[Q] Quitting the HD2 game - what next? - HD2 General

Hi guys!
I know there are quite a few posts like this but haven't found one yet reguarding the phones I am looking at so...
My HD2 is starting to get a little boring (working fine thou) so thinking of changing it! My requirements for a replacement are: Windows Phone native device (no Android device running a ported WP ROM or anything) and a full hardware QWERTY keyboard! Aparently that is quite hard to come by... The two devices that look best to me are: Dell Venue Pro and HTC 7 Pro
Thoughts?
/Anders

There's a device suggestion thread in the General forum where you'll get far more replies. You're going to struggle if you need a physical keyboard, no high-end WP8 phone will have one AFAIK.

Oh thanks I didn't see that one before! Yeah I am starting to see that physical keyboards are a hard thing to come by today Even on Android the line-up is limited...

In the unlikely case that RIM succeed with bb10, you might still have some luck. However I think there's not much of a future in hardware keyboards.

A bluetooth keyboard may be your answer, you can get ones attached to a phone case which slides out.

Do they work on Windows Phone? They don't on 7.8 I can verify but don't know about 8?

Why Should I buy HD2?

Guys,
I appreciate, "you are doing wonderful job here".
I am planning to buy HTC HD2. But I am confused why i should buy it rather than an iphone. What are the benefits? As even we are not sure whether HTC would provide upgrade to Windows mobile 7 for this device.
I have been using HTC tytnII for last 2 years so I am familiar with windows OS. only issue is these OS are not upgradable. Like apple keep on issue OS upgrade for iphone users.
Isn't it bit problematic to have such a big screen without stylus?
From where can i get cheapest HD2 in UK?
Please guide me in right direction.
Thanks,
If there is nothing you would miss on iPhone, then I would not hesitate.
I would miss many things though.
Get the HD2 & have the support of XDA at the same time! If you read the threads in this Leo section, then it's a no brainer! Good luck.

It's less problematic than a smaller screen without a stylus (such as the iPhone).
Replacing HD with HD2?
I would like to hear from the experience of Previous HD(1) owners who had migrated to HD2. Is it really worth it? is it a major or a minor step ahead?
I'm asking that because currently I have no issue with my HD (WM 6.1), it is a very responsive PDA which serves most of my needs (phone, mail, messaging, web, video, slingplayer, fring, etc.)
Thanks

I have both and have been trying to decide the same thing for the last few days. My test was to use the HD2 for 24h, and then go back to the HD1.
I listed my HD1 on eBay this morning... #1 deciding factor? Capacitive. Closely followed by speed.

I totally agree. The screen itself is worth upgrading from the HD to the HD2! The speed is a welcome improvement, and the whole UI just seems a lot more rounded than previous versions.
I know a fair few people moan about HTC, and a lot of those moans are valid, but in my opinion they've really improved on the HD, as if that was almost a test for the HD2 which is the real thing.
Not knocking the HD - don't get me wrong. I loved that phone, but it's going in the post today, after selling it on eBay the other day.
I can't see myself wanting to upgrade this phone for a looooooooooooong time!

Reports vary from Q1 2010 to Q4 2010. The only consistency so far is 2010, so I wouldn't hold your breath for it.
Hehe, we are in the same shoes Next Monday I'm going to get a HD2, distributed in Vietnam. Although there are some problems being complained everywhere, but it's no doubt one of the hottest device this quarter. Let try and experience!
i've got a hd1, and thinking of upgrading to hd2
but my hd1 on uk orange is rubbish, and is a total pain.
i've discovered that orange has tweeked the rom so much it's not good.
so my question is, does UK Vodafone alter the rom, and is it supported by HTC unlike the orange hd?

I kind of have a similar question. I'm kind of on the brink of switching to the HD2 from my magic 32b. Basically the hardware specs make the HD2 a beast. I like android and have rooted my phone and am pretty much getting all I can out of it. I'm wondering if it's worth the switch to WinMo? I could really careless either way on the OS. I'm not really a fanboy of one or the other. If I do buy an HD2 I will load a custom ROM. What are the advantages of this? (I know there are many for Android Devices.) I just want to make an informed decision.
Thanks for all your help guys.

[Q] Worth buying as a purely Android phone?

