Your Best Speed Test Scores - EVO Shift 4G General

Well this is kind of an experiment for me, because I do it on all the ROMs I try. I'm just interested to see what everybody else is getting on different ROMs. I was in a WiMax area today and decided to run a couple. Include your ROM and radio (3G, Wimax, LTE, etc) Any phone, any carrier. Just curious. Let's see those scores. This is newSENSE on Wimax 4G.

it worked one time they gave me a phone and 10% off the regular plan price along with the discount i get for work. ( i haven't worked at that employer in years though lol)

This is on 3g in my home town.
Edit: I'm useing Stock Modded at the moment...

Not bad at all, are you using any network tweaks or is that stock kicking some butt?

It's just stock with no tweeks. I don't know why its so good. In Lexington, ky its terrible....

The bottom 2 scores are in Campbellsville, the next 2 are 3g in Lexington, the next 2 are 3g in Cincinnati and the top one is 4g (wimax) in Cincinnati. Kentucky.

Those are almost all higher than I usually get during the day. I think my highest is .35 mbps. Maybe it will get better when I move in a week and a half, I get worse signal there but it is a lot smaller community so speeds may be better.

Anyone getting subpar 4G service (Philadelphia)

my 4g signal is coming in pretty weak and the speeds i am getting are fairly slow. when doing a speed test with the evo and my old g1 my results are:
Evo 2,700kbps on 4g
G1 3,800kbps on HSPA+
I know HSPA+ is fast but i would would expect the 4g to be a bit faster, when i use my clearwire usb stick on my laptop i can pull speeds upto 17mbps. I even tried it in different areas around the city with no change. I know its still an emerging technology but i would like to see if anyone else in a 4g are has had this issue. any thoughts?
Ive given up on 4g and Im completely happy on 3g with this phone, saves battery too.
Ive gotten 4g signal ONCE and ive had the phone for a week, in a 4G market. Still love the phone just not buyin the 4g hype. I dont even call it evo 4g anymore, its just...Evo
edit::: in Hawaii (oahu) btw
I hear ya, 4g seems more of a novelty at this point. I love the phone but im tempted to return it and stick with tmobile for now.

Im right over the bridge in NJ and getting 2mb. isnt it capped anyway? its fast enough for me.
I'm around the philly area, and when I do get a 4th signal it will go from 2mbps to 5mbps
I'm near the Baltimore area and so for the most signal I have gotten was one bar and I hit 3500kbps but on average just the 4g icon is lit and I get about 2000kbps. Also when testing you should tether to a laptop because doing the test from the phone isnt very accurate.
I work in King of Prussia, PA and my 4g signal for the past two weeks has been anywhere from 2 to 3.5 mbps. Inside buildings it is worse. Just remember that when 3g first came out it wasn't as good as it is today. It just takes time for a new technology to become a great technology.
Im getting like 2mbps here in new jersey too...

I'm thinking the same thing. Did you port your number?, what happens if you did and you decide to go back?

I read somewhere earlier that Sprint was having a problem with the 4g network, a sprint rep told a guy over the phone (yes the are not always right, but in this case it seems to be something going on). Everyone around the US seems to be reporting similar problems with the 4g network.
I'm in Seattle, and when I do get 4G, it's about 1800kbps. In comparison, mt T-Mobile 3.5G on my N900 got about 3800kbps. So far, I'm very unimpressed. Might be taking this thing back if it doesn't get any better.
That being said, the 3G service seems to be very fast and responsive even though I'm only getting about 1000kbps.
as jus10 mentioned, sprints 4g is getting hit extremely hard. they were expecting it and that is why they have not crashed but theres only sooo much bandwidth. so with everyone saying 4g is bad right now, just use wifi for now haha.
we are basically beta testers for 4g. it has never been used in this large of scale. but anyways it will def. get better and better but hey anything faster than 3g is good.
im hoping it gets better cause it saddens me that tmobile hspa+ is faster. as i stated i can can pull 17mbps down on my clear usb 4g stick which makes me think they might need to push out an update for the evo.
I didnt port my number yet cause i wanted to try out sprints network before i commited lol.
also the 4g isnt capped on the down side, only on the up.
What are you guys speed testing with. Also you'll probably see 4g has big advantages on latency and upload speed. Doesn't matter how big the pipe(bandwidth) if the pump (latency) is too slow. Latency will make a big difference in voip and video conferencing. I suggest doing some video streaming comparisons vs. Pure bandwidth tests.

