is HTC Sync needed to root Aria?

I could swear I read message(s) that said HTC Sync is from the devil and that if installed it must be removed...and now I see message that states explicitly that HTC Sync should be downloaded and installed
Which is it?
I installed it and then uninstalled it after rooting. Have you tried the adb commands after installing Android SDK to see if it recognizes your device? If that doesnt work then you might need to install the HTC sync for the drivers, you can always uninstall it afterwards after youre successfully rooted to proceed.
./adb devices sees it just fine once usb is detected
just can't get the device to show when pressing power from HDBOOT and RECOVERY
tried both linux kubuntu and xp pro
My issue with that, and with htc sync installed, was with my sd card. I tried a different 2gb sd card and formatted it with my pc using an external reader, then I put the sd card back into the device, tried again and it recognized it. I had to reformat the sd card externally a few times when trying.
I am really confused by all this droid stuff. I was just getting the hang of win mobile 6.1 when my tilt went on full tilt and crapped out on me. I got the Aria, and I want to root it but I just don't get it. Do I install that SDK thing on my PC or on my phone's SD card? If I change SD cards, will it stil be rooted?

you install SDK onto something like C:\android, by default the folder is called something else when unzipped into C:\
once you've rooted, changing SD card will not un-root your roots
Thanks for the tip, I finally got that SDK tools thing to appear the right way, even got the pdanet thing hooked up. Now to see if I can actually do this root thingy.
The driver is a little bit tricky . what i do was boot the phone as normal then plug it into the computer so it will recognize the phone then i boot into the recovery.
if i don't do that. the computer will not recognize my phone when it is in the recovery mode. i did change the driver around and play with it.
yeah the drivers are always tricky lol

Any way to use Vibrant's SD card without installing drivers on school computer?

I was wondering if theres any way to do this so I could use the phone's SD card as sort of a plug & play USB flash drive for school. The school computers don't allow installing the drivers. Thanks.
Or does anyone know of a way that I can get my USB flash drive to auto-sync with my Dropbox folder when I plug it in, instead of manually having to copy everything eveytime?
Just plug it up and mount the sd. You don't have to install drivers for that. Also disable us debugging mode.
That's what I thought so that's what I did.. But the drive wouldn't show up and instead the computer asked for an administrators password to install system drivers. Oh well.
If your school has wifi, you can use an FTP server like SwiFTP or EStrongs File Explorer, both of which are available for free in the android market. This will allow you to browse the contents of your /sdcard and /sdcard/sd from a browser window or even windows explorer.

[Q]HD2 Android file browsing on computer?

is there a program to be able to view all of your files on your android and SD card on your computer under the "My computer" folder. Just like you could do with WM on it w/o useing Sync or WMDC?
Yes, the Droid Explorer.

[Q] Downloading from the Opera Browser or Internet Explorer

When I try to download software from the HTC website from my phone, it comes up with a username and password so I can't download it. By the way, I can't download it from my PC and then put it on my phone, as the software must be downloaded from the phone.
download to your PC, copy to an sdcard and transfer to phone.

Thanks but I have a normal SD card and not a Micro SD. Do you have any other suggestions?
if you connect the device in activesync mode, you can transfer files through windows explorer into the phone's internal storage.
still, i can't help but wonder, what it is you want to download from htc that requires an account and what is supposed to be opened on the phone (besides maybe a few hotfixes that, depending on your rom, might not be necessary)

SD Card Issue

So I just purchased a 128gb sd card off amazon and it came in the mail today. I got it and first tried copying all of my data over from my old sd card. I have a mac so I used disk utility and formatted it ms-dos(fat) because it wouldn't show up in my finder without formatting it. Everything copied but then when i plugged it into my phone it would not show up. I also tried the same process with exfat but my media wouldn't show up, at least it mounted though, but only 200mb. The only way i can get my sd card to work on my phone is formatting it through android but then it doesn't work on my computer. Any ideas of what to do? The phone is also not showing up when I plug it in directly via a usb cable and try to use android file transfer.
Thanks to limited file support by your mac
You can connect your phone, select mtp and should show up in file explorer (if mac supports mtp). Android offers few more connectivities as well if mtp doesn't work. If nothing works, well, use Windows or Linux.

If you use a Mac, download the official Google app 'android file transfer.'
Then when you connect any Android a window will open showing you the contents of your device and you can drag and drop ...