Hi, apologies if this has been covered before, but in your opinion is it worth buying an HD2 intending to use it purely as an Android phone? You can buy it for about half the price of a similarly specced Android phone, but will you get the same sort of performance out of the HD2 as a similarly specced native Android phone like the Evo?
Are there any significant drawbacks to using Android on the HD2 compared to a native phone?
Thanks in advance

Hey dude.. I use my HD2 purely on Android and I love it.. Works great for me.. Just gotta do a little searching to find the Android build that you like best.. I use one of the Cyanogenmod ones and my wife used one of the Sense builds, but different strokes for different folks.
The beauty of it is that yoiu can change to a completely differnt version as many times as you like and never have to lose any other version you've tried.. Its great.

it has its quirks but for the cheaper price, i think it's worth it. and i'm sure a couple of months from now it'd be near 100% stable.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844914
I bought it purely for Android, because I could find it for a lot less, with better specifications. It's as good as finished, some quirks here and there but we'll get there eventually, and it sure is very useable. Mind that you'll have to spend some time in the beginning to figure out which combo of WinMo rom/radio/android build works best for you, but once you're set, it's a good experience. And if you feel like exploring the geek world, HD2 is probably thé best phone currently out there, but that's just something optional of course.
One thing that I'm just starting to realize as a problem is that the hard keys on the hd2 don't seem to very stable. Using android forces you to use those keys a lot more than you would need to on winmo... I assume that's why all the newer android phones are using capacitive buttons instead of hard buttons. My back and middle button are starting to get really screwy after a few months of using android. I barely used them with winmo. I'm definitely gonna keep that in mind when I get a new phone.

Thanks for the replies, I went ahead and bought one, they're ridiculously cheap on ebay compared to android phones and I like hacking and fiddling with gadgets so i'm hoping it will be great! Hope I don't have the same problem with the buttons...
I haven't got any trouble with the buttons don't know what the hell some guys do with there phones. but if you take much care of it, the HD2 is a great phone, speed in android is faster then the most common android devices. maybe not as fast as the desire HD but still an amazing device

I'm pretty sure that it's just a design reason, it's really not that hard or expensive to implement good physical buttons. My ol' HTC Magic for example had great ones, I'm sure they'll last way longer than anyone will ever use the phone.

[Q] Gingerbread on Focus?

I was just curious if anyone has any thoughts on Gingerbread on a Samsung Focus? I read that the Nexus S with the recent Gingerbread installed is the identical phone. I am very happy with Phone 7 and have no intentions of switching but the possibility could give us all much more value with the Focus. The thought of Gingerbread on this phone may also add to the longevity and a market value if someone wanted to sell it before their contract is up. I love phone 7 and hope they start some regular updates to make the phone even better.
Yep.. it's called the captivate LOL and probably not because it's a 3 button phone, kinda why HD2's and other window mobile phones are not upgradable

on a side note.... the HD2 is upgradable... they've successfully put windows 7 on it. The only catch so far is it doesn't have the correct licencing so it isn't able to have working live tiles or the marketplace. But none the less.... its on there working.
I dont think anyones been working on Android on our phones yet. First thing's first is to get WP7 cracked open totally then they can do their magic. That's still a ways off though.
If you want android on a phone, how about you buy an android phone and not clutter wp7 areas.

well work in progress...considering they said WM7 wouldn't be able to run at all on any other devices Id say its a pretty huge step. Probably the only WM phone that can do it and do it well. Android still doesn't work fully on my touch pro 2 but I kept that phone just for that reason that one day it WILL be able to run it.
the HD2 can run android (almost full), WM 6.1/6.5, WM7 and I think they were saying they're starting to work on getting webos on it too so, pretty stellar phone I would say!
Still, like I said, I think android running on our phones is still a long ways a way. They only just recently cracked one of the HTC WP7's to be able to run other roms. Big step for sure but still a far cry from running an entirely different OS

Yeah well considering I use the GPS, and camera a lot, and live tiles now that I have it. I wouldn't consider that close lol That 4.3 screen is just awesome for TomTom. I'd rather use my HD2 as an android device before a windows phone 7. Web OS might be interesting though... aah so little time some many possibilites. Another problem is the Focus is only a 3 button phone, I duno if you can rework Android to work on 3 instead of 4.