When did you hit 17Mbps & is it easily repeatable? I'd just test both back to back in the same area to pin point the problem. Sprint could have the HTC Evo at a lower priority on the network over the data sticks and hotspots.
I can hit 17mbps at my friends house which is about 3 miles from me. tried the evo there and still only getting about 3mbps.
Did a quick test today, 250KBps (2Mbps) down. Thats outside, cuz inside I dont get signal at all... and I thought that Portland, being the most mature city for 4G, would be at least better than that... as someone said above, I also given up on 4G. Tether 3G through USB and I get 140KBps to 200KBps down on my laptop, which is more that enough for emergencies. Otherwise I just use wifi in my house & office. Can't beat 22Mbps comcast connecton
That being said, atm Evo "4G" is just a marketing term, nothing more.
here in Vegas,
This is at my house in whats considered a spotty 4g area. I have noticed over the past couple days the 4G service keeps getting faster. On the first night i was only able to get 2.3 Mbps down.
portland oregon
3g 1.78mb/s down at best
4g 2.89mb/s down at best with full bars
Any PHILADELPHIA updates from EVO owners living in the Philly area? (S, Jersey, Philly burbs, etc)
I am curious about 4G availability, reliability, and speeds.
Thank you.

How Does Sprint Roll Out 4G?

How does Sprint go about choosing cities for 4G? Also, when will most smaller "cities" finally have 4G? A year from now? Sooner, later? Does Sprint have any publication outlining their plans? I live Columbia, SC, and right now speeds are slllowwww on 3G. So when is YOUR city getting 4G? We've all been payin for it!
good luck finding that information out. I tried to contact sprint about those exact things and got the same bs over and over and over and over (yes four times )
Slowly
I live in Greenville and someone that works for Clearwire said they have one tower in the area but that's it so far. I'm not getting my hopes up for a full rollout any time soon and after getting to use 4G recently, I don't really care anymore either. T-Mobile's 3G is faster than what I've personally seen from Sprint's 4G, my wife and I are switching this summer when our ETF drops to $50/line.
I know. They pick a random city and provide customers with very spotty coverage that barely penetrates walls
You need to carry around a ghost buster battery pack to fully utilize 4G constantly any how. The only time I use 4G is when I'm plugged into a power source or to watch one video if needed. Almost useless pretty much, I'm in a 4G area and I'm using a rom without 4G and I'm just fine.

you know...if you didnt have to toggle the radio, it would be alot better. i agree with you tmobile is kicking some ass and taking names...however our saving grace for me and us is the anymobile anytime stuff. If tmob got that going id etf it...I like sprint and my 22% discount but i could pay the same on tmobile for the 3 lines I have (since I dont have to pay a 10.00 fee per line) and I could get liek the dell streak or some other snazzy gsm phone. Really cdma I personally think is a dying technology.

I highly doubt this is the case. There are many examples where their roll out does not follow suit
I have to agree with elegantai, that seems like the most likely answer. I'm definitely not complaining though, they just turned it on here within the last week.
I've been wondering how they decide their rollouts. I have a feeling that the commercial is spot on
But anyway, I can't wait to try some day to day use here at KU. Been to KC a couple times and was blown away by how fast it was. 4G is supposed be activated here in a month or two, so stoked.

