I am currently tethering my Nexus 4 to a Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I get a solid 45 mbps down in my area on Verizon, but when I create a WiFi hotspot and connect my Nexus 4 to the WiFi, I get a maximum of 1 mbps down (I can get up to 10mbps up sometimes). Does anyone know why that is? I've literally tried everything. I've tried different roms on BOTH phones, different combinations of kernels, different combinations of tethering apps...I cannot get anything above 1 mbps down. I know there's nothing wrong with the WiFi chip on either phones, they can connect to my home router and get expected speeds. I can connect my Nexus 7 and my laptop to my Gnex and get great speeds, so I don't know why the Nexus 4 is having problems!
If anyone could offer any suggestions or anything, please don't hesistate to post. I am at a total loss!

Ok so I have been searching the forums for a few days now and have yet to find the answer to my question. So please don't bash me for not using the search function cuz I did. There is a good chance that my question has already been answered and if it has please direct me to the proper thread. Otherwise my issue is that my epic is rooted as of a few days ago cuz I moved into an apartment and I don't have any Internet yet. Not for a few weeks, but I am using the android wifi tether app. That's working good for me except I am not getting any 4g speed through it. If I'm lucky i will get maybe 1 to 1.5 Mbps but most of the time less than 1 mbps. Does anyone know if the wifi App supports wimax speeds or not. Yes I have 4g coverage in my area. Where I am sitting right now on my phone speed test results are above 3.5 to 4 mbps. But while using my iPad (which I am using to write this) via wifi tether app speed tests are dreadfully low. Same with all other devices I have tried connecting like my xbox or laptop. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Is that the results withe 4g on? 3-4mbs? I get that with 3g untethered 4g untethered is around 8mbs. Have you tried testing it in another area? You might just be in a 4g deadspot. With wifi tether I get 3-4mbs on 4g. I can't really tell you where to go for info but those numbers sound more like 3g to me.

Yes that is with 4g on. Where my phone is this very second. I have 2 bars of 4g signal. And it's working fine for me. Sitting side by side with 4g activated and wifi tethering on. My phone will get 4mbps and iPad will get 1.5mbps. From the same server on speediest.net. And I run the tests at separate times so they don't conflict for bandwidth.
Update: just ran test again.
iPad - 350ms ping 1.63mbps download .86mbps upload
Phone - 122ms ping 3.96mbps download 1.2mbps upload
This is a known issue..it happens in android-wifi-tether and mobile-ap as well..its definitely using the 4g connection and wifi should be capable of transmitting more..I mean even the lowest is capable of 11mbps..but N should be a lot higher.
As far as I know there is no solution yet...the EVO had the same issue at one point but it was fixed I hear..
Maybe it has something to do with the settings on your phone. I noticed with mine that my speed would just climb and climb then suddenly just drop at around 8. It wouldn't be a slow climb either it's like it's actually being throttled somehow. Try clearing the cache or something, but for some reason those number just don't sound right to me.

Any idea how or what fixed it?
Just factory reset my phone last night.. And as for the numbers.. I know right.. Something isn't working here..

In their case it had to do with a routing table..but that routing table was for HTC devices so its not related to ours...
Both Mobile-AP and Android-Wifi-Tether experience the same issue as well :/..I do not think its wifi related either..it must be something in between the software and the sending to wifi.
Reason I say this is if you try the device with 4g on 1 bar, then 4g on 2 bars, then 4g on 3 bars on both the device and on phone you will see the speeds vary..example:
1 bar
phone: 4mbps/1mbps
laptop: 0.5mbps/0.03mbs
2bars
phone: 7mpbs/1mbps
laptop: 2mbps/1mbps
If it was the wifi speed, then the speed would not have dropped so much.. something in between is effecting it
Oh.. That makes sense. It's just too bad though. Thanks for helping me understand.
Probably the way the wifi and 4g radios are set up and how they interact with each other, maybe 4g has more priority than wifi. I'm just guessing though. I don't know much

Just FYI I too was getting slow speeds but with Sprints hotspot that I was paying $30 a month for. Needless to say I cancel the feature and will seek rooting my phone and add the free tethering, casue at those speeds it isnt worth it.
Sounds like the problem you are having might be caused by something that is the result of 4G and Wifi frequencies being the similar. If you are using both frequencies in a close proximity such as a room or house the frequencies have a high likeliness of causing interferences by reflecting off each other. A way to test this would be to compare wirless tethered speeds to wired ones on the same device.... Hope this helps.

