Hello! I have an unrooted N7 that is stuck with 4.1.1. I regularly get a notification advising me of an update & I run it through the process only to be discouraged to find I'm still stuck with 4.1.1.
Can anyone help? I don't want to root & do a bunch of crazy stuff to get the update. Is there a good fix without rooting?
FYI, I found a "fix" that required turning off WiFi, clearing the some of the systems cache, turning the WiFi back on & searching for an update. No dice...

If you have nothing to lose your best and easiest fix would most likely be to perform a factory reset.

Try applying the update. When your tablet reboots and you see the Android on your screen, hold down the power button then, while holding it down, press volume up. That'll put the stock recovery in verbose mode. When it errors out, post what the text says here.
Similar thing here.

Tried half a dozen times then did a manual forced update using this guide, easy to follow and worked first time.

Yes, I wanted to say this. stay on 4.1.1 or 4.1.2,.... 4.2.x is a piece of crap. Much slower, not the same device at all.
Thanks for advice, then I tried not to update to 4.2 and be happy at stucked 4.1.2
finger crossed and wait for next stable version instead.

4.2.1 is pretty stable, stability is not the problem, but initially it broke a lot of apps compatibility (ok, this will be solved in time), but no matter what I do I have feeling it is slower, and it stutters. I never had this with 4.1.1 or 4.1.2. And I was so happy with my Nexus until 4.2 Anyways, I had 4.2 on my original Nexus, then it died and I sent for repairs, now I have new motherboard (so it counts as different device) and factory-installed 4.2 and it is the same. Even sometimes when playing a game it just stops for a split second... Trust me, new notifications and multi user (if you're not using it) is not worth the smoothness of 4.1.1
Cheers,

Thanks for reply, I'm curious to know as why my N7 stuck at 4.1.2, there may be reason as I tried several times update (reboot and installed, stuck at 4.1.2) no matter how I tried) but I'm peace in mind as 4.1.2 stability.
Hello TPT community,
I Just got this tablet mainly because of the included digitizer and was wondering if anyone could give me a guideline on how to speed things up for this tablet. The tablet came with honeycomb 3.1 included and I am finding it pretty sluggish and unresponsive in general tasks. I went into settings to do a software update but it seems there is no 4.0 update available. There doesn't seem to be a toggle for pen only input in the settings either. Is the normal process for flashing a new Rom to root, then install CWM, and flash Roms?
I'm kind of a n00b here, but that is the right process in general.
For you, there should be a 4.0 update, but you might have to try a few times. After you are running ICS (4.0) you can root and load Koshu's JB rom.
Aren't there problems with rooting ICS?

Okay well I went into settings, about tablet, system updates, check for updates. It always says "your system is up to date" even though I know I'm on 3.1

Lets see if we can figure out why it won't update. In settings -> about tablet, what is listed for model number, android version, and kernel version?
Edit:
Found this - http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPa...ystem-updates-OTAs-not-installing/ta-p/713571
It might help... I'm also searching for a manual download for ota3 or ota 3.5 from lenovo that you can load in recovery.
Edit 2:
Sorry, I need more coffee...
Is this a wifi only tablet or a 3g tablet? What region is it?
I attached the info in a picture. I dont know how to find out what region or wifi/3g it is though. I don't have a sim to test it. I got it from here: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7473177&CatId=6845
It is wifi only, also found this interesting thread - http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/thinkpad-1839-update/td-p/975085
Apparently the Tiger Direct refurb is a custom SKU and is SUPPOSEDLY not upgradeable... tho I would think there are ways around that. At least now I know what we are working with here.

So any ideas on how to update to ICS? The ROM in android development section says it requires me to have ICS first.
Unfortunately no... sorry. I'm still a n00b with android devices. Maybe someone with a little more knowledge will chime in now that we know what we are dealing with.
You can root your tablet and go straight to Jelly Bean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2. It's fast and cool! The only little bug is with wifi!

