It would be nice if you describe display quality - viewing angles, panel type (is it IPS) how it performs in sunlight. Is minimum brightness good for reading in dark conditions? Thanks!

Viewing angles are a subjective issue, personally when i pick up my mobile device and look into it, it's always straight in front of me, so that's all i want, but if you have a viewing angle of over 45 degrees like the Tab, all you get is people on the bus, train or plane looking sideways to see what you're looking at
I'm based in England at the moment, they don't have that much sunlight and even less direct sunlight
First impressions, it feels to plasticky, not like it's price suggests that it should, not as bad as an X10, but almost.

How is the call quality/ease of use.. Does the tab "feel" swift?
Hello guys,
Thanks for the initial question. I will cover this question in the video review.
I need more points of focus for the review.

Like if you have had chance to use the ipad, maybe like how does it compare value wise? As I think how much it costs £599 is putting me off, but if it is worth it compared to other tablets then I would consider it more

Wouldn't know about call quality as it's only owned by an engineer that comes into our office, he doesn't have any problems as far as i've heard, but as with other threads here just don't expect it to fit into you jacket or trouser pocket, one it's to big and another it's to heavy to be comfortable.
You may have visited the dell streak forum, or heard of how fragile the dell streak lcd screen is? because of it's large size the body flexes but LCD's by their very nature cannot flex and they snap. Well just look at the size of the LCD on the Tab, and the body of the Tab is made of plastic and (not titanium as per streak) to save weight, this by it's very design will make it more suceptible to breakage, (the body will flex under pressure the LCD will not) = ££££££

Well the ipad and the Tab are two completely different entities, one is a bookreader trying to be a netbook pc, the others a smartphone with obesity problems. They shouldn't be compared IMO.

Similar to all owners i would think! why did samsung insist on utilising such a large bezel around the screen? therebye turning a 7' screen device into one more akin to a 10' without any benefits of a 10'?, and adding nothing to the looks of the device at the same time.

Lol yeah I get the point, what I was more curious was in relation to the size, like is 7" too small to get a full web experience? Is it too big to carry round yet too small to use around the home? etc

As in other posts! you will not carry this around on your pocket, unless you want to break it! You might try a large overcoat with a very wide collar, if the pockets big enough and you want to look like the FBI everywhere you go.

Thanks for trolling another thread entirely off the rails.
To the OP:
A few things that I'd like to see discussed. Firstly how does it feel to type on it ? I've seen in a few first-impression pieces that it feels good (like a galaxy S in landscape) but it'd be great to get the feelings of a regular user. Also, some shots of the keyboard in action would be nice.
Secondly, can you toss some 720p video on there and show us how it looks. It never looks the same in video as in person, but it'd give us an idea of how the screen does as far as contrast and colour vibrancy is concerned.
Finally, how does the device feel to you ? Does it feel to you like you could carry it in a pocket all day ? Does it meet your expectations for speed/ease of use ?
GL with the video, hope to see it soon!
It is maybe off topic, but ... here goes :
- What release of Android is running ? Same as the one on Galaxy S device ?
- Does this android release supports multiple Exchange sync accounts (like HTC Desire & Desire Z do) ?
- Does it have 2 SIM card slots ? (saw that somewhere, don't remember ... where). If so, is it one for voice plan, second one for data plan ?
- Does it come with a USB host port (or the hw to take care of it) ?
Thanks.
Does it play 1080p files (mkv & flash) or does i only output 1080p..?
I got my hands on this last week to try out for a good half hour, and i loved it. The size was great, and great to watch movies on.
Looking forward to it. Release in Norway is 21. okt )
could it be confirmed if the Tab is going to require Kies in the same way as the Galaxy phones, e.g. for firmware updates
i assume that there will be no difference between this and their phones, but as Kies is software that i truly dislike, i am living in hope that it does not.

