Low Stock Quadrant Scores - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm getting pretty frustrated with my nexus 7 because I'm getting horribly low Quadrant scores. I tried messing around and putting custom kernels on it but when I compared the scores to the thread I was reading, I couldn't even get the stock scores mentioned in the thread with a overclocked custom kernel.
I'm getting a total of 3412 on my Nexus 7 on my stock kernel on the stock rooted/unlocked bootloader 4.2.1. I wiped the device, reinstalled the 4.2.1 stock backup, and then installed quadrant and ran it so there shouldn't be background processes problems. This pisses me off because on the Jay's Buttery Tweaks, he got 4875 on his stock kernel/stock ROM. Somethings wrong there. What would cause such a horrible score?

The first thing you need to know about quadrant scores is................they are decieving, and usually bloated. If your N7 preforms well during use, then your good. Also, if they were that important, all rom and kernel developers would post them with their releases. They dont for a reason.

Honestly, who cares? Is your nexus laggy? Are you having trouble doing what you want to do? If not then screw it, you're fine. Why is everyone obsessed with idiotic scores and benchmarks? The girls won't sleep with you cuz your Quadrant was over 9000!

Quadrant has never given the Tegra3 Chip really good scores for some reason? Almost all other benchmarking apps like Antutu, CFBench, Vellemo, Smart-bench, and many others will give 3 phones that I have, that are very close in specs a much closer comparison. I don't know why it is but Quadrant has never benched any of my Tegra3 devices high.
And was stated above go by how it feels in real life usage, is it snappy and smooth don't go specifically by benchmarks all the time they can sometimes give you an idea, but they are not tell you real world usage. For example my moms Samsung Transform Ultra with Android 2.3 and a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon is still really snappy. Its hard to believe that it is almost as fast as some of my quad core newer devices.

Why do you care about benchmark scores? They really really don't matter. What matters is how it performs during usage. Nothing else. You can have awesome scores, yet have the device lag during normal use.

Alright well that was with the motley kernel and I'm not sure what was up but it felt pretty smooth with the motley kernel but gave me those terrible scores. Performance in GTA3 was a decent amount better than stock.
Then I restored the stock rom and installed M kernel and trickster Mod and after that because the benchmarks were just pissing me off. Overclocked to 1.6Ghz and did some SD modifications and jesus christ everything is buttery smooth, fast loading, gta3 runs awesome, and I can get a like 6200 score in quadrant and 15397 on AnTuTu. Probably the fastest anrdoid device I've ever used.
I just confuses the crap out of me because I get pretty crappy graphics scores and changing the GPU clock and raising the GPU voltage doesn't change the GPU score on either benchmark.
Can someone tell me what the LP core is and why my GPU scores won't change?

I disagree, respectfully of course. Benchmarks like the Quadrant are useful standard tools to measure the performance of these devices. While they are not perfect, they point out potential weaknesses in our phones and tablets and whatnot.
Compared to stock Nexus 7, the iPad mini runs much more smoothly and yet is underpowered spec-wise. Still the mini puts up a better benchmark score than the superior N7.

quadrant doesn't matter, but it can be useful for developers or just for the fun of it. first off, most people don't bench correctly. you want the CPU to be at the highest CPU speed at all times, quadrant doesn't put enough stress on the device to allow that, so the CPU will scale. if it scales, you don't know the actual CPU speed that its testing. you want to set the CPU speed at the highest speed, and you want to set the lowest CPU speed as the highest speed also. also, for higher scores, you'd need to disable fsync, and turn off tegra hot plug(and enable all four cores). sdcard tweaks wont help you, neither will jays buttery tweaks. also, overclocking the GPU wont help since we are limited in fps.

where does the iPad mini show better benchmarks?

Well I've tried like 4 or 5 different kernels and m-kernel is the best. Only one that can score 15,000 on Antutu.
Can anyone riddle me why no matter what I change the gpu max frequency or voltages to, my 2d and 3d graphics are always the same?

those benchmarks arent gpu benchmarks, especially quadrant. we are limited to 59/60 fps no matter what gpu you use. for gpu try basemark es2.0 taiji, gpu mark, or the windmill benchmark.