The wifi bug actually isn't that big, just set wifi to always on like suggested. As far as the tampered drivers error, you will probably have to : a) search for a way to install unsigned drivers on win8
or b) use a winxp/win7 pc.
Be careful tho... flashing after having stock ICS is needed for a reason.

I was worried you were gonna try to just jump straight to JB.
Hey there,
well one way is to try flashing the upgrade directly but like da_reeseboy already mentioned, there is a high possibility that it will fail. Only other way would be to flash the bootloader directly (that most likely the part, that keeps the JB kernel from booting on non ICS kernels) but there is a high bricking chance and eventually the firmware for some of the hardware needs to be updated, too, to work properly.
It looks like there's hope - this guy has the same weird software version as you - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37487649&postcount=6. He used the directions in that thread to upgrade to ICS.

Just trying to think outside the box (noob style), what if he:
1. Installed CWM
2. Restored a clean 0075 nandroid from someone here on xda
3. Restored stock recovery
4. Checked for OTA to ICS
In my mind the software version is what is holding him back from updates, so I'm thinking that restoring an 0075 nandroid will put him in a position to get the update correctly... but I am still new to this so I could be WAY off.

hi people ...
This morning during my usual research, I came across a site that I upgraded incredibly over whether it is possible to update my Note 8 (wi-fi version) to the latest version of Android available today, namely Jelly Bean 4.2.2
The file to flash is entirely official and comes from the server SamMobile so who gets in and try it ...
Apparently there is a greater fluidity of the whole system as well as better battery management - which to me does not last at all, on the detail and just wanting to talk about it ...
The uploaded firmware via Odin (included in the package that'll download in v3.07) must be performed after a backup of all Our data since it will be permanently deleted, so be careful what you do - neither I nor others we take the responsibility for what you are to do
Launched the tablet in download mode (power button + power + volume down), connect the device to the PC until you get the blue signal in Odin, after which add the file CODE_N5110XXCMG2_1031850_REV01_user_low_ship.tar in CODE section and the file CSC_OXA_N5110OXACMG2_1031850_REV01_user_mid_noship.tar in CSC section as well as the kona_wifi.pit file in PIT.
Start the firmware flash just entered and wait ...
...so, we should also have Android 4.2.2 on Our Note 8
Let me know how it goes the operation, thanks ...
Were you able to re-root

the process will void your warranty because it is a beta rom (unofficial) but should not serve root permissions to do this ...
... remarked that this custom rom / firmware is only for the GT-N5110 !!!
nb. Obviously those were brought innovations introduced by Google with Android 4.2.2 as the lock screen widget, the quick setting and other software implementations.
will be curious to have some users talk about how this works for them...obviously flashing leaked software voids your warranty, but, everyone here already understands that...
i have the LTE version .... but not a single ROM is made for it :crying:
Has anyone tried this yet? I'm downloading now, and will probably go for it (though maybe not till later tonight/tomorrow. I'll update this post with a few comments once I've had a look at it.
UPDATES:
CF Auto Root works fine to root this version.
ALL data (including internal SD) is wiped using the above method.
Internal SD card data is all in /DATA/MEDIA/0 after this update, so even if you manage to update without a full SD wipe, nothing is going to be where you expect it to be. Unfortunately no multi-user though Beware when restoring a nandroid that the new location of SDCARD may cause problems.
Everything important (to me) seems to be working fine. Despite the SD card wipe, all my S-notes reappeared by samsung sync, so I'll just have afew pictures, pdfs and documents to copy back. Definitely feels faster, the Note 8 always felt really sluggish compared to my HTC One, but now there is not much between them. It even feels more responsive now than the GS4 I tried out when I was comparing it to the HTC.

