Hello everyone,
I'll be getting galaxy tab 10.1 soon, but I have a question.
I personally love Touchwiz from Samsung, and they have become much better from the past.
I don't think android will be as feature full without Touchwiz, especially with the toggles, bottom dock bar, nicer UI, tweaked browser, etc.
Even though I didn't have galaxy tab 10.1 before, I know all these because I used to have Acer iconia a500, and there was a touchwiz rom from the galaxy tab ported to acer iconia. I liked it a lot, but the battery drained super fast for some reason.
Anyway, the developer for that rom for Iconia started from Android 3.1 and even though the galaxy tab 10.1 didn't get 3.2 update, where Iconia got it, he could make the touchwiz rom from galaxy to be based on 3.2 for Iconia. I hope you know what I mean..
So since there are quite a few jelly bean roms available for galaxy tab 10.1, is there a jelly bean rom that has the touchwiz overlay?
I hope there is or will be.
Thank you!
No. Only official 4.0.4.

Stupid idea from a noob:
- make a titanium backup from all apps of the tab 2 (which already has JB)
- flash CM10 or similar to the Tab 10.1
- restore apps of tab 2 to the Tab 10.1 with titanium backup
In case of any real chance to work, I'm willing to try this.

4.1.2 apps (like stuff you would get from the play store) that work on tab 2 jellybean will likely work on the original tab 10.1 running cm10...but the op is talking about wanting touchwiz jb. Touchwiz isn't an app, it's Samsung UI framework. It is not a good idea to flash an incompatible framework package onto a rom that wasn't designed for it.
The closest I have gotten to jelly bean smoothness on stock ICS is by using Pimp my Rom tweaks. No lie it runs way smoother than usual.
Something like this?

I don't know if that rom will have it soon but right now, it doesn't have tw style setting, miniapps, tw notifixation tray, and tw launcher, right? Correct me if I'm wrong..
Those are the reasons I want a jelly bean based touchwiz rom and not a cm10.
Thanks,

Well, if you want to attempt to port the JB Rom from the GT 2 10.1 to the OG 10.1, you're welcomed to try it out.

On my unrooted, stock Honeycomb Galaxy Tab I have a different wallpaper for my lock screen than I do for the launcher. I notice that on my Galaxy Nexus, which is the "pure" Android experience, which runs ICS 4.0.2 that this capability has been taken away.
Is this because the GN is a phone? Or has that capability just been yanked from ICS?
I dont know if it was a feature on stock unmodified Honeycomb and if it wasnt then it could be something that Samsung added as part of their touchwiz mods.
Hi all. As you might have heard the official Samsung ICS update for our beautiful Note has started rolling out in Europe today. I'm just wondering whether people will be using it or whether they are happy with their custom ICS roms. What are the pros and cons of each?
I'm still on imilka's Cm9 v2, as it works flawlessly on my Note. But I should update soon and want to know what people more experienced than me think (I've only been playing around with flashing for a couple of months)
Thanks

I m going with Official ICS as I feel that our phone is incomplete without Touchwiz apps like S-Pen, S-memo, etc.
The day I will lose my Stylus, I will jump straight away to CM9. LOL.
CM9 is purely for better performance whereas Samsung ICS is for better user-experience.
I stay with TouchWiz Apps but other Launcher.
I think Nova Launcher is the best Launcher, those Folders and Docks are awesome !
Cyanogen definitely as I don't want this crappy Touchwizz on my Note.

Official ICS.
I tried a few AOSP roms, but can't live without proper stylus support. I've gotten too used to it.

Why should I have a heavier ROM with useless things when I can have a light ROM smooth and fast and everything I need
How much of a performance difference is there between official ICS with 3rd party launcher and a custom rom? Would you feel this in everyday use?

I'm sure even without Touchwiz, there will be awesome developers porting Samsung apps over in future. Currently, you can choose both of them to your preference. If you usually take notes and enjoying Sammy's apps then by all means use the stock ICS ROM.
After using imilkas ICS/CM9 and then going back to GB I realised how much lag there was on the note and stock roms... so I guess my question would be...is it as seamless, performance wise, as CM9? (In terms of basic features and performance like swioing between pages and launching apps and transitions ?)

I'm on CM9 but would like to try the Stock ICS, but that's more because of a compulsive flashing disease I must have. Well in fact I would like to have FM radio app, so that's my excuse for flashing the official ROM. I can always install another launcher like nova and still use Samsung apps anyway ? I mean touchwizz is not just a launcher right, it's a whole framework that's "there" even if i use another launcher ?

Thanks for the answer. As I read TW won't work well in tablet mode, I guess even if i use a apex launcher for example, I won't be able to get a working tablet mode with official ICS + apex launcher ?
I think I'll give the official ICS a try before giving my final judgement .

