[Q] Nexus 7 no longer charging or being detected at all - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
Last night my Nexus was intermittently being detected via my laptop nor my PC (on a number of different ports) and when I tried to charge it, it was detecting the charger intermittently too - I tried a new cable and turned it off and it came up with the charge animation in the center of the screen.
However, when I got up (~7 1/2 hours later) it had only charged 27% (up from 1%) and when I unplugged it to plug it in in the other room it has decided it will no longer detect the charger at all.
Any ideas? It's fairly new (Appr 2 months old) Or is it a warranty job!
Cheers
Edit - Using original cable and original charger, however I have tried a different cable and that didn't work. For some reason, the battery goes to the 100% icon in the tray (but it doesn't appear to be charging, i'm not sure if this is a red herring or a sign of something else)

Does it turn on/boot up into android okay?

HELP > Battery Is Not Charging at all (Via WallCharger / Computer USB)

Damn it..... i dont know what happened
it is still working perfectly yesterday
i did not drop the phone or battery, today the battery is still at 40% and as usual, before i went to sleep, i plug my phone on the USB Cable connected to my computer... but it is not charging.. and here i thought the error comes from my USB Cable , so i plug it into my wall charger ... but it is not charging at all!!!
and i thought, perhaps i have installed something , or some os faulty issue ... so i reset the phone via SETTINGS > About > Reset Phone
and after the reset.. it is still not charging...
argh what should i do... please help... anyone
i purchased this phone from singapore.. and i am indonesian.... the battery is currently at 30% , i am so afraid after it runs out of its juice, it will go away forever (because i cant charge it) T.T
what should i do....
(Is this battery and the one used on Galaxy S is the same? My sister has Galaxy S, should i try using her battery and try to charge it from my phone? .... ARGHHHH the omnia 7 is not even available yet in indonesia) T.T
Anyone help T.T
Get another charger it will charge get a new 1
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
you sure it is the charger?
You are talking about the wallcharger right?
usually it already charging via USB Connected to a computer.. but this time... the computer does not even detect if anything is connected.... (nothing happened when i plug this phone to my pc, usually there is a notification sound playing and my zune will autorun)...
damn it ... why this happened.. yesterday it is just fine (
damn it .. i am sleepy already..
i will go and sleep for now.. and left my phone turned off and plugged in the WallCharger
and hopefuly.... sigh.. it is still charing although no indication whatsoever is showing that
MAN... should i just try bang the damn battery hard onto the table... perhaps some of the chip inside the battery is misplaced by whatever unknown forced?!
damn it.. i never dropped the phone.... ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH
this is so frustrating
Relax
Relax man your charger is bad.
I have the same problem but my girlfriend have a Wave and start using his charger and everything works fine.
Buy a new charger
question
can i use any charger from any phone for this Omnia 7?
(the one that has USB Output of course, such as xperia1 charger)
if we can, then it is also not working.... and why suddenly it wont do anything when i plugged it in my Computer USB
the very same computer works perfectly yesterday, and suddenly it is not working..
I suspect either one of these is the problem :
1. the micro USB Connector in the Phone is broken somehow , hence the when we plugged it on, it does nothing
2. the Battery (which if i am not mistaken has a chip inside) is broken, hence explain why it is not charging at all (which a bit does not make any sense, if it is just not charging at least when i plug it on the computer, it should still detect this device...)
I am from indonesia, i can ask my friend who is returning from melbourne to purchase a new battery and new charger hopefuly
Okay to make things simpler.. i have a sister who own a Galaxy S
can i use the galaxy s wallcharger to charge my omnia 7? ah hell,i will try it anyway...
okay according to this
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SGH-I917ZKAATT
it goes great with galaxy s standard battery...
so i suspect, i can use my sister galaxy s standard battery and try to charge it using my cellphone
and i can also try to use my sister galaxy s wallcharger to charge my battery...
okay lets try ... hopefuly.... it is only the battery.. i can easily purchase a new battery... if it is the USB Connector on the phone... damn, how on this green earth can i charge my battery? OH we can use the kickstand battery charger?
hmm suddenly it is working now :O
thanks God... hopefuly it will never ever happened again T.T
Great it is working again
Any possibility that there is a way that the device forces a full recharge cycle to calibrate the battery?
Honestly i guess so.
I have the same problem...i can t charge my i8700 at all...what did you do to charge again???...i use a universal charger where i put my battery ...this happens for two weeks now..