Downloading now...was over an hour. 15 min left
My main concern about flashing this is requirement to flash the new partition table. None of the 4.1.2 firmwares I have looked at seem to have a .PIT file, so I'm a bit concerned I won't be able to go back to 4.1.2 if this turns out to be a bit buggy.
I've gone ahead and done it. Bugs so far:
I've only once been able to edit the extended toggles, subsequent attempts force-close the Settings app (In fact going to settings -> notification panel force-closes settigns too). Wifi seems a bit flaky but that could be my workplace, will try at home tonight.
But...
Apps can be moved to SD card now, a lot of them, but their icon is replaced with a SD card one [edit: Only on the homescreen, you can remove it and re-add it and it's fine].
More as I find it...

Yes, it's normal that there are bugs ... however, we are talking about a beta and not a final draft, though coming.
Let's say that affect the transparencies that were not there before, the ability to have all the widgets available and how to claim the boys SamMobile greater responsiveness attached to a battery power more gradually - the only thing that interests me honestly: P
I'm very happy with the update so far. Definitely much more responsive than 4.1.2. No serious bugs so far.
Time to start messing about with it, I never bothered on 4.1.2 because I knew there would be a 4.2.2 coming soon enough....

Hopefully 4.2.2 will encourage a few more users to try their hand at making custom roms. There are so few roms at the moment that I'm even tempted to share the few tweaks I make to the stock rom (basically just rooting, deleting some of the stuff I don't use and installing Xposed)
Civato and soloilmeglio are doing great stuff, and perhaps now we are the first in the Note family to get 4.2.2 we might get some attention from other experienced devs.
@gshaw1967: just use CF Autoroot, I think it's just downloaded apps you can move to the SD card.
General Update
My Gtab was feeling old and sluggish and hadn't seen an update for a while and I had stopped using it. Also I have just received a Nexus 4 running android 4.3 which is a fantastic device.
I have applied a nightly release of CyanogenMod 10.1 (4.2.2). The process had some issues for me as the Google Apps package didn't seem to apply correctly however I was able update Play and then all of the google applications after the reboot and everything is there. The tablet now has a new lease on life.
It has only been 24 hours so if there are any issues I will post back.
I agree, it makes my P7510 seem like a new tablet.

Go to the development section and you will see an official thread there for Pershoot's CM 10.1 JB 4.2.2 moderated by Nakedninja. You will need a different gapps as the ones for 4.0.4 are not compatible with 4.2.2. However, the required gapps are also available on the same thread, as well as the CWM recovery that you will need for the installation. All the instructions for flashing correctly are also there, just ensure you read before the actual flashing.

Take a look here and download the gapps you need to your tab...
I assume you have either CWM or TWRP installed as your custom recovery, since you will need a custom recovery to install the zip-file. If not, take a look here.
- Boot into your custom recovery
- Install ZIP (choose the gapps zip-file you just downloaded)
- reboot system
Hi guys, first of all let me share al my specs in order to place my question properly:
PHONE MODEL: Galaxy S4 SGH-I337M (the original stock kernel was: Build Date: 30.05.2013 -> Region: TCE (Mexico) PDA: I337MUMUAMDL Changelist: 518267 Android: 4.2.2)
Actual Rom: CyanogenMod -version: 10.2 10.2-20130923-nightly -jftlecan
Compilation number: cm_jfltecan-userdebug 4.3 JLS36G eng.jenkins.20130923.022829 test-keys
Recovery Mode: CWM via Rom Manager Pro app
So saying that I will say this: I came from stock to CM wiping Factory Reset and data/cache only and I used Odin for rootint the device....no problems at all, runs like a charm...
MY ISSUE #1: A couple of auto-updates ago (via Rom Manager), I start to notice that the radio bars (telephony signal, mobile internet signal bars) were from 1 to 2 bars in places I always get full bars (I live on a 7th floor with excelent signal at Mexico City). I searched on the forums (XDA developers and here) and it seems that ROOTED DEVICES SHOW THE REAL SIGNAL PROVIDED BY THE CAREER---->can someone confirm this? Is my phone showing the real signal strenght?, eventhough, keep reading to see that low signal bars are only the beginning...
So as i said, I didnt worry pretty much, because if the bars are little low, but i have a good quality service, who cares? but the REAL PROBLEM appears when another update came and when Im trying to use my mobile internet (4g or 3G, doesnt matter) the signal cuts exactly at the moment of loading a page or any info....it as happened with almost all apps (specially Facebook, Waze and Google Maps)
It happens as follows:
1.- Open any app, like Dolphin browser or Firefox
2.- Page starts to load info (LTE showing download and upload state)
3.- LTE-3G or whatever, shuts down (I see only the telephony signal bars and there is no internet signal)
4.- Wait few seconds, LTE-3G whatever is back...have to try again and agin until LTE remains steady (sometimes it wont until I reboot)
ISUE #2- DURING CALLS:
- Sometimes people cant hear me, but I can hear them...restart the phone and the issue fixes it self...buts is very annoying to restart my phone every single time somebody calls me and they cant hear me
I dont know what to do guys? Shall I wait until final CM10.2 comes to light? Somebody has this bug also? Is this bug part of CM? or there is another app making this rare behaivour...(do you recommend me another ROM for this model of GS4??)
EDIT: I tried to flash the original modem.bin (via ODIN) which is used by my carreer (TELCEL, son of Slim AKA "The richest man on Babylon :silly: is the company´s name). So until now, I can tell that in my first attempts of opening pages or facebook, the randomly LTE turning off-on continues...I will keep testing with this "orginal" flashed modem....

