Configure/force android beam to use wifi direct instead of bluetooth? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love the concept behind android beam: sharing videos, pictures with other nfc phones , nfc enables the connection between the devices and then the transfers are made via BLUETOOTH wth google, is ridiculously slow , so samsung knew better and they making the transfers via wifi direct halleluhjah! the horrible thing is that they named their sharing service sbeam (like we need more branding) and its only for galaxy s phones with ioswiz, i mean touchwiz is there a way to make android beam on the nexus work only with wifi direct (like samsung does) ?

someone have a Galaxy S phone we can just rip the apk from maybe? seems like the simplest solution??
then it's just a question of dropping the apk on both devices and giving it a test... no ?? I'de be game. not really put the beam to good use yet !

IMO... Google needs to address this for if it is not on every wifi direct compatible device, what good is it?
"I made a video for you. OK, here... wait... ummm, go to http://whatapainindieass.com and download the apk and sideload it. Are you done yet? Ok I'll wait. How 'bout now?"

No, in order to use sbeam you NEED to have touchwiz, thats what i read :crying:

Guess there's no app yet that does this :crying:

There are a couple of apps that will do this, albeit without being initialized by nfc. Search for wifi direct or WiFi shoot.

I agree that such an app would be extremely useful. It would be nice to use NFC to set up a Bluetooth or (even better) Wi-Fi connection between two devices to transfer files.
Some app that runs on all NFC devices (not just Samsung branded ones) would be extremely useful.

Video Call PC - WTF, this must be a conspiracy!

I have searched the net for hours, and I cannot find any easy method to make a Video call from my Galaxy S to my PC via the net.....
Why the heck is this so difficult? The main result I get is Fring, which used to work with Skype, but doesnt any more, so that is useless. They dont even have a PC Client, which is beyond me!
Then there is Qik, but that is useless as well. Either can be used Phone-Phone, but I want Phone - PC so I can video chat with family while I travel.
I am not very experienced with this, but apparently Fring can be configured for SIP services.... but when I looked these up, they are require payment.
Can anyone help me out???? The phone has a front facing camera and can connect to wifi, there is no reason I can see that it shouldnt be an easy thing to do - it seems like all the big telcos are holding back the technology so they can charge their huge rates, hence why I think its a conspiracy!!!!
Cheers!
Yes, I too think the biggest reason for not having video calling over a data connection is due to the telcos' influences. Technically i see no limitation, Fring already did this and showed that it is possible. Skype IMO has the infrastructure but they are more interested in pleasing Verizon than their own customers .
Sipdroid, works with any sip client and trunk that supports video calls.
i tried sipdroid, but i couldn't get it to work, and when i searched somebody said you needed to pay for the account.
but if you say it works, i'll give it another go. so does it work phone to pc or phone to phone or both?
Bump. I've been wondering the same. My small research also seamed to indicate that sipdroid was the way to go.
i've been trying to find a popular video calling App that works with the PC
so far Sipdroid seems to be the only one
"iMovachi"
Ugly as hell and it doesn't support die front camera of the Galaxy S, bit it is the ONLY video chat software that works from android to pc and vice versa.

Not compatible with Galaxy S and the software is a totally mess. Force closes every few seconds, horrible resolution, etc...
Has anyone tried ooVoo yet ?
The single user is free (3 user free for 30 days) and it seems to work perfect with the front camera. It was also a doddle to set up.
I use Yahoo Messenger video chat.
I tried Yahoo Messenger but it didn't support the front camera

Hey.. ooVoo works! Thanks for the advice. Front camera works perfect. I didnt test the voice calls yet... but its free to call phone - PC through wi-fi... its still beta.. hope they improve its quality soon.
another good one is Tango works great between phones
but no PC support yet
Skype app on iPhone already supports video - shame the Android version is still in the dark ages

Skype now supports video chat on Android, but..