Try allowing the phone to run out of battery and turns off, then plug it into the charger, i would love to know if this is a failure or be design behavior.
Put the battery in the phone,
Wait untill the phone goes completely off.
Plug the phone to the wall charger.
write back here
i tryed this but the same problem it turns on but only while the charger is pluged in when i pull it out the phone turns off...i try to hard reset nothing..there is no update to work with non retail devices...the phone is from three uk...i m from romania there is no way to return there to an service..(
Having the same problem. Been working flawlessly.Plugged it in a couple of hours ago,but it doesnt appear to be charging.
When I use the USB charger on the PC, it is recognised, and Zune opens up fine and Phone shows up.
Have tried two Mains chargers, the Omnia 7 one and the one that came with my Galaxy S, same problem.
EDIT:
Left it plugged in overnight and it charged fine.Used phone, going down to about half battery.Plugged it in and seems to be charging without a problem!
I've got the same problem as you guys for a couple of days now.
Thanks for your reactions i will try everyone of them untill my omnia 7 charges again

Do you have a bit of battery left?
Windows Phone 7 devices power up when you plug them in. Maybe the OS is not booting and because it is S-AMOLED display we cannot tell if it is on or not.
Try Hard Resetting without booting WP7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Omnia_7
Make sure you have a bit of power though, you don't want that to stop in the middle of the proccess
This has happened to me a couple of times. I think it's just a reporting bug, the battery is actually charging. I just have to restart the phone and it magically has charge
battery is charging too long
How long does take to fully charge the battery? For me it's about 4-5 hours with wall charger. Should not it be faster?
Mine is about the same for a full charge and I have also noticed my Omnia 7 not charging properly when I plug it into my MacBook Air however it does seem to charge fine on my Dell laptop for work.
Maybe the Omnia 7 is very sensitive for charging over USB on a laptop and needs a certain voltage for it to charge properly?
What works for me:
1. Original charger
2. iPhone 4 charger
3. iPhone 3GS charger
4. Blackberry Curve charger
Not tried any other micro-usb cables yet but will do at some point in the future.
I had the same problem too. The battery was suspiciously showing high levels for the last three days (went without a charge!). In the morning, the alarm did not go off, and I realised the battery was dead dead! Charged (wall charger) for 1.5 h without any use -- would turn off if I unplugged. Tried with the USB cable too (connecting to computer) and no use.
I read this post, and tried with the wall charger again, and it shows me ~60% battery, and seems to be charging normally!
Will post an update, but really seems like a forced discharge cycle to me too!!
Thanks for this thread, and I am interested in seeing if any more ppl are seeing such issues!
At least once, but sometimes twice a week, my battery keeps discharging while my Omnia 7 is attached to USB. And even the icon shows it should be charging.
The solution I use is taking the battery out for 10-15 seconds, put it back in, switch the device on, and charging works like it should be.
I hope they come up with a solution, because it's quite annoying.

[Q] Overnight: Charging to 100%, then discharging while still connected?

Hi there,
got a strange problem.
I plug in my N4 in the evening, it is loading up to 100% and there it begins to DISCHARGE (or in other words, stops to hold the battery at 100%) although still connected to the charger. In the morning I unplug the phone and have just around 70% left ... see attached screenshot.
Using stock charger and cable that came with the phone.
I hope this is not intended by Google? Running Android 4.2.1 Stock.
is this the only time it happened?
It is probably because of the charger. They definitely didn't include the best charger out there try another charger, you'll see improvements.