Stock roms do not show 1x. So you could just have poor signal. Where in the bay area? In southbay I am having no problems.

thats my point, when i go to stock rom i have 3g, but when i flast custom rom like cyanogenmod i always get 1x for 3g. idk y.
I constantly get 1x in Phoenix using CM7, it is quite annoying.
i never got my cm7 to say 3g always 1x
AOSP and Sense show different signal strengths. Did you guys run a speed test when on Sense? And is it any different?
Honestly I think it's a problem with AOSP rooms like CM and UD. When I've used those I would constantly get 1x connection. I was in a 3G area being that the other phones on my plan would have 4G and 3G and the internet would be quicker. It's a problem with the ROM itself I think.
Edit**
I just found this in Q&A
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=898882
Like stated earlier, sense Roms will say 3g but it may really be 1x because sense Rom do not show true signal strength! Aosp does which is why you are seeing 1x with cm7

Yup, but not all sense roms, the incredible 2 shows 1x and 3G so is some sense roms, I'm on 3G at home and I just run some speed test and my download speed is 0.21 mbps and 0.15 upload so is really bad for 3G and I thought it might be my phone but I tried my wife's too (Epic stock) and she gets same result, I ma start going out of town soon, so I think I ma have to cancel Sprint, I wanted the nexus s but T-Mobile sucks too, att don't really like it, so I guess I ma go back with Verizon which is where I came, just don't one the thunderbolt cause all specs rather I wait for the galaxy s 2(I doubt it cause I hate Samsung ) or go back to iPhone in Verizon I don't want to but that's probably my last choice

For the last TWO AND A HALF MONTHS Ive been *****ing at Sprint for this same reason of slow 3G speeds. When I got my EVO in December, I didnt have any issue pulling in decent 3G speeds at my house in San Francisco (I live in Mission District, and speeds were 900-1100kbps). I currently get between 50kbps to a max 300kbps. Sprint says this is fine for 3G and I say its not.
If you go to Downtown San Jose near "Almaden and Santa Clara" at times the speed will be 1100kbps-2200kbps, but even recently the speed has dropped down.
4G - forget it, it basically doesnt exist where the coverage maps claim. Sprint or Clearwire or BOTH are lying on that one. Where it does work, its slower than 3G in the areas I mentioned above.
Ive gone back and forth with test after test on my phone, reset after reset, visits to the store repair centers everything. Its got to the point Ive filed with the FCC and BBB and still no response from EITHER!
Im now looking at eating the ETF and going to small claims to recoup the fees and a MINIMUM of 3 months of the "highest priced data plan" Sprint offers due to them not being able to deliver what we both contractually agreed to deliver, yet I am forced to continue to pay for. They made out with the better end of the bargain, and that isnt what a contract is about.
So where are you in the Bay Area? Id love to get a hold of you and find out more about your debug settings so I can notify Sprint this isnt just a ME issue, its a network issue.

Not yet here either. I just tested to find out. 7.5Mbps down and it was at 1.2Mbps up for a few seconds, so I got excited, then leveled off around 0.98Mbps after that and finished reporting 1.0 on the head.
Just went to lunch and ran three tests around the Downtown Denver area.
Speeds spiked to a futuristic 1.02 but averaged no better than .97

Currently on Midnight 5.2 w/ Honeycomb Fusion theme. Didn't want to flash again until official GB drops...
That's still slow by comparison to other carriers...COME ON SPRINT!!! =/
I've barely got 3G right now and the signal has dropped way down. Either the tower here has chronic issues or they're up to something...I hope.
It's quite depressing. I have a friend with the Thunderbolt and my DL speeds regularly best his in areas with a strong signal here in Denver (of course he gets much better coverage) but his upload speeds average a minimum 3x faster. He went with me at lunch and where I was DLing at 6.5-7 he was getting 3-3.5, but upstream he gets the same speeds as downstream!
Sprint's going to eventually start losing customers if they don't do something about this poor data performance. Oh, how the mighty have fallen =/ Formerly the fastest network.