Yes, it is confirmed by Samsung already. In their official site, it says in the "PC connectivity" section "KIES". Sorry. I know, I hate that application with a passion myself...
If you have time, it would probably interest many people if you'd manage to try some popular apps from the market and see how they act with the increased resolution. We all probably have out own top10 lists for software, but I think browsing appbrain for most popular and trying a few of them would give people some idea how far that compatibility is.
(I, personally, would love to see how WidgetLocker, Beautiful Widgets and Launcher Pro work on that, but unfortunately at least the first two ain't free.
But more generally, how do widgets work on that screen? What I've gathered from the pictures is that the Tab has a FIVE column display (instead of the traditional 4) on the homescreen. How do widgets work with that? does a 4x4 widget scale to full size, or does it live a "column" free. Also, how many rows does the screen have?
EDIT: oookay, I don't know why these two posts became separate, this was supposed to be an edit to that earlier...
Actually thats a good idea.
I even forget that widget locket etc are even apps these days! But yes that'd be good to see if they scale up or still work properly on the big screen.
I imagine beutiful widget and switchpro you could make them bigger with launcherpro+ if they won't scale up by themselves, same with any other widgets, but it'd be good if they did it for free! However I think the 'grid' on the Tab is bigger anyway, so 4x2 widget would cover more space, but then it appears to have more rows too, so they might still appear small
Anyways, if you have any paid for apps on your main smartphone, you should be able to put the same market account on the Tab and download them again, so that's one way around paying twice just to demo them.
A few things I'd like to see:
- Spotify in action if possible.
- Proper comics and hos they scale to the screen and if it's easy or hard to read them (The Walking Dead for example.)
- A bit more on reading eBooks in different lights.
- In-depth look at the calendar and how flexible it is.
- If possible, how the accessories (like the keyboard) work.
- How it handles different resolutions of video.
Thank you for accepting suggestions!
With the release of the limited edition, I'm a little left in the dark about what was said and seen earlier year. Anyone at Goggle I/O that can get some answers would be great.
1. Will the production edition be released with any SD card (mircoSD, SD, etc) or USB (standard USB, Micro USB) support? None are available on the limited edition.
2. We see the limited edition released with the Tegra2? Will the standard GT10 have the Tegra2 or another CPU?

This is the second post I've seen mentioning this. A PLS screen IS an LCD screen. I'm not sure I follow the concern, unless you're referring to something that specifically referred to it as NOT bing PLS, or being plain old TFT, or something like that.
Ok, I see that there is a TFT LCD and a PLS LCD (IPS type). I have removed that question.
PLS is a type of LCD TFT screen. For more information - use Wikipedia.

No, but PLS = LCD. PLS is a sub-type of an IPS screen, which is a type of LCD screen. And no, the Zoom doesn't have a PLS screen. PLS is a Saumsung technology. I don't believe the Zoom is even IPS. I think it's just plain old TFT (perhaps TN?).
No one seems to have an answer for the SD or USB debate. I thought I wait for this but I think its time to just get a xoom.
From what I heard here at IO, the only limited thing about the tablet is the back. Samsung is expecting to go to market with the current hardware specs including no SD card and no USB.

Yeah it can run TV apps. I think if the 10.1 is such a disappointment then I'm heading straight to the Asus.
I'm definitely in the same camp. It doesn't make sense to me to release a tablet at this point without an SD slot.. This just seems like a huge omission. I may have to set up some alerts on nowinstock.net alerts for the ASUS..
just out of curiosity guys, what do u store in ur devices that requires more than 16gb? The way I see it, it suffice my everyday use and discipline me to manage my files.

you can store 20,000 songs on the new google music so thats not an issue

And, yes I do own most of it in CD.
personally can't see the need to store tonnes of media directly on my tablet all of the time, got around 5Tb shared over wifi at home and i'm never away from home long enough to need more than a decent (couple of gig) music play list and a couple hours of video on my portable at any one time.

But there's no way that's a "plain jane" TN TFT, because they show pictures of it at some fairly extreme angles, and it holds the image quality fine. We can't tell if it's PLS, but PLS is essentially a type of IPS, and IPS is essentially a type of TFT, which is a type of LCD. Even if it's "just" IPS, IPS is still good... that's what's on the Ipad2, and on the Transformer. Based on those pictures, I'd say it's at least IPS. From what I've read, it sounds like PLS is only marginally better than most other IPS panels. But it's also cheaper to make, so it's in Samsung's interest to use a PLS screen, if they have PLS screens of that size ready.
In the end, I wouldn't worry about it... the pictures speak for themselves. It holds its image quality even at wide angles, regardless of the letters used to describe the panel.
Finally found it:

Now THAT'S how you make a commercial, Samsung.
If you want to attack the iphone, you do something like this first, but first show someone watching video on the iphone first, then drop the note on top of it.
A 'why do this..... if you can do this'.......'
That will work 100x times better than the 'Iphone users are ninnyheads' commercials you are pushing.