Jesus christ. Those are great results. What settings are you using? I installed trinity on a fresh restore of 4.2.1 and used Trickster Mod and System Tuner to set it to 1.7Ghz, performance, deadline, 1024 cache, zRAM enabled, fsync disabled, with stock voltages but I got barely over 5000.
I'm getting 6135 on the beefed up M-kernel. You get a decent amount higher in CPU, memory, and I/O, but your 2D score triples mine. 3D is the same.

bench at 1700mhz high/1700mhz low. turn off tegra hotplug and enable all 4 cores(i dont know if trickster has that option, trinity kernel toolbox does), turn off fsync. trinity doent include zram, so you couldnt of used it. zram has nothing to do for performance anyways and doesnt help you with anything else. zram gives a little more ram for devices that are low ram to begin with. the n7 isnt low ram. plus, with zram, itll get slower after a few hours after bootup. i use ondemand/deadline btw. and, go into the devices main settings, developer options, and enable force gpu rendering. that raise your 2d score. i also bet that you are getting caught in the thermal throttle, which lowers your cpu speed when your device gets hot.

alright cool thanks for the info. I'll add in those settings minus the hotplug fix andsee what that does when I get.back. I know thermal throttling lowers scores. I've been doing tests recently on a bag of ice. the cpu stays plenty cool

Quadrant Score are not important. If it performs well who cares about a QS.

I disagree with that. Just by clearing up RAM and turning off Processes that were not being used just sitting in RAM, maybe 30 or 40MB, waiting to be used my score went up over 200 points. If the benchmark was accurate then that would not have actually made any difference as it would have cleared out any unused processes itself before running.

Wow. Really? Ive gotten 5900 with just 1.4GHz, GPU 2d rendering and clearing out some RAM, fsync disabled running M-Kernel a23.

Quadrant benchmarks

Can someone explain exactly what it really means?
I know the higher the number the better your phone is working but beyond that i have no clue
I consistently get 2080 to 2250 on cm7 nightly 30 running ondemand governor min 368 max 1.3ghz. Im assuming thats respectable?
I ran it once on performance governor at 1.5ghz and got about 2500 on benchmark.

This is the best score out of a series of three I ran right after flashing Cm6.1.1 and cranking setcpu up to max. I'm sure that this would run perfectly well at these speeds for day to day on his kernel, but I usually only run at around 1113mhz. The g2 is plenty fast on its stock 800mhz with fantastic battery life, don't get me wrong. But what the hell is the point of all this rooting and rom flashing wagoonery if I don't give myself a slight performance bump.

At 1.5ghz max and 368 min (on-demand governor) with CM7 and Pershoot's latest kernel (I believe he incorporated the new GPU drivers), I get 2700-2800. Quadrant tests your CPU, memory, and GPU performance.
As for Quadrant I tend to find it unreliable, for benchmarks I use Smartbench 2011. Seems a bit more reasonable. Makes you realize how underpowered our GPU's is compared to the PowerVR SGX540.

GPU = Graphical processor unit
its the chip in the phone that draws polygons and renders graphics so games and graphic related things run smoothly

I tried it on smartbench 2011 and got about a 1500.

Got 1500 for what specifically?
Smartbench 2011 outputs 2 bars after the test. One for Productivity Index (CPU performance) and another for Gaming Index (GPU performance). Top bar is Productivity Index and bottom bar is Gaming Index.
from my understanding quadrant isn't all that accurate when it comes to benchmarking...hopefully i'm not wrong but I think it scores the phones ability to handle 2d/3d graphics, how fast it reads and write data, memory and cpu. If you are using the free version you won't be able to see how you score on each test. Even though its just numbers I can't help it...check out my latest and highest bench marks. I barely missed the 3k mark today on quadrant oc'ed to 1.8 got 2997...I just forgot to upload the screenshot.

Wow the Smartbench 2011 results for Liquid Villain are impressive. Might have to give that rom a try.
I think it might I been a fluke lol the cloest I got that again 1600/2400ish.