Thanks! Used my equipment (powered USB hub with another micro USB cable) from old phone until yesterday, and read about charging problems when NOT using the charger and cable that came with the N4. To see if that is maybe the problem I therefore unpacked the "stock" cable and charger - but it didn't solve the problem.
The most strange thing is, that it charges perfectly up to 100%! I would expect then that it stops charging to avoid overloading, but that holds the charge level at 100% until unplugged. I think this logic is not within the charger, but controlled by the phone itself (Software / Hardware Unit)?

Have the N4 about 1 week now and I realized this happening at least 4 times now. I'm usually plugging it in every evening and unplug it in the morning.
Its intended as a safety measure so it doesn't over charge when its 100 percent.... It's always been that way

Hmmm ... never experienced this 15 years mobile phones (at least 4 of them using Android and tons of different ROMs ...). What would be the purpose to plug in your phone in at 22pm, stop charging at 1am and begin the fresh day at 7am with again 30% loss of capacity? I would need to carry my charger stuff all day with me ...
As I said, I fully understand that it stops charging at 100% to avoid overloading - and also see the sense in this here -, but usually it should HOLD it at 99-100% until you unplug and not lose capacity while still connected to the charger.
Cheers
did you plug it into a USB hub that was plugged into a computer? that might be your problem. My N4 has issues charging from USB ports... it never holds charge properly.
This happened to me previously, ended up swapping my charger back to my Samsung OEM one and havent had the problem again.
Another time that this could happen is if you're charging via your USB port on your computer and you shutdown your computer which it will still show the charging icon but the status says not charging which could be changed by replugging the phone and/or having BIOS settings that enable usb power draw etc...
Just found this one ... maybe I'm not explaining my case very well, but it seems I am not alone ...

Yesterday I used the wall plug. All the years before I used a SEPARATELY POWERED usb hub. Even if the PC is shut, the hub provides power to the ports. Anyway, it doesn't matter - Charging is working perfectly on wall plug, usb hub, stock cable, non-stock cable ... before reaching 100% and phone disscharges. Picture in 1st post illustrates the disscharge while still "charging" (last bar at the bottom)
it's def. not normal. mine doesn't discharge, it can stay plugged in all night and it'll say 'CHARGED'

Exactly what I would expect! Now that I found the others on code.google.com having the same issue I think there was a batch of devices having it and that I might need to RMA ...
Well the reason why I was mentioning the charger (unless you've tested another one) is because I was using the original LG oem charger and for a while it would give inaccurate readings on multiple occasions. Example being I woke up (used wall charger) and it said 70-80% and the charge icon was still there but on the status it said 'not charging'. Another time was when it said 96%, unplugged and replugged and it charged to 100%. Then I use the phone for a couple of seconds and it drops down percentage again 96%~ and when/if charged it will say 100% again (giving a false reading).
I was thinking it was the cord because I used my bro's LG charger and it charged the phone 96, 97, 98, 99, 100 and not 96 -> 100% therefore the cord may have been the problem. Went back to my Samsung OEM charger and it has been fine since then and never had any discharging.
Are you using stock kernel?

I'm on 4.2.1 stock yes.
Thing is, that I'm not plugging it out! While being connected it suddenly starts to disscharge - Why the heck would you disscharge when you have a power source connected?! The "event" invoking the disscharge to me is the reach of 100%. Maybe this is a misbehavior of the overloading protection, to stop charging (as intended), but not restarting to charge at lets say 99% or 98% to get back to 100%. This would mean that when I'm using navigation in my car I would need to reconnectfrom time to time to trigger the charging again.

