I've been reading through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320350&page=39 and I found out that the .62 version of stock Gingerbread cannot be rooted so easily as .42.
I'm using AOKP Jelly Bean now and I'm tired of its lagginess and unstableness. So I'm switching back to GB.
My thoughts are, what if I flashtool GB .62 and install a pre-rooted kernel, will it work? Which kernel?
My main objective: have the latest stock GB rooted.
Thanks!

The fact is that I have unlocked boot loader, which makes OTA update unlikely.

Thanks, I managed this afternoon. I flashed .62 GB with Sony Emma and then installed latest DoomKernel for gingerbread and flashed RootXperia.zip.
Gingerbread is much faster and camera is awesome, but geez, If I had never used ICS or JB it would be ok, but it's just when we use a previous version that we realize how much things have improved since GB. I can't use it. I'll probably try Jelly Sandwich tomorrow.

What exactly is this BIG crucial thing you are missing from ICS? I also used ICS for almost 2 months, and get back to GB with no problems at all. I just realised how MUCH more this phone is productive and usable with GB.
And I can name you few big things ICS lacks compared to GB.
Gaming performance is ridiculous, as well as overal smoothness, compared to GB. HD recording is better in GB, and wi-fi is better. Battery life is better. Every single app is faster. Browsing web is better.
When you see this things, it turns that every thing crucial for an smartphone is better, so someone is willing to abandon all this, just for the sake of having "new" fancy software, even it's crippled quite a lot, compared to "old" one.

In fact, I miss small improvements, such as status bar. I'll try to numerate somethings I miss:
1) In JB I could read my new email right from Status Bar, without the need to open gmail;
2) I could just swipe to remove some notifications from the status bar;
3) Roboto font-family looks better in ICS+ (but I could live without);
4) Gmail has more features in ICS+, yeah I know it's google's fault;
5) I had toggles (wifi, gps, rotate, torch) right from the status bar in JB AOKP - this is what I most miss;
6) Battery percentage with circular icon in status bar;
7) Ability to access camera faster through lock screen (I installed Holo Locker, but sometimes it doesn't work).
I also tried Jelly Bean Statusbar (from play store), but it lacks all features above.
mr_torture, if you could point some ways to bring these items back to GB (I'm using GB yet) I would be very glad , especially item 5 (status bar toggles).

Each to their own, I don't find ICS to be that bad, especially when it's been tweaked a little and from what I've read on here GB is only really better for those that like to play a lot of games on their Phone.
Yeah, I know there are some small fancy things which holds you from going back, and they kept me also for almost two months.
There's no doubt that fully working ICS is much better than fully working GB, noone will argue that.
I'm just saying that ICS implementation for this phone is not among the best, mostly because of crappy performance. Everything else could be lived with, but those lags are just pain in the a.s.s.
Yes, gmail is very limited in GB, and yes, the Roboto font is looking better, and yes, ICS user interface is sleeker and coherent...
But when you balance all good vs bad things, somehow it all comes down to speed and usability. And GB is clear winner there.
Regarding this bulleted number 5, there are at least three options I can think of:
1. Notification Toggle
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwiZGUuajR2ZWxpbi5ub3RpZmljYXRpb25Ub2dnbGUiXQ..
2. Power Toggles
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5wYWlubGVzcy5wYyJd
3. Elixir 2

I'm talking about stock GB vs stock ICS.
Yeah, it's better for those who would like to play games from time to time, who would like to have better WiFi coverage, who would like to from-wake-to-capture photos fast, who would like to record unchoppy videos, who would like to perform multitasking without phone going almost unresponsive, etc etc...
Yes, ICS is more fancy, is having small improvements, is looking better, is "new" software, etc etc... But in terms of actual performance and real life usability, it's uncomparable with GB.
I installed Notification Toggle and it's running fine! Thanks!

You can try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mh1YmFsZWsuYW5kcm9pZC5hcHBzLnJlYm9ybi5wcm8iXQ..
Free version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ibmV0Lmh1YmFsZWsuYW5kcm9pZC5yZWJvcm4uYmV0YSJd
This will add icon on left edge of status bar. But it's not free, and your top right battery icon will remain there. If you want to replace battery icon then search for some custom status bar mods in "Theme & Apps" section.
There are some other apps in play store capable of adding circuar battery icon, but I'm in lazy mode currently.