I have used flippy's kernal and oc'ed to 1.9 and got 2997 on quandrant but smartbench score was 1900ish productivity/ 1700ish gaming...phone got a bit hot as well...with pershoots kernal I can get almost the same results and phone stays at normal temp.
I got 3158 on quadrant running CM7rc2 with pershoots .34 kernel. Oc'd to 1516 with performance governor.
Currently on CM7rc3 with pershoots .36 kernel I'm getting high 2900's.
All I know is ›3000 on quadrant is FAST!

How do I get pershoot's latest kernel?
just over 3200+ on quadrant running the latest CM7 nightly and setting [email protected]
for quadrant, i have noticed its important to run it several times before you get an accurate measurement... personally, i've had the best score around the 3rd or 4th run.... anything more after that just plateau the score or even dips a bit at times. and kill heavy background services (ie: f/b, lookout, juice defender, DSP manager)
FYI: if i set CPU back to stock, i'm still @ 2700ish
Quadrant hasn't been updated for a long time and it is not exactly reliable when it comes to evaluating a phone's performance. You're much better off with Antutu Benchmark.

[REQUEST] Tegra GPU OC....

Hey everyone...I tell ya, I sure am enjoying all these awesome custom roms and kernels. Great job to all the developers here, putting in the blood, sweat, and tears for the advancement of the community, thank you so much. One feature that I saw in a Xoom build was the GPU overclocked, and while I'm sure it won't interest everyone, and there is probably only little gain to be had from it, I would love to have the option to oc the CPU and the GPU for the highest performance possible...please. Well I think that covers it unless someone else shares my desire to see this feature. Thanks for all your work and consideration XDA and have a great day.

oc-ing the gpu doesnt get you anything... gpu is default 200mhz 2d with 300mhz in 3d and it can be uped to 250mhz 2d and 400mhz 3d but it cant be software controlled and it will eat more power...
and no oc-ing the cpu doesn't oc the gpu, its a separate part of the tegra2 processor
Hey Thor, thanks for joining the conversation. Based on what youve seen so far, how well are the tegra GPU cores being utilized? Suffice to say I've pulled off insane desktop GPU overclocks that showed almost nill gain with drivers that werent mature in which the GPU cores werent being loaded past 50% . I realize that the tegra is a horse of a different color, but isnt it still affected by the specific driver optimizations, hence the THD enhancements? Just out of curiosity as I very much trust your experience. I am still interested in trying it with definitive comparisons to follow...well about as definitive as synthetic benchmarks can be anyway.
I just saw that you have a new beta... Yay. I cant wait to give it a whirl.
I have been over locked for a little while. Max I have done is 1506 but it tends to be slightly unstable. I run 1400 now and haven't had any issues. biggest difference I notice is home screen transitions load fast and don't lag and programs load much quicker. there doesnt seem to be any games that will push the CPU hard so I don't notice much of a difference there.

I've had 1600mhz going strong with no instability, benchmark after benchmark, the only issue I've had is the device shutting down when left alone for too long, but I consider that a useful standard function. Otherwise 1600 performance has been rock solid. I decided to take it upon myself to take this girl apart' clean the CPU off, remove the thermal pad, and apply some as5....though the chip didnt really run very hot to begin with. Now until I have the option to go for 1800mhz, I'd like to see where the max threshold is for cpu/gpu oc.
I have mine overclocked also at 1600.. Runs very stable at this speed and benchmarks not too bad:

Can only the 3D Clocks be altered without touching 2D? If yes can you make such a version of the ........... that "nobody" knows anything about?

Very nice quadrant score man, I used to score alot higher until I updated to stock 3.1+ updates. It seems like the higher my OS version number gets, the lower my synthetic performance gets overall.

that's what mine did. it would reboot while sleeping. sometimes it would be 3 or 4 times in an hour.

Umm, what rom do you guys run for this? I'm on rooted and CWMd stock 3.1 rom. Can't find a OC kernel for it. Only one I can find is for ASUS based roms. I prefer to keep stock rom if it's possible.
ME: Asus A500 Iconia USA wifi only. HC 3.1

You should try richardtrip's kernel. His kernel is keep updating Very good performance and stability.
thats the kernel i am using o/c 1400 works very well. you can find it in the development thread.

