[Q] Touch screen goes crazy when charging? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I plug in my charger, my touch screen starts going bonkers, but unplugged it performs perfectly fine. I have turned on pointer locations to see what is going on. The touch screen fails to register touches and also fails to keep track of my finger. For instance, if I quickly swipe my finger up and down repeatedly, it will only track my finger for a very short amount of time, and sometimes fails to follow my finger at all. Unplugged, it continuously tracks my finger. Has anyone had a similar problem?
I have tested multiple chargers using my computer and a wall outlet. The problem always persists.

That's a problem on just about any smartphone. It's something to do with the voltage supplied

I have the same problem, except that the screen registers more touches and my device is a Micromax A75.

I had the same problem with my one x. It was because I was using a different charger. Ensure you are using the stock charger and if the problem persists, try a different micro usb lead!

I have tried three different chargers, same thing happens with each of them.

Slow down while charging

I haven't seen anyone else post this issue, but I have 2 vibrant's. One completely stock, the other rooted with ZA lag fix.but when either one is on the charger (or charging via pc/mac) the phone is very slow and choppy. Does anyone else have this issue?

I have seen this issue but only with non oem samsung vibrant chargers/usb cables. I have one that makes my phone completely unusable and another that makes the phone respond on its own.
The charger that I use every night is the one that came in the box.

Same
I have this exact issue on a stock vibrant i got this morning. I was surprised that this was the only place i saw this mentioned; which lead me to register at the forums.
The touchscreen becomes less accurate i think; when flipping through app pages it will often open an app accidentally if the charger is plugged into the wall. havent tried from a computer or car yet.
It not bad enough of an issue for me to return it but it is a bummer. If anyone finds a work around i would be interested.
This happens to me with the stock wall charger too but only when I have it connected to a source converter, more specifically a vehicle outlet power source adapter: Duracell 175 Watt DC to AC Pocket Power Source Inverter.
I didn't try and see if I only connected via USB to that device if it still was the same. But I do know it is with wall charger to the outlet on that particular device.
Now other than that device, I have not experienced this issue or the few times it was plugged into my computer.
But I do know it is annoying when the problem occurs, even though it is easy to disconnect and then use real fast or do what you need to do and then reconnect, it is still an extra task that has to be done.

[ODD] Touch screen stops working with generic charger

Ok, so I get to work and decide to plug in my phone from an old charger from another phone. I plug it in and all of a sudden, my touchscreen is WAY OFF. I hit the icons near the top and my middle icons light up.
I thought it was the phone, tried different settings, then ended up plugging in the native USB charger/cable....and all is fine.
Just in case any else runs into this issue, try the original charger.
Same thing happened to me on ny Captivate with a generic charger I purchased on Amazon.

That is a problem with the charger hitting a sensitive spot in the usb bus, this happened a lot with the hero as well when using an aftermarket charger. I messes up touch input and makes the phone unresponsive to touch altogether sometimes
Oh yeah, common issue - bad grounding I always suspected.
I've had the exact same issue. I've been using the generic charger that I used for my Pre, and the touchscreen goes crazy when it's plugged in.
It's kinda like an extra puzzle in the morning. Have to remember to unplug the phone before I can disable the alarm clock.
Here I thought I found something new....
Ah well...thanks guys/gals

[Q] Swype-ing while charging...does not process right...

I've looked everywhere. i promise i tried to search it first before asking here.
----
Every time my phone is plugged in, wall or computer...swype doesn't seem to process finger swyping correctly.
anyone know why this happens and how to possibly fix this?
Are you using a third party charger? If it's not sending out the right amount of electricity it could be interfering with the touch screen (which is conductive).
I've noticed this behavior sporadically as well, with both OEM and third party charging solutions, but never when charging via USB plugged into a computer, only from the wall.
I can only speculate, but perhaps I've got relatively "dirty" (unsteady) power in my apartment wall outlets, and it's resulting in voltages outside this device's tolerances.
I've noted only the touchscreen appears to become unresponsive, this doesn't seem to have any effect on the ability for the battery to charge up.
I have this issue too when charging off my inverter in my truck. I had this on my mytouch as well. I just figured it was from the unstable line voltage. I haven't noticed any other affects from it other than that.
Agree with the others. Bad charger.
I've been experiencing this issue with many different chargers.
I've tried wall and car chargers with dedicated cables and also the car and wall chargers which give you a usb port to plug into, with 2 different data cables.
Even though the issue occurs with different chargers, it bothers me the most when it's plugged into my computer. Having it plugged into my laptop is a lot more convenient for me charging-wise.
I have no problem with any other application. I play Angry birds and homerun battle 3d with zero issues in touch screen response.
master reset of the phone doesn't help. I honestly think it's possibly an issue with swype.
I notice I need to press the screen harder when plugged into the wall for swype to input correctly. The problem is the screen not swype. You just don't notice it with other apps because of the need for less precision.