It's defiinitely a modem issue. You can flash new modems and try. (backup efs before doing so, actually if you dont already have one - do it before now and save yourself some grief)
If that's not fixing the issues...
I'd backup what you need and start fresh. It would be the easiest way to resolve all your issues. Maybe even try a different kernel set for your region and phone.
Kies has a useful firmware recovery option that sets you back to stock.
The Kies will use your model number and serial to get you your stock firmware and reset you back. Id wipe all data under settings then do it. After its done, do another factory reset in recovery.

Thanks for that advice, i guess Im going to do all that if a new kernel doesnt fix the issue (I havent found any kernel for my region which supports Android 4.3, only 4.2.2, and someone told me is not correct to install such a kernel). Good day to you!

So after done all the "back to stock" steps, I still get this questions:
1.- Would I still be ROOT but with stock firmware (Touchwiz) and cool features originally made for Samsung GS4? (such as air gestures, etc etc)
2.- If im "unrooted" by the steps described in your link, can I upgrade to 4.3???
Thanks you are so kind!
Check out GoldenEye ROM or MDOB ROM in the development forum. They are extremely stable, super fast, tw and excellent battery life. CM is awesome, but is seriously way to flawed for our S4's right now to use for day to day life.

Thanks. I successfully installed stock Rom (Touch Wiz) and the signal has been impecable (full vars and excellent internet speed). I have to say that stock Rom is faster than CM in its current state I'm having a better experience right now ( and didn't had the time to explore all the Samsung apps in their depth) thanks again for your kind help!!!

You're having that issue on either GoldenEye or MDOB or factory?
Man, I decided to return to full stock rom...LTE in perfect shape now...dont know what happened...i flashed with odin the exact version indicated in forums for making only the root without the custom rom or recovery...even that soft rooting is making my modem going crazy...i prefer stay this way until someone releases a decent full version for a GS4 SGH-I337m thanks guys
Did you try one of iB4STiD's ROMs? They work perfectly. CM is just way to full of bugs.

How did you go mine still up the creek I have tried everything possible that I have been advised thanks to a kind senior member I am writing down all the evil things I did to my device to hopefully be able to fix whatever I did because no amount of flashing using ODIN or KIES reset works there seems to be something missing from my fone I just wish I knew I started disliking it

Well I just went back to original stock firm ware via Kies, and now the radio signal issues are gone!! CM 10.2 didn't work well for me as the stock rom is now working in my phone. Something tells me that some times it's better to just rooting (for enjoying cool apps as Greenify) and not installing custom Roms (because all this kernel carnival is just to much, and appart of all we have to install radio firmware? Just no!)