Yeah I know what you mean but its odd that I had this problem as well but disappeared when I swapped.
As for my USB/PC, that charges when the computer is on and off but when I turn it off, I would have to replug the phone to get it started again as it will have the same "charging icon" w/o it actually charging. My guess is that if the power source loses its power, even if its temporary it will stop charging. But when I using my Skyrocket a few months back I never had to replug the phone onto my computer to get it charging again but I do know that the computer will temporarily cut off power when you shutdown and bring it back to charge plugged devices. (didnt change any power states in BIOS).
So most likely it is something with the phone but it could also be a setting or some software error triggering a fail-safe or something.

I see definitely some issues in the charging logic in both of our cases here. You shouldn't have to replug your phone if you send your PC to sleep, as long as it still outputs the USB power. Since I would not expect the decision to charge or not to charge in the wall plug or in the USB hubs, I can only hope it is not a hardware problem of the charging electonic, but a software problem which could be patched. Also wouldn't I wonder if this has to do with the wireless charging option of the phone ...
come to think of it i had the same problem. charging from the PC when off via USB it would do the same thing as OP. charging through the wall works fine.
Well just found out I am maybe reposting the issue as I didn't find this initially ... similar (or same?) problem described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031246

[Q] Defy Charging problem

Hi,
Motorola Defy (MB525) with CyanogenMod 7.2 stable, original battery.
I bought it almost two years ago second handed, it should have now around three years.
Using the original wall charger, it does not charge the phone anymore.
The log shows a lot of lines like
Code:
I/usbd ( 1048): main(): Spurious Cable Event, Ignore
I reboot the phone but it didn't change anything.
I change cable and charger and the behaviour is the same.
The wall charger charges good other phones.
Now the phone is completely discharged.
I plugged in the wall charger and the led turns on white, the os starts but it turns off after few seconds.
Now I'm using a usb cable connected directly to a computer and the phone is off, only led white on.
After a while (5-10 minutes) the phone turns automatically on, it starts normally. But the phone doesn't see the charger.
Plug out the cable and plug in again (connected to the pc).
Now it's charging, but after a while (a couple of minuts) it turns off and there's only the white led on.
After a while (5-10 minutes again) the phone turns automatically on, it starts normally. The phone sees the charger (red led on), but it seems to me, that the charging rate of the bar is way too fast.
Some time ago (1-2 months), it happened something similar, but the phone was charging with the usb cable connected to the laptop.
After that the wall charger charged the phone. A couple of times it didn't work but I charged the phone via usb pc and later the charger was working again.
No visible damage to the micro-usb port of the phone.
The question is, is it the battery or (as I suspect) is the electrical part / usb problem of the phone?
If so, what is a reasonable expected cost of repair (I'm in Germany)... I'm afraid that it will cost more than 50€... then, is it better to move to another phone?
Thank you very much,
Giuseppe
[EDIT]
The charging rate (with the usb cable connected to the pc) is normal. The phone is working normally

Try buying a new battery/cable/charger from eBay. You will have a new phone for less than $10.
You can also install another rom.

The rom should not be the issue, as it was previously working (for more than 1 year) and otherwise would be a common problem, unless you're more specific...
Anyway in this moment everything is working good... but I expect that at some time I will have the same behaviour... that is phone not charging with any wall charger but charging through a computer.
If so, I will try then to make some other tests (I read somewhere to try to deactivate usb debug mode) and I'll report.

[Q] Did my device had sudden death?

Few days ago I left my tablet to go to some place and when I returned the device suddenly "died" - it will not start until I connected my brother's phone USB cable to charge it the next day. When I powered it up, it appeared that the battery suddenly dropped to 0%.
It happened again - I used it tonight, read some articles (had around 30%-60% charge), shut down the screen once, and when I tried to turn it on again, it happened again.
Did my phone suffer from sudden death or what? This is the same guy who tried to change the CSC from France to Singapore (so that's the modification I did so far, everything's the same, including stock unrooted Android 4.4.2).

