Ok, this may seem VERY obvious for many, but thought it was worth a mention.
On the N7105, under Settings > Wireless & Network > More Settings > Mobile Networks,
the "Network Mode" option has LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Auto/4G), GSM only(Edge/2G), WCDMA only (3G/HSPA+) .
When using data in passive mode, like letting emails, notifications, contacts, s/media etc sync in the background, if you leave it on GSM only, I'm guessing it'll take up a lot less battery.
And every now and then when you need to browse or stream etc, you can temporarily set it to LTE/Auto or WCDMA depending on the data load (like WCDMA for audio streaming; LTE/Auto for video streaming).
I'm sure there's widgets that do it from the homescreen too.
And I guess the same applies for the N7100, except for the LTE part.
For anyone on 3 in the UK wanting to try this, 3 doesn't have a 2g/GSM only network.
Thanx for the tip
While this is true, I can't stand it. This is coming from me! I used to keep my Blackberries always on 2G. But the problem is if you do anything OTHER than receive emails or send messages, then it's too slow.
Not to mention anything over data via 2G or 2.5G (Edge) cuts off your phone line as it's using the data connection and you can't handle voice and data over over 2 or 2.5G. Be warned! You're going to miss a lot of phone calls!
If you receive a call it will cut out the data connection. Not the other way round
You won't miss any calls...
By the way everyone, check out opera mini! Set image quality to low and pages load pretty quickly over 2.5g and decently over 2g.

Cmon guys. . This phone is the mother of all smart phones in regards of battery. ..you need these tricks only if you are stuck on a desolated Island. ..
handwritten from my note 2 (N7100)
I will also have to agree with the previous post. I get almost 2 solid days if not a little more of battery life on this thing. Changing the 4G setting only takes away the full ability of what my "little monster" has to offer.

Actually, yeah!
It happens to my mom and me all the time. At my moms house she doesn't use wifi, and she leaves it on GPRS. if she's chatting on whatsapp, the phone call goes to the answering machine because it's being transmitted over the same radio! So her being online holds up the line. I'd suggest you try it Turn on GPRS and browse the web and while loading a site give yourself a call.
Never ceases 2 amaze me how people use all kind of tricks, from Uv, Uc, to what the op does...etc etc...ending up with nothing more than a dumb phone with a big screen!
I paid the full price n I want to use the full potentiel, n how big of a deal is it to plug to a power outlet? unless ur in the middle of nowhere, in which case u'll have no use 4 the phone anyways!
Peace 2 all.
Well, people only end up "using" the phone for a few hours (in terms of screen time), and for the majority of the day, it's just passively doing it's thing. So if you had some widget set up for a quick 2/3/4G swap, for the great majority of the day, it wouldn't really make a difference in your experience with the phone. It'd just mean you wouldn't have to worry about running low on juice when you actually ARE using it for content/media/social media etc.
But that is, if you can be bothered The battery's great eitherway!
Re: missing calls on 2G when data is on, I guess it might be carrier specific (as to whether they prioritize pushing through phone calls over data); wouldn't really know. But in my case, the phone calls seem to tend to come through...
Anyway, as I do tend to use the phone quite a lot (multi tasking, a/v streaming, photography/editing, media uploading and more, all at a 'decent' brightness) and am out and about till late regularly, I've realized, putting in that little bit of effort when I'm not doing all that makes a noticeable difference by night time.
But if/when all else fails...spare battery

This is exactly what I do when I'm not really using the phone too much and its mostly in my pocket. Taking it out for a few minutes every now and then I use Opera Mini and the speed over 2.5g is acceptable enough. This is a huge battery saver if you need the phone to last as long as possible when you know you'll be away from a charging point for a few days.

if anyone knows of a widget that can directly toggle between 2G and 3G or 4G, i'd love to know about it because samsung implemented network switching differently from AOSP so apps that work on AOSP doesn't work on samsung, at least as far as I can tell. Even having root is useless, I still can't find a widget capable of directly toggling the networks...

For the time being, I've to a shortcut widget to "Mobile Networks" (Power Toggles -> 2G/3G) on my homescreen, and I switch it from there. It's one extra click, but I guess I can live with it!

I've got a widget for the shortcut too, but it's more than 1 extra click right? You have to click the widget, then Network mode, click the mode you want, then click OK, then it will swap modes. That's 4 clicks. On AOSP based roms, it's just 1 click. Guess it's probably a limitation of samsung roms.
So when I posted about switching the original note 1 to edge or gsm only to save battery everyone told me I was crazy and it didn't save any battery but now this is a tip?

I tried it on my previous S3 before and Tasker couldn't toggle it either.
Related to the missed calls when on 2G.
That depends of wich model you're using.
CDMA (example: Sprint) will allow you to use data, but data connection will not be available if you place a call. And if you're browsing the web, or downloading something, calls go directly to voicemail
GSM (example: AT&T) will allows you to browse data when you're on 2G, BUT, you can be able to receive calls even if you're downloading something, but the data connection will me cut off until you finish the call.
That's the main difference about how the modems and radio works between each technology.