[MOD][GB 2.3.4] Modded ICS inspired UI with toggles
Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
For me ics is unasble on our devices because of the horrible multitasking. I get better batterylife on ics and i think the interface looks better plus there are some nice features like swiping notifications and using the notificationbar in lockscreen. but if i start switching between my apps quickly (Whatsapp, Browser, Xda, Messages, Facebook, IMDB) every app has to load from start everytime i switch. this doesnt happen in gb and thats the main reason for me to stay on gb.

and if youre using miui whats the cons? pros??

i went from liberty to stock gb for a list of small reasons
(not to say liberty isnt awesome)
I'm personally running CM7 and it kicks ass... just hold power button for screen shot option

Fast

Isn't the camera limited to 8MP with no widescreen capability? That was a show stopper for me when I tried it a couple of months ago
I am currently running MIUI 1.9.16.1 and I just love it. I have also used Liberty and CM7. Both are great but I love the battery life, customizability and smoothness of MIUI.
I just installed Cyanogenmod last night and I love it. It's fast, seems stable, and has tons of customization options. I also liked Liberty, except for the pee yellow color (I'm sure there's a theme to change that), but I wasn't a fan of MIUI. It looked very polished, but it was like some weird iPhone wannabe, and wasn't as smooth or fast as Cyanogenmod.
Which version of CM7 are you using. I'm thinking of trying it out but I'm not sure which nightly to go with.

The mod version is 7.1.0-RC0 and the build number is GRH78C.
I'm personally on Liberty 0.9 Gingerbread.
While it's great for a Beta ROM, it hasn't been updated in a LONG time, and there are still some outstanding bugs that are starting to get a little annoying. It turns out one of the Devs left, and the other was planning on working on a version of the ROM called Justice based on CM7. I'd use it any day over stock, but I'd love to see some work done on it.
It looks like the DX is reaching the end of it's development sadly, too bad it didn't have a run like the OG Droid.
Anyway, for those of you using CM7, is there anything that's still not working?
Last I read, things like GPS still weren't working, which in all honesty is completely unacceptable for me. My phone is my "every" device; MP3 Player, GPS, Phone, etc etc.
How's the battery life on CM7? It's not great on Liberty, but maybe my battery is getting a bit old.

I was a firm believer in Liberty back in the day.
Then Kejar left and the team went to hell.
Liberty 0.9 is still a DECENT rom though.
Try it out if you're used to the stock experience.
But if you're feeling brave...
I was a FIRM believer in CM7 for a long while.
PROS
-Adjust screen brightness by swiping the status bar
-Take a screenshot by holding power until the option comes up
-Change songs by holding the volume button up/down while the screen is off
-Pause music with camera button while screen is off
-Tmobile themes (You don't need to flash ANYTHING to theme CM7. You simply open the "Themes" Application and swap out a new one [found in the market or online] and it themes your phone without even rebooting!) *Rebooting is recommended for most themes...but you can get the feel of a theme in 5 seconds rather than flashing it...rebooting...checking...deciding you don't like it...flash stock back...yada yada yada*
-FAST I get scores of 3000 in Quadrant running at 1.2ghz.
-%1 battery icon in the status bar (on official froyo kernel only. the "unofficial" gingerbread builds still haven't gotten this working yet).
-Yes, GPS works fine. Everything works fine.
-Lockscreen can have a separate wallpaper.
-Control bar is built into the status bar (change brightness/turn on wifi/etc)
CONS
-No HDMI (I didn't use it anyway)
-No 720p video recording
*These are both RUMORED to be being worked on. Who knows.
I recently, however switched to the newest MIUI build.
http://rootzwiki.com/showthread.php?6392-ROM-MIUI.us-1.9.23
I recommend it HIGHLY.
PROS
-Fast, once again. Same speeds as CM7, it seems.
-THEMES. Woah buddy. Themes are a HUGE part of MIUI.
--You download themes from within a theme application...and they once again, theme your phone without the need of a reboot. The best part is, you can swap out pieces of themes for other pieces if you don't like the whole theme.
I'm rocking a theme on the status bar by one dev...a lockscreen by another...a sms by another...yada yada yada.
-Lockscreens...OMG lockscreens. The lockscreens are AWESOME. There are literally HUNDREDS of options for lockscreens. They are changed via the "themes" application...but woah buddy. These aren't just themes.
There are ICS-like lockscreens. Lockscreens that you can drag in like 10 directions depending on what application you want to open.
http://forums.miui.us/showthread.ph...s-lockscreen-theme-collection-new-theme-26-08 there are some good examples in there.
-A little-known trick...MIUI takes screenshots...faster than CM7 =]
--Hold menu+volume down = instant screenshot.
--*Holding menu+volume up = turns your brightness all the way up!
-Fastboot option (rather than a full reboot) is in the power-menu along with bootloader, full reboot, stock recovery, cwm recovery.
-Control-widget's are, again, built into the status bar (change brightness/turn on wifi/etc).
-Blacklist people from calling/texting you by simply adding them to a list available in the contacts app.
-Reply with text message to ignored calls.
-Blur-like dialer in that you can search via t9 for a contact...rather than memorizing the number or opening the contacts list.
-Lockscreens, again, can have custom wallpapers.
-If you're on your phone, a message pops up at the top of the screen when you get an sms that allows you to reply directly without closing the app you're in.
CONS
-No HDMI
-No 720p
*The 720p IS being worked on...haven't heard about the hdmi.
Thanks. I think I'll check out MIUI this weekend.