[Q] Thinking about buying a HD2

I’ve currently got a HTC Touch Pro and I’m thinking about maybe buying a HD2 which I can get on eBay for about £170 - £200 and that’s quite a lot of money so I want to be sure before I buy it. What has mainly gotten me interested in this phone is the fact it can run Windows Phone 7 which looks lovely. A few things I’m unsure about is the size and the fact this phone doesn’t have a hardware keyboard, I’ve used a friend’s HD2 before but only for a few minutes. Anybody here upgrade to the HD2 from a phone with a hardware QWERTY keyboard how did you find getting use to the onscreen one, was it better?
Thanks
It can run WP7, but it's a bit of a hack, you basically can't "activate" it to get apps from the marketplace or other xbox live services without calling Microsoft and getting a gullible representative on the line, which are hard to come by because by now they've mostly been briefed on this.
Also, who knows when nodo comes out in March if the old ROMs will still function indefinitely, nodo itself will have to be hacked in order for it to accept sideloading which Microsoft has stated they'd close. Also half the reason why the closed-source WP7 works so well on the HD2 is because it was prototyped on the HD2, the ROMs available now are based on those prototypes, after nodo, that also won't be the case, necessitating the making of drivers for a closed-source OS with no native SDK.
I don't want to sound negative, but my experience with WP7 is that it's not a "daily driver" on the HD2, and unlike Android on the HD2 is very much an unfinished work with an uncertain future due to Microsoft locking up the platform. It is fun to play with though, and I think you'd enjoy the HD2 in general, but if what you want is a WP7 phone, you probably should buy a WP7 phone.
I bought the HD2 for use as a student/scientist to be able to communicate with work effectively through email along with mobile office and all the great features it has. The lack of qwerty keyboard is made up for by the large screen. It gives a touch screen keyboard a lot of real estate to work with. But I just recently decided to install android on it instead of upgrading to WM7. That has made me love this phone. You can keep WM6.5 on the phone as well as install android for all the fun quirkiness you need. It has made this phone perfect for me. This phone is like a mullet: Business in the front (windows), party in the back (android, and by back I mean SD card).
I had a Desire and moved on to the HD2 about a month ago - the larger screen makes using the touch keyboard easier.
A side effect of booting Android off an SD card (as I do) is that a *full* backup of the installation can be made by simply copying the contents of the relevant directories on the SD card. Also, the data.img file (equivalent to the data partition on a phone where the O/S is installed in EEPROM) can be resized (with some care) to a larger size if needed.
Should you buy an HD2?
YES.
Firstly WP7 works properly and is EASY to activate via MS helpline.(1 phone call approx. 2 mins). There is a ton of support for you and any questions or problems you have, right here on this site.
A bit of a hack?... Yes, well this is XDA and I'm pretty sure you know that and are comfortable with it already.
WP7 on the HD2 works better (faster) than on the HD7!!!!
Secondly if you don't like WP7 as an everyday OS (are you ill?) then you can have WM6.5, Android, Ubuntu, Meego and even Win 95/98 or I think I read somewhere XP????
Why would you even ask if you should buy one?
£200 is cheap (£400+ rrp) compared to anything else on the market especially when you look at the specs and performance of those devices compared with the HD2.
I've had to upgrade my SD Card for £30, but I didn't have to fork out £300 for HD7, and I was going to upgrade anyway to fit more music on.
As for the soft keyboard...what can I say? It's bigger than the hard keys you've got at the minute and the Touch Screen works great.
The only question you should be asking is;
Why hasn't everyone got an HD2?
No matter what you prefer as an OS, the HD2 has got you covered thanks to the hard work of some great people on XDA, Cotulla and Bepe @ DFT and lots of others, too many to name here.
Essentially the HD2 will do what you want it to do when you want it to do it. And if what you want to do is sell it, for a new iPhone or HD7 (seriously, you may want to book some time with your GP), then plenty of people on here will want to buy it.
BUY... BUY... BUY....
Negativity

WP7 on HD2 is a hack, yes, but this is the XDA site, and if you're here, you're probably already comfortable with that fact.

HD2 was the test bed for WP7 on HTC devices, and HD7 is a slightly worse re-worked version of the HD2, so any future HD7 updates will be portable to HD2 which, if experience is an indicator, will run them better than HD7.
The Chevron7 unlock guys have been talking with MS about their sideload app, and although MS are going to close the loophole, Windows is Windows...infinitely hackable.
You may not be trying to sound negative, but you're not doing a very good job.
Definitely buy a HD2 and run Android (NAND) and you'll never look back.
Hi! I'd like to buy an hd2 too. My questions (in part you have already answered) are the following: i would buy an used hd2 to run above all android (and maybe occasionally i could try wp7 or the original wm6.5). But worth buying an hd2 for an unofficial rom? and android on hd2 is stable as the official one? has it problems (maybe it freezes...)? thank you very much!!!

