It isn't available in the market any more on my Transformer, and it lists a very specific set of devices for said support. I wonder if there is a way someone can hack this into a working state?
LOL Skype doesn't support video call for android except for the Thunderbolt haha. And devs have been trying to port that over for months but unsuccessful so far.
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
No, there is an update today that changes the UI quite a bit and apparently adds video calling for the Nexus S, Desire S, Xperia neo and Xperia pro. I copied the apk over to my TF and it works, but no access to video calling functions. I am wondering if I can trick it somehow.
Holy ****... The OP is right.
Skype has been updated to version 2.0.0.45, which includes video calling for selected devices (Nexus S and several others). It's no longer visible on TF in the market, but I updated it on my Galaxy S. It works on SGS, much better interface but no video calling.
Haven't tried this apk on TF yet, and I really hope someone can do something with it.
Edit: Beat me to it!
Gotta remember here.... "Android" doesn't really mean "Every device that runs every version of Android".
I believe there are some hardware issues to be solved to support front camera video on every device, you can't do it globally in one go for every android.
It appears honeycomb support is dropped at all, maybe they release a seperate version.
That's very strange, because I can find it in the market even if a lot of people said that it is no more available... but when I try to install it is saying that it's impossible to install in my device.
Is it normal to find in the market apps that you can't install?

I just downloaded the app to my desire S and video called my friend , the video was actually pretty impressive. it started off a little pixelated but about a minute it in its was very clear and very responsive. the call was made over wifi.
happy.
Here is the info from the apk, if that helps. I tried changing my build.prop to match but after that skype just crashes.

Would it not be possible to re-pack the apk with this edited somehow to include the transformer?

I posted a working version without video calls on the previous page eh
Just a side question that I always want to ask.
How do you copy out the apk downloaded from the market your phone to the tablet?
(Like this Skype apk, its not longer visible for the tablet in the android market), but from your phone, you can download it from the market. Where its stored in the phone and how to copy it out?
Thanks for the info!
if you install appinstaller from the market it has a backup feature that stores your selected .apk file on your sd card in a folder called back up i believe. I'm sure there will be other back up apps out there but this one has worked great for me in the past.
Just got notified of a new Skype version on my tab. Seems like maybe they've allowed Honeycomb installs... anybody tried it?
Ye. Just installed. NO Video. Better UX imho

Larger than Winamp (7MB as opposed to 3MB once installed)
How did you get the lockscreen commands working? I had nothing. I'd maybe use it then as it does look nice, but Winamp has a better widget, plus lock screen.
It is force closing on my desire using gingervillian... any ideas?
it is working on my Viewpad 10s not optimal but useble..
Mine keeps saying "application not installed". I'm using oxygen 2.0.3. Any ideas?
I cant get it to install. I says application not installed everytime. I read somewhere that i has to do with the fact that i installed the older leaked version. How do i remove the old version completely?

Yes. That would be nice.
Not good... tried a few things.. looks ok .. uninstalled
buggy on oxygen 2.0.3
I really liked the interface though it is quite minimal so it's a shame that:
interface is slow to load and lags (not just on first load)
scrobbling gets very confused (last.fm doesn't know what to do and flashes scrobbling notification repeatedly).
uninstalled.
edit
downloaded a different version from some forum after reading an article about syncing music with latest music app. seemed to work very smoothly indeed.
I installed the one from here: Official Android Music 3.0 Beta! Get It Now!.
It works fine with the MIUI 1.4.8. But I'm missing some features like sleep timer, editing ID3-Tags. But I like the interface.
Is there a way of making this the default music app and having it work with the HTC Lockscreen? I Like it other than that.
I don't like it at all. It looks quite cheap compared to the older version... and compared to other players, including the stock HTC music player. Also, why so laggy?
thanks for this...

Now that the netflix app is officially out for android (but only for supported phones), is there any way to make it work on the Shift before it's officially a supported device?
Using the attached apk, which is the market release, I can log in and view my queue. I haven't gotten a video to work yet, but I'm in the process of checking.
tldr;
App works on Evo Shift, so far. I am on CM 7.3.1 running ScaryKernel 1.8.
Edit:
Unfortunately, I cannot get a movie to play. I can choose a movie and it goes to the red loading screen but the movie will not start. Loads to black screen with a second of noise then crashes back to the Netflix app home screen.
There is the possibility that my data connection is at fault. I have no wifi connection where I am and my 3G speeds are lackluster here in mid-Michigan. I will try more later when I have a steadier connection.
Ok. The apk I had found wouldn't load, thought it was an issue with compatibility. But it looks like it'll work with the version you posted, thanks.
It doesn't quite seem to work to play videos. I can hear sound, but no video. I tried it on 3G and on the WiFi here at work (26 down).
Same issue here on 4g, 3g, and wifi. It seems to do everything except streaming. The video and audio begin to load and then crashes.

What ROM are you using?
I'm using CM7 and it doesn't work and I have flash 10.3
Just get audio, no video and quits out after ten seconds
I'm using MIUI and adobe flash 10.3, no dice. App opens then just sits on a white screen.