Well i already installed it wit infamous 2 but i dont like it. I think touchwiz in this rom look horrible, with colors that in personal i dont like it. And many features like face unlock are not in this upgrade. What do you think?
Other than face unlock, for which I have absolutely no use for, whats missing?
+ Beats HC and the former ICS/JB custom ROMS by a mile.
+ Runs great, especially the browser.
+ Looks good, but I like stock JB better, nothing to bad though.
too big font, too bright color, ugly locking screen, lost about 200MB RAM.
All other things are great.
Its touchwiz again. I think it looks horrible and i hope cm10 will get the camera drivers soon.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda app-developers app
As far as performance is concerned it is great, a big step forward compared to previous ROMs or other custom firmware. Unfortunately, it is bloated with Touchwiz apps which are not necessary since there are Google equivalent apps that do the job perfectly well.
However, the biggest issue for me is the fact that it has no consistent user interface, a problem common to all non-stock Android versions. The Samsung apps have their own Touchwiz user interface while all other apps use the standard ICS user interface elements and colours. Some system elements like the Settings panel and various pop up windows utilise the Touchwiz graphical elements while others the standard ICS elements. Even the arrows that allow the user to select a piece of text look completely different depending on whether one is running a Samsung app or a standard Android one!
In my opinion, it is important for an OS which depends heavily on the user interface, like tablet and phone OSes, to have a common and standard look and feel not only for cosmetic purposes but also to ensure that the users are not confused and all apps look consistent with a specific design philosophy so that users can easily locate menus and other elements. This is the biggest failure of Touchwiz and as a result the overall look and feel of this firmware is strange with bright and colourful user interface elements when Touchwiz is used and dark black and blue elements when running standard Android apps.
Notice here that I am not judging the quality of Touchwiz vs standard ICS and some people prefer the one instead of the other. I am saying that whatever the choice of user inteface it has to be consistent throughout the system and third-party apps. Personally, I prefer the standard ICS user inteface but this is not the point of my argument.
I hope that third-party Android developers will use the updated libraries of this firmware as well as the camera drivers to produce a fully functioning standard ICS or Jelly Bean ROM through projects like CM9/CM10 for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I am one of those who actually MUCH prefer Touchwiz and the other Samsung apps, added settings and personalizations (for example the overlay mini-apps and the now configurable screenshot button are extremely handy and I hate the "2-steps" notification bar in non-TW ROMs) so for me this ROM is GREAT.
I have never been interested in the least in face-unlock, I have always used the pattern lockscreen.
What I would have liked to see in this ROM are the SIM application toolkit, the numbers top row in the keyboard (like in all the recent Samsung keyboards) and the battery percentage.
P.S. that said, if the G.Tab 10.1 isn't going to get an official JB update from Samsung I am sure that at some point, once it matures, I will go back to CM10...