Under GB I tried stock ROM and custom ROMs, the difference between these two kind of ROMs was noticeable.
And I like things clean, so I don't want useles things on my phone.
All ROMs I use are also cleaned by myself using System Tuner Pro and removing all applications I don't use (like Email for example, I only use Gmail, wallpapers, animated wallpapers etc.)
And AFAIK with stock ROM I cannot remove Samsung's crap so CM9 is my best friend.
With OpenDESIGN coming in the next few hours, you'll never say that you miss S-Memo and pen gestures anymore
I've come straight from CM9 and despite the annoyance of Samsung's bloatware I feel that ICS is a lot smoother on the official ROM. The only thing I would like to know is if there is a way to get the stock ICS keyboard. The ones in the Play Store seem to been twatted about with and don't seem to offer the proper ICS autocorrect infrastructure unless I'm mistaken.
So i just bought a Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with ICS 4.0.3. After a few days i have to say that the experience is terrifying and using the tab now feels like torture. The UI is so massively stuttering and laggy that my eyes are hurting after 10 minutes. Be it web-browsing with all kind of browsers or using facebook or just searching through the menus,... and the worst stutter is in Play Store.
I know that JB is supposed bring the smoothness to a near iDevices-level. I used a JB Transformer Prime before. It is super smooth and is worlds apart from an ICS Transformer Prime. But the Prime has Tegra 3 while the Galaxy Tab 2 has only Tegra 2. The experience with the tab 2 was so horrible that I'm afraid that even JB won't be able to save it.
I was about to return the tab so i don't really want to install an (incomplete) custom JB on it and then have to restore it to stock state. Because as i said, i fear JB is not enough. So anyone who has installed JB on the tab 2 please share your experience with me? If JB is really that great i may give it a try anyway.
Thank you very much!
Even the update from 4.0.3 to 4.0.4 was a big improvement IMO for the stock software. I haven't tested out the JB OTA leak, but I do know that AOSP/CM10 Jelly Bean works really well on my 7" tablet.
With aokp,lag dessaperaed
@moliverac8 follow me and i follow back
I just upgraded to 4.0.4. It is indeed a minor improvement over 4.0.3 although not as much as I hoped. The UI is still very stuttering and spiky. Sometimes even unresponsive. I guess I will just have to return it. Sadly I like most of Samsung product. But I will have to go for a transformer prime or infinity.
Did you turn off power saving?

Running cm or aokp makes a huge difference. Its the fastest it will ever be with it. With stock its clearly the slowest it will ever be. Some roms that are based on stock but trimmed down are fast. Check around and do some research.
Remember, you can always go back if you don't like it.

The galaxy tab 2 is not a tegra device. It uses a TI OMAP processor which is completely open rather than a closed and proprietary nvidia tegra. That's where there are already jellybean roms out for it if you want to flash them.

I have the 7" tab and with 4.0.3 I had the same experience as OP, but JB leak cured that.
I tried CM10 first, very smooth, but the lack of WiFi direct, Polaris office and video codecs were a deal breaker for me.
I suggest trying a JB rom before returning the tab.
AOKP Build 4 is like butter
iv found the JB leak to not be that smooth on my tab 2 The app store scrolling is slow and so is going from home page to home page...is something wrong? Iv got the Tab 2 3g 10.1??
Experience is nothing like the Note 2 which is amazing! (so good iv not even gone for a custom rom) I know that has the quad core but surely shouldnt be this bad...

If you really have the situation you described, and you have turned off the power saving mode, then the difference between stock and JB variants won't be noticeable because you have some other issues that are degrading the normal performance.
This tablet performs quite well under normal circumstances with the stock ICS. It has plenty of memory and an adequate processor. SO there are a few possible answer for your problem.
1. You might have failed hardware.
2. You might be loading the device with so many active widgets and background programs that you are eating all the RAM up. That's hard to do, but possible especially if you have some poorly written , misbehaving apps..
3. You have some badly behaving apps that are eating memory and cpu.
4. Do not use auto task killers with ICS, these will fight Android's built-in system optimization and slow your apps down. You can use the manual task manager to kill a misbehaving app if needed.
First open the task manager and see what you have.
When I open it, normally I have about 450Mb used out of 830Mb it displays 450 / 830 and you will see a few active apps. CPU numbers for the active apps should be very low. Mine usually shows 0.0 or 0.X so very low. If you have a app with a high CPU number, that could be your problem.
As you open more app, more memory is used., but that's ok, Android does not remove apps from memory until it needs to.
If you have more than 80% of memory used, things can begin to slow down. That should not happen unless you are running several poorly written apps that are going rouge and eating memory. What does your task manager show?
So-called debloating, removing some unused apps from the ROM is a placebo. If you don't run them, they are sitting in SSD storage doing nothing and have no effect on speed or RAM.
Samsungs Touchwiz additions to the UI have a pretty small footprint and don't impact responsiveness as far as I can measure.
Once we get a fully working kernel, there are some inherent UI speed ups in JB, and those will come in the stock ROMs as well, but that won't fix the situation you have which is an anomaly.
You can monitor applications , memory and CPU usage with a app such as System Tuner
I posted a screenshot.
For me, the stock 4.0.3 was terrible! Even considered returning the tablet due to lag. But flashed AOKP 4.1.1 and feels like a brand new machine. Very smooth and no lags whatsoever!
Hi everyone glad to find this post..!
Ok yo begin with I bought a tab2 10.1 GTP5113 ver. With ICS 4.0.3 ..!
I haven't unlocked or rooted ..! It was smooth everything was nice except if I had many apps opened then it was laggy
I was able to add the incremental update named UEBLH firmware..!!
Then I installed the leaked jellybean firmware on it..! Still everything working fine..!
Its much more smoother and sexier in handling... The UI is beautiful and operation is verryyy smooth ..!
But to my surprise the IR blaster (smart remote control) isn't working anymore and the camera is crappy..! It's garbage..!! It doesn't autofocus anymore..!
I wanted to ask someone has same issues..? And was the camera crappy in previous versions as well. ?

