Forum etiquette rant!

This has been winding me up for a while. I don't post too often but read alot and there are many MANY users who quote an entire previous post to reply.
They even do it on the second post in a thread. Its not like anyone is thinking you're talking to someone else.

I don't even think it's bad... the quot is in a different color, pretty easy to spot and "not read"

This kind of quoting is totally redundant and a waste of space. It makes threads longer and difficult to read.
You really should quote only the most relevant parts where it clarifies your answer, marking omitted parts with "(...)"

I'd rather people quote entire posts than not at all.. There are some people who jump into a thread and respond to significantly older posts without reference.
I'm more concerned that the number of people who are inventing their own outrageous claims (without evidence) and trying to shove it down others throats aren't even being told off by mods. It is effectively degrading the quality of discussions, because trolls win either way. With some of these trolls, some threads get closed because of flamewars, and there is no way to dispute their claims without causing one (some of the trolls are wrong).
Not going to name people, but for instance, there is at least one GPS "expert" going around thread to thread stating that Google maps is faulty and that the GPS is flawless. He is causing a flamewar on EVERY thread because he hasn't actually proven that it is faulty, yet, mods aren't warning him, requiring that he provides accurate evidence as requested by those in the community, and because it's clear he hasn't actually done sufficient research, there is simply insufficient information to make the claims

We need quotes, just makes it easier to spot and understand the poster if they are replying to someone specifically (question, opinion etc) otherwise it seems that they are talking to themselves. Quotes are shown in a different color so there is no need to read it if you don't want to, pretty easy to spot.
On the subject of second posts. You should quote the person if your indeed replying to the OP's opinion, question etc otherwise it might seem that your asking for something else. Quoting, if done correctly, just makes it easier to read and follow a forum topic but each to their own I s'pose.

Your first point here does not make sense. Surely if its a second post in a thread it is obvious who and what you are replying to. The reason you are posting is to reply to something above so just following the conversation flow.
I agree with the second point. Quotes used in the right context are indeed useful.

it would be the best thing to have a forum option to expand quotes automatically or to display them in a collapsed view.

Or even a half-collapsed view.
So show a maximum of 5 lines of the quote (and hide an images), and then have a "expand to see full quote".
Then there is still quick access to the complete context, things are clean, and the flow of conversation is maintained.

You guys are coming up with some great ideas. Maybe the development of this app could include it in an update?

I find the problem is increasing to the extent that someone will post a long and valid post only to have someone quote the whole thing and put a +1 at the end.
Can we find another way to agree with people other than taking up huge amounts of space?
Maybe start the quote with a couple of lines, then ... to show it continues.

You're right. There's a thanks button it's not really the intended use but if you agree with someone why not just thank him?

as you all know j.Anderson is a tremendous pain in the kneck. and has been banned for being one.
however another thread popped where you all speculated its was his second account. the thread was deleted but im here to tell you it was his account.
the reason im telling you this is because now i know he is not beyond making sock-puppets to make stupid posts
so the favour i want to ask is, if you see a post that seem familiar in wording or content. as well as reporting via the correct methods could you also let me know.
weve had this issue before with another user not long before 2.1 was due to be released and i dont want it to happen again

(take that file and unlock the phone)
then open file manager and type this into system/app

I'm not going to be able to be on xda 24/7 like I usually am for the next two weeks. I am asking this community to please keep me informed by private message of any new developments like: News on the GB update, news on the WiThin, etc. I'll have the app set to notify me of new messages every hour, so this would be very much apreciated. I'd say the your 1st posts made 75% of users laugh and feel good, while the other 25 were people that are just grumpy. Your posts help make others productive

edit out the link.. they just want clicks to draw 5miljon note users to their site.
the more ppl that goes into their site = more money.
but a very strange "open letter" - article.
But i guess you cant stop ppl from not getting the idea of the note.

for me, the article writer is just pure and plainly flame baiting....
why? maybe to attract more readers (and flame baiters) to go their side...
it's just really a waste of time (on my part), contributing to such inane and preposterous remarks on the part of the writer...
I'd rather just go on with my day and use my Note as what I would like it to be...

[Q] Best battery life kernel/ROM?

I recently got the galaxy s3 and gave my s2 to my sister. I have been a long time lurker here and have put man android versions on my s2 but before i have it to my sister I put the newest version of 4.0.3 on the s2.
she is now complaining that the battery life sucks, so I am looking for the best kernel/ROM combo to increase her battery life. Any help would be appreciated!

Im not going to suggest any one rom or kernel.
I will suggest you look in the roll up sticky thread for the list of all stock firmwares and check out the frankenfirmwares. Pick at random, use a battery monitor app to check your usage over a week, then flash something new. Let us know how that goes!

well seeing as it is not my phone anymore i cant be trying out firmwares for a week. I was looking for peoples experiences and was not expecting such an unhelpful userbase. forums nowadays are really going downhill...you guys and head-fi are both becoming ridiculous.

(People who crosses boundaries or don't read basic rules to keep a clean forum in this case and they don't understand their situation isn't special at all in a 4 million users forum, and they are not special)