Mind posting your methods for getting the app to work?
http://techland.time.com/2011/05/13/netflix-for-android-workaround/
1) Download ES File Explorer (Or any other root file editor) *** I used File Manager in Cyanogen Mod because ES File Explorer would not work
2) In ES File Explorer, go into Setting > Root Settings and enable both check boxes
3) Navigate to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ (just in case)
4) Open & edit /system/build.prop
5) Change the following lines to make your phone think it is an HTC G2:
--ro.product.model=HTC Vision
--ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
OR
--ro.product.model=Nexus S
--ro.product.manufacturer=samsung
6) Reboot the phone
7) Install the netflix apk (if you haven't already)
Enjoy

Enjoy Friends!!!
Anyone confirm this working? Does it affect anything else?
I can't get it to work. Every time I try to change the build.prop and then reboot, it reverts back to the original file. I got it to catch using ES, but it still doesn't work. I try playing, and it does the same thing as before. Sound (shaky), no video.
I did the mod to build.prop above (just the HTC Vision one since the other was already there) and checked that the flash was updated to newest version of 10.3.
It worked fine for me so long as I did not use the Resume on the first page after login and didn't try to skip to far forward during playback (just skip a little at a time or let it play through).
I used it on wifi in my house to play Ron White - They Call Me Tater Salad all the way through (a little under an hour) and played another while on 4G and had no issues other than those above. 3G seems worthless (maybe if you get a really good connection)...my usual connection is sloowww.
Overall - great video and sound...probably even better with a headset...
Edit: Evo(Shift)Nonsense 1.0 rom and no special kernel, just one with Nonsense rom. That being said, I can't address any failures in other roms because I don't know why mine works and others don't...
Also, I included my build.prop (editted with Notepad++ and named buildnf.prop) in the attached zip file...
PS - I have two versions of the build.prop file in my system folder, the original and the modified version and just renaming them back and forth seemed to work even without rebooting. Also, so far I haven't noticed any drawbacks to just leaving modded version in effect.

Could you be more specific about your Rom and Kernel and possibly upload your build.prop that works? Thanks.
I've tried editing my build.prop in every way possible that has been said to work and I cannot get anything to play for more than a second.
The video is loading, begins to play for a second, audio only, then crashes back to the Netflix home screen.
Sorry, meant to include this info in original post (I'll edit it too):

if your contact has the camera icon on them it means they support it. And then you simply tap the video icon next to them and BAM, it works.

Sorry I made the suggestion for tango without actually testing it out. But to get tango to launch without closing you need to have the iconia in portrait with the rotation lock on. However since I do not have a mobile number for my tablet I don't think tango will work

I'm updating Skype now on the market. Says has video now. But says only for selected handsets and SGS is not one of them.
ye, sucks typically skype
This is baffling. If the Nexus S can support it without a front-facing camera, why not the SGS?!
Oh crapas. Its bad enough that they decided not to support one of (if not the most) popular android phone running 2.3 now. What's worse is...
a. DOES NOT SAVE PASSWORD. UGH.
b. I personally think the UI is worse. At least the "Sign-Out" is on the menu bar instead of buried in the "status" menu. But because it does not save password, this really sucks. Would it kill them to put a big red "Turn Off" button somewhere?
c. Seemed less stable, but that might be my phone.
d. I thought that the new "SMS" functionality would mean that Skype is now an SMS client, which would combine messaging functions into one program. Add a dialler into it, and it could be kick-ass. But this is NOT SMS. This is a text message sent over Skype's network to an SMS gateway to a phone. It costs much more than my SMSs through my carrier, which are true SMS.
I only use Skype on my phone when I'm travelling and need to call international. If this program was better, I would not mind leaving it on all the time. Now, google talk is starting to look better vis-a-vis Skype. If only I could call phones from Google Talk, like I can on my computer...

Its one of those things in which the network is the value. Skype is used for international business and communication. It works better than Google Talk (which also is not open I believe) for talk between China and USA. It works for making cheap international computer to phone calls.
But yes...the company does suck. They can't provide chat customer service...and they're a communications company. Also interface is only so-so.
I NEED Skype on my phone...if no Android version I would get an iPhone. Only other way to call USA from China (without paying huge rates) is to activate VPN and use Google Talk. And that option only started 2 months ago. And I can only call a computer, not a phone with Google.
Fring and Nimbus, IMO, are no better than Skype and don't have desktop clients.

How exactly is it better for talk between China and USA? It's just like any video call software out there. Windows live messenger/yahoo/google/apple/logitech all work, to name a few.
And for phone calls, it's about the most expensive VoIP solution out there.
I use voip.ms, which is cheaper and works with open protocols. With my ATA I can call with a real phone, with my computer turned off. Works on android too.

Strange. I use quite frequently GTalk (video conf) and have no issues. The other party uses a PC so desktop. Apart from quite low audio quality originating from my side I can say all else works good.
edit: forgot to add that yes I'm on stock 3.2

It comes preinstalled with the transformer (called TALK). If not, then Google it
Don't think it's 3.2. Gtalk video chat works fine for me.
Make sure the PC has the video chat plug-in installed.
Hope that helps...
I use Gtalk on my Transformer and my LG G2x all the time with my GF back home (when I travel for work). We've used Tango in the past but it sucks compared to GTalk.
Her phone doesn't have a FFC so it was hard for her to video chat but she has a Netbook with a FFC so I set GTalk on there. I downloaded the Video Chat plugin but was still fishy.
The only way I could get it to work on her netbook was just simply have her sign in to Gmail, then it uses the Web GUI to initiate a video chat. Weird thing is that none of my devices show her as being Video Capable, so she's required to initiate the start of it (which is no big deal).
For what its worth, I use Revolver version 3.2 and whatever Custom Kernel is available in Revolver Parts.
