hi everyone,
There is an guide for installing multirom to the nexus 7 here that will allow for dual boot of android and Ubuntu:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011403
My question is that I am unsure how to flash the multirom zip file through recovery.
model: Nexus 7
android version: 4.2.1
build number: JOP40D
I have a laptop running Ubuntu 12.04.
Had issues to mount nexus (despite setting the USB to developer mode) but could mount it using a GUI tool called gMTP.
I copied the multirom zip file to the root of the android file system using gMTP
I unlocked the bootloader also using fastboot.
However, I dont get an option when I boot into recovery mode to install the multirom zip file.
Any tips are greatlt welcomed.
I'd like to keep android and install ubuntu separately rather than just installing Ubuntu according to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Nexus7/Installation
regards,
Will.
You'll want to copy or move the file from the root directory to /sdcard
Then assuming you're using TWRP recovery, once you boot into recovery go to Install and choose the zip file.
It will default to looking in the sdcard directory.
Edit:
Re-read, and you may not have a custom recovery installed yet. To do that, go here.
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/103
Download the img file, place it in the same directory your running the fastboot commands from, and do a fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.2.1-grouper.img
To boot into the new recovery hold volume down and power while booting up. Use volume keys to select recovery and then hit power to select.
is this actually possible? what advantages could we have from booting ubuntu in nexus 7?
Thanks regalpimpin

When I run gMTP from my laptop I only see the following directories on the Nexus 7:
Alarms
Android
DCIM
Download
Movies
Music
Notifications
Pictures
Podcasts
Ringtones
Perhaps this is the sdcard directory that contains these subdirectories. is this correct?

Yes, one can boot Ubuntu from the Nexus
I have a use for it. Rather than carrying a laptop to international conferences, I have a use for Ubuntu to for example install a latex editor and tex in order to produce/edit/modify research paper presentations while travelling.

I got Ubuntu installed using multirom.
However, I can' seem to boot the androind (Internal) option.
When it tries to boot into android to prints output to the screen and then hangs with the following last 3 lines:
BusyBox v1.19.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.19.3-7ubuntu) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)
Any ideas? Shoud I have also installed a new android rom from:

I have figured out a way to permanently install ClockworkMod Recovey on your hybrid WebOS/CyanogenMod Touchpad. Like many of you, my ClockworkMod installation failed when I tried to install using ACMEInstaller while I also installed CyanogenMod.
I realize there is now a workaround to "inject" ClockworkMod into your TP using novacom however this requires you to utilize a computer everytime you want to boot ClockworkMod. Follow the instructions below to install ClockworkMod onto your TP permanently and free yourself from your PC!
1. Boot into WebOS
2. Mount TP to your computer and create a "cminstall" folder if it no longer exists after your CyanogenMod installation
3. Copy the "update-cwm_tenderloin-1012.zip" file into the "cminstall" directory, then unmount TP from computer
4. Download the "Internalz Pro" program using the "Preware" application in WebOS if you haven't already (Google is your friend if you get stuck here)
5. Open "Internalz Pro" and navigate to the "boot" menu (will most likely require you to tap the top-most icon of a folder with two dots next to it to get to the root of the TP - should be second folder down)
6. Tap on the file "uImage.ClockworkMod" and select "move"
7. Navigate to the "media/internal/" directory and click "select" to move file
8. Now tap on the file "update-uimage" and move the file to the same "internal" directory you did in step #7
9. Exit from "Internalz Pro" and reboot device while holding down the up volume key, which will take you in to WebOS Recovery (or select WebOS Recovery when you get to the moboot screen you may have previously installed) - you should now see a large USB icon and should be connected to your computer using a usb cable
10. Go to your command prompt in Windows and navigate to the menu where you have novacom installed - you should also have the ACMEInstaller binary file copied into this directory by now (If you don't know what I'm talking about, remember Google is your friend)
11. Type in "novacom boot mem:// < ACMEInstaller" in the command line and press enter
12. You should now see ClockworkMod recovery installing on your TP - Once it reboots into moboot select "boot ClockworkMod" and watch it boot into ClockworkMod!
13. After celebrating, boot back into WebOS, go into "Internalz Pro" and move the file "update-uimage" back into the "boot" directory - the "uImage.ClockworkMod" file that you put in the "Internal" directory is no longer needed since you reinstalled ClockworkMod properly
Essentially the boot directory was overloaded which caused for insufficient space when installing ClockworkMod. Now you should be able to boot into WebOS, CyanogenMod, WebOS, AND ClockworkMod Recovery without a computer. As always, I do not take responsibility for you bricking your TP or variability you may have... use this information if it is helpful but don't blame me if something goes wrong. I'm just trying to help out the community that has helped me for so long.
Let me know if this is helpful to you. Thanks!