Thing is its getting full speed on the device...at the time its using wimax..so wimax is not having the issue..not to mention..there is a relation to the wimax bars and the wimax speed which is strange...
What connection speed are you getting to your router? For some reason I can not get above 65Mbs connection. All my laptops connect at the 150Mbs. Any tweaks that you guys know of to increase this?
Dumb question. Is Wireless N on by default on the Evo these days?

Settings/wireless& networks/ wifi settings/ click the router your connected too and an info window will pop up.
There are probably apps available to give you wifi and router information also, I haven't checked.
The highest I've seen on mine was 54 Mbps.
I only see 65mbps with full signal, literally in the same room as my router, regardless of what router I use.
So folks seeing 100+: What router you usin', and are you lying?
So what am I doing wrong? I top out at about 30Mbps on my budget cable connection wired or wireless to the laptop. Speedtest.net app maxes out at 10 to the Evo.
72 mbps here completely stock

My Evo shows the connection at 65mbps but I've only ever achieved between 6 and 7 mbps using Xtremelabs Speedtest. Annoying since my net package is supposed to be up to 15 mbps but I guess that's only going to be under perfect circumstances.

Eh, sometimes I get better with my other computers, sometimes not. I mean, my PC connects at 300mbps but there's no way I'm actually going to get that from the internet with my plan only at 15. I think some folks may have some confusion that the settings are only telling you the network connection, not necessarily the internet speed.

That's the downstream bandwidth, which seems actually pretty good.
What we're talking about is intra-network throughput. Speed in which your device communicates with your router.
I had to install a modified wireless kernel module to get N back after the 2.3 Gingerbread update. Or one can install a custom kernel which includes the wireless N fix such as freedom or chopsuey.

Okay. I've searched XDA and Google, and even posted in another thread here but never got an answer. I am leaving VZW for T Mobile. I am expecting my Nexus 4 to arrive this coming week. I plan on rooting the N4 pretty much as soon as I get it. I have also read lots of posts regarding difficulties tethering a laptop to an N4 on Tmo.
My question is:
Will I be able to tether (wifi or BT) my N7 to my Tmo N4? If so, will i have to use any special apps?
I have had success using PdaNet+ on my VZW phones to tether my N7, but I need to know if Tmo will flag me for the N7 like they do with others for their laptops. My daily usage includes the Slacker Radio and NetFlix apps. i also have OnLive, but didn't typically use it that much due to high latency issues in the Lynnhaven area of Virginia Beach. If absolutely needed, I am open to the VPN option, but I would need instruction as to how to do that (like do I set up the VPN on the N7 or the N4?) but I would prefer, if possible, to just tether normally.
Thanks in advance. Btw, please no "it works for me" posts. If you're going to answer, please provide relevant information(i.e. HOW it works for you). Thanks again!

i'm on Orange UK (aka. EE now also incorporating T-Mobile) and couldn't originally tether either my dell NB or playbook -- that is, they could connect to the N4 wifi hotspot but no data transfer nor internet access was possible. this was despite my being able to tether successfully on my old HD2 using the same account.
turned-out i needed to phone Orange and have them activate tethering on the phone, i received an "service update" text and restarted, since when it's worked a treat on both devices. there was no charge for this and i was told that orange imposes no restrictions on tethering outside of the existing account data cap, in my case 1GB.
t-mobile may operate a different policy.
EDIT: just realized, Norfolk ... Virginia (not UK), doh!
I'm on tmobile US on the unlimited plan and I'm able to, love it the only thing battery sucks :/

Truly Unlimited blocks the tethering feature from being added to your account. However, since the Nexus 4 is a stock device and doesn't connect to the network using the tethering APN while tethering is enabled, you should be able to tether any device to your Nexus 4 without issue.
Sv: [Q] Tethering a Nexus 7 to a Nexus 4 on T Mobile Truly Unlimited
Yes you can tether to the Nexus 4 on T-Mo. I don't it a lot but I used to the tether to the Nexus 4 a couple times when no WiFi was available.