Thanks! Works great. Do you feel the HoneyVillian rom runs faster with the v2.4 Kernel or about the same as stock Acer 3.1 HC rom with v2.4 Kernel?
So far I can keep stable at 1.5 after 2 hours of use. It's also slept for 30 mins and seems ok at that too.
Also what kind of Scaling do you guys use? Ondeman, Interactive? On my phone I use ondemand.

theres only one that fits best battery and fastest.. trinity kernel.
I like Trinity but Motley also did very well for me.

This^ look at it this way. The nexus allready has great performance, it will handle any game you throw at it. (Unless not optimized for tegra 3) so wht else do you need? A kernel that gives amazing battery life. And what kernel is that..... \l/ TRINITY \l/

Ill say motley. I tried trinity kernel. Its good. But I getbetter performance,stability, and battery life with motley. All these battery screen shots really mean nothing. Why? Because none show real heavy use. I can easily get the same stats or better with light to moderate use. Show me some stats showing 8-10+ hrs of screen on time. With some heavy app or game usge. Anyone can use device for a few hours. Then leave it in deep sleep and show the same or better stats.
I've tried all the kernels out so far. They are all good. Its a matter of personal preference of features you want. Some pack things others don't. MOTLEY 'S ATM is the only linaro based kernel. So its using new additions/components. Better optimized. Benchmarks are cool but its real world performance that matters most.
I'm running stock rom with motley latest linaro based kernel with Zram, then CPU overclock @ 1.624ghz and gpu overclock @ 520mhz. I'm also undervolted -75mV across the board. So my temps stay low. Which equates to my device running at a higher performance speed longer.
The best thing about stock rom is I can measly flash different kernels and not have to worry about flashing a rom and setting my apps n all THST all over again. I can flash a kernel with no wipes and be good. Plus stock rom is the most stable ATM. Can't lie though, I am anxious to flash some roms. THST paranoid Android one looks really good. Along with the pure linaro based rom. That's the great thing about choices.
Its not a matter of who has the best kernel. Its more about what you looking for in features and personalizing your device to cater to our needs.
Asking who has the best kernel is like asking who is the best developer on xda. I don't think that's fair to the developers as they ALL work hard on roms or kernels. Forget the popularity contests.
THEY ALL THE BEST lol. Some are just more seasoned than others. Which is OK. I love the fact we have variety of things to choose from. I've been impressed with trinity kernel, based on scores I've been seeing. But I'm also impressed with faux kernel and its a more straight forward one with lots of new Linux commits and additions. All the kernels have a personality of their own. I love the fact that twrp makes it very easy n simple to try out any kernel I want for nexus7. No matter who makes it. Every developer has its followers. You also have people who like to try out different setups.
Choice is a good thing! That's what I love about Android.
I've got to say for me trinity is the best kernel for the Nexus 7, updated daily and great communication with the dev makes this an awesome kernel. The trinity toolbox app is the icing on the cake.

I'm running stock rom with motley latest linaro based kernel with Zram, then CPU overclock @ 1.624ghz and gpu overclock @ 520mhz. I'm also undervolted -75mV across the board. So my temps stay low. Which equates to my device running at a higher performance speed longer.
The best thing about stock rom is I can measly flash different kernels and not have to worry about flashing a rom and setting my apps n all THST all over again. I can flash a kernel with no wipes and be good. Plus stock rom is the most stable ATM. Can't lie though, I am anxious to flash some roms. THST paranoid Android one looks really good. Along with the pure linaro based rom. That's the great thing about choices.
Its not a matter of who has the best kernel. Its more about what you looking for in features and personalizing your device to cater to our needs.
Asking who has the best kernel is like asking who is the best developer on xda. I don't think that's fair to the developers as they ALL work hard on roms or kernels. Forget the popularity contests.
THEY ALL THE BEST lol. Some are just more seasoned than others. Which is OK. I love the fact we have variety of things to choose from. I've been impressed with trinity kernel, based on scores I've been seeing. But I'm also impressed with faux kernel and its a more straight forward one with lots of new Linux commits and additions. All the kernels have a personality of their own. I love the fact that twrp makes it very easy n simple to try out any kernel I want for nexus7. No matter who makes it. Every developer has its followers. You also have people who like to try out different setups.
Choice is a good thing! That's what I love about Android.