What!?
Hi!
firstly, thank you for making this guide, i know that alot of people like myself will appreciate it.
but i've run into a problem, see, now i don't have the option to boot into cyanogenmod anymore !
can i flash it in clockworkmod, or do i have to do it all over again?
a reply would be appreciated
you most likely copied the wrong file from the boot folder, as there was one for clockworkmod and one for cyanogen mod... look and see if you incorrectly copied the cyanogenmod "uImage.CyanogenMod" to your internal sd card to free up space. You will have to move this back to the boot folder and grab the other one.
Thank you VERY much!
and thanks for the INCREDIBLY quick reply!
EDIT: IT WORKED!!! YOU'RE THE MAN!!!!!
No problem... let me know if that solved your concern...thx
EDIT: Oh, just saw the edit of your post...great, glad that was it!
Just wondering... how permanent is permanent?
For instance, if I use "web doctor" to restore my touchpad, will the recovery be overwritten?
Yes, I just mean that you don't have to "inject" clockworkmod into your TP using your computer which was the workaround for the people who couldn't get it installed originally during the CyanogenMod installation. This just installs it properly but can be wiped with WebOS Doctor like anything else...

Yeap... it will not delete a single bit of CM7, just gonna restore the original bootloaders, delete moboot and skip CWM /Android on boot...
Running again ACME with only moboot and CWM in the cminstall folder will restore them.
....After WebOS doctor... it will show CM7 as the last time you shut it down.

I followed directions exactly but I am not seeing the uImage.clockwork in the boot folder. Any suggestions? I see that file in the cminstall folder, do I just leave in there or should I copy directly to media\internal?

The "uImage.ClockworkMod" may not be in the boot directory I suppose if the previous install attempts didn't put it there so not sure why it isn't in yours. Essentially you are just trying to move some of the larger files out of that directory so you can install ClockworkMod properly as the space constraint of the partition size seems to be the issue. The other file I mentioned, "update-uimage", is actually the largest one I found and you may be able to do the ClockworkMod install properly by only removing that one temporarily. Let us know if you are able to resolve.
I've installed clockworkmod recovery with no errors on the first try, is it advisable that I need to use this method?
I was installing cwm for the first time. I didn't include it originally with the install of cyanogen mod, I guess that's why it wasn't in the boot folder. I placed both files in the media\internal directory and also inside the cminstall folder and ran the command and it worked fine. When I checked internalz pro to remove the files, the cminstall folder and uimage files were gone already. So it looks like I am good to go. cwm is working, I flashed gapps from it. Thanks for reply.
Now I just need to figure out how to make phone calls.

If you installed ClockworkMod completely the first time and it works, then you definitely don't need to do this as this thread was intended for those that tried to install it at the same time as when they installed CyanogenMod and ClockworkMod Recovery didn't install properly. These instructions are to outline how to get it installed correctly as just trying again using ACMEInstaller wasn't working for anyone due to the small size left in the boot directory.
hey thanks for the fix but after the fix i cant get into the market
Not sure why you can't access the market...no issues here. I would suggest reinstalling the gapps zip file and possible the market fix file that are out there now that you have clockworkmod working properly.
thanks for the help thats what i had to do
Hi, the "move" option isn't available, only "copy" "info" and "open"
The entire directory is "view-only"
Not sure why "move" isn't available for you... its been a while since I installed Preware and Internalz Pro so I must have gotten root access somehow and that's why it shows up for me and others. I'd suggest searching for how to obtain root access to WebOS to find your answer... possibly development mode if you haven't already done that but I thought that was required to get Preware installed in the first place.

After Opening "Internalz Pro", Open "Preferences", scroll down to the bottom. You will see an option called "Master mode". Turn it on. You will get read/write access to the boot folder.
I am trying to root my new Nexus 4 and I am stumped. I am trying to follow efrant's instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
I successfully completed part D and now am trying to work through part E. I am stuck at step 3 of E: I downloaded SuperSU v 0.98 (is that really the one to get?) and I'm supposed to put that in /sdcard. Where is /sdcard? There is no SD Card in a Nexus 4. Is this a hidden folder somewhere? Do I have to make it? How can I see that folder? I am using a Mac and the Android File Transfer program window shows no sdcard folder anywhere.
Also: Why does another unlock guide talk (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179) about pressing "Build Number" seven times? Why doesn't efrant's guide mention this?
I don't follow this part at all. How do I put that damn file where it needs to be?
Just download the N4 toolkit. Will do everything you want.

When you plug the phone into the computer /sdcard is the folder that comes up. Just place it in there.

