Generally, I love my new phone but there is one issue I have not been able to solve which is a deal breaker. According to the Nexus support line, and my extensive experimentation, it is impossible to turn off email notification vibrations (non gmail), yet still have vibration notifications for text messages.
I receive hundreds of emails a day and the last thing I need is the phone vibrating all the time. On the other hand, my texts are less frequent and typically need attention!
According the Nexus support rep it is a function of Android 4.2
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
On an unrelated issue, the servers automatically assigned by the phone for both Bellsouth (Yahoo) and Hotmail email did not work. I had to search the web for other viable pop3 and imap options!
Can you use handcent for your texts and enable it that app?

Unfortunately the issue is not with the sms program. The problem is with the native email program. It seems no matter what setting one uses on any email account there will always be vibration notifications. The only way to turn these off is to set the phone to silence (one down volume click after vibration mode). The problem with putting the phone in silence mode is that one cannot get sms vibration notifications.
In my mind this makes ZERO sense!
apparently this has been a known issue for about a month.......

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried Light Flow...even bought the paid edition. Unfortunately, this does not work. I tried all types of combinations between email and text and same issue. Net net...if the sms notification vibrates then the email notification vibrates and visa versa. Looking to disconnect those two!

Hi,
The email notification icon which should appears every time a new email arrived isn't consistent; I was wondering if other people have the same issue and if there was a fix for it.
By that I mean: the "email notification" icon shows up only 20% of the time upon newly received mail. So I constantly have to check the email tabs to see if something new has arrived. It's a bit frustrating...
Also: Is there a way to have the SMS blinking light and sound behavior for the email? Meaning: if someone send me a SMS; the phone emit a beep and a green blinking light reminds me of this new SMS. I would like the same behavior when I receive an email.
SMS is such a rip off; making you pay 20c a message or $5 for 500 messages; it's so ridiculously expensive... Especially since pushed email work really well!
Kandjar
Go again through the list of sounds and notifications, there you will find exactly what you are looking for.
Indeed; I didn't thought about that list... it's not too often than m$ provide something useful up front
Thanks you very much for the reply I did work
I still don't have a consistent mail icon in the notification bar; but at this point I don't really care; the blinking light + sound is way enough
On my nexus 4 the notification led only seems to activate for SMS messages and glows white.
It does not flash for Emails (I use the Email app not Gmail) or missed calls.
Is this normal or is there a setting somewhere?
Try using the "Light Flow" app to control your LED lights. It works great. You can pick how often the LED blinks and the color it should use.

I get all different colour notifications depending on what app I get a message from without using any 3rd party app.
I've never used the email app unfortunately but seems as though missed calls doesn't trigger the LED. The notifications I know work are:
GMail - Set to white
Whatsapp - Set to green
Facebook - Set to blue/purple can't remember which
SMS - Set to white
I would've thought the Email app would just use the default white notification but maybe it doesn't have a trigger for it?

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

I don't use either of those but did you try adding them to lightflow? I'm pretty sure you need to specifically add non system apps to lightflow.

Hello everyone,
Whenever I get a new email in my Gmail box, my phone vibrates when in Vibrate Mode. But in Gmail options, I have vibration on new emails explicitly disabled. It seems the phone itself is overriding that setting. How can I get this to stop?
I don't want all vibrations in Vibrate Mode disabled though. I would still like my phone to vibrate for incoming text messages, but not for emails.

To my knowledge, what vibrate mode does is take all audible notifications and make them vibrate. That being said, if you have any notification on for your gmail, it will then vibrate when you get an email.