Well that's why I'm asking the question. There is no WIFI at my work so without tethering to my N4, I will have no way to use my N7 online. Like I said in the OP. I watch Netflix everyday during down time and stream Slacker Radio while I'm working. I work security on 9.5 hour shifts. Netflix and Slacker just make the day go by.
Just for anyone wondering, I have had no issues tethering my Nexus 7 with my Nexus 4. Been doing it for a couple weeks now with no issues. Actually, with Verizon 4G, my data speeds would fall of rapidly as the day went on, dropping down below 1 Mbps by noon. With T-Mobile's HSPA+, I have been getting between 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps down and around 2 Mbps up consistently all day every day.

youll be able to tether until they catch you, then they will force you to buy the tethering plan if you want to tether further.

From what I have read throughout my searches on XDA and Google, it seems that as long as you are tethering another mobile device, i.e. a tablet, they don't seem to be able to tell. I have also read some accounts saying not to use "desktop mode"in your browser. I have been using Chrome, Firefox, Netflix, OnLive, and even BitTorrent (small files so far) with no issues so far.

If anyone else has had different experiences with similar usage, and only concerning tethering tablets and other mobile devices via the Nexus 4, please post them for others (and me) to learn from.
Has anyone else noticed that since the release of LTE, they don't get the speeds they used to? I've tried both the epc APN and fast APN and it makes no difference. I'm talking about HSPA speeds here too by the way not LTE. I live about 45 mins west of DC and I used to pull up to 22mbps down near my house on HSPA. I'm about 15 miles outside of LTE coverage and have used ROMs and the old radios that support it. That function seems to work fine. However, I've tried every working radio, to include the new .54 one and have yet to see my speeds coming back. I thought this could be due to reforming or preparation for LTE until this week when I got my wife an iPhone 5. Side by side her phone always averages faster speed. On LTE it is a little faster, but when connecting to the same test servers though speedtest.net, her phone can get the 20+ Mbps speeds that my phone used to get while mine is capped at 15mbps. It is frustrating. I know there is no real need for that extra bandwidth when I'm just using the phone, but I've noticed my speeds neutered across the board compared to before the .48 radio and corresponding android update. Anyone else experience this or know of a fix?

Try adding these lines to your build.prop. I can't confirm that they will work but I read it will raise the top GPRS net speed and HSDPA up and down speeds.

Question;
Where do you stick these in your build.prop? Anywhere? Because I don't have anything listed in my build.prop.
I am suffering from horrible speeds on my N4. The handoff is horrible, the dropped network is horrible. I've tried all the APNs and everything else I can think of. So I might as well try something new.

then just add those lines from previous post at the bottom.
Well, I used to pull 25 at my house, but then it dropped to 15 capped. Wife's iphone still pulls 25 at the same spot. But since Monday, there is LTE pretty much everywhere I go, so I pull 20-35 again. I was very curious about the issue, call T-mobile support and opened this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201576. Still have not found out what happened
Has anyone on T-Mobile been able to do this at full download speeds? If I Wi-Fi tether my N4 to my laptop or old HTC Vivid, I have no problems. When I tether it to my N10, speed drops to around 500K, regardless of the area I'm in (H, H+, G4). The same thing happens when tethering via bluetooth. Since the N10 had no problem with full bandwidth on my home network via Wi-Fi, I can figure out why the two Nexus devices don't cooperate. They're both running JB 4.2.2 (AOKP M2). Any ideas?

It might just be you and me, buddy, cuz I been searching for days and can't find anyone else who has this problem, much less a fix. T-Mobile support finally threw their hands up, basically saying, since they don't carry the N10, good luck with your search. Lol.
