A friend of mine recently picked up a Nook Color (silver bezel, if thy matters). As I already have a NC (dark grey bezel), I was asked to install CM on his as well. Easy enough...
I installed made a twrp boot card and put a ROM on it, inserted it into his nook and booted. The problem is, it booted normally into the stock ROM.
First thing I thought to try was to verify the recovery was correctly done, so I inserted the card into my nook and booted it... no issues at all.
I put the card back into his nook to make sure the sd port works, and it does.
Second attempt was with cwm, again, no luck... and again, my NC booted from the card without issue.
I've tried with two different cards now... a class 4 2gb ad a class 4 16gb. Both work in my nook and both read fine if you are booted into the stock nook rom, but his nook simply will not boot from them.
What am I missing here?
I've read through quite a few threads on the subject and the standard response is to tey a new card reader... but why would one nook boot fine and the other one not if it was a card reader?
Nook Color or Nook Tablet?

Wait, isn't the silver bezel the Nook Tablet, not a Nook Color? The Tablet uses a different bootloader, so the NC card won't work in it.
Oh holy crap, I missed the most obvious thing in the world! There really are no telltale signs when booting it up, and I didn't have the documents with me last night. Says nook tablet right on the quick tart guide that came with it.
Thank you.

I have been using my NC for a couple of months now, running the OC kernel and the latest nightlies. I decided that I would buy one for my wife and do the same thing.
When I put my trustie SD card in the new NC to flash it, it boots merrily to the 1st NC color video prior to 1st setup. I took the card out and put it in my other NC and it boots tinto recovery manager. I took it out and put it back in the new one and it boots back to the video.
I went back to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227 and rebuilt my card. I repeated the process I outlined above with the same resulyts.
Whta's up. Why won't my NC boot of the card?
It sounds silly but can you try on another different NC, not yours or the new one, just to eliminate the new NC that might have a bad uSD socket.
OK I found a 3rd NC and tried the SDcard in it. Boots to recovery fine. Still won't boot in the problem NC
So, your golden uSD does indeed boot on your current and the 3rd Nook while it won't boot on your newly-wify Nook. It sounds like the new NC has some problem with the uSD socket.
Can you return or exchange it?
I bought it used. I do have a couple receipts from B&N ebay that I've purchased recently. Do you think I could use one of them?
i followed the instructions and put touchnooter in the SD card, booted with it the nook, and got the splash screen, then it went dark, took out the sd card, and rebooted... the nook booted normally, never gave me an option to select adw or anything, its still the same old barnesnnobles crap.. so i tried the salsicha nooter, same thing, looks like it installs fine, rooted forever it reads, and then reboots... to the normal pre root screens!!
is it maybe beacuse my nook is 1.1.0? barnes n nobles website seems to be down or unreacheable form here in southareica so i cant really upgrade my nooks firmware... strange... but the stranger is that it looks like it works, and then i dont get the adw launcher option... any help? been here reading and trying things for the last 6 hrs... sorry, 7...
My dad rooted the nook color a year ago, but then bought a nexus 7, so he gave it to me, I tried to install cyanogen mod so I could access blue tooth, I tried to put clock work mod on so i could install the mod, but it wouldn't boot from the sd card, so i tried a few different methods, so I tried turning it on after one of them and it showed the black screen with the silver n and the small white words at the bottom, then the screen goes black, then a few seconds later it goes back to the same screen, this is happening infinetly and im not sure how to fix it any help would be appreciated, I can supply pictures or videos of it happening if needed.

The problem is you may have messed up your partitions or at least the contents of them. Go to my partition repair thread linked in my signature and follow the guide there. You can also look at my NC tips thread and read items A8 and A12.

Did you read my automatic repair bootloop discussion in A12? That is the stock recovery trying to repair itself. You need to make one of my specially modified bootable CWM SDs and it will boot to that. Other bootable CWM SDs will not work. Then you can use my repair partition 2 zip. Then you can flash the other partition repairs. Then you can flash whatever ROM you want.

so i put my bootable cwm sdcard into my nook to have it boot from it, it has worked with the same sdcard on my other nook, and it just booted normally! it didnt boot to sdcard. isnt it supposed to prioritize the sdcard first?

any suggestions on how to coax it to do so? i just rewrote the image to the sdcard and it still wont boot to it...
What version of CWM is on your boot card? Some earlier versions have trouble with the later issued NCs. Also, make sure it isn't a Nook Tablet (I know, but it is amazing how many don't actually know there is a difference.)

I am positive it is a nook color... on 1.4.3 just like my other one used to be, and i am using the CWM-6.0.1.2-bootable_SD.zip from leapinlar's tips thread.

If the CWM SD booted fine in one NC and not the second, the second is not a NC. It has to be a Nook Tablet. The Tablet runs 1.4.3 also. What color is the bezel on the second device, black or silver? And what is the model number of the second device?

Silver means Nook Tablet. Go to NT forum, these won't work.

Hi all,
I bought my kids nooks for Christmas and rooted them all with cm7. Recently my oldest son decide he wanted to clear his nook and set it back to the factory state... (no idea why) regardless he decided to do it on his own which I only found out about after he had er bricked it. Here's a description of what he says he did.
1-Wiped the SD card
2-Copied the nook software to the sd card
3-rebooted into recovery mod
4-deleted anything he could delete? No idea, this is where I had to laugh
5-rebooted the nook, it didn't... Go figure
I'm not sure what version of recovery he had but it had to be an older version. I tried the various resets but I'm pretty sure the internals been wiped... now I did connect it to a PC and just cycled the power and it will chime recognition for a sec but then its still dead. Is there a way to create a new internal boot loader or is it spare parts?
Thanks either way, love the site

You may want to try to boot ClockWorkMod off an sd card(here is a link to a forum post about it) and if that works then you will want to follow leapinlar's post to repair the partitions here
Your issue is he probably formatted /boot (older versions of CWM allow that). If he did that it will not turn on unless there is a bootable SD in the slot. The solution is to go to my partition repair thread as the last user recommended and follow the instructions there.
