Hello guys
I recently unrooted my nexus 7 device because I really want to upgrade to 4.2.1. I tried every possible way. My deice is unrooted, so I tried to update my it from settings, but it goes into custom recovery and saya...

So I said ok, it doesn't work, so I found the most recent update for the nexus 7 and downloaded it, went to custom recovery, found teh file and tried to update it manually.... This is what is said..

I guess my question is.. what can I do from here? I really want to update it soon
Just download the firmware direct from Google and flash it using fastboot. Easiest and most reliable method, though you do need an unlocked bootloader.

Can you please explain in detail?
From Google meaning their website? or from settings on the Nexus 7? and what do you meant by a bootloader? which bootloader should I use?
I'm not sure but i think if you want to take ota it might need stock recovery to install and to update manually from custom recovery I think you need the BIG update from 4.1.2 JO??? to 4.2 JO40C as the update from JO40C to 4.2.1 JOP40D is incremental if I'm not mistaken....also you may need to update clockwork mod

Download the update to your device(it's hosted on these boards) reboot your machine into recovery, and install from zip. It's the way many of us update our devices. There was no need to unroot your device. Your OTA failed to install because of the custom recovery you're using.
I'm using 4.2.1
How do u get the screen to not turn off

I've got the same issue.
CWMRecovery says the same thing when I want to update by OTA.
I tried to install manually the ZIP file (/cache) by copying it in my /sdcard with CWMR but I had the same script.
I'm rooted, in 4.2 (logic) with CWMR 6.0.1.9 no touch.
Do I have to restore stock recovery or a sideload flash (or fastboot) would work ?

Follow the above link. It walks you through downloading a factory image from google and using fastboot to install it, regardless of what you may have done to your device. Also, if you are doing this, you can go ahead and use the latest image if you want, which puts you at 4.2.
enjoy. :good:

The 4.2.1 OTA update is rolling out now, and I thought it would be a good time to ask what the proper procedure is for rooted devices.
Can we grab the OTA the same way a non-rooted device would? Should we wait for someone to hack together one that can be flashed in recovery? Will we lose root? Custom recovery?
I've never owned a device that gets regular OTAs until the Nexus 10, so I'm not sure what we're supposed to do.
probably the same as what I did with the last update. you will need to find the zip file save it to your internal memory and you should be able to flash in recovery as long as you don't have a custom rom. Doubt that you will lose root as I didn't on the last one and this update is much smaller.
Good question Matthileo !
Where can we find the update zip ?

My devices are always rooted with an unlocked boot loader and running the stock rom. I've always done it the following way, and never ran into any problems:
1) Download the OTA file (zip file) once the URL is out.
2) Boot into fastboot.
3) Use fastboot to boot to a clockworkmod recovery image (I usually leave the stock recovery on my phone, and just boot to CWM when needed rather than flashing it)
4) install the downloaded OTA file
5) Use CWM's built-in feature to preserve root
I just did the above for the N4 with no problems.

Its happened to a lot of us, there seems to be an issue with the update setting permissions once its finished patching. No solution yet.

Yea, I just found the other thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016272&page=7 which I also contributed to.
I've always had luck with Voodoo OTA Root Keeper (available via Google Play) for my Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, and now my Nexus 10 today for both the 4.2 and 4.2.1 updates.
It failed on me once for the initial 4.1 on my GalNex, but I think that was mostly my fault due to not reading the instructions.

It seems to be failing for some, including myself, I've reverted to stock so I'm just waiting on the update to show up again so I can try again.
I tried many, many times flashing it via adb sideload from stock recovery, and reverting to factory images several times but that was a no go.

If you look through the thread, there is a download link for the update, that's how I did it
The most probable reason you're having the issue if the MD5 checks out is that the OTA updater doesn't seem to work properly with it (I think that if you were using 4EXT recovery you would be okay.) However, that doesn't mean you can't install the OTA; you just have to find it and install it manually.
This post has the directions that, as I recall, worked for me (I'm not on Venom at the moment):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35645890&postcount=157
Get the update out of /cache, put it on /sdcard, boot to recovery, turn off signature verification in CWM recovery's advanced menu, then try flashing.

If you are on cwr the updater won't work. You either have to get ext4 recovery or go to the link below and download the update. Then you will be able to flash the update through cwr.