I sit under a WiMax tower.
I just got 1.49 and our tower is 2 streets over. 7 mbs dl on that same test.
So, it happened a week later than it was supposed to. I only hope it spells the end of the flaky behavior that almost made me believe I was having software or hardware issues on my phone.
And unfortunately, no improvement to ping, although I didn't expect any...
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1345636745.png This is My Home internet, 2nd test on home internet right after the 1st one MAJOR DIFFERENCEhttp://www.speedtest.net/result/1345660172.png
1st attachment my phone using WiFi
2nd Attachment 4G
3rd Attachment 3G
Now mind you guys my home internet is Clear Wireless, which sprint pays clear to use their 4G. Sprints 4G is Clear's 4G basically.
My 4G gets better speeds then WiFi lol should be other way around and i only had 1 bar of 4G during that test. And my 3G and 4G were in the same spot. 3G should have more bars i only had 1 bar for 3G. because 3G came out first it should cover most where 4G doesn't.
So can someone explain to me how on same internet 4G and Home 4G, i get almost 8Mbs @ Home but in same spot my phone gets half pretty much, but my upload is more on my phone than it is on my Home internet when its all the same lol
Notice how crappy my 3G is as well in that exact same spot the bars differ each day from 1 to 6 and its never consistent its all over the place

Data Speeds slow? Its not sprint... its the phone.

So one day I was browsing around on craigslist and I saw a new condition Moto Photon for $250.00 ( I know, Its not the galaxy s 2) but hey its was a good price and its a nice world phone. Anyways, I couldn't believe how much faster my data speeds were!
Previously, I was getting around 200-300 kbps with the latest SRF on my Epic. I am now getting 500-700 kbps in the same location with the Photon. Its a fantastic device. The antennae on the phone is really top shelf, areas I would get 1 or maybe 2 bars with the Epic I get 3-4 with the Photon. In areas I couldn't even get data, I am watching netflix with not buffering. I really forgot you could stream Netflix and YouTube on 3g because with my old epic.... you just couldn't. Anyways I am not hating. I love the Epic. I will miss the the everyone in here. Trust me, there isn't much developing going on in the photon forums yet but I am sure things will pick up in time.
Overall I am really happy with the Photon. Just wanted to share my experience with everyone. Thanks for all the support and help along the way. Having the Epic and the support in the forums have really helped broaden my understanding of Android and the entire rooting process.
Thanks Again,
Justin
After having read some early reviews it did seem to have great antenna/reception. How is moto in terms of providing source to developers? I suppose its too early to tell how fast they release updates as well?
dunno if I buy this argument, though I do have my doubts about the Epic. I'm inclined to think Sprint has plenty to do with the problem.
I drove all over Manhattan today and whenever I was stopped in traffic - which basically every 2 minutes - I'd run speed tests for both 3G and 4G. Suffice it to say that from about Times Square up through Morningside Heights, the service is (with a few exceptions) dreadful. When you get a bit south, speeds are much better. Both my wife and I (she's on a Nexus S 4G) were able to get about 6Mbps on 4G down near the Holland Tunnel. Up where we live, it's a total crapshoot. Every so often it's ok, most of the time it's garbage. 3G is on par with dial-up where we live. A colossal waste of time.
Oh, and just for a little extra chuckle, consider this: at the moment we're in upstate NY, about 75 miles north of the city. Just ran a speed test and 3G is faster here than in most of Manhattan.
Yeah I am getting pretty consistent 5-7Mbps download speeds on 4G in SoCal. I don't have any complaints here

Moto is releasing updates for the stock rom almost every other day it seems. As of now there is no source code available to Dev's. I am not sure if/when that will happen. Right now we are just getting Pseudo Roms and themes. I haven't come across any noticeable bugs yet. Although Unlocking the Boot loader breaks 4g. In my case that is a non issue because we don't have 4g in most of Riverside County.

SoCal? Where? I've been all over San Diego (almost to Mexico) and I can't find anything.
Or did you mean Central California...you know, LA and all that NORTH of San Diego?

dunno if I buy this argument, though I do have my doubts about the Epic.