It's not that. You know when your texting, the swype "trail" is smooth, when it's plugged in, the lines get jagged and the phone picks that up instead of my original input and trys to guess the word off of the jagged line.
This happens to my phone and I always assumed it was heat related. This does not happen to me with the original samsung charger but on my cheap ebay wall and vehicle charger it does. Samsung charger is .7 amps and the others are 1 amp.

battery constantly disconnected when charging

I have this problem with my note, the screen keeps saying 'battery disconnected' when charging. After a while it continues to charge, and then it says that again, every 3-4 minutes.
When the charger is disconnected, the phone works fine.
I'm very sure there are no loose connections, as I opened it and pushed everything in place and it fits nicely.
Is it an android issue?
Clean the usb socket on the phone. I used a toothbrush and it fixed the problem for me.

I've found that the USB micro cables I've been using have been "wearing" out... Replace with a new one and try again...

Strange touchscreen issues when plugged into a computer

I don't know if anyone else is experiencing this, but I've discovered when my Nexus 4 is plugged into my laptop (a Macbook Pro), the touchscreen kind of acts a little wonky. Occasionally it won't completely pickup my drag (like when I'm unlocking the phone) or swiping between homescreens. Has anyone else had this problem? When the phone isn't plugged into a computer it runs just fine.
just tried it. My phone is running smooth, even when i plug it in to my computer. are you running custom Rom?
Its stock ROM and kernel. I'm running 4.2.2 but I believe it was also an issue in 4.1.2. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something I should RMA over.
Have you tried to use a different cable? I have experience the same problem and was able to fox it using a different cable or a different USB port.

That's good advice, thanks! The cable I'm using is not the one that came with the phone, and could be suspect. I'll give it a shot.

That's probably what it is. My old Motorola droid cable used to do this to touchscreens.

Note: As per my observations, the touch threshold changes when charger is detected. This affects the touch sensitivity.

My girlfriend bought a cheap charger from eBay and it caused her screen to go haywire. It started pressing random things. I plugged it in my Samsung Galaxy i9000 and the touchscreen simply froze, you couldn't actually press anything.
You'd be surprised how dirty current can damage/affect the running of an electronic device. New cable and/or different port me thinks
Same problem here
Hey, TrevSo, I have just noticed exactly the same issue with my Nexus 4. I connect it to one of my laptops and the screen goes all wonky ... poor sensitivity, phantom taps ... very strange.
I have tried several different cables and tried it on two different computers and three different chargers.
any cable with any one of my chargers (included one, some Kodak charge and an HTC charger) - OK
any cable with ThinkPad W520 - OK
any cable with Thinkpad T60 (any of the three USB ports) - BAD
Maybe a grounding or insufficient power issue?
EDIT: definitely a power and/or grounding issue: my T60 came with a cheapo aftermarket power adapter. When the power adapter is plugged in, the phone's screen freaks out. Unplug the laptop to run it on battery power and, voila, phone screen is fine. I looked it up and the official Lenovo adapter is grounded.
I have experienced the same thing using the stock cable from my Galaxy Nexus connected to my ThinkPad X60 laptop. Swipe gesture typing will cut off my swipes mid-word and the double finger swipe gesture to bring down the quick settings menu will lead to unintentional taps of things on the screen.
Same thing happens when phone is connected to an Asus netbook using the stock Nexus 7 cable.
4.2.2 didn't fix the problem.
Hey everyone, thanks for all of the feedback/ideas. As others have surmised, it appears to be a charger/cord problem. I ran a couple tests and it really seems like when it's hooked to my laptop (while plugged in) using a non-OEM wire the touchscreen acts really strangely. When hooked to my desktop, things seem to work just fine. I'm no expert in these things so I can't really make a conclusion based on those facts, but I hope this information helps other people.
Yeah, like I said, definitely a power source issue. I guess some laptops don't deliver quite the correct voltage to the USB ports or something.