Hmm, makes sense I suppose, though it's not the best way to handle the scenario. If you have vibration for a notification specifically turned off, then the phone shouldn't take it upon itself to add a vibration to it just because the phone is in Vibrate Mode. I guess I'm just used to the more intelligent way Cyanogenmod does it where it provides an option to turn off vibration during a notification if has already been turned off in the app itself.
I am waiting VERY patiently for Cyanogenmod nightlies for this phone...
Yeah, well it's just over 3 weeks until this phone will be liberated as it should have been released originally! Until then, you could try playing around with a 3rd party app for sounds, etc. I don't have any to suggest unfortunately, because I don't use them, but it's just a thought.
What mcmb03 states seems true and definitely applying in Gmail app's case. I can only get it to stop vibration notification (when phone is set to vibrate mode) if I completely turn off the (or uncheck) Label notifications from my Gmail account settings.
Bug?
Either way, I sent feedback via the "Send feedback" option within the app. Fingers crossed I'm not the only one who has reported this "issue" to them and they will correct the Vibrate check function to override device/system setting.

I have my Gmail inbox set to the settings shown in my screenshot. I tested to confirm for you, these settings - mine does not vibrate when phone is in vibrate mode because it is unchecked.
Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Gmail app?
Well, I somewhat lied. I received upwards of 15 emails when in vibrate mode with "vibrate" unchecked and it did not vibrate. However, I have just received a couple shortly after posting and my phone DID vibrate... Odd...
EDIT: The emails to my Gmail app i received while my phone was in Vibrate mode with the vibrate feature DISABLED, those emails were sent to me with high priority, they were not a regular email. Just a note. Still weird.
Just shifted to Android 4.3 on a Nexus 4 after years of using Symbian. Learning loads of stuff and loving most of it.
However there is one thing that I sorely miss:- The ability to control sound and vibration notifications through "Profiles". I installed a nifty little app called 'Settings Extended' with which I can control these notifications quite easily.
The problem is that these settings seem to apply only to Calls and not Text messages.
First off, I have kept the vibration notification 'unchecked' in the stock messaging app because I don't want it to vibrate everytime I receive a text.
Next I change the Sound Settings to enable both sound and vibration notification. Here I expect the phone to Ring+Vibrate for both Calls and Text messages..just like in Nokia phones. Sadly this does not happen apparently because vibration is OFF in the stock messaging app.
So now I'm in a fix. If I enable vibration in the messaging app, the phone will vibrate for new texts even when I don't want it to and on disabling it I run the risk of missing the notification sound or blinking LEDs for that matter.
I have tried 3rd party apps like GoSMS and Handcent where they have an additional feature to enable vibration notification for text messages only when "Phone is set to Vibrate". The problem here is that the phone should be in "Vibration mode" i.e only vibration is enabled and sound is disabled for the app to give a vibration notification on new messages. When both sound and vibration are enabled under Sound settings, no vibration notification is produced.
This is really bugging me. Seems unnecessary complication of simple tasks to me. I have searched the net for a solution and although have found few people having the same problem, I haven't come across a solution yet. So now I turn to XDA because I know that if a solution exists, it can only be found here.
Thnaks to anyone who had the patience to go through this post!
Prerequisites:
- Install Light Flow Legacy (but also keep the regular Light Flow, this is mandatory).
- Now the LEDs will work even with Always-On screen on, and the annoying permanent notification from the notification bar will disappear.
- It will prompt you to disable the regular Light Flow. It will also generally work better.
- Enable Samsung workaround in Light Flow, when prompted.
Email:
- For Gmail and Google Apps email, replace Gmail app with Google Inbox app (it will probably replace Gmail anyway one day). Unfortunately Gmail does not work with Light Flow, unless you disable notifications altogether in Gmail's settings (in which case you get LED notifications from Light Flow but no notification bar notifications - you don't want this, or maybe you do if you really like Gmail over Inbox).
- In Google Inbox, set the "Pulse Notification Light" to Off for each account.
- Unfortunately, the Samsung Email app does not seem to work with Light Flow. But other email clients may work if you have work email accounts.