I'm as happy as a pig in ****, now I might use it for more than a glorified Netflix machine.
That was the thing with the custom ICS/JB roms is that they were so unstable and brought literally nothing to the table besides being someone else's opinion on what they thought I wanted.
I want stability and I want good, official looking apps. Not File Manager HD with its advertising aids and not some bright ass boot animation that blinds me every time I have to reboot because it froze overnight.
But I digress.
I think this release by Samsung is quite amazing, and it will hold me off long enough till I decide to buy a newer model Galaxy Tab.
At the rate Samsung is going they are going to be my new favorite company. Not just because of this update, for numerous other dealings as well.

The new version is definitely a step ahead. It seems Swype is usable now, although it still lags a bit but at least it can keep up with typing for me not like earlier versions.
I also like it and I guess touchwiz is inevitable. Desktop customization has been upgraded too which is very useful.
If something else could be asked is a tad more smoothness when switching desktops and probably one last push update to jelly bean for increased smoothness.
We'll see in the coming days with extended use. For.me :good:

Yes!!! This was probably the first thing I checked once the install had finished. I love Swype but it was pretty much unusable in stock HC on the tab. No more automatic deleting of the last two characters when typing a search into the browser!!!
From my perspective it's a it early to give an opinion but it's looking good so far although my quadrant score has taken a nosedive (yes, I know that doesn't mean anytihgn in reality)
Lagging playback on some HD videos.

First of all, this is in no way a criticism of the Rom devs who have released JB Roms so far, and its not trolling, just my observations on the JB Roms (based on what we have seen so far).
I've been running CleanNote 6 with Speedmod for a few months now (with a few mods - removed lots of bloat, added Google Now, new Gmail etc). Its very fast, smooth, and has brilliant battery life. But like most people on here, I've been trying out the JB Roms since they first appeared. Problem is, I keep coming back to CleanNote. Maybe some of these can be resolved once Samsung decides to finish JB for the Note, although some appear to be features rather than bugs.
So here's my list of moans
- Overall, its no where near as 'smooth' as CleanNote - this will hopefully improve once JB is officially out - (or maybe a new speedmod will come out for JB?)
- The Gallery - there's that 'stutter' whenever you load an album that isn't there in CleanNote (again, should be fixed in official release) Images often appear pixelated for a second before clearing up - not a problem in LRQ/CleanNote Roms.
- The new Notification drop down looks ugly for me - personal taste but not for me
- Font sizes are too big - system fonts are too large, changing to tiny or small makes third party apps look odd (hopefully fixed in official release)
- The share / open with dialogues are not as nice - the list in 4.0.4 LRQ works great - the icon / grid system in JB is awkward (eg click to open a link from twitter and it asks you which browser to use - instead of a nice neat list we have a messy grid of icons.
- Not able to access app info directly from the app drawer.
These next ones might be more controversial
- AirView - not really sure why this is useful - its novel, but can't imagine using it - maybe better on a large tablet size device but not jumping at me as something I would ever need.
- MultiView - nice idea, but even with the Note's large screen, you are left with two windows that aren't really practical to work with . I tried to look at a map and website at the same time - it worked, but it was pointless - much better to switch between than try to manage both at once. On a 10 inch tablet I can see this as useful maybe though.
- Paper Artist - not interested - its just a novelty app - pretty pointless really.
Things I do like
- The launcher bug from LRQ 4.0.4 is gone (apps on SD would vanish from homescreen on restart)
- Long app names run to two lines rather than just cutting off like they used to
On previous phones (Galaxy S, Desire, Desire HD), I've quickly ended up on CM or MIUI based roms - but with the note it seems silly to lose the unique features you only get with a TW Roms.
These are just my thoughts based on the leaks we have seen so far -
Please feel free to disagree and convince me otherwise (or ignore if you like!) -but don't accuse me of trolling or start flaming - I'm just sharing my ideas.
I agree with you on that, a lot of the jb features are gimmicks and probably won't get used that often.
But that doesn't mean no one will ever use them some people may find it really useful?
I agree that ics (expecially clean note) is a lot smoother than jb but I believe mainly this is because jb is still kind of in beta stage so it's an unfinished release.
The galaxy s2 has had jb update but it requires being updated via Kies only as the whole device needs to be repartitioned taking up to 1 hour to complete.
Maybe something similar will be required for the note? If it does require repartitioning it may solve some of the existing issues such as memory leaking and storage issues and general lagging.
Who knows? All we can do and see what happens when it's released.