I am in a non 4g area so I am not really concerned with 4g speeds. My focus is 3g. I reside in a rural area of Riverside County in Southern California. I would get atrociously slow, spotty data. Getting the Photon made a huge difference. In the same location I would rarely ever hit 400 and frequently run between 200-300 kpbs I am getting 500-700 consistently. I'm just sharing my experience for others to draw on. Granted your location may keep this from applying to you specifically. But one of the things that drew me to the Photon in the first place was the well regarded hardware specifically the radio in the device.
Also Networks are different all over the place. The user load in Manhattan is presumably higher then a rural area of So-Cal. As well as the obvious building obstructions. When I was in Manhattan about 6 months ago I enjoyed my 4g speeds on my Epic which ranged anywhere from 4Mbps-7Mbps. Granted most of what I was using the phone for was uploading videos and looking for places to eat ;-) Sure its not as fast as WiMax can get but what do you need it faster for on your phone anyway? Video Streaming, Music Streaming all worked nearly instantaneous for me.
Again just my 2 cents I am not claiming to be a sprint messiah or anything. My first android device got faster data speeds too (HTC Hero). It was a big deal for me when I got my epic and noticed the data speeds were much more choppy and slow. In case this is a big issue for other Epic users getting ready to jump ship I wanted to share my experience with the Moto Photon 4g. Not to mention the Hardware is pretty sweet and its a world phone.

Lol.. well you know San Diego isn't a major city. kidding of course. I am right in between Orange and LA counties in Uptown Whittier. I have bull bar 4G inside my apartment and basically I have one small dead spot about a half mile away but it's rock solid everywhere else. I heard there's a small pocket in San Diego but I haven't heard of it working for anybody down there though.

Thanks Again,
Justin

When roaming my epic is super fast occasionally it's also fast on sprint's network. I think the 1900mhz antenna in this phone may not be so great. While roaming on 800mhz I get 1100k+ all the time.

San Diego has so many hills, not sure if they want to invest in wimax there at this moment
It's not the phone! It's SPRINT! For the last time I have talked to Sprint and they have had outages throughout different areas, mine included. My and my girlfriend, my kids and my ex all have Sprint and all have different phones. Epic, EVO, EVO 3D and Moto Photon. All were great then they ALL sucked. Issues in my area are fixed now and I have no data issues any longer and neither does my gf, kids or ex. None of us did anything to our phones to make the signal better. So for the last time, IT's SPRINT.... not the phone.

AGREED! Sprint service in my area was great a year ago and now it's slowly gone downhill. EVO 4G; Epic 4G; Epic 4G Touch; It doesn't matter which phone I use, Sprint's 3G performance is TERRIBLE.
Um, actually it's both. The Epic, (and the nexus too) have mediocre signal reception. Couple that with low signal strength and you get really slow data. If Sprint's coverage were better the weak reception wouldn't be as big an issue. If the phone were more sensitive it could deal with the lower signal strength better.
i have the eh07 modem and ecop5 rom and my 4g sucks..it hardly connects not sure whats the issue
I know for sure its the phone. nothing posted higher 3g speeds than my old HTC HERO.
I was around 2.5mb/s peaking and 1.8+ normal rate.
Now when I got the evo, the speeds were down. Epic the speeds were down. Photon speeds were down. Epic 4g Touch the speeds were up at 1.8
So my experience for fastest as follows:
Hero: fastest 3g @2.5mbs
Photon: fastest 4g upload @1919mbs
EpTouch: fastest 4g download @15.179mbs

It's not the phones! Again until about a month and a half ago my phone used to scream and now it sucks! I never had reception problems ever. Sprint has done something (at least in my area) to slow down data service. It's obvious.
Sprint certainly had outages in various areas. Common sense would say check Sprint Forums or do a simple Google search.
Phones certainly can have an effect on your speeds but not as much as a Tower.
Having both phones side by side its Sprint and not the phone....