The 4.2.2 update for my Nexus 7 came OTA today, but did not complete due to an unspecified error. Now my N7 says there are no updates available when I have it check, but according to my "About Tablet" screen, I'm still at 4.2.1. I tried manually installing the update, but to no avail.
I'm using ClockworkMod 6.0.2.3 as my recovery tool, and the name of the file I used to attempt to manually update is 6ece895ecb23.signed-nakasi-JDQ39-from-JOP40D.6ece895e.zip. I also attempted a factory reset to start over, but this has been unfruitful as well. Same with installing the 4.2.2 ROM through ROM Manager v5.5.2.1 and downgrading to 4.1.
Results from manual updating through ClockWorkMod Recovery:

Wow... this hasn't been covered ad nauseum already. You didn't even have to search... there are already multiple current threads in which it is clearly and concisely laid out.
Its because you modified the system. The update is a patch- if any of the files that it must verify before patching are not 100% stock, it will fail. Flash the stock image.

Nexus not boot up. its stock on boot loader
If you are trying to perform an upgrade to 4.2.2, then you would need the boot image from the version of the ROM you are upgrading from.
If you already have 4.2.2 (see your sig), why would you be trying to install an update package?
If you already have 4.2.2, but a custom kernel, you can flash the boot.img file from the Google distro a bunch of different ways, here's 3:
1) fastboot (unlocked bootloader):
- fastboot flash boot boot.img
2) ADB (with custom recovery running)
- adb push boot.img /sdcard/boot.img
- adb shell dd if=/sdcard/boot.img of=/dev/block/platform/sdhci-tegra.3/by-name/LNX
3) restore only the boot image from a prior Nandroid backup (twrp)
If you want decent help, you really ought to state:
- is your bootloader unlocked?
- do you have a custom recovery installed?
- if Yes (to the above question), did you make any Nandroid backups prior to the custom kernel install?

You are going to run into a huge amount of trouble if you don't understand the difference between bootloader and boot partition.
Perhaps it's just a language thing, but understanding the difference means the difference between a tablet which survives and one that becomes a brick.
good luck

Android Central has the log change. It's bug fixes really.
Also, in this thread a user states that apparently only with the full 5.0.1 can you install it with CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...p-nvidia-shield-tablet-ota-android-5-t2982677
You will lose root and CWM after the reboot but those took about 3 minutes to get back .. easy peasy. I'm now at 5.0.1 on my shield with root and CWM.
Cheers.
Hello aegern,

So here's what I did:
Download the full OTA then reboot to CWM (assuming your rooted + recovery) and unmount system partition ( I believe all others were unmounted) and then delete system, data, cache partitions respectively. Then flash the OTA zip followed by latest supersu.
Just tested this method and I have a rooted 5.01 32GB LTE US model working flawlessly. Even managed to take out the top spot in Hwbot Prime for the Shield (woops to newb for links I see lol)

So, did it work for you? I've tried the file in both this link and the official update and get the same thing with both. I'm still on KK and I can't install either the 5.0 or the 5.01 updates. I get the same "this is an ardbeg" error with any update I try to flash, and I'm flashing the full files, not the incremental updates. In fact, I have two tablets (both lte) and I updated the first one to 5.0 a week ago, no problem, but the new one I just bought, I can't even though I'm using the same files (cwm and update). I'm stumped.
Bah. nm. I went back and reinstalled the recovery from here again, http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi.../recovery-cwm-recovery-nvidia-shield-t2848064. Flashed 5.01 just fine. Not sure where I got the other recovery.

Hi dgjenkins, sorry answer so late. So, answering you first, not, it did not work for me. I actually did give up, the bad was that I tried so many ways to do it that I freezed the tablet and did not start again. Well, looking out there, I found this amazing video who saved my tablet of bust it again the wall and start from the original firmware.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GsMo1tPlIFU
I did intal the Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Copy the image files in to the Minimal ADB and Fasboot directory c:\Programs Files (x86)\Minimal ADB and Fastboot
Ope Minimal ADB and Fastboot
-Type: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
-Type: fastboot flash boot boot.img
-Type: fastboot flash system system.img
-Type: fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
-Type: fastboot flash staging blob
-Type: fastboot flash dtb tegra124-tn8-p1761-1270-a04-e-battery.dtb
And done . I can now install the updates from the stock firmware. Maybe I will root it again once a stable way to root the shield tablet appear out there. :cyclops:
Happy Holidays and Thanks for the interest! :good:
Nvidia updates definitely trump Android ones. These days, Google is in the habit of pretending that a nexus 5 camera bug is worthy of a new Android version (that was KitKat) or that an update is a great place to break functionality (App Ops, also with KitKat). Anything that's not a minor version with updates you know you want... Avoid on a non Nexus unless you have a great reason for it.
Manufacturers besides Google, see, they do this thing I like to call quality control. They generally release an OS that is ready for the hardware and software*. Crazy, right?
* unless that hardware is, say, the pen