It isn't available in the market any more on my Transformer, and it lists a very specific set of devices for said support. I wonder if there is a way someone can hack this into a working state?
LOL Skype doesn't support video call for android except for the Thunderbolt haha. And devs have been trying to port that over for months but unsuccessful so far.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
No, there is an update today that changes the UI quite a bit and apparently adds video calling for the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia neo and Xperia pro. I copied the apk over to my TF and it works, but no access to video calling functions. I am wondering if I can trick it somehow.
Holy ****... The OP is right.
Skype has been updated to version 2.0.0.45, which includes video calling for selected devices (Nexus S and several others). It's no longer visible on TF in the market, but I updated it on my Galaxy S. It works on SGS, much better interface but no video calling.
Haven't tried this apk on TF yet, and I really hope someone can do something with it.
Edit: Beat me to it!
Gotta remember here.... "Android" doesn't really mean "Every device that runs every version of Android".
I believe there are some hardware issues to be solved to support front camera video on every device, you can't do it globally in one go for every android.
It appears honeycomb support is dropped at all, maybe they release a seperate version.
That's very strange, because I can find it in the market even if a lot of people said that it is no more available... but when I try to install it is saying that it's impossible to install in my device.
Is it normal to find in the market apps that you can't install?

I just downloaded the app to my desire S and video called my friend , the video was actually pretty impressive. it started off a little pixelated but about a minute it in its was very clear and very responsive. the call was made over wifi.
happy.

Just a side question that I always want to ask.
How do you copy out the apk downloaded from the market your phone to the tablet?
(Like this Skype apk, its not longer visible for the tablet in the android market), but from your phone, you can download it from the market. Where its stored in the phone and how to copy it out?
Thanks for the info!
if you install appinstaller from the market it has a backup feature that stores your selected .apk file on your sd card in a folder called back up i believe. I'm sure there will be other back up apps out there but this one has worked great for me in the past.
Just got notified of a new Skype version on my tab. Seems like maybe they've allowed Honeycomb installs... anybody tried it?

[News] Skype now has video...but not SGS? (link to something may work pg2)

I'm updating Skype now on the market. Says has video now. But says only for selected handsets and SGS is not one of them.
ye, sucks typically skype
This is baffling. If the Nexus S can support it without a front-facing camera, why not the SGS?!
Oh crapas. Its bad enough that they decided not to support one of (if not the most) popular android phone running 2.3 now. What's worse is...
a. DOES NOT SAVE PASSWORD. UGH.
b. I personally think the UI is worse. At least the "Sign-Out" is on the menu bar instead of buried in the "status" menu. But because it does not save password, this really sucks. Would it kill them to put a big red "Turn Off" button somewhere?
c. Seemed less stable, but that might be my phone.
d. I thought that the new "SMS" functionality would mean that Skype is now an SMS client, which would combine messaging functions into one program. Add a dialler into it, and it could be kick-ass. But this is NOT SMS. This is a text message sent over Skype's network to an SMS gateway to a phone. It costs much more than my SMSs through my carrier, which are true SMS.
I only use Skype on my phone when I'm travelling and need to call international. If this program was better, I would not mind leaving it on all the time. Now, google talk is starting to look better vis-a-vis Skype. If only I could call phones from Google Talk, like I can on my computer...

What we really need is open standard video conferencing protocols.

Its one of those things in which the network is the value. Skype is used for international business and communication. It works better than Google Talk (which also is not open I believe) for talk between China and USA. It works for making cheap international computer to phone calls.
But yes...the company does suck. They can't provide chat customer service...and they're a communications company. Also interface is only so-so.
I NEED Skype on my phone...if no Android version I would get an iPhone. Only other way to call USA from China (without paying huge rates) is to activate VPN and use Google Talk. And that option only started 2 months ago. And I can only call a computer, not a phone with Google.
Fring and Nimbus, IMO, are no better than Skype and don't have desktop clients.

I hate it when people suggest Fring as a replacement for Skype. Give me a software to video chat between Android and PC seamlessly and then I'll call it a replacement for Skype.

it's ironic, cause fring used to be like that, it did support video between mobile (syambian i guess for instance) and pc skype seamlessly. but because of skype they had to remove this option.

