Since at&t is buying out T-Mobile, just Google it I'm not posting links, is this the true end of our phones because at&t said all 3G phones will need to be upgraded to support their towers and speed they will provide. In addition what are everyone's thoughts on the matter?? It seems like we'll all min the USA have to buy new phones BC they probably wont do the upgrade for free xD

You don't have to change anything unless ATT drops 2G.
I don't think it will be the end of our phones the 3G upgrades may come over the air or we may have to go old school & actually have to get firmware upgrades in the shop. I don't really think T-Mobile is much slower than At&t, after all, T-Mobile pushed the GSM network in the US, which made everyone else play catch up, since GSM was already in the EU for several years prior. Anyway, as long as we have XDA & the great people giving us Froyo & Gingerbread for our G1/Dreams & MT3G(which we were never meant to have in the 1st place), we will never be too far behind...I hope.

Its not necessarily a software issue because At&t said that themselves that all 3G phones will eventually have to be replaced to handle the new network.. AKA moving everyone to 4G and more expensive plans lol..
If they're going to pay for the upgrades themselves im all fine and for it bring on the new phones for development, and they keep our plans i will be extremely happy!
But if we have to get new phones and new contracts a lot of people will probably drop them. I know i cant get the deal i have now ANY where else for as keep.. Unlimited data, texts and 750 shared mins bt two phones for 100 bucks a month. not bad in my opinion.

Agreed, 100%. If the ride is still good, stay on it. If get start getting bad, jump ship.
Read unofficial t-mo news. Front page. Great info and perspective there. U might be able to get a new phone now and run the contract out before it affects u. I'm getting the HTC pyramid and riding this out regardless

I wet into a AT&T store today and there data line for "unlimited" is $45 a month with out tethering it was around $65-$70 with tethering (guys at the store were as helpfull as a bricked phone and didnt tell me much), (i currently pay $40 with tethering) ontop of your standared plans... to get a plan like yours (also mine) would cost us around $150 or more, im just hopin that we will be able to keep our plans how we have them due to the "grandfathering" law, not sure if it is covered from a buy out though...

It is when companies own the Supreme Court.
So I am about to get booted off of my parents plan (college kid) come may. Would it be a smart option to buy a tmobile plan right now hoping that their prices wont increase with the potential merger? I have heard their plans are cheaper..
I am using an unlocked g1 on at&t right now- and I havent had much problem with at&t- I think all cell phones companies are low grade scammers... I do not use any data, just wifi, and probably text 500/month, talk 500/month..

I talked to a few tmobile people and they all say that the plan you currently have will remain the same price IF the merge happens
stick wit tmobile. tmobile will still carry out their prices. the two companies merged. which is great cuz HTC and other phone companies wont have to make exclusive phones for Tmobile etc. it will be available to both companies. so we get benefit of the new phones.
If noticed on alot of 3g and 4g phones are already set up for at&t aswell as t-mobile so im really not seeing a issue with the buy out except maybe a new sim card.

Well actually I started with cingular back like 6 years ago before they were bought by at&t.. And i am still using the same cingular SIM card =) I love it, probably one of the few cingular sim cards left.. so perhaps tmobile peps will keep their tmobile sim cards when the merger is offic.
From what they're saying when the towers get swapped it will be lte service and the current 3g 4g phones won't be compatible. I guess we'll see. All speculation at this point

Welk consider this..
Att phones currentlt work in tmobile and tmobile works on att so with that said if att changes anything they will cause priblems on there own network and phones. I dont for see any problems as ive already said before look in youre APN's you can already choose att or tmobile as a carrier atleast on all my phones

Tmobile sim cards suck I will move to a att one myself. I never had a problem with them but tmobile ive gone through three in less then a year.

With the merger no one needs to upgrade phones. If ppl read tmo's news, at&t pretty much just wants tmo's 4g capable towers and servers. If the merger Goes threw at&t will pretty much be selling world phones (phones that's will support tmos 17 & 21 hundred 3/4g bands and att bands).. all in all they just want the real 4g capable towers tmo has ..

MetroPCS will allow you to use some CDMA handsets from other providers, yes. But you don't get data; you'll have to figure out how to do that yourself. I know plenty of folks who put OG Droids and EVOs on Ghettro, though I don't know why... 1xRTT is pretty miserable, way too slow for a real smartphone... and their LTE isn't compatible with Verizon LTE handsets afaik.