2. zram is a placibo. theres nothing there
3. stock rom is good, but i prefer a pure aosp build. no, they are not the same.
4. and the last two paragraphs are the absolute truth.
5. really, you should try them all, let your device tell you which kernel it likes the best

Thing with zram is, its not for getting higher benchmark scores or immediate performance. Its more so for heavy multitasking. Is been proven to help. The placebo is on people who think its supposed to provide some immediate result. If someone is a heavy multitasker on their device, then zram would benefit them. If you not much of a multitasker, then zram will show no Bendix for you.
You are right though, about trying out different kernels and such. Pure aosp rom sounds good. I just hate having to reset up my apps n stuff. I know titanium good for that but me personally, I'm waiting for roms to mature more and have most things, of not everything working. All roms so far seem to have something not working yet. Which is fine. Nature of the beast.

Trinity HANDS DOWN its been 3 hours on sleep and ITS still at 100%! + the ridiculous speed along with the power saving features. I may be new to the Nexus 7 scene but this is hands down to godly .

im not sure if gpus oc...but when u underclock..theres absolutely no performance difference..and saves battery too! 102mhz-1100mhz on demand/deadline..god like battery life. 4 hours screen time...still 45% left...shouldve been more if i didnt flash roms in between battery life. also under clocked, gta 3 and cs portable runs great and smooth still.

I flashed the latest builds. ran some benchmarks. for some reason, my device doesn't like the highest speed on benchmarks. it kept rebooting during them. so I stayed at 1.5ghz. governor I used was performance and on demand. for scheduler I ran with deadline. i forced cpu online and put fysnc on faster, thanks to TKT app. on quadrant, I was more concerned with seeing if I could achieve those crazy high I/O scores. which I did. my overall score was good but I've gotten higher on motley. it could be higher on this kernel if I get the 1.6ghz+ speed to stick. I was more impressed with my rl sqlite benchmark test. scored 18 seconds overall. which blows away the competition.
so I'm impressed with latest version of kernel. definitely better than the older build I ran of it from before. some things I've noticed though. where is the ability to undervolt at? no option in tkt app and the voltages tab disappeared from system tuner. also, this build gpu isn't overclocked. or might be better for me to say its definitely not running at 520mhz. there are more features that are going to be added, theyre being added all the time. ask gnex owners how the options grew(same app btw, different devices running trinity see different features in the app. so you purchase it once, and use it on multi devices. btw, voltage adjustment will be added, remember how new development is on the n7. also, if other developers added the options into their kernels, theyed be able to use those features with their kernels

thats just trinitys method of rotating the kernels.. starts off in experimental(every kernel is tested to boot and run before it every appears here), then it graduates to prerelease if it makes the cut, and then if you guys like it it makes its way to release. its just that trinity development is so new here that there isnt a prerelease yet

I've underclocked mines to 1.1ghz also. battery doesn't want to budge from 100% so far..lol. it's barley sipping battery. the UI and browser is fluid n smooth at this underclock. which is a good thing. the real test will come once I play nova3 shortly. if it plays lag free on this lower speed then underclocking is a winner. I set my governor to interactive though. you get better battery life than ondemand. using deadline also. with fsync set to faster.

I understand nexus 7 is still infancy, developement wise. its cool. just wondering if those features were included since the option disappeared. I could undervolt or increase voltage on motley kernel. the tkt app would let me do it on THST kernel as the section shows for it. but I like using system tuner for undervolting when I was on motleys kernel. can't wait to see what new features get added. plus once I get my new phone, hopefully there'll be a trinity kernel out for it so I can use tkt app with it. the build is very good.

You were interested in battery in an earlier post, this is me feeling meh and couching most of Sunday.
EDIT: Yes, emailing, tapatalk, browsing for laptop and not finding any, reading news in Pulse and flipboard, tweetcaster and testing slice(s?), gtalk, not heavy usage obviously. Screen wasn't on unless The Seven was used though.

