Hey guys. Got an aftermarket charger after my original gave up on day one and i didnt want to have to send everything back. When i plug the phone in the scren becomes un responise, but the hardware buttons stil work. Can anyone explain this? obviously i ned to try a diferant charger, specificaly for the galaxy but how can the charger stop the screen working? Many thanks.

Yes the same thing happened to me,,i took the charger back..and got a proper one
just for reference, the Black Berry 9600 chargers are compatible with SGS 9000
i bough one for car use
So are the moto chargers.
My car charger is an old razor v3 mini-usb with a mini-usb adapter.
My wall charger is an old Razor v9m charger.
Never tested a BB charger as i have always charged mine with the moto ones that were already plugged in
yup i also purchased a mini usb to micro usb adapter to use my old Moto chargers with my SGS
The same happened with me while using the stock charger in a train. The capacitive touch buttons and the screen stopped working, but the hardware buttons were working. So I plugged in my laptop and used a USB cable for charging it.
Never heard of this before....
I've not come across a charger that does not work.
The chatger works but the phone doesnt while its plugged in! my back button and menu button still work along with hardware buttons...... Weird... Allready ordered an official replacement

That will be the cable that has issues.
Pity you couldn't have tried another cable.
I am using a nokia car charger, also works fine. Blackberry didn't work for me
Yeah i know the cable causes the issue but does anyone know how? obviously other after market chargers are ok... Phone charges fine too, just cant use it when charging...

i'm using After market chargers too, but i have no problem
my car charger is using a BlackBerry 9500 charger (2A)
an in my PC i use a Motorola sync/charge USB mini + micro USB adapter to make it compatible with SGS 9000
they all work fine
i have not even unpacked my SGS usb cable that came in the box
Is any of this chargers really recognized as charger (charging with more than 500mA)?
You can easily verify this with the app "OSmonitor".
IF you see this: "USB Power: Online and at AC Power: Online" everything is working as it should. But if you see "AC power: Offline" your phone thinks the charger is a pc and it will only charge with 500mA.

The only problem with software informers here though is for those that have the problem and the screen locks up whilst being charged the software is of little use.
This question was not for people having a faulty charger but for the ones claiming that they have a functioning charger!
If the charger is not really recognized as charger it is useless for navigation. As the Galaxy S need more than the 500mA while navigating (with GPS).
yeah, minimum you need a 1A (1000mAh) charger
that's why i prefer the 2A chargers, it gives just enough juice to actually charge the battery, and use GPS+3G+WiFi+Bluetooth
else the car charger will not even be enough to power all those, and it will still consume the battery power.
that's from experience from my HTC phones

I bought a Sharper Image Retractable USB kit that has adapters for most of the USB sockets out there. But the Micro USB that came with the kit fails to work with the SGS, the retractable USB cable is set up like an extension cable which works fine as an extension cable but putting on the adapters dont work.
Last night I had a low battery. The screen was on and I hit the side power button to turn it off and nothing happened. The screen just stayed on. After several attempts to turn off the screen it turned off all together. I assumed the battery died. This morning I plugged it into my mini to micro adapter, which I have used before, and it still wouldnt do anything. No charging lights or anything. Tried three different mini USB cables and two different micro adapters. I get nothing on any of them. Are there supposed to be any lights on the phone while it's charging when the phone is off? I really doubt it's the chargers but I suppose it's possible. Does it sound like the phone is dead? Is there anything to check?
I would pull the battery out to force your phone to reset. Plug it in to the charger and and turn it on.
Tried removing the battery several times, still no luck. Today is the 31st day. If it's the phone, AT&T better replace it with a brand new one!
I held the battery from my fuze up against the Focus terminals and pressed the power button. It turned on. So apparently the battery is flat and not charging for some reason. Will try with the original charger when I get home.

You weren't using the original charger before? That's probably why you're having issues. I've had significant issues with it charging with any cable other than what came with it. No clue why.
Figured it out. I have 3 old HTC phone chargers (120v to mini usb) so I bought a bunch of the micro to mini adapters for $1 on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Motorola-Mini-U...230750?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item41546be29e
When I use the old charger with the adapter, it will not charge. It does on my gf's HTC Surround though so I will give the wall plugs to her. When I use the new EBAY adapters with a standard usb cable plugged into a computer it works fine. They also work fine plugged into the included 120v to USB adapter. I also bought a couple generic 2 port 120v to USB adapters, http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-Dual-PORT...694149?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2eb1df4185 ,
and they too work fine with a standard USB cable and the ebay adapters. It's really odd. I'm not sure what the difference is inside the 120v to mini vs. the 120v to standard USB but it was consistent amongst all of them.
I had my HD2 USB adapter at my bedside for charging my HD2. Instead of changing the adapter to the new Focus supplied one, I just plugged in the Focus to the HD2 one. In the morning my phone was dead. HD2 Adapter will NOT work, no matter what I try. I even tried my wife's iPhone adapter, and same thing. Went to the Focus Adapter, and all is good now. Strange...
Also, USB Cable to PC works fine.
PS: I read somewhere that the phone will not charge if it's turned off. Have not tested the theory, but maybe related.
I don't get the charging issue. I found out today that my phone wouldn't actually charge with a stand alone micro charger that came with one of my old BT headsets. Seems to work just fine with my car charger using the provided cable but it still makes no sense.
It's only 4 pins and a ground how the hell do you screw that up?