+1 and addition to this when you are in settings and tap on a option like display it takes 2-3 seconds to open and show some glitch and also the boot menu i don't like it.. but i love jb so i switched to official cm 10.1 it's so smooth

After almost two months of trying various JB roms last week I returned back to Rocket Rom V12 and what a difference it made. So yesterday I went online to write similar thoughts to yours but got destructed by a post and spent my time reading it instead. All I can do now is to say: +1 on that
Thanks for replies
I'm pretty sure that the smoothness will come in the official release - I just tried the latest version of BURTROM and its pretty nice - Usable as a daily driver if you feel like you have to have JB already.
Final thought - I guess that the JB update will be the last major official OS update for our Notes - the S4 and Note 3 will be out this year (and who knows how many others) - our old Notes will be 2 years old and I guess many of us will be upgrading soon anyway. We will have had 2 major updates (GB>ICS>JB) which is 2 more than most Androids get anyway. This time next year it will be S3 and Note 2 owners complaining about the updates that take months and don't work as well as the old versions!
Why did you make a new thread and why didn't you use the existing ones for JB discussions?

CleanNote 6 + NoteCore 14 was the best combo for me on TW - with best batt life on my device
- (also previous user of imilkas PA 0,4)
Playing with JB leaks from the first one - and now back to ICS again. We have now leaks only, so there is no need to be dissapointed. The thing is, even with release of Note2, samsung pushed all of its features into this "old" device. Hardware is still capable, but in term of bussines is our device no more interersting for samsung - so their move to bring up those features is simply great when you compare other makers. For sure those features might be just "gimmick" - but it will definitelly aim me to buy next Samsung device....and i believe the same for SOME current S2 S3 users,
Ask your friend what new he got with JB on HTC, Sony etc...new sets of icons and weather widget???
JB so on my N1 far:
-smoother launcher (who cares about small lags on ICS - but i know that a lot of people just care about lag in the launcher...)
-loading apps - definitelly a bit quicker on ICS
-bat life - might be on par stock ICS/stock JB
-Gallery JB - i like it more then ICS but there are also other PlayStore alternatives
-AirView - nice feature but really never used it that much, so...
-multiview stock - also do not use as i use something else...
When you debloat JB then it is better (in that case BurtRom is nice performer, and chipwizz went even further to debloat
Samsung also lost a lot of N2 customers that wanted to switch from N1 (like myself), cause we have got the same features (but N2 is definitelly better specced device), but for me as a "non gamer" N2s quadcore has no meaning untill (probably N3).
What i would expect from N3 - is full phablet mini PC with ability to stick HDMI screen and perform standard office tasks. I can do it now, but there is problem somewhere else..so hopefully multitasking in next android will be better. Hopefully N3 will not bring just bigger screen...
All well said. I am simply sticking to leaked jb(ultimate 5.1) without going back to ics with a fond hope that official jb will be rolling out soon.

if upgrading to official JB on Note will involve repartitioning then i hope we can still go back and forth between older ics ..leak jbs.....aosp...cm roms. hope our experts will advise us accordingly

Hi all!
As probably many of You I love stock android for its stellar performance, smoothness and neat simple design. With that being said I still like some HTC features and stock stability. Maybe we could find a developer to make a google play edition like rom for our M9?
This is how I see it:
2.10.401.1 stock 5.1 rom base
vanilla / google like navbar
vanilla status bar / quick setting
vanilla multitasking cards ( with translucent navbar and with full size google search bar )
vanilla statusbar icons / centered clock / percentage batery indicator (like in htc sense)
extended vanilla settings app
google now launcher / nova / sense home
stock google dialer
messenger sms app
android m calculator
google keyboard app
htc camera app
htc gallery app
htc status bar
htc or google lockscreen
stock 5.1 bootanimation
debloat / performance / battery / camera improvements
I'm new to building roms/porting stuff but i think that most of the things needed already exists. Maybe we could find a developer keen on building this google play edition like rom so that we could have one
Let me know if and of You would be intrested to help me build one or if You like this idea