I didn't care for the Superbowl ad at all but this one is great. The anti-iPhone ads were fun to begin with but the Superbowl ad took it too far and was just silly. I hope they continue with this type of ad which shows the strengths of the device in a nicely understated way.

Found a longer and even better version of the commercial.
They totally should have used this commercial in the super bowl.
I like this video, but just curious... Who else watched it on their Note? For me, no other video I've seen has so exemplified the grayscale rendering issue as this one. Looks horrendous.
The longer one is great. A brilliant choice of music; so much better than than the vulgarity of the Superbowl ad. The Superbowl was a missed opportunity but I hope they give this ad a decent amount of airplay. It should be used internationally as well. The international ads ,like this one which has been getting a lot of airplay in India, are decent enough but I like the above ad better. It exudes class and restraint while still showing off the capabilities of the device. It's one of the best electronics ads out there.
Very nice, far better than their other commercials...

For me when I played it using the YouTube app and while streaming it using the default video player the grayscale issue is very visible but the blacks are black. If I play it on the browser using flash I see no grayscale issue but the blacks are gray. Haha my screen turned greenish then back to normal like a 50 times while typing this.

Can the resolution of the screen be modified like a computer monitor? I'm wondering because we could increase battery life of the device if the GPU doesn't need to push as many pixels. I'm assuming its hard set though.
I'm no expert but I would expect the display controller is preset to only drive the display in its native resolution.
Even if you could change it I doubt it would save power. The same number of pixels would need to be sent to the display. You'd just be changing where the work was done. The display controller would have to use more power to scale the image rather than driving 1:1 to the display.

Please do not comment if you have nothing to add to a thread. Yes an LCD screen can not change the amount of pixels it outputs, its hardware after all, but the amount of pixels being processed by the gpu can potentially be changed and then interpolated to fit the native resolution of the screen. I was just interested in what people think that have more experience then I have with the device.

Once again, thank you for your rude opinion that has contributed nothing. If you don't agree with what I'm asking about that is fine, just skip over the thread.
Would be interesting to see if this was possible
I looked into this quite a bit when trying to get better game performance. Changing DPI settings doesn't change the resolution. I'd really like a 1/2 res option, which would be 1280x800.... perfect for games. I couldn't find any way to do this, and I think it would need to be implemented at the kernel/graphics driver level. There was a post on the N10 gaming thread, where someone had started some sort of Google petition to implement features like this. The link from that thread had far more info than I can provide, but I got the impression that this isn't a trivial modification.
Bioorganic, can you post a link to the thread you mentioned? I plan on looking into tackling it myself if I get time, but if someone has already attempted I don't want to recreate the wheel. Thanks in advance.

Screen DPI =/= Actual Resolution. In short, changing screen DPI is basically changing the size of text and buttons, but not the general resolution those said things run at.
Display mode of choice?
Just wandering what screen mode everyone is using? I have it on the professional/adobe one at the mo but I don't have any scope for comparison. Could someone who by chance also has an iphone tell me which one is most 'accurate.'?
Also, why I'm here, do people's gs4 have raised sides as opposed to the flush ones on the gs3?
I don't think whether accurate or not is not so important. The color is very comfortable, wonderful for the eyes which nobody complains so far, that's it.
Even most of people using S4 use Standard mode, not professional mode.
I don't have a gs4 but I think movie mode is the most accurate. Also if it does have raised edges that's a good thing because it means the edge will hit the ground first instead of the screen. My Droid Charge (gs1) has this, and it has survived every face down drop, although the raised edges are pretty dented.

I use Movie Mode, it's by the most accurate and pleasing to the eye.
Yes it is a lot more de-saturated than standard mode but only because standard is disgustingly over saturated!
Use movie mode for a few days and you'll love it, then change to anything else and it'll look horrible.
P.S I have a colour calibrated Mac and Movie mode is still more saturated than my Mac screen.