It's the same principle, each carrier runs their network on different frequencies, except most who use the same technology also use the same texting/phone frequencies.
If Metro had the same 3G bands as Verizon, a Verizon phone would work fine.
MetroPCS doesn't have EV-DO at all.
Yes they do. if you are using their latest .prl (3025) and your phone is 3G capable, you will get 3G in the rare places where it is available. i live in nyc and did not get 3g on metro unless i went to Brooklyn . i used the speedtest app and it got 300ish kbps on an evdo network. not bad speed for metropcs, but very slow compared to what im using now.

There are two stores around me that do it. $50 to get your phone on there network. Only one of them does the data. Not sure how much they charge. But it's not officially done by metro. It's individuals who work in the store and the money goes to them.

They are an MVNO of T-Mobile. To be honest, I would just go with T-Mobile's monthly 4G plans instead of Simple but to each his own. Some people swear by them.

What's double data. I typically use around 150 gb a month. That's why I like unlimited.
I met a guy recently on Simple Mobile and he seemed happy, I'm thinking of switching soon. I mean, unlimited 3G data, text and talk for $40 a month including international texting? Considering my phone only does 3G (Vibrant) anyways...
But, I also don't use that much data.

They have a promo where if you order 2GB for 30$ you automatically get 4GB and, pay for 5GB ($50) get 10GB, and so on....
ALSO: To anyone thinking of Simple mobile go with the higher priced option. The 40$ dollar option doesn't give you access to 4G speeds (T-Mobile's HSPA+ in this case) even if your phone is only 3G capable you will see a speed boost.

There's a newer article out. Reporting it is indeed finished and should be announced today. I'll find the link. But apologies if this doesn't belong I see much more "off topic threads" here Luke I want a GS3 blah blah figure this is somewhat on topic. As the OG EVO WAS a Sprint exclusive and so at one point every EVO was configured or running on Sprint. While I'm sure many of them (me for one) are still on Sprint and this could have a large impact on people. Again if I violated anything a MOD can surely close this or move it to where it belongs.

I think this is a great thing for Sprint on the short term, kind of skeptical if it will be good for us consumers in the long run. I also find it somewhat sad that one company that has some sizeable debt, has just purchased a controlling share in another company with even greater debt, and I believe must of had to make this deal on credit.... Wish I could do that ****, dem bastards... :banghead:

Yea I'm leaning the same way after more looking into. Hopefully this can be the influx of cash Sprint needs to.build the new networks faster and start drawing more customers. I just hope they keep the simply everything plans. I think that's a big plus for them. If they can't use this to get going again then nothing will.

This^ Unlimited everything (besides land line calls) is amazing. Not to mention their plans are cheaper. The only thing left, IMO, to get more people to move over is to get more 4g coverage. I know they are expanding more...and I just heard I'm getting 4g by me which I didn't think would come for a few more years so that's a plus for me

Agreed most people agree the up front cash will allow them to build out the LTE network faster. Which is good. Hopefully the broader the 4G range 3g speeds will improve as well since less traffic.

BTW, this is LONG from 'finished', this is just the announcement of the agreement... there's still a LONG due diligence period that is only now starting along with required regulatory reviews. I doubt this will be 'finished' until 2nd quarter 2013, if not later.

You get what you pay for. Sprint's 4G is lacking and so is their 3G speeds. Getting consistent performance is out of question. Yeah the data is unlimited but that's it. Verizon has family share plans for $40/phone and shared data starting at $50/month. You could spend anywhere from $15-35 a month depending upon your data usage but Verizon at least in Los Angeles is worth every penny. Sprint will be nowhere near that kind of coverage for the next couple of years and I am tired of signing contracts based on promises of better data.

Verizon locks down bootloaders worse than Sprint has ever contemplated, and just wait till you go a few gigs over your "allowance" and get hit with the 2-3 hundred dollar overage. I read on Engadget today that Sprint bought like 50.8% of Clearwire. I wonder if our how that affects this deal

Whatever works for you man. I guess Sprint has Independence covered like a blanket I guess. BTW, each phone on the shared plan with Verizon gives you a good idea where you stand on data. If you feel you're about to go over, you can go to the next level.
I've been with Sprint for a long time and really wish the 4G coverage was better but when you lose to metropcs in a major market then that is a problem.