DO NOT USE TOOLKITS. Especially if you're new to modding.
That's like saying, I want to overclockmy computer. Just give me a toolkit where I can one click and overclock my computer.
Read more here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1469909
Do it the proper way and download ADB drivers
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1514942 (enable USB debugging)
set up ADB environment
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
unlock bootloader on phone
download clockwork recovery or TWRP (i suggest TWRP)
put the .img file of recovery into your /platform-tools/
fastboot flash recovery <name-of-file>.img
then boot into recovery and there you can flash your ROM, gapps, kernel.
In the long run, IT WILL PAY OFF because eventually YOU will be faced with a problem with your phone and you won't be able to recover your phone because you dont know basic fastboot or adb commands all simply because you wanted to use a toolkit. People are already asking on how to use adb / fastboot in Q&A, we can reduce the clutter by not having people use toolkits and actually learning how adb / fastboot works when it isn't a very complicated thing to do at all
As stated in my original post, I am using a Mac. Not a PC. Therefore I don't use ADB, nor any other drivers. I also do not see, as stated before, any sdcard folder. I don't, I repeat, don't see it.

On the Nexus 4, /sdcard is the same as /storage/emulated/0. As mentioned earlier in the thread, this is the default location for native USB file transfer.

Hi All,
I wanted to update my ideos s7-104 (best buy US) to the Joenilan froyo fusion rom and made one mistake along the way. I copied the .zip file to the external sd card not the internal sd card. So zip file is not available to CWM (2.5.1.8). I tried manually pushing the file to the tablet with ADB (from computer) but the tablet is not visible to the system (windows 7 64bit with drivers installed, I could not get HiSuite to install with upgrade.cmd). This is strange becasue the Upgrade utility which uses adb flashes the rom just fine. Of course I wiped the system and reformatted the device per the instructions. Now when the unit boots it goes the fastboot and then stops with option to reboot with back/home which works. I don't think the unit is bricked just yet since I can still get into the CWM recovery.
Does anyone have any bright ideas to move the Ideos S7 Froyo v1.3-EXT4 Stable.zip to the internal sdcard?
Thanks for all the useful information previously posted!

Hi, let see if i can help you, if you have a backup restore, if you dont that implies some work, i dont use windows i prefer linux, you can try to create a virtual machine, with windows xp or linux ubuntu and then with fastboot commands push the file to sd card.
Another way, get the oficial rom for your tablet copy the file to ext-sdcard and follow the install instrutions of the rom, you must create the dload directory in ext-sdcard.
it look like you lost the system files and the kernel of the device, so it boot in to fastboot, fastboot does not acept adb, but fastboot has some commands to copy kernel and system file to the device, it cant copy a zip file, must be a img file.
Version 6.0.1 of cwm reads update files from ext-sdcard so you can also try to install that recovery version with fastboot.
Remember: it always a good idea to have a backup before doing anything.
Hope that helps.

Try using TWRP, and use ADB to push your flashable ROM zip into your /sdcard directory. You can then use the recovery to flash it onto your phone.
The command to push files from your local desktop to your Nexus 4's internal memory is:
Code:
$ adb push flashable-rom-zip.zip /sdcard
You can try doing the same thing with CWM, but in my experience it doesn't work that well. With TWRP, on the other hand, ADB push commands work flawlessly.
So there is no other way to mount my Nexus to the computer?

You cannot mount an MTP device as USB in recovery. Some devices have an app but they also have removable storages.

If I had that problem, I would probably flash back to stock Android. Google (finally) put the Nexus 4 factory images back online. I can't post links here just yet, but a quick Google search for "nexus factory images" should get you there.
Just run:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
And then run flash-all for your OS.
It's easier if all those files are in the folder with fastboot and adb from the Android SDK. I'm trying to clear up confusion between the codenamed "mako" and "occam", both linked with the Nexus 4. I think "mako" is the hardware and "occam" is the software, but if they are actually two slightly different phones, and you make your problem worse, I can't take responsibility.
I am trying to get the F2FS file structure and I can't find the SlimKat Rom or GAPPS files on my tablet. All I have is a laptop with Win8, which has copies of the needed files on there. Is there a way that I can get the .ZIP files onto my tablet, or make my laptop work like an OTG-USB? I'm not in the US and I don't know if I can get an OTG cable any time soon.
Thanks.

So is your situation:
Tablet is wiped
Partitions are formatted to f2fs
Recovery still functioning
If that is the case, then just use the sideload function. For TWRP, its under the advanced menu. Start sideload mode in TWRP, then on the PC open a command window in the directory where the files are (google to see how to add that function to the windows right click menu...really handy). Then:
adb sideload yourfilenamehere
Do it for both files.
Done.
