My device a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (GT-P5100) does not have a /proc/config.gz. I already rooted my device and searched for it on it's filesystem using root explorer, but no luck. I also tried to extract config.gz from boot.img, also no luck.
From were do I obtain /proc/config.gz file now? Or can anyone upload it for a GT-P5100 with 16GB + 3G and WiFi?
My final approch is to build a custom Kernel with the UDLFD driver enabled to use my DisplayLink device connected to my full HD TV as monitor
My DisplayLink works fine with a OpenWrt router but I like to use it with my tablet.
Samsung doesn't enable that option in the kernel on any device. If you read the readme included in the kernel source though, you will find out what defconfig file to use, which is packaged with the kernel source.
I'm not aware of this
Then I'll digg into the Kernel source and look for the default Samsungs config. Thanks for the hint
From the README_Kernel file:
* defconfig_file
- android_espresso10_omap4430_r02_user_defconfig : GT-P5100

Hi,
I have built required kernel modules for Milestone 2 (kernel version 2.6.32.9) to access Windows and Samba shares.
2 modules are required (slow-work.ko and cifs.ko) and one is optional (nls_utf8.ko) if you want to use option iocharset=utf8 during mount.
If you would like to use CifsManager to auto load all 3 modules you have to configure "Path to cifs.ko" option to something like this: "/system/lib/modules/slow-work.ko;insmod /system/lib/modules/nls_utf8.ko;insmod /system/lib/modules/cifs.ko" (of course if you placed all modules in /system/lib/modules directory).
Please let me know if it works for your devices.
Regards
Is it working for your device?
Yes modules works on UK version of Milestone 2. I'm just not sure if all other version of Milestones use the same kernel. Thats why I asked if it works for your device.
Works just fine for me.
Thanks
Are there any other kinds of modules people could create?
Sent from my Milestone 2 XDA App
Thanks.
works on TW version of Milestone 2.
hi,
i couldnt find the kernel sources on motorolas open source site,
which sources did you build from ? (i want to build the nfs module)
PS: listening to mp3s via cifs works much better with mount parameter: forcedirectio
UPDATE: These modules were added by request to Hundsbuah's kernel here:

I was not going to post this because it has limited use for most TF300T owners but it can't hurt so here it is. The attached file(ath9k.tar.gz) contains kernel modules needed to get AR9271 based usb wifi dongles working on the latest stock TF300T kernel(Asus build 10.4.2.20, kernel version 3.1.10). I have tested the modules with this dongle: TP-Link TL-WN722N.
Uncompress the file and you will get an ath9k directory. Inside are the modules, 2 scripts for easy loading and unloading of the modules, and iwconfig compiled for Android. Getting the dongle working goes something like this:
Su to root. Copy htc_9271.hw to /system/etc/firmware. Run the scripts start_ath9k and stop_ath9k to load and unload the modules.
After the modules are loaded, insert the dongle into the keyboard full size usb port and run ifconfig and iwconfig as needed. If wlan0(default android wifi) is on then iwconfig will show the dongle as wlan1.
Note: I did not post this on the Dev forum because I did not develop these modules...I only changed a few lines in 2 modules before compiling them.

Not very likely...you would need to get your kernel source, add ath9k driver support to the kernel config, then fix any compile errors.

You need the kernel source for your tablet and a way to root your tablet. I did a cursory Google search for the kernel source for your tablet and I can't find it. If you can get the kernel source code for your tablet then it might be possible to compile ath9k modules. If you can't root that tablet then kernel modules won't be useful because there would be no way to load them.

I had to comment out a few lines of code in 2 modules to get mine to compile. On the TF300T, it has to do with LED code not present in the stock kernel that is referred to in 2 of the modules. If you use my modules on the TF300T, you will get no LED blinking on the WIFI stick when data is transmitted or received.