I'm pretty sure Softbank wanted Sprint to be in control of clearwire as per the agreement. But like it was mentioned the Grand ole Government still has to give the ok for this so it'll be at least 6+ months.
I also have to side with Jamie here I had Verizon for a while (pre-smartphone days) and their service was great but lately as a huge Root fan I'd never go back. They are locking down the bootloaders on so many of the best devices like he SG3 and another one I'm forgetting but they have plans to lockdown more in the future. And while Sprint isn't the biggest Root supporter they at least leave that door unlocked. nd once they get the LTE network built out speeds WILL improve, we already have it here in Baltimore and my buddies Gnex is pulling a consistent 20-25mb/sec which for us Sprint users is Freaking a god send lol. Combine that will never having to worry about Data which I use about 5-7 gb/month I'm sticking right there with them. Until they are a huge success or die off lol

Cool story! I dropped sprint strictly because coverage in my area was very spotty. I have no regrets about it and if they fixed the network I'd go back in a heart beat...I just got tired of hearing about how my market was always next in line...blah blah blah. I also have no issue with verizon. The phone I picked was easily unlocked... that is more research based..all carriers should have a Google phone that can be unlocked. Data is not an issue...WiFi is every where anyways...even at the gym. I pay just as much now as I did with sprint... but dont drop calls...and since I am military and have a wife at home with my kids...an on demand call is a must. I also know Verizon has the better freq. Band... sure in the higher MHz you will get faster speeds..but the coverage area isn't as big...its all give and take. I am rooting for sprint...but just got tired of waiting....I love capitalism and choice...so I switched to who I feel deserved my money!

All very good reasons to switch. Yea I'd rank Verizon over ATT&t but the those locked bootloaders. I havent checking in a while but the locked sgs3 was a huge ordeal being locked. That kinda thing makes me mad. It's OUR Devices not the carriers and if I want to root then I have that right.

I hate how Verizon doesn't support gsm phones, I can't upgrade my plan without loosing my unlimited data, and I can't activate any of the manufacturer version of a device because they only support CDMA.
How is everyone's satisfaction with T-Mobile? That's the only carrier I can go to and I'm in Massachusetts. If anyone can give me a good idea on what the difference in service is like that would be great.

i agree, i live in kentucky and i easily use about 6-10gb a month and not having to worry about a data cap is lovely. i have been in a few spotty areas before but for the most part ive always been able to make calls and i havent dropped one yet. ive tried straight talk att here before i went to tmobile and while i did like att service the capped me at 1.5gb and i was only 1 week into the service.
id say look at the places you will be going most and see if tmobile has the coverage there and see if youll be ok with it first, if so make the jump, i did and i havent looked back yet.. im on the $70 unlimited no contract plan
T-No works well in all cities I go to and I have been with them for 7 years or so... check their coverage maps. They are very accurate ...

My wife and I made the switch from Veriz to T-Mob a few months ago.
There is one big overriding rule. In big population centers... T-Mob is just fine. Building penetration is not as good as Verizon though. Driving around through the lesser populated areas (outskirts and countryside), there is very little (read: none) T-Mob data coverage.
We live in Charlotte, NC and here I am completely happy with the service (data speeds are excellent). But just outside of the metro area, I am roaming. On a trip back to Iowa, the only place we had T-Mobile data was around Des Moines. Outside of Des Moines, we were roaming the whole time (even in Iowa City with population over 80,000).
You can roam with voice and text, and that generally works fine.
You can roam on data (small monthly allowances... depends on data plan) but speeds are very (read: painfully) slow.
But, for us it made sense... It saved us over a thousand dollars a year.
My two cents: If you spend your time in big cities... I'd go for it (or at least try a monthly pre-paid plan). There will be a drop off in coverage compared to verizon, but it is completely tolerable in my opinion.
If you live in (or spend a lot of time) in a small town, or you are on the highway, don't do it if you need data.
I'm really happy with T-Mobile coming from sprint. I live in south Florida and I get full bars almost everywhere I go. Data speed is just awesome I get between 8 to 14 mbps. Compare to sprint in a good day 750 kbps. And plans start at $30 which is what I have!

I live in Brooklyn, NYC and tmo has been great....well at least to me. Building penetration is lacking, but I can live with that! My speeds are usually great and the $30 data plan takes care of my needs...so for me its perfect!
I live jus north of Boston, Lynn to be exact and have great service. I work in Needham(out skirts of Boston) which I also get great service. My wife's family lives in the south shore (brockton) where the coverage is not so great. I go to the cape every year and the service there is not so great. Both those areas are mainly switching from E to 1 bar on H. Hope this info helps you. Good luck.
Also my wife and friend have att and they get good service jus about everywhere. I don't know how the data speeds are for att but they have better coverage and more expensive than T-Mobile.

I'm on the south shore and recently switched from vzw to tmo. Factually, the network is worse but there hasn't been a time when I couldn't use the phone. Data speeds are fine and I'm not missing messages or calls. My low usage(save for data) didn't justify the exuberant cost that vzw charges and the limits were annoyingly restricting.