Why would you want to do that? You should have 3G all the damn time, Ive yet to drop 3G within the 20 square miles i drove today.
Battery Life? Compared to my Nexus (so far) the incredible is better because its not trying to force back and forth from 3G and Edge 99% of the day....Savor It!
thats all well and good, but some of us would like to disable 3g on occasion to ensure we get longer life, i've yet to find the option in the system settings, anyone know where it might be hidden.

Yeah I figured out how to disable all data connections in Settings, but in my experience, whenever I turn off 3g I've had waaaayyyy better battery life. Has anyone proved that Using 3G wastes more power, I would think that the slower transfer speeds require more info transfered from your phone to download the information requested, and longer uptime waiting to view a webpage.
Why spend money on such a nice phone to browse with slow speeds.

hey i'm not saying i'm planning to use it myself, with the exception of when i go to gamble at the casino cause they have awful data interference
if your streaming videos or large file transfers the cell radio would actively broadcast for much longer time and would use more power going to youtube on it all day, but sometimes you know your gonna be away from a charger or just have to be on the run for while and while the phone has great data features sometimes you need the phone to be a phone and know that its reliable and their when you need it
of course it will have breakpoint where smaller data transfers will be more efficient, the largest benefit will be noticed when the phone is in your pocket maintaining its connection with cell towers
this will allow you to still receive emails in real time but give your phone radio less work to do

What does all this even mean?
Friend of mine just got the Vibrant from Bell,
Has anyone had luck using the front camera with Fring? I read in an update that Fring supports the FFC on the Galaxy S (presuming its the UK one they're talking about, dont know if that would matter though). Hes trying to use Fring on the Vibrant and cant seem to find an option to switch the camera to the front one.
Also, is there a way to turn off data completely? Dont have a data plan but would still like to use Wifi. I cant seem to find it in settings. Help please!
Friends phone doesnt seem to have any GPS problems that have been mentioned!
I'm not sure about the front camera, haven't tested it but the way I turn off data is by using the 'Extended controls' widget from the market. Either that or mess around with the APN settings.
Will try that. Thanks!

+1 for APNdroid.
Just simply add the widget and you can turn on/off 3G data with one click.
What I miss from the stock Bell firmware is the ability to toggle GSM/WCDMA mode manually.
GSM won't work at all on Bell's network, but I spend a fair amount of time in the US, and a fair amount of that time out in the boonies where there is no 3G US coverage. Leaving it on just burns battery like crazy when it's looking for a signal, when it could just drop down to GSM/EDGE and sip juice.
Int'l firmware solves that problem, but IMHO the JG9 firmware on the Bell Vibrant is pretty damned solid. GPS locks faster on it than it did when I was running JM2 or JP3, and no little odd bugs like dropped WiFi, etc.
Tough call for me, but after weeks of experimenting with my Captivate and now my Vibrant, I'm pretty much ready to stay stock and wait for official Froyo.
Personally, i use a widhet call "Toggle Data" and it works like a charm. I'm with bell also.

Ok so I found this old thread. Just got my Bell Vibrant and got it unlocked to use with Rogers. Are there any new apps or method to switch from 3G to 2G or just allow me to view and change which mode I'm currently at? This will save battery.
Does the phone auto adjust to whichever mode (2G or 3G) it detects?
Both before and after the ota update, my internet icon will disappear, making my phone unable too use the internet (obviously), send texts, and sometimes even not let me make our receive phone calls. Why I do not know. I am sending this message on wifi right now, because my phone has both no internet and also no radio signal. I'm at my house and my house always has full reception and I get H for the internet. If anyone can help or direct me too something I can do that would be great.
I did call tmous and they said I had the my touch internet package and switched me to general android, but this did not help my problem. Thanks

It can take up to 4 hours for any web changes to take effect. Maybe give it more time.
Also try *#*#4636#*#* - Phone information - and WCDMA preferred. Make sure wifi and wifi calling disabled because it will keep it at GSM only.
Hope this helps.
I called and did the internet switch yesterday morning. As for that stat number thing, after I pressed it everything came back on. Don't know if it was coincidence or not.
Will have to check again when out happens. What early am I looking for?

I'm having the exact same problem. In my house I can get fair hspa+ 2-4 bars, 3G who nows as we don't have a 3G notification icon. Edge when it works is 4-5 bars. My wife has the Blackberry Bold also from T-Mobile and she has a solid 3G all the time.
I already changed my device once and the new one now 2 days old has the same issues. It is really starting to annoy me as many times I get ready to use the internet and I just have a signal bars with nothing to the left and internet and email are not working. This also means my email does not sync up properly when the connection is lost.
I'm going to try and spend some time in another area and see if the problem is the same. If so I might have to give up on this device, I hate to as I really like it.
Unfortunately being in different areas does not make a difference. I love this phone as well but this is very aggravating. What causes this to happen? No other htc phone I have used or friends have used have this problem.