Pretty sure viper had a desense install option and one of the SD team roms claim to be desensed as well. One of those might be worth a look.
Thats true but unfortunately it's nothing like stock experience. 'Desensed' viper is still sense based, with sense navbar, sense settings, multitasking, quick settings etc. Desense option just delete sense launcher and some bloatware.
I'll collect files needed to build my 'dream' vanilla rom and maybe one day someone will cook it with me.
You can pretty much do all that you want to do with Viper, you can change the navbar to whatever you want with themes, the multitasking is selectable with sense, you can theme the status bar like stock, the quick settings and settings are pretty much stock like already. Once you install Now launcher and the Google apps, you would have a pretty much Nexus looking device with a few extras. Many have done this already. It's not worth trying to get someone to build another ROM while what you want already exists.

well.. I couldn't find even one theme that changes statusbar icons/navbar to stock android.. also there is no theme that could change feel of the quick settings, pure one works quite different. I've also found themes to slow down the phone and it stutters there and there even without them.. Multitasking cards that htc offers are also a bit different than pure google ones - navbar is not completely translucent, cards often dont show app content.. also those horrible settings dots placed next to the google search bar.
I generally believe that there is space for one more rom, especially that there is no oven one google play edition like rom right now.
I've attatched a few screenshots, the difference is.. critical IMO

Well it seems like cm is close and the only major bug left is that the camera doesn't work, so if you can live without that, you should try it out.

Did you ever try the viper rom? Doesn't sound like you did. Statusbar icons and stock android navbar can be found on the venom hub. The quick settings can be adjusted to your likes via venom tweaks. Never noticed any stutters on viper and card view always showed app content, too.
Edit: Or you combine CM with this xposed module. But as jollywhitefoot already said the camera doesn't work at the moment.
@jollywhitefoot - yes I'm basicly looking for a CM with a working camera, or to be exact for AOSP like rom.
@Flippy498 - I did.. viper was the first rom i flashed on my M9 , but i quickly switched to maximus because I ws looking for sth performing better. *note* I'm performance freak, I'm very picky, You might don't care about few droped frames - I do, and I see droped frames while opening multitasking on both viper and maximus ( only on card view ) It would this rom could have performance of the s6.
Anyway I'll give Viper a second chance and try Your tips, thanks

Man, for a "noob" you sure are specific! Haha.
What do you mean by dropped frames in recents? I'm on ice and it's full sense, but I don't notice anything laggy or stuttery in recents there is a slight delay when opening recents (fractions of a second while the cards populate). I'm also getting over 60k antutu out of the box at room temp.
@jollywhitefoot
I'm talking about that slight delay when opening multitasking window. Also I'm noob while it comes to building roms, I'm not new to android/xda/flashing roms.
+ I don't care abous benchmarks, but I'm freak while it comes to fluidity and real world performance. I also pay attention to little things like animations and those little things.

Edit, actually I only get that slight delay when I'm on the home screen. If I press recent from inside any app, it's smooth as silk.
I had nexus 5 and on 5.0 (and under) there is delay but on 5.1 its like butter, also quick settings works differently ( than sense settings) they are nicely animated and so on..

Lol. Quite an arsenal. Where's your G4 and S6???
@jollywhitefoot
I hate design of G4 outside and inside, not a big fan of samsung as well. would rather have z3+ ( z3+ over m9 any day, but the price gap between them in poland is well, huge. 475USD for m9 and 795 for z3+ )
Going back to the main subject I'll talk with some guys and maybe will build with them the rom I'm waiting for. ( It will be like elix-r / elixium for nexus5 / m8 )
To be honest, if you want this best experience with vanilla android, it is best to get a device with it preinstalled and then even if you want to run custom roms, there are no issues. Personally, I was looking to get the Nexus 6, but didn't like the overly large screen. Now, I'm waiting to see what the Moto X 2015 brings to the table. Although, after having my M9 for a while now, I'm not sure I would switch. I'm loving being back on Sense. I also love the build quality of this device, but there is nothing special about the hardware. The one thing that is the best about this device is what you are wanting to remove, HTC Sense 7.
@ fernandezhjr
Thats quite obvious that its best to buy device with vanilla android preinstaled. I just don't like nexus 6 ( size, and looks) and I needed a phone so i bought one m9 for many reasons. I like its build quality, speakers and metal unibody and after updates the camera is not that bad ( although slow motion and video in general sucks )
With the right software I could be very satisfied , now I'm looking for that software. I like some elements of sense ( like its camera ui) or its lockscreen clock. But there are things like its quick settings that are just plain fugly ( to me of course)
I find the quick settings panel to be somewhat similar to the one I had on my Nexus 4. You can download the Google camera from the playstore. Try some different lauchers to find something you may like. The clock is just a widget. There are plenty of clocks available in the Playstore.