I made the same decision as you last month and here is what I did.
I bought the n4 and the T-Mobile 30/month plan while I still had my Vzw account. I then tested the network and data in my two week return period Google gives. I then decided it was good and canceled my Vzw account.
Once I canceled Vzw and was on tmobiles 70/month unlimited plan, I started having issues that I personally couldn't live with. Tmobiles data speed are excellent (7-42mbps) however their signal is very spotty and my phone was constantly dropping to edge. I could live with this because of the cost savings, however when i noticed I was getting delayed text (sending and receiving) and phone calls not going through, I really started regretting Vzw which was always solid for me. T-Mobile tech support reminds me of the Citibank commercial "this is Peggy" and it sucks!
I then switched to att cause I love the n4, and was able to sign up contract free which I love. Their speeds are a lot slower, but their coverage is very solid. This is when I started actually becoming angry that the n4 didn't support lte since att has lte in the area and tmobile doesn't.
I work in north attleboro ma and this is just my 2 cents. I personally travel for work sometimes and really didn't want to run into no coverage zones with T-Mobile and not be able to roam. Att is not as good as Vzw, so only time will tell. Worst comes to worst I sign on with Vzw again in the future and get their latest and greatest, would have lost unlimited data regardless. Let me know if you need any more advice

Yep. Moved to T-Mobile! Loving it. Love my nexus 4 too
T-Mobile has 4g in my area but hspa+ is fast enough for me. And I always have enough service to send calls and text. Whereas on Verizon it was spotty and only worked some of the time.

Month to month, no contract sounds good to me.
So after discovering that our shiny devices indeed did have true LTE capabilities, many of us were eager to try it out. Some of you Canadians or T-mobile customers were lucky enough to be the first to access the LTE networks when they went online.
My question is directed more towards the Tmo customers, rather than international users as I am no familiar with any other county's rules or regulations.
Aren't you worried that if or when T-mobile finds out you are accessing their LTE network using this mysterious "illegal" device of yours you will get your device blacklisted? I sure would love it if they sent out some sort of warning Free T-mobile txt message or a courtesy phone call letting you know that you're a criminal, prior to the blacklist.
Has anyone encountered anything of this sort? Perhaps anyone have any information to share of this topic?
Also, anyone using only LTE throughout the day, how are the battery and signal?

It is not illegal and im sure tmobile won't be able to do anything to stop it.
So the fact that N4s passed through the FCC without their LTE capability doesn't make the phone a bit taboo?

Nobody's sure whats the deal with n4s lte module. But its there and if you want u can use it. But you going to have to figure it out on your own or ask xda community.
I'm hoping to jump on the LTE wagon as soon as t-mobile lights up our city. I mean, to think NYC, most populated city in America, didn't get first dibs at an upgrade... This is an outrage!

That's cuz of they have exhausted the market there with 3g. They opened lte in markets where they have smaller base of customers but the ability to attract bigger one. I feel your pain as i am in Chicago.
You don't need a phone that's certified by T-Mobile themselves to run it on their network. T-Mobile is a cellular network provider, and has no say on what phones you can and can not use for LTE if you're paying for their service. They tell you the bands you can access with any device capable of connecting to them for a reason. This includes the Nexus 4. The Nexus 4 is 4G LTE capable, and supports T-Mobile's LTE tech. You can tell a rep. yourself that you got it working. They can't do anything about it. Its your phone and if anything, it would be illegal on their part to blacklist your device because you pay for the service, and you're not getting it in full with the device they have sold to you.

If this in fact is the case, then is great news. Somehow I don't think it will settle just like that. Corporations want to sell & sell. Who's going to buy SGS4s or HTCs if we all have LTE in our phones and we are allowed to use it.

T-mobile doesn't want you buying a new phone. They would love to have customers who bring their own phones and pay for their service. In fact that is the whole basis of their new contract free "un" carrier marketing campaign. If the Nexus 4 is capable of running on lte, although they won't provide tech support for it, there is no reason for them to proactively block it.
They don't make much off the devices they sell they make the money off the monthly contract.
Just like Comcast doesn't care what TV you have they just need you to pay that monthly bill.
T-Mobile or the FCC is not going to do a damn thing to the end users. If anyone that's going to get the pointed finger, that'll be Google.
LG and Google tried to hide the fact that the phone is LTE capable, but the OPEN SOURCE community, as gifted as they are, discovered that the device IS capable.
I also called T-Mobile pretending to be interested in buying a Note 2. I was trying to play off that I have T-Mobile's true un-throttled unlimited data currently and asked if I purchased the Note 2 if will be able to access the LTE network with no ramifications/fines/extra hidden fees and the representative said, yes, you will be able to use LTE with nothing effecting your current account.