Not working for me here.... I'm just trying with Skype Test Call user, which video is not showing up as an option... Perhaps it would work with a real contact? not sure.
Ok, I guess i should read more closely... I uninstalled first, then reinstalled your patched version. I get a video call option now, but the video preview on my side is really messed up.... running Darky's 10.1 (JVH base)
I see 4 pictures of my self from the front facing camera, all on the horizontal view screen... each picture is distorted in shape and has white lines running horizontally through it..

How exactly is it better for talk between China and USA? It's just like any video call software out there. Windows live messenger/yahoo/google/apple/logitech all work, to name a few.
And for phone calls, it's about the most expensive VoIP solution out there.
I use voip.ms, which is cheaper and works with open protocols. With my ATA I can call with a real phone, with my computer turned off. Works on android too.

Samsung Gear Sport (or S3) compatibility with 6t

I have a 6t and love it and looking to add a smart watch . I really a leaning towards the Samsung Gear Sport (or possibly an s3) over a Wear OS watch. I'm concerned over compatibility with it being a non Samsung phone and certain functionality not working . The main things i'm wondering about is SMS messages, Call info, email coming to the watch. The compatibility page for the Sport shows not compatible with non-samsung android for messaging specifically but i've read others say they had luck w/ it. (although i'm not certain if thats w/ the S3 or Sport). I'm curious if anyone w/ a 6 or 6t has had any experience w/ the Gear Sport (or s3) w/ those features specifically.
Beyond that the big things i am wanting to use is standalone GPS and offline music but dont think i'd have an issue w/ that
any feedback would be awesome! thank you!
i have 6t and gear s3. it works like any other android phones.
havent had any issue yet.
Awesome thank you. So if you get a text or email can you read it on the watch and reply? Incoming call info good too? I wonder if the same works on the sport too since it shows slightly different info on it's compatibility chart compared to the s3

yes, yes and yes
everything works as it should. I have S3 and absolutely no problems pairing and using it with 6T
Everything works as expected
I changed my S8 for an 6T and I don't have any problems with my Gear Sport. If you didn't bought a watch yet, I would suggest to go for S3, as Gear Sport doesn't have a mic and a speaker. Not heaving a speaker means that the watch will not ring on i coming calls and messages, it will only vibrate.
thank you both for your input on this! so i was partially hopeful that this would all work w/ the S3 since that compatibility chart shows "limited availability" for non samsung android for messaging and the Sport chart shows "not supported". so maybe its just an outdated chart or we're just getting lucky i guess. Support told me yesterday that w/ a non samsung android and the Gear Sport you'd get a notification that you have a SMS but you wouldnt be able to see who it was from or read it. hoping what you guys reported is the actual norm though! w/ SMS can you read the whole string of text convo or just the new message that arrived? not a big deal but was curious. I like the look of the S3 better but really like the waterproof part of the Sport. i'm not sure the speaker/mic is a big thing for me or not as i'd be fine w/ just vibration (as long as its sufficient)
I'm using Gear sport with OP6T and I don't have any issue.
I have the Gear S3 and everything works fine, but I should mention that I use Textra for SMS, not the crap default messaging app. I can read the full message and reply with quick replies or voice to text.

I got my Gear Sport and working great with my 6t! one thing missing is the Messenger app on the watch. I do get notifications for new texts and i can reply but cannot see past messages or the whole thread like it supposedly let you do w/ the messenger app. From what i gathered a lot of others are having the same issue and they used to have it sounds like. I'd bet its because its not a samsung phone so they stripped that feature from non -samsung which is super lame. is everyone else seeing the same thing?

Do you use Android Auto in your vehicle? Sometimes when I receive a call, my Gear s3 will take the call instead of my vehicle. Then in the speaker menu I can only see Bluetooth of my Gear s3, but does not show more that one Bluetooth option. It's frustrating. If I turn my watch off, it goes back to my vehicle. Once in a while it works fine, but I can't rely on it working.