There are no lights anywhere to indicate that the phone is charging (other than the AMOLED screen). So, you have to check before the screen turns off. No LEDs to indicate a missed call or SMS, either - pretty annoying.
Another thing I noticed, when using the aftermarket wall-plug to USB adapter, even with the Samsung cable (USB to micro) allthough it does charge, the touch screen is very very sluggish. Takes several fast swipes just to get the phone to unlock. Can barely even type a word. This also occurs on my GF's HTC Surround. Weird indeed.

That makes it sound like a software issue since it's two different manufacturers.
Hey just wondering if I use a AC adapter to charge my Legend via USB, when its plugged in I can't unlock the phone, the screen seems to only recognise touch for about half a second, eg. I can swipe my finger to use the unlock bar but it only goes about half way to the right and the same thing for the mute button, it only goes about half way to the left.
Charging via USB connected to the computer works perfectly but it's just when I'm charging via AC adapter. Thought it was weird - might have something to do with the phone getting too much electricity through the AC?
AC charging works fo' me
It should work the same with or without charging.

In fact, one like that came with my Legend (as well as with my previous HTC phone). Did you guys get something different?
Hi I've got a problem with my phone. If I connect it to the PC using orginal USB cable it charging, transfering data and so. But if I connect the phone to the wall charger it don't charge only screen wake up but no charging on battery icon. The wall charger is orginal too. I've tried changing ROMs.
This problem is really anoying so if You can, please help me.
You write you use the original charger, but do you also use the original USB cable? It matters, cheap USB cables do not work on the Defy :-(
seems some problem in wall socket adaptor

Got to check that out, cause I've been wondering why I can charge my Defy+ in some wall chargers, some computers, and so far no car chargers. Would be great if the cables are the cause. Thanks
I use the orginal usb cable too

There's nothing wrong with your phone, ROM, or USB cable, but your wall charger is broken.
Just get your charger replaced. That's what warranties are for.
The Defy doesn't really care about USB cables. If it's switched off it will charge anyway, so the ROM doesn't matter either. But it's very picky about the current and voltage stability of the charger. That's why many 3rd party chargers don't work no matter what cable you plug into it.
I was in non-official phones service and they check charging on another adaptors but i think they were not original. Anyway as i remember when lastly phone was charging it was a storm and on the next day it wasn't working but i'm not sure.
I know this thread is old but i didn't find solution to this problem, soooo:
The answer is = turn off debugging over USB

What's debugging got to do with wall charger??
Doesn't matter from where I send it, what matters is written above
So why when I turn it on i have problems with charging?
Bug?
if u use External charger u must charge ur phone with mcgyver for 10 min.
after that use the External charger.
becaz ur battery so low.
Charging Issue
I got the same problem from the day i bought the mobile... The service center people told its charger issue and need to replace the charger. So Changed the wall charger under warranty. It took around 2 months to get my charger back. But the things are same. It sometime charge. Sometimes the screen will on and didnt charge. I tried changing different Versions. Same thing. Even the service center people have no idea about it....
Could you check if the micro-usb connector of the phone or that of the cable is clean, dirt and dust reduces or prevents transfer rate of electricity.
For the last couple months, when I plug my nexus in to charge, it intermittently stops and starts charging. It doesn't always do this but when it does you can tell because the screen will stay lit up with the "charging x%" label flashing under the clock. The screen stays lit and the charging label flashes because it is as if you are pulling the charge cable out and plugging it back in over and over again.
I think I read about this issue a few times awhile ago but I can't find any mentions of it now. I know it happens with the orb charger sometimes but I just use the stock LG charger and cable.
Does anyone have any idea if it would be my phone, the charger, or the usb cable?
I sort of thought maybe after plugging it in so many times (since I got it basically right after it launched) maybe the usb mini charging port got worn down so it has enough play that the charge wire can't always get a grip on it leading to the intermittent charging connection. My charging cable hasn't ever been bent around much so I don't think it would have been damaged.
I am running the latest official CM nightly with faux's kernel. This problem has happened at least twice when I was running it completely stock as well as each time I tried several other kernels. Formatting and restoring never helped either. So I doubt it is a software issue.
Usually when this happens, I think it also winds up switching to usb charging mode because charging is unusually slow. I'd say 90% of the time though if charges without this intermittent issue and in AC charging mode very quickly.
What happens when you connect your phone to your PC? Does it work, or does it connect and disconnect continually? Does it charge fluently?

On a PC it's a completely solid connection. It has always charged solidly from a computer.

I have tried one other charger and wire a few months ago but I only used it for about 10 minutes. I'll try it again today and charge it overnight for a better test. It didn't have the same issues but the plug was definitely tighter to plug in. Could the lg charger's cable have worn down or is it just not made to fit a tightly? The LG wire does wiggle a tiny bit while the new charger wire doesn't move at all. Does your LG usb cable have a bit of play?

Mine doesn't wiggle, but that wouldn't be the problem. If it's charging fluently while connected to the pc, then the adaptor itself might be the problem.

Can you RMA a charger with google? I think you're right. Right before the problem starts, the charger starts making faint intermittent buzzing noises. It's not an unusual buzz, it's that normal sound that you often hear with chargers and other devices. The thing that's weird is that it is intermittent instead of a steady sound. I'll see if I can get it replaced.