Could really use some help. For the life of me I can't compile a kernel module driver ath9k for my USB wireless adapter TL-WN722N. So it can be used by insmod on my rooted Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5110 on Kernel 3.0.31 Build BMC9 running android 4.1.2. Welcome to Kernel build guide.
WITH THIS METHOD YOU WILL GET installable zip for your kernel.
My english is not best but i think you all will understand this guide . I write this guide because i dont own S4 Mini anymore and unfortunally i cant build kernels or roms anymore for s4 mini.
this is my kernel build method. you will have everything (tools) for build a kernel for s4 mini device. if you have questions, then ask it here. this kernel method is working only aosp based kernel (not tested for tw kernel but it may also work but you need ramdisk of tw kernel)
be sure you have packages installed for build something like this, or edit or clone a github source. look at cm kernel build guides.
1. Download build-s4-mini-kernel.zip [here]
extract it to root of your user directory (my is /home/proxuser/)
2. We need toolchain 4.7.4 by Christopher83 original thread [here]
download
arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi-linaro_4.7.4-2013.07-build_2013_07_12.tar.bz2
extract arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi-linaro_4.7.4-2013.07 folder to toolchains folder (home/yourusername/toolchains) and name it linaro_4.7.4
Download Build scripts from my source here
download:
- abooteur_3g.img
- abooteur_lte.img
- build_all.sh
- build_eur_3g.sh
- build_eur_lte.sh
- build_master.sh
- mkbootfs
- mkbootimg
and put them to your kernel folder "root folder of your kernel".
if you want clone a kernel source: example CyanogenMod's cm-10.2 kernel then
open Terminal, and be in user root folder /home/yourusername (just open terminal and your there)
Code:
git clone https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_samsung_msm8930-common.git -b cm-10.2
if you want clone my Kartal kernel then
Code:
git clone https://github.com/proxuser/kartal.git -b master
it will named "if you cloned cyanogenmod kernel android_kernel_samsung_msm8930-common" if you clone my kernel then it will named "kartal"
you can rename kernel folder, its not problem.
if you want change of kernel name(example kartal), then go yourkernel/arch/arm/configs/kartal_defconfig and edit CONFIG_LOCALVERSION="-Kartal" change only "Kartal" for your kernel's name. if you want change defconfig example "kartal_defconfig" to "yourkernel_defconfig" then you need change it in build_master.sh too that it builds with your config file.
if you downloaded your kernel source and your build tools are there then lets start
Open terminal
type
Code:
cd yourkernelfolder
for build both phones i9195 & i9190
Code:
./build_all.sh
if it denies access for build_all.sh then type
Code:
chmod 777 build_all.sh
you can give all files access with this command.
for build i9195
Code:
./build_eur_lte.sh
for build i9190
Code:
./build_eur_3g.sh
finally it will start building. it will done within 4-5 min. depend your pc speed.
after it builds succesfully, your kernel will be in your /home/yourusername/Packages/ folder
IF YOU WANT add new changes from CM or other kernel to your kernel
then open Terminal
cd yourkernelfolder
git remote add CyanogenMod https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_samsung_msm8930-common.git
git fetch CyanogenMod
this will fetch CyanogenMod kernel changes but it will not apply to your kernel. you will add changes step by step yourself. copy commits SHA from CyanogenMod kernel and
open Terminal
Code:
git cherry-pick 2108e6c3109ae126590a81876145a1f17d6771b5
if you get success on pick a commit then you will get a message like this
Code:
[email protected]:~/kernel$ git cherry-pick a41564437a0eb910d0347d274456f3f0116c3c77
[master 5dd0694] net-fixes: flow_dissector: prevent an infinite loop (CVE-2013-4348)
Author: Eric Dumazet <[email protected]>
1 file changed, 3 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-)
if you get an error like this
Code:
[email protected]:~/kernel$ git cherry-pick 63ee35463ea3ec5d4e8f2c60ad0f70abd8463733
error: could not apply 63ee354... ARM: 7809/1: perf: fix event validation for software group leaders
hint: after resolving the conflicts, mark the corrected paths
hint: with 'git add <paths>' or 'git rm <paths>'
hint: and commit the result with 'git commit'
thats mean it is not applied to your files. just type "git status" to see what files are not modified.
then type: git reset --hard for go to your last commit.
this will make changes of error commit back.
Work always with git because with this way you can save a lot your changes and you can restore anything anytime.

Srry wrong topik..
I have built your kernel successfully, but after flashing the .zip the device is stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy S4mini" Bootscreen.
I tested it with the this two roms:
- cm-10.2-20131102-SNAPSHOT-M1-serranoltexx
- CARBON-JB-UNOFFICIAL-20131026-1327-serranoltexx
Do you have any idea why it's not working?
Edit: I used arcos source and it is working fine now
@junkyde
Can't get the stock kartal kernel to build.
What for OS are you running in your virtual box? ubuntu? 86x or 64x?
Did you install any other buildtools?
there isn't a stock kartal kernel. kartal kernel is aosp. I am using Linux Mint 15 in a 64bit version on Virtual Box.
Ps: I had also my troubles with ubuntu x86 and x64, thats why I switched.

Forgot to add, I'm downloaded the cyanogenmod kernel from build 10.1 since that's the cyanogenmod version I use and for the one I need to make this mod, could this be the cause of the problem? Googling it seems that the kernel version you use may need a specific toolchain version.

