I charge my new Nexus 4 off my laptop overnight. Once in a while, the phone will stop charging. Sometimes, it only stops for a few minutes but, last night, it stopped around 4am and I woke up to 15% battery. This is using the stock microUSB cable that came with the phone and a Macbook Pro.
did the mackbook go into sleep or was it on all the whole night
try a wall charger instead
Your macbook only supplies 500mA, whereas the wall charger supplies 1.2A, so over twice of that. It's not enough to charge the phone when in use (however, if you turn it off, it will be enough, but it will also charge much slower).

I know my macbook only supplies 500mA but it doesn't even do that. When charging, Battery Monitor shows it's drawing about 260 mA. When it doesn't, Battery Monitor shows it's "Discharging" even though it's plugged in. It happens with my phone on & phone off, with my laptop on & laptop off.

The reason I prefer USB over a wall charger is my power outlet is far away from my bed. My macbook has a long power cord so I can just have a single power cord running along the floor.

It happens both with the macbook awake and asleep.

My transformer died... and now it won't turn on. The battery was low, so it was probably that... but I thought I charged it.
So I now think my cable is no good. the charger is for sure fine.
Does anyone know what pins to test on my transformer cable to check for voltage? it's either the cable or the transformer port itself that's broken.
before dying, the usb transfer worked. but it wouldn't charge...?
anyone know what pins could cause that?

hmmm now it's doing this, which i've never seen before...
no i didn't change the bootloader. has anyone else ever seen this? http://i.imgur.com/6XvQF.jpg
Dead battery sign man, charge it. I never really hear about the cables going bad, the chargers go bad all the time though

Put the charger in a plastic bag and throw it in your freezer for an hour. Take it out and check to see if it works then. It probably will.

Try to trickle charge off computer and see if it is the block. If it is then put in the freezer like Gary said. But my cable stopped working to transfer data so I had too buy a new one. So Maybe it is the cable?

I also find that sometimes the charger goes "dumb" and you have to physically unplug the block from the outlet or surge protector and plug it back in for it to start charging again. Have you tried this? See if you can get it to charge by doing this, otherwise I second testing the USB cable portion only by connecting it to your PC and having it charge through USB although this is very slow and will take a long time. It also won't charge if you're using the tablet since USB doesn't supply enough power, it might also not charge if the tablet is on at all I believe. Just make sure it's off ad leave it on USB overnight.
I think my friend's just had the same exact problem since last week. It just suddenly stopped charging. My friend though his transformer died.
The cable won't charge but if connected to a PC, it will recognize the tablet. It will not trickle charge. I am going to RMA the cable.
Do you have a USB extension cable in series with the TF cable? The charger needs to see a gnd on pin 7 of the USB connector. If it doesn't it will only charge at 5V and it takes days to charge with the TF off. If no extension cable, plug in to a powered computer and leave TF sit for 10-20 hrs with TF off. It will charge slowly, but bring battery level back high enough that the TF charger will not think it is shorted and shut down
Thanks everyone for the help. It trickle charged, and is now at 96%.
i'll keep everyone updated.

I just noticed today, that my HTC phone basically has the same setup. The same charger, then the USB to micro-USB cable. So would it be the same thing to charge with either cable?
I was shuffling with the 2 chargers today.. but if I only need to use one, then that's even better! And I can travel with just 1 charger for my 2 devices too!
Shouldn't be a problem i hardly ever use the correct usb charger for my devices apart from tablets that need the higher power output.
The nexus may not work on the phone charger but the phone should work fine on the nexus charger.

The Nexus7 charger is 5v 2A, look at the HTC amp output if it is 1A it will take longer to charge the Nexus7, if it can even keep up if the unit is on.
I would use the Nexus7 charger for the phone and tablet if you want to cut down on taking chargers while going on trips.
I use the Nexus7 charger on my ET4 and it goes to full charge pretty quick....lol

Yeap you are correct, my phone charger is 1A.
Will using Nexus 7's 2A output charger harm my phone? Or will it just charge my phone faster? (which sounds like a great deal btw:laugh

Another good idea! My HTC's charger cable is longer..
I guess I'll use the Nexus 7's charger with the HTC cable = win
I prefer the Kindle Fire charger or the Playbook or HP touchpad charges took the OEM charger that comes with the Nexus 7
I just got another Playbook charger just for that purpose, it is 6 ft long, much longer than the Nexus charger.

As long as the charger puts out 5v you'll be fine.
Also, stories on xda suggest not gaming on the n7 on low battery while plugged into a charger other the packaged one.
So I'm having some issues charging my tablet. I plugged it in to the charger last night and I noticed this morning that it actually had less battery than last night. So I ran some "tests" and this is what I have concluded. The part of the charger that I actually plug in to the wall doesn't work for some reason. I get no indication from the dock, the battery icon, or the battery widget that I have up. Other plugs seem to work but they don't actually charge the tablet. As in, the battery indicator in the status bar shows a charging icon but the widget still shows that it's not actually charging and its still losing battery. Plugging the charger directly into the tablet instead of my dock does nothing.
If if I have to get to get my tablet sent in, should I just sell my dock and get a Nexus 7? The touchscreen to my tablet doesn't work anyways.

You may have tripped the heat sensor inside the wall wart. Put the wall charger in a plastic sandwich bag, push the air out and seal the bag. Put the bag and wall charger in the freezer for about 30 to 45 min. Remove and leave in plastic bag until charger is back to room temp. Now try it. If you have tripped the heat sensor this action will reset it. There are several threads that discuss this. The wall chargers for the TF101 are heat sensitive.
Hope this helps.

I have tried other wall chargers and they didn't work either so I think the problem is in the tablet, not the charger.

When you plug the tablet into your computer what does the tablet say it is doing? It would take forever to charge but it might show it is charging.
Remember the 101 can charge off of 5volts or 11-15volts. It is the time it takes to recharge that makes a big difference.

OK, so for some reason, when I charge my tablet and use it at the same time it doesn't charge but rather still discharges slowly. I am using the included ASUS transformer because it has a higher output... Supposedly. Anyway, I set my tablet to charge overnight and I wakeup and don't find it charged all the way. What is up?

Try charging it with the device turned off. If it won't charge then, you've probably got some sort of hardware problem (charger, power circuit, battery). Also try a different charger in case yours is dying. And try a different cable... i've definitely had some cheap ones that just wouldn't stay in the socket.

I'll try a different cable. That might be it as the cable is very easy to loosen. The tablet charges just fine.... just not fast enough. Reminds me of the old usb car chargers. The output would be too little compared to what the phone is using and it would discharge at a slightly slower rate.
Ok first of all this is freaking terrible, I was using a cheap charger instead of my expensive charger and I had my hotspot on and the charger couldnt handle it so the phone just turned off, now it doesn't charge with any cable but it does indicate that is charging but its not, its draining. Yes I took the battery and swapped it with another s4 but the battery still works. I was litterally hustling but now I have to spend money to fix this. What is going on?

Try replacing the battery or charger check if it works.. And battery does drain while charging if u continue using the phone.. Keep the phone idle with data/hotspot off.. If its charging then ur phone is normal and you don't need to replace anything.. And yeah use a proper charger.. Don't try to charge it from laptop/pc USB.. It won't give proper results to come to a conclusion.
Hit thanks if I helped!

It's interesting how can people even do this ? we buy 500-600$ phone and then charge with a ****ty 3-4$ , from what i've heard it's so wrong to charge with a cheap charger as it can screw up the whole mainboard due to it's quality and low power output (lower than original charger)

Charging the phone thru a computer USB port is slower based on the output (500 mA) compared to the original charger that came with the phone (2.0 A)