Sorry I am having a hard time understanding what you are asking.
You go to the the dialpad on your phone. Enter *#*#4636#*#*
As soon as you do this it will bring up a menu. Tap on "Phone Information"
Then at the bottom you will see a dropdown box under "Set preferred network type:"
Set this to WCDMA preferred. Then hit the back button (the back arrow).
You will see that your signal has been disabled for a second, then will turn back on. Also if you can note down what it was set to before you changed it to WCDMA preferred and post that here.
Like I said this can only be done when wifi and wifi calling are disabled.
Hope I was a little more clear this time.
Well I may have to eat my words. It might be my location or just crappy T-Mobile service that is varying. I put my wifes phone in the same part of the house side by side of mine and trying to surf the web it dropped out too. Lost the 3G and got a SOS for signal bars. Unlike my G2 it recovered fairly quickly as the reception came back. My G2 has been at a loss for internet for over a hour before.
I'm still going to try some comparisons in some different ares and I hope it is just my area.

Is there a way to force CyanogenMod (or even the stock rom) to stay at HSPA? My phone has issues going from 3G to HSPA and staying there (happens regardless of rom). Is there a way to make it stick on HSPA? I'm not too worried about the battery life, it's already pretty abysmal.
Thanks!
I don't know if there is. The reason it does that is to keep unnecessary bandwidth from being used by the phone. It's a quick switch.
Edit: there is the old method of dialing *#*#4636#*#* and selecting wcdma only, but I think it still switches between 3G/4G
There is no way, it's dependent on cellular carrier and not on the phone AFAIK.
The question is - why would you want to? What are the "issues" you're seeing?

my phone is refusing to go up to 4g (HSPA) in a reasonable amount of time. It takes on average 45-60 seconds for it to move up. It's done that no matter which rom I use and it's annoying as pages won't load until it goes to HSPA
Bad. OK, as a very harsh and bad semi-solution you could run a ping once in 5 sec, that would keep your phone's data connection constantly active. But it's no good solution.

I'm guessing a lot of people on here know this already but I recently discovered how to massively increase my Moto X's battery duration. Makes me wonder why having mobile data switched on is expending so much battery power?

It is not shocking but somehow people tend to forget the basics. And it is also unnecessary while on wifi, which is the case and the advice he spoke of.
And I'd go even further and set 3G only with wifi, lollipop tends to switch from wifi to LTE by itself very often.
I've heard of people suggesting switching off wifi when your not using it, but never mobile data. So i just thought it might be a suggestion some people might appreciate. Take it or leave it.
Plus wifi is doing the exact same funtion as mobile data when your connected to it, so your not losing any functionality.
If your rooted you can even get Tasker to do the switch automatically.
This actually doesn't work. The data radio goes I to sleep mode when WiFi is on. Its not just doing its own thing while wood is on.
Definitely working on WiFi enhances battery life enormously but didn't try switching off mobile data

How is this possible? When your wifi radio is connected, the data side is completely disconnected. This is even reported in your 'status'.
I see your point, but all I know is that it definitely is making a large difference for me.
One theory I attributed it with was that with Wifi and Mobile Data switched on the phone is getting a lot more Wake Locks (perhaps doubling up), which in turn could also possibly be preventing the phone going into a Deep Sleep. But as the Wakelock detector app doesn't work any more (unless your rooted), I can't verify this.
Gonna test this out!
The issue with turning off mobile data is that it will cause problems with sending and receiving MMS, you may also have problems with SMS as well.
My HTC Sensation was really good at basically putting the radio to sleep when on Wifi and only waking when needing to send or receive data that will only work over the cell network.

I don't disable mobile data, but I do use tasker to switch to 3G when I'm connected to wifi. The LTE radio uses a lot more battery in poor signal areas (like my apartment) and I have noticed it helps me go from about 3 hours of screen time to 4.5. I think the MMS issues are a good point and I feel like this solution is slightly more elegant because even with mobile data disabled, the phone is still holding an LTE signal. Ymmv, obviously

First you'll need root and this plugin (make sure to enable external access in the plugin app)
Basically, create a profile that runs whenever you connect to a network (you can leave it blank for all networks or press the search button to choose just your home network).
The entry task would basically wait 10 seconds and then run the plugin choosing wcdma/gsm (auto) as the network mode. Choose then to add an exit task which simply recalls the plugin and chooses the network mode as LTE, wcdma, gsm. You can even add an extra step to each task at the end which has tasker display a toast that you can have say LTE enabled or 3g mode only

I double checked and tested this on my Pure Edition on T-Mobile.

Sent a standard text message, it was received by the other party. Attempted to send a photo message, it was not able to send from my phone as well as the other party did not receive it. Though it did resend when data was enabled.
Tasker can't turn off mobile data since Lollipop update....
