegian online IT magazine claiming samsung has pulled the 4.3 update in USA and UK at least.

Agreed.. My old S2 started doing that.. It was the eMMC chip. You need to give more info about the phone itself, such as:..
How was the phone flashed?. If you used ODIN, was "USB Debugging" in "Developer Options" (active) Checked, also was "Re-Partition " in ODIN UN-checked, also did you use any 3rd party kernels or bootloaders or Radios,
Do you use a Case and screen protector, if not.. Have you dropped the phone, has it been cushed in your pocket.. or has it gotten Wet or condensation, maybe from excessive sweating or excersize.
Have you installed a Custom ROM.on it in the past but not read or followed the instructions properly, they are a minefeild if you dont follow the guides
Are you using a 3rd party Non Samsung Battery or a different Charger.
Has any hardware on the phone been replaced, such as the screen , camera or body part.. which may not have been put back properly.
Was the phone pre-owned, which case.. the previous owner couldve done anything to it..
Have you installed a faulty SD Card in the past or used an old SD from a Windows 7 or Windows 8 phone without formatiung it.
If the answer to these is No, Ide return it for a replacement or refund.
Good luck

How to fix wake up lag

If you are annoyed at the 2+ second wake up lag with the note 3, you can fix it by removing the sd card from the device. sounds weird but it works.
Or you could just disable media scanner.

This lag sucks! Is there anything else i can do to fix this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
I've used Rescan Media on other phones to keep the phone from scanning the SD card on every boot. I don't know if it'll work on the Note 3, but the phone is fast enough that I don't mind the 2 second lag. (The shortest lag I ever ran into that cost a life was well over 10 seconds. If takes me 2 seconds more to call 911, I don't think anyone's going to die.)
So every time you wake the device it takes 2s? Did it do this out of the box? I doubt it; so I'd suspect it's an app issue, or you've installed a bunch of wonky xposed modules or something.
My phone is stock for the most part. Haven't rooted the phone (killing me btw) but i did install your normal apps.
It lags from time to time and it does bother me. It shouldn't lag like that.

Have that turned off as well. Can't be that
This same thing existed on the note 2. It was always said that it was due to the exynos going into such a deep sleep that it took a second or 2 to gather itself and wake up so to say. Someone made an app that would keep a constant wake lock so it wouldn't sleep. Obviously you can guess the side effects but it did work.

So, is it possible that it is the button lagging?
I notice a little lag when trying to wake my phone but I also notice lag elsewhere. After the home button is pressed there is a small delay before getting to your launcher. The menu button also has a delay when opening the menu (wallpaper, manage apps etc) on launcher.

Ok, not 100÷ yet but thanks to someone else i may have found a solution.
He suggested that the problem comes from the sd card you use. He stated that he removed his old card and got a sandisk and it fixed the issue for him
I had my old pny 32gb card in but it has been giving me problems for a while. The note 3 was not reading it ( was at 1st)
So i took the card out and so far the lag is gone. Both on the lock screen and end call
Ill keep testing but so far there is a change. Weird.

Must be an issue with the earlier release models. I got mine less than a month ago and has a 32GB PNY card and no issues whatsoever. In fact it has NONE OF THE ISSUES stated in any of the threads on this site. If I press the wake button, bam! there it is. So this must be an issue for you early buyers.
I got my note 3 about 3 weeks ago. Dont know what model it is because i haven't looked.
My previous sd was given me problems before, had to reformat it twice and when I took it out it wasn't working. So maybe that was the issue.
I have a SanDisk card coming so lets see how that goes.