There are many unknowns: charger, USB cable. or USB charging port. Nobody can give a specific answer except yourself .
This tool will help you to figure out which one is at fault. Step by step should be done : swap charger, USB cable, USB port until problem found
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...&_nkw=usb+current+and+voltage+tester&_sacat=0
Voltage should be 5-->5.2 Volts, current should be 1.5-->1.7 Amps for working charger, USB cable, and USB charging port.
Search Ebay for USB charging port for your model if you need one. I don't know which size of your tablet but most of them are not expensive, under $10 for USB flex FPCB.

[HELP] Charging problems

In a beautiful day, when I forget my charger at school, I used my PC to charge my cellphone ( just 2 days like that) and the cellphone was detecting like usual: If connected to pc it shows charging over USB, If connected to AC it shows AC. Ok then, so What is the problem? After One week, when I was travelling using the phone as usual the battey ended and cellphone turned off at 0% (perfectly normal), as soon as I was travelling I used car charger to charge my Zenfone (It is an 2A car adapter). When I connected the cellphone (I was on Stock ROM) it take more time to detect charger than usually (like when you connect it the phone instantly shows the battery icon when off) it takes over 20s connected to charger to show the battery logo, the phone was saying that 1/4 of battery has been charged (WTF it was totally discharged from 100% to 0% and when I put 20s it charge that much? This is not possible I tought). When I turn the phone on it was showing 30% OF BATTERY, I wondered how that could happen. (I alreay saw this bug on my friend's cellphones from other brands like Samsung & Motorola). Anyway, when I saw those 30% I saw the battery graph (wich shows if is on AC or USB) and it was showing charging over USB. BUT HOW THAT COULD BE USB, ITS A FRRAKING 2A CHARGER WTF ZENFONE. I tested on my sister's phone with same cable and same charger, it was showing charging over AC as well. When I finally get home I let it charging, after 1h30m it just charged 15% with Asus AC charger & at the battery graph still showing charging over USB, when I tried to connect it to computer the phone was showing charging over USB (btw it was ok because it was on PC) but windows doesn't said nothing was connected, no USB mismatch, NOTHING. I was on panic. WTF HAPPENED TO MY CELLPHONE. This day I decided to go to Marshmallow, soon as I have root and TWRP pre-installed (when I still have usb connection {3 months ago when I made root}) So I downloade RR zips, upgraded, everythig was ok, Marshmallow Running successfully. But one thing wasn't ok, the freaking charger detect. It was still saying "over USB" but it was on AC. Tried to go o bootloader, no answers from the phone either from windows. I bought an USB-OTG adapter, not working too. I bought an new microusb sub board, replaced it to the new one. No success, still saying charging over USB, no pc connection. Just one thing chaned: OTG before SubBoard change it doesn't even gave energy to "feed" the pen drive, mouse doesn't work too. This night was when I became freaking mad, I let it charging, when I turn the phone on it has just 25%. 6h Charging and 25%. I said to myself, this couldn't be possible, no way dude. I don't know what to do anymore, I'm desperate, is the only android phone that I have, already tried many chargers, many cables, many different computers, no clue of what happened with this cellphone. So is not an hardware issue (as soon I already had this issue, but it get back to normal by itself last time, I didn't do anything) but now it has been 1 month charging "over USB with short battery life. What am I suposed to do now? I tried repair battery life PRO, app from an XDA member. It says everything OK with battery, screenshot below: (translate: No problems founded). And another screnshot of the USB problem. As you guys can see my battery graph is sh*tty, never get to 100% in one day because of this issue.
@gadmei.tw @TecnoTailsPlays (New thread that I was saying).
Please anyone help me, I don't know what to do anymore . I always helped guys with other issues on RR and other rom's issues, now please I need you guys to help me.
Sorry for my bad english, I'm from Brazil and I'm nervous now.
Thanks XDA :crying:
I half read your story .I think your battery is miscalibrated. You need root and a app to calibrate it.
Say thanks if it helped.