Running WM6.5 I stuck with HTC ROMs, but WP7 means Custom is the new Standard. I don't know about Android, there is a seperate forum, I've never used it, too happy with WP7 (WM6.5 is also very good functionally), which works perfectly if you do it properly. See the posts on this forum about SD Cards.
In short, if you've thought about buying an HD2 you've made a mistake. JUST DO IT, you (probably) wont regret it.
I offer no guarantees on your experience when you decide to purchase. My experience has been awesome.
I am not paid by HTC to advertise their product, however if they offered to pay me, I would gladly advertise the HD2.
I have a Touch Pro & bought the HD2 about a month ago. It is a good device. In my opinion Android is not that special & WM7 is not worth the hassle.
I find Energy WM6.5.x build ROMs superb, rock solid with great GUI of sense & CHT.
The only thing better in Android is available games, Android platform itself is far from ground breaking & graphically dull as dull can get.
On screen keyboard options are good with WM although I still prefer a hard keyboard but the HD2 is good becuase of the huge screen & of course the SnapDragon.
Viewing websites is also far easier with the large screen & Opera 10 or 9.7.
You won't go far wrong with a HD2 if you are up to speed on modding WM, W7 & Android will leave you with problems (W7) or dull OS (Android).
Everyone is different but at least with the HD2 you can have many platforms in one device if you so wish.
ok. thanks a lot!! last question: i already tried to change bootloaders and roms in previuos winmo phones, luckily always all was ok. But in the hd2 is enough simple change bootloader/radio? i know that there are always risks but i've seen a lot of threads about "bricked" and "dead"/no more usable hd2. My question then is: if you follow carefully instructions of cookers is enough improbable that you brick your phone?? is this true? sorry for my bad english!
ps: can i trust buying used hd2 that already have android or however unofficial roms? This doesn't mean that these phones are "bricked", is this correct? even better then i may not have to change radio, correct? thank you very much!!
First Time
I only found out about Custom ROMs, flashing and Bootloaders 3 weeks ago, the first time I flashed everything worked. The HD2 is very stable, the ROMs on this site can be very stable.
Read the instructions carefully, make sure you have everything you need and a few hours spare to do the work. If you do this everything will be fine.
The Radio, MAGLDR and HSPL are as easy to install as a stock ROM, once you've read the instructions available.
NOW GO BUY YOUR HD2!!!!
NOW INSTALL WP7!!!
Thank you all for the replies and your be happy to know that I brought a HD2 yesterday on eBay for £177 I can't wait to get my hands on it =-D

I would prefer to buy a stock device rather than one that could of been subject to a lot of flashing ect.
Also try to buy the revision model identified by having yellow reset button rather than red.
These are reported to have better motherboards & screen assemblies (HTC revised model due to large amount of motherboard & screen fault warranty returns)
If buying used don't buy anything that sounds a bit iffy, HD2 is not a cheap or simple device to fix.

Yeah, I have an Android phone (actually 2), and I love it, but I've also been playing with WP7 and it's great too. I actually have a DVP on order.
The big thing for me though is the hardware.
The DVP is a BEAUTIFUL phone, and I love the form factor. There's nothing else like it.
I think the next closest phone would be the BB Torch (outdated crap and no AWS), the Pre series (crap that HP will kill, also no AWS), or the Moto Spice (POS Android 2.1 with locked Bootloader)
I know it's not possible right now and I'll fully enjoy my DVP when it arrives.
I'm hoping that someone will be able to crack the DVP (wasn't GeoHot supposed to do it at Pwn2Own?) and since the Android Venue is supposed to be more-or-less the same hardware (minus the sweet keyboard), hopefully it will be possible eventually.
I own a Galaxy Tab and would second this since someone brought it up. Before my Tab I was actually eagerly awaiting the DVP, mainly for its build quality and portrait slide-out QWERTY. Didn't get it in the end cos of the teething WP7 issues, and also because it wasn't even launched in my country till today; but I would have disregarded warranty issues and imported it if WP7 didn't have all those issues.
After using Android I realised it fit my usage pattern much better, but I'm still pining after the hardware of the DVP. Would be great to have the best of both worlds.
What is it with people getting defensive about the idea of having a Dell Venue Pro running Android? I had a Touch Pro 2 that ran Android, the HD2 runs Android and HD7, Sure I can always buy an Android device (which I do, I own a Droid Pro and a Nexus One) but the hardware on the Dell Venue Pro is probably some of the best I've had (Returned the phone after a few weeks due to it being WP7)
I've started a Bounty on Android on the DVP here:

Please, contribute if you can!
Yes, I also don't get why some people mind. I do own HTC Desire Z wich is great, but wow, the DVP is stunning! I love the way it looks and feels in the hand, and shockingly the keyboard is the best I've seen, even better than Desire Z's one. (shock)
There's nothing like it on the market, but WM7 is a deal breaker. That's why if someone ports Android on DVP, I sell my Desire Z in a heartbeat and go buy a Venue Pro!
So please, someone, do it!
Anyone try the rooting technique for the venue on a venue pro yet..? I may when my replacement for this one comes. I have been playing with some Droid ROMs, and funniest thing things is lots of these Droid ROMs remind me of the Energy ROM with HTC sense on WM6.5.. so if I can get Droid on my DVP, I may ditch WM7 until Mango update.

Why would a root exploit for android do anything to wp7? And how would you run it? All the root methods I'm familiar with are either all's (z4root, gingerbreak, etc) or require adb (superoneclick or manual methods), neither of which has anything to do with wp7

Not owning a Droid phone wasn't sure if you could get the DVP to "connect to pc" screen and then run some kind of technique to install android on top.. I stopped hacking and generally screwing with my phones when is went from WM to WP