I don't think the cameras ever auto-focused on the Tab 2's. I know the rear camera on my p3113 doesn't and Face Unlock stopped working for me which was ok because I had to hold my face in a certain spot for it to work anyway since the front camera couldn't change focus.
Back on topic though, I'm running my build of Paranoid Android and it's slicker than a greased pig. It is 4.1.2, but it is way snappier than CM9 was on the p3113.
So as we know the Galaxy Tab is a dual core tablet (obviously) that runs on a Tegra 2 processor.
I was looking through Sammobile today and I came across this article:
http://www.sammobile.com/2013/03/25...android-4-2-2-testing-on-1st-gen-galaxy-tabs/
Apparently Samsung ARE still developing/testing on this tablet (as well as the other originals) and are testing Jelly Bean builds...
Apparently also if the test firmware passes the tests and so on and a Jelly Bean rom is all goods, then this will be upgraded to... 4.2.2.
Right now apparently testing is being done on the 7.7 variant, but surely they'd also test on our 10.1 Tabs (it states P7500 right now, but the P7510 should follow suit if that's the case)
EDIT: The 7.7 is already getting Jelly Bean
(Of course right now this is all up in the air and is subject to change, but we can be hopeful)
What do you guys think?

Yeah, but look at how the ICS update was. They skinned it to basically look like honeycomb. Even if we do get an update, they will make it look the same.
If you truly want a decent update, try AOKP. Sure it involves rooting and flashing it, but it is 4.2.2 and it's way more customizable than touchwiz. And you can over clock the cpu if you need more power

Actually I disagree. Look what happened with the S2 and the Note. They still looked like Gingerbread even on ICS, for heaven's sake. But their Jelly Bean update looks like a proper update. Maybe if we did get the same update we'd get a similar thing (provided though the Tab's ICS build is already halfway there-ish).
And haha, I only just got this tablet. And for me stock ICS runs pretty damn well. So maybe I'll stick to this for now... With my tablet I'm not too fussed (unlike my phone...) as is :3

One thing that you forget is the CPU. The 7.7 tab runs an Exynos, and the P7500 runs a Tegra 2, that makes a big difference in development.

I looked into this before rooting/flashing Task650's OAKP 4.2 ROM. From what I was able to gather, there was essentially a low chance of updating to Jelly Bean officially.
I highly recommend that you try out his ROM, and if you don't like it, you can always restore to the Nandroid backup you made first.

+1 on this. I tried the tabletUI (Interface -> Status Bar -> TabletUI or something like that..) and found it quite nice.
However, I found kasper_h (, AAccount) 's ROM MacKay Omni KK ROM to be super useful since I don't have to sacrifice the navigation bar real estate.
Of course, I don't mind having to swipe down from the top/bottom to reveal both the status bar (NO TabletUI mind you.. ) and navi bar. This is so much better on my tab now. Kind of like a second life.
First I'm sorry if my english is bad. I will do my best to be understandable.
Back in the day with my SGS2 I tried many many rom and in the end the best I found was a stock rom debloated but aosp themed.
I had all the feature like mhl working and I was able to reinstall any samsung app I wanted. And all that without the horrible (for my taste) samsung call screen/sms screen/system setting screen and icon notification.
I tried to find something similar with the SGS4 but I can't find one matching my criteria. I only found CGM based rom or debloated rom. Do I need to wait or is there something like that already out there? Or just a team that work on something like that I can follow for future release?
Have a good day!

i was thinking the same thing especially since theyre both quad core, but in the end having the faster of the two processors, the 1080p screen and the ir blaster is well worth the trade off (my opinion). Keep your head up we are going to have a uber amount of ROMs in the near future