Nexus 4 Benchmarks that are all over the place?

Ok so I've been tweaking my phone, doing everything in my knowledge to make it faster. I am using the stock rom with faux123 mako jb enhanced stock 422-r2. So my first benchmark on Antutu i got 18003. re-ran the same benchmark again with the same tweaks and got 14206 and thought it was anomaly so i ran it one more time and got 16142. I went back and re tweaked everything and my scores were every were, even in quadrant. the ranges were between 14200-16800. I haven't been able to get it back to 18003, maybe because i did it on a cold boob. but, the scores shouldn't be all over the place compared to benchmarking I've done on other phones. Any ideas on this and or fix it?
Your phone is throttling. Your first benchmark will normally be your fastest. I that's how it was for me anyways.
I've also had the same experience. It is certainly due to throttling.

Welcome to thermal throttling. I recommend a ROM with the Bionic patches (there is an otherwise 'stock' AOSP ROM with these in the dev section, I'm not a stock ROM user so I haven't any experience with it) and you should notice AnTuTu scores going up to 20k+ and a noticeable boost to actual usage. If your device will under volt well (most will do at least -100mV AFAIK) you may mitigate the throttling to some extent without compromising stability however I don't recommend disabling the thermal protection as is possible in some kernels due to the red light death issue. Throttling is only really noticeable when you benchmark back-to-back. It's not a massive issue in most real-world use. I suspect it will become more and more noticeable on newer devices as device manufacturers and SoC designers are forever scrambling to provide the best performance within the thermal constraints of a smartphone. As idle and low load consumption goes down with new processes, full load GPU and CPU thermals are forever increasing!
PA tweak improves benchmarks
I have to agree with you on this. The stock gave me an score of 17K (antutu). stability curve was all over the place in stock. switching to PA did not help much either, the scored went down to around 14K. yesterday i got an update from PA and flashing that gave me a boost of 18991. some good tweaks from PA i guess.

See if it's a governor problem, set it to performance and see if it levels out. GPU scores on antutu vary by @ 1000 marks, so take that into account too.

Opinions about nexus 10

Is the nexus 10 truly a good tablet? I was looking on you tube and the benchmarks are really low for the 1.7 ghz processor.
So that is why I'm asking if it's fast when you use it? Is it efficient? Does it multi task well? Is the screen resolution as good as they claim? Numbers don't mean a thing that's why I'm asking you the users. Thanks to anyone who has any input. If I haven't ask something and someone has done input I'll take that too. The benchmarks just confused me as I know they aren't everything. But my stock HTC evo 4g lte scores1 third higher at 1.5 ghz. Again, thanks

Well i can tell you the screen is amazing. Probably the best out there. Ive only had mine for about a week now but so far everything works great. Multitasking is fine and its really smooth. Games work great for me like gta vice city with no lag at all. Im using stock rom and stock kernel. Its been great so im not even going to unlock it. You also get the new updates right when theyre out and you dont have to wait. Ive seen lots of other threads like this and i can say most users will agree with this. :thumbup:

Look at some benchmarks in the KTManta and Trinity kernel threads. Custom kernels are the way to true performance on this tablet as it lets us modify the very conservative thermal throttling settings that come stock, as well as give undervolting capability to help save battery and be less hot, and allow for overclocking too if you want even more performance on top. I actually underclocked my CPU to 1GHz just now and did an overclocking on the GPU and still scored higher than anyone else's 3DMark scores using stock speed of 1.7GHz and 533MHz GPU. The Nexus 10 is among the top devices in any benhcmark there is right now when you start using a custom kernel. So ya, its very fast. I love this tablet.
I can break 20,000 point in AnTuTu now
And someone else broke the 10,000 point mark in 3DMark. And I get a 58.3 frame per second AVERAGE in the high quality test of Epic Citadel. The only reason citadel benchmark is at that (which is basically perfect anyway) is because vsync caps the FPS to 60, so the score would be much higher but it just isnt possible get any higher. lol