SMS:
- You can either use Samsung's SMS app (which turns on the screen on every message and this can't be disabled so it's not for me) or Textra (works, tested) or other SMS app.
- Hangouts doesn't work with Light Flow in SMS mode. Google Messenger (the new SMS messaging app from Google) does not work with Light Flow (which is a pity because it's very nice and clean).
Other messaging systems:
- Whatsapp and Hangouts work with Light Flow already (but Hangouts does not work with LightFlow for SMS messages if you set it that way). Make sure you disable the notification light in their settings.
Facebook, Instagram:
- Not tested, maybe someone else will
Hopefully this helps someone.
You can set up Lightflow to work correctly with Gmail, albeit with a slight kludge. And the built-in messaging app doesn't light up the screen on every message for me.
After some conversations with the developer, this is what works for me to get LF working:
1. Download and install the regular paid version. Don't bother to set up any notifications.
2. Download and install Lightflow Legacy (it's free). It will alert you that you need to disable, but not delete, the full version, and offer to disable it for you. Accept that option. This is NOT the same as disabling an app in the application manager. Don't disable it in the application manager.
3. At some point, it will prompt to to enable the Samsung workaround. Choose that setting.
4. Do NOT turn on administrators, even when Lightflow prompts you to do so.
5. In device Settings, go to Accessibility, scroll all the way down, and make sure Light Flow Legacy in On.
6. Back to Lightflow Legacy: In General settings, check (or make sure these are checked): Enable Light Flow, Show LED in Priority Mode, Accessibility check.
7. Go to Lightflow Legacy and set up your notifications. For some apps you'll need to check the Switch screen on and Wake screen when in pocket options to get notifications to work. To avoid the issue with screen locking and needing to use a PIN to unlock the screen, choose "Phone screen default length" as the value for Screen on length. The drawback to this is that your screen will light up for 5 to 10 seconds when you get a notification for these apps, but it's the only way to avoid having the phone prompt for a pin or password when you turn on the screen after getting a notification from one of these apps. NOTE: This won't work correctly with Always On Display or Night Clock turned on. Both of these options prevent Lightflow from turning on the screen, so you'll get the default blue flashing LED.
7b. Apps I know require these settings are Gmail, E-mail (Samsung's app),
8. For the built-in SMS app, uncheck the boxes for Monitor SMS Conversations, and check the option for Monitor notification bar.
9. Finally, go back to device Settings, choose Notifications, click Advanced, scroll down to Light Flow (not Legacy), and and turn off notifications. Make sure notifications are ON for Light Flow Legacy. (You might not see an option for regular Lightflow. That's OK.)
10. In device Settings / Display, make sure LED indicator is set ON.
With these settings, everything seems to be working for me, with the only drawback being the screen turns on for notifications from Gmail and Email. If you set up notifications for an app and just get the regular Blue LED instead of what you've programmed, follow step 7 for that app.
The Hangouts thing is very disappointing. Thanks for the info though!
It's really a shame to have to choose between a useful feature like AOD and getting the right LED color.

Try setting up the screen on workaround (Step 7) for Hangouts
It doesn't work because I use always on display.

You can only set LightFlow to work with Gmail if you are willing to either disable all notifications in Gmail, or set the display in LightFlow to turn on for a bit on every received email. Both are unacceptable for me.
As for the Samsung SMS app, mine always turns on the screen upon receiving a message. If you look on forums, everybody complains about this for every Samsung device and there is no workaround.
For me at least, having the screen turn on on notifications is completely unacceptable.

But you're not the only person using this device, are you? For some this will be an acceptable tradeoff.

Have you looked at the settings in the app? There's an option to turn off (or on) pop-ups. Have you tried turning it off? As I said, I get no screen on when I receive an SMS, so it's simply not true that "everybody" complains about this.

And I repeat, my steps work, and will be acceptable for many. XDA doesn't exist to satisfy only you.

Actually, have *you* tried to turn off the obvious pop-up setting in the default SMS app to see how the screen behaves ? Do you think that people would complain on forums with no solution in sight, if it was a simple setting ?
As for the rest of the nonsense, not worth getting into.
