Changing DPI - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a decent guide to changing the DPI for the nexus 4? I changed it using the build.prop to 240 and now the navigation bar (back, menu, switch tasks) are not centered and also when I recieve a phone call it is not centered.
Any help would be appreciated!

I'm really just wanting a stock ROM this time... But if that is the only solution I guess I will have to use a custom ROM.

All roms for the nexus are pretty much just stock roms with tweaks.. Besides MIUI.
Besides PA, there really isn't a way to get what you are looking for

Like the guy above me said, its pretty much like a stock ROM but with tweaks. And yes it is the safest way.

[POLL] Stock vs tablet workspace

I would like to start this to see how many people use tablet workspace since it seems only a few roms seem to be embracing this. Please state what rom you are using and what you use to trigger tablet mode.

Don't like roms that shrink the nav bar too much either!

Stock, rooted 4.1.1 here.
Used the local.prop DPI setting to get it into tablet mode and use the app "Set Orientation" to force the last remains (like lockscreen) into landscape for total tablet experience to my likes
Also I'm using GoLauncherEx, which works fine for me landscaped.
Alot of you are using a depreciated method of forcing tabUI by using dpi hacks. IMHO only sgt7 and PA are the only seamless roms that do this well. PA also lets you choose the navbar height independently.
Personally I would never run phabletUI on my tablet. That sounds funny

I wouldn't call it "depricated", I'd call it "the savest and most less intrusive way".
I don't want to flash a different ROM and I don't have to edit any system files - #1 way of doing it for me. And it works just fine

It may seem like its working fine but when I did it that way many apps were gone from my market (google play music, wallet off the top of my head) and the copy/paste bar was nowhere to be found when editing text.
Of course I could have messed something up and yours could be fine.

About the apps, maybe I just got lucky so far and the ones I use on my N/ don't set the compatibility stuff in the way that makes them appear to be incompatible with the N7.
About the copy/paste bar, I just tried and yes, it's "gone" like you say.
But I use GoKeyboard and that has copy/paste buttons as well, so I can live with that for now

[Q] Extend Wallpaper under Status Bar and Softkeys?

Is there any means to extend the wallpaper underneath the Status Bar and Softkeys? I dislike the black banding, especially under the Softkeys. I know Paranoid Android does this but one reason I bought a Nexus was to get out of ROMs--plus I'd rather not waste space on ROM backups.
I have root and the willingness to muck about in the system APKs.
Bump.

Or, I could ask and see if any developer who already knows how this is done in Paranoid Android will tell me.
I would like to do this as well... is it possible without a custom ROM?
it needs framework modifications, but mods exist. evilisto made one if i remember that right.
i dunno why you would want one over a rom though. makes no sense. roms on nexus base on aosp and official vendors blobs. what you get is stock android plus features. you cannot compare it to roms on legacy devices which emulate android, need hacks and exploits.
ps. PA has per app coloring. this goes way past simple transparent bar on the homescreen.

heck no. pa is a playground for features you havent seen or known before, like hybrid engine. you wont find it anywhere else.

Starting to get bored of the stock look and feel. Any ROMs out there that may have To

Don't get me wrong, I love stock. Just lately I want something a little different. Just to try. Maybe I would miss stock after that but is there anything out there that I could try?

I agree. I've used avatar before. If you want a different look this should fit your needs. Add this plus the newest miui launcher, which you can also theme (lock screen included) and you will have a completely different look. I liked it myself but find myself always going back to stock.

change the dpi in hybrid settings.
You don't need to change rom's to completely change the way your phone looks. If you want to change rom's that's great and all, but I'd say that everything cool that you see on mycolorscreen.com can be achieved with the factory rom. You just have to use your imagination and think for yourself.
Lot of options!

If you look at the development you can find some Xperia (sony), Touchwiz (samsung), Blur (motorola) and even LG alike UI's themes on roms, just look at them at development thread. If you want something closer to stock I would recommend Asylum rom, its a darker version of CM10.1 with some improvements and daily updates
Try them and find the one you like the most! Then come and tell us your experience!
Yeah I have PA. There's really no launcher that I like since Nova and Apex change the dock size a little (too spaced out). I'll take a look at avatar ROM.

Enable Navigation bar/Disable capacitive buttons and lights

This is a mod how to enable navigation bar(on screen
buttons) , its very simple and easy...
Warring: if you mess something dont blame me.
Add the following line at the end of buid.prop file
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
now on reboot we will have nav-bar like on nexus 4
To turn off capacitive buttons:
Go to system/use/key layout/ synaptics-rmi-touchscreen.kl
Long press it and click open with text editor
Delete everything there
Reboot.
To turn of capacitive button lights:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deskangel.kblight
Or
This will mess your screen brightness and it will stay on 100% all the time. You have to use screen filter app from play store or some other app to control the brightness of your screen.
Go to system/lib/hw
There find lights.msm8960.so
Rename it to (whatever you want)
Reboot.

To turn off the lights you can just edit framework-res.apk.

This is only applicable to AOSP/CM ROMs this won't work on sense based ROMs.

Here you go, if your rooted, extract this and put it in etc/init.d to turn off your lights on boot.
Or, just execute it with root explorer.

Does work, been using it. On sense. If you are using a custom kernel with bln then that could be why. Make sure you set permissions though!

I only managed to get a nav bar by using PA, fiddling with build.prop never gave me a nav bar GPE or anything else.

I think I read on the s4 forums that they also can't get this going with stock based roms (touchwizz and gpe), something about the lines of code for this to happen being removed or not there.
From personal experience, I could only get the navbar on pa. Another person on a thread enabled it on a cm based ROM.
So in the end, yes, it seems the only way to get the nab bar working is a cm based ROM. Its a pity cause that means we'll be giving up:
* good speakers - missing beats audio
* ir blaster and fantastic TV app.
* blink feed
* slightly better camera optimizations
Anyone able to recommend a cm based ROM ? Or at least alternative apps for the problems above?

Nope....doesn't work on Sense-based or GPE. Tried it like........I lost count. I kinda savvy it too. However, even on a Touchwiz I can't produce it. So probaly it only works on CM or CM based roms.

[Request] Quick Setting Panel Customized -solved

Can some one create a flashable Mod for rooted stock rom, which allow to add and edit the quick setting panel as the CM has one?
This is the feature I most miss on my Nexus 5 by far with the stock rom, on my previous phones I had alwasy CM roms installt. Maybe I will also do with my current N5 when official nightlys are available.

I highly recommend Cataclysm Rom, the best rom for Nexus 5 by far imo. It has almost every mods and tweaks you need except for theme chooser, etc.

Google really nailed it with the Nexus 5 and 4.4. This is the first phone I am not running to root, unlock, and start flashing away stock. With a few *minor* tweaks such as quick settings customization it would be near perfect.
I want to add screen orientation and flashlight to the quick settings. Google why cant you just be smart!

I definitively will give it a try, it looks really interesting.
Just wait for Xposed Framework, lets you modify stock without reflashing, etc. It doesn't work yet since 4.4 breaks everything in it, but the developer will probably have that all fixed up by the end of the month if I had to guess.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401
I still don't get why Google didn't make this feature. The Quick Settings Panel hardly improved from Android 4.2. I would stay 100% stock ROM if Google added this feature, battery percentage (no not the crappy white one that's in there now) and long press volume rocker to skip tracks.