I'm not using kartal but the one downloaded from cm. Thought the instructions were generic and the script took into account wether you had downloaded the kernel from cm or kartal :/, I did go inside the directory with all the defconfig files, how do I know which one should I point it to on cm-10.1 kernel?
Regarding the lights.c then I just have to include that library on the same directory you put it in your kernel AND add the changes you pointed to here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49958578&postcount=215 and I would be set?

I am posting here asking for help, assistance, coaching.
It seems to me that I have all the pieces to properly modify the Sero 7 Pro ROM to accept ad hoc Wi-Fi connections. I've spent several days trying to find a simple step-by-step guide for applying github patches to existing kernels and flashable ROM. I have come to believe that no such simple guide/aid exists because the process itself appears to be complex.
The Nexus 7 CyanogenMod has been successfully modified for ad hoc Wi-Fi. My research indicates that the Sero 7 and the Nexus 7 are similar enough that the same patches should be able to be applied to the Sero 7 ROM. The Nexus 7 and Sero 7 both:
Use Android Jelly Bean 4.2.X
Have the same processor, 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3
Use the same Wi-Fi Chip, Broadcom BCM4330
Kernels use the same Driver, Broadcom bcmdhd Version 5.90.195.104
What I have is the kernel source
http://hisense-usa.com/support/firmware/Sero%207%20Pro_kernel_opensource_us.tar.gz
The full Stock ROM, latest version
https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=F7DECBA5BB726100%21108
Patches applied to Nexus 7 CyanogenMod ROM with detailed discussion
http://www.thinktube.com/android-tech/46-android-wifi-ibss
Briefly summarizing the discussion and code contained in the above Thinktube webpage:
The Kernel is patched making changes to the bcmdhd Wi-Fi driver
The ROM is patched making changes
to the wpa_supplicant
a few additions to the Android framework and
some changes to the Settings App
So in concept it seems pretty straightforward. Where I am struggling is the whole github process of applying the patch to the Kernel source. Then compiling the modified Kernel source. And applying the remaining patches to the ROM with the newly modified Kernel.
I need someone willing to work with me on the github piece. Or alternately coach me through that process.
So the resounding lack of response tells me either I've posted on the wrong forum or it is indeed as complex and cumbersome as I suspected.
But I may have figured out how to accomplish it myself. I have NOT figured out the github process. But I do know a little Linux and do run a virtual Ubuntu machine.
So I :
1. manually modified the Broadcom bcmdhd in the kernel source line by line.
2. swapped the wpa_supplicant file in the Sero7 stock ROM with the one from the Nexus 7 CyanogenMod ROM.
3. extracted the needed sero7_defconfig and initramfs.cpio.gz files
4. compiled the modified kernel source code and created a new boot.img
5. inserted the new boot.img to complete the modification of the Stock ROM
And if this all works, I’ll post my fix in a new thread, perhaps “Sero 7 Pro hoc Wi-Fi Fix”

Hi,
my only goal is to use my Nexus 7 (2013 version, running kitkat) to view digital television (dvb-t).
Therefore, have I unlocked it (with complete erase grrr), then rooted it.
And finally, read about one hundred message threads on xda to know how to compile dvb modules for my kernel (3.4.0-gac9222c).
My problem, after all this work, is that it seems that Google did not compile its kernel with modules support.
After doing
# lsmod, I got the following error:
/proc/modules: No such file or directory.
This means apparently that there is no modules support for this kernel.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18818442/loading-kernel-modules-in-android-4-3
My 2 questions is the following:
(1) is it possible to flash a kernel image on my nexus 7 to get module support
(2) is it possible to do that without reflashing my ROM (my stock ROM is enough for my needs)
Cheers,
Louis
I am now in the process of recompiling my own kernel for my Nexus 7 2013, incorporating the DVB-T drivers that I need.
I found a very good tutorial for doing this: http://pete.akeo.ie/2013/10/compiling-and-running-your-own-android.html
The only problem is that the sources of dvb usb drivers in the Android kernel are not up-to-date.
I am searching an easy way to inject the last sources from git://linuxtv.org/media_build.git into the Android kernel?
The directory structure is different. I think i will be forced to update the Makefiles and the Kconfig files by hand, and add & replace .c and .h files manually. I someone has a better (more lazy) solution, I am interrested :victory:
Meanwhile, I play with an old Freecom usb DVB-T stick that is supported by old media sources in the Android kernel.
Wrong forum, here is the 2013 model's one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-7-2013