Already posted screenshots showing the difference, it may be simmilar but its far from being the same. As mentioned before I'm running nova launcher and i like htc stock camera interface. + I know it just a clock and there are thousands of clocks on the playstore and around the internet I was just saying that I like some parts of htc sense.
Coming from Samsung and Sony where there was a big difference are all Roms basically the same base on the X Style. Are there differences that I should be aware of?
Thanks
Edit Title should say AOSP!

I'd say the only reason to go cutom ROM on this phone would be customization. The stock ROM is pretty reliable, fast, and easy on the battery. Especially if you start tuning up the custom kernels how you like them.
Stock doesn't feel like it's dragging a frickin boat anchor or god awful at memory management like on a Samsung. This phone doesn't have an ugly, laggy vendor skin. With MM (and root) you can use RRO layers to theme it - no custom ROM required. I've run custom ROMs for years because...Samsung. I'm kind of tired of flaky bluetooth, FCs, and stuff that just doesn't quite work right but is better than Touchwiz.
The only thing I'd really like to have that custom ROMs make available would be double tap status bar to sleep, status bar brightness slider, and notification led; most everything else honestly goes in the stuff I don't use / forget about category (well...slim recents would be nice too). You could tackle most of that with XPosed too, but that brings its own baggage. I've tried out a few of the custom ROM offerings, and for now I keep going back to stock. They're good, but not good enough for me to give up that stock stability when stock is so close to pure AOSP. We have Multirom too, so that makes test driving multiple ROMs really easy.
As for AOSP vs. CM, I'm pretty sure all the custom ROMs you'll find here have a CM base. You can find Broken for this phone too, and it usually uses an AOSP-CAF base. I haven't actually checked Broken out yet.

Thanks for the reply... I think I'm more concerned about flashing the wrong kernel.
For example I'm used to say flashing a Stock kernel on my Z2 Sony ROM, I could opt for CM Rom and know I need CM kernel. This difference seem so much more blurred here on the Moto X Style.
Also for example we have BlissPure, PureBliss, FrakenClark and Stock optimised [@VadimTk] there doesn't seem to be an easy way of knowing which ROMs they can be flashed on.
I'm new to Moto's so learning fast!
Frankenclark and vadim's are stock.
Bliss is for cm base.
The frankenclark dev dirtyhank has been bringing some great features lately, and hashbang has been picking them up and baking them into his aicp builds too.

I've tried that with Nova, but you have to double tap blank space on a screen, not an app or widget. I actually have swipe up mapped to screen off with Nova because that seems to work anywhere. I agree it's a pretty good substitute.
I think I could get everything I want/need with stock and xposed. I'll maybe root this weekend and see how I on with rooted stock mm...

Coming from Samsung to Motorola my only complaint really about stock is missing features that I just wouldn't expect to be missing. The two that stick out most for me is the lack of a number row on the stock keyboard and a lack of an interface for a clipboard for copy and paste. Obviously a lot of these things can be supplemented with apps and mods but that kinda defeats the purpose of having a stock experience.
Edit: Oh and no option for battery percent in the status bar but I found a trick to enable that without any modifications.

Data/network indicators, centre clock. I use google KB, so have the numbers.
Not sure what you mean by no copy/paste clipboard?

Y'all two care to share your little trick? I haven't come across center clock on Moto Stock without using Xposed.

Sorry, xposed IS needed for centre clock AFAIK...
I personally hate CM. Ever since my first Android phone I've always avoided it. I tried BlissROM and wasn't happy with it. I haven't used an AOSP ROM for any phone since my MyTouch4G. The ROM I'm currently using is TruePureX, and it's been going great. It's stock, but without bloat and a few added features. Then I add Xposed and GravityBox and it's perfect.

On my Samsung Galaxy S5 there was a clipboard where I could manage previously cut and copied content, not just the last item.

The trick allows you to enable the battery percentage as well as a few other things and can be found here.
