Too bright wife not amused. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all so I do a bit of reading laying on bed and lower the brightness levels to the lowest level but the nexus remains too bright. What app are you using to lower brightness further, am rooted running a stock 4.2.1rom please

Get a good reader app, like Moon Reader+.
It has a variety of night settings, like brown ink on a black background.

used to use screen filter until the 4.2 update totally broke it.

Simple: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.haxor&hl=en
Dimming plus lots more: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bartat.android.elixir

My wife used to complain about the brightness of my tablet while she was trying to sleep. I found a simple solution...I divorced her.
Nah, I'm kidding, we are still happily married. I use Aldiko Book Reader and set it to white text on a black background and that has pretty much resolved the issues.

Some kernels, like metallice's M-kernel and clemsyns battery saving kernel actually allow the brightness of the screen to go lower than on stock. Like, REALLY low

Is there a web browser that allows to set all pages that are normally black letters on white to the opposite (white text on black)?

I don't know of a browser, but I save articles from the browser to Pocket, which is set to white on black for late night reading

I think a screen filter is the way to go. This one lets you adjust rgb, just set r,g,b to their lowest and set the filter to it's highest.

On a weird note, I was seeking this app out because I saw an interesting episode of the nature of things. It's a canadian show so some might not have heard of it. This episode was called lights out, it described the health issues people have by simply being exposed to light (from electricity) that we wouldn't normally have been, because as far as man goes, electricity is a recent phenomenon. Anyway, it seems not all light is bad, for example exposure to light sources from a flame at night (as our ancestors would) does not have this ill effect. They were basically saying it's light in the blue spectrum (similar to the day sky) that affects our production of melatonin and can give rise to cancer and other ill health effects.
It's may sound silly but the episode had me thinking to lower blue light spectrum from electronics at night before going to bed.
The episodes live stream but I wanted to watch them on the subway. They are an rtsp stream for mobile. I was hoping vlc for android had the ability to record an rtsp like it's desktop counterpart but it doesn't. What's the point of vlc on android if it loses the bulk of it's features? Does anyone know a way of capturing an rtsp stream? I know of linux utilities that can but the rtsp stream address comes out fairly convoluted and I think it redirects to the actual stream behind the scenes.
They don't stream to the US, but if anyone wants to check out the episode I'm talking about it's here:
http://www.cbc.ca/natureofthings/episode/lights-out.html
And if anyone has a way of capturing these streams it would be greatly appreciated.

I just assumed he was looking for a dumber wife that would laugh at his jokes...

+1 to Lux. Worth the cost, and fixed (masked) the screen flicker issues I was having from the WiFi ground.

[Q] Dark screen app (?) to reduce brightness? Is it possible?

Hello
I have a Samsung I9000 Galaxy S which is way too bright even at the lowest setting.
Anyways so I got an idea of an app but I dont know whether its technically possible or not!
So is it possible to create an App that works just like a transparent dark glass which covers your screen and you see through it and can perform all functions normally but due to the app the screen becomes dark so that it doesn't strain the eyes?
Also current "minimum" brightness on the Galaxy S is "10" even with 3rd party apps. Is it a limitation of Android or Samsung firmware? Also is it technically possible to go into - values such as "-30" ?
Ah, great topic. I have the same problem on my HTC Desire. Interesting to hear what the experts have to say.
Yeah these amoled screens are uber bright!
Download AdjBrightness from the market, it rules.

I have read on the net that it doesnt work for Galaxy S.
The app is called screen filter. Don't really know too much about it other than it works fantastically well and its free. Reduces brightness to almost nothing if you want, and the app functions as a widget for toggling as well.
I've been going around posting this in as many places as i can because this freaking app really helped me out, I could hardly look at the screen in the dark at all but now its good to go. Hopefully help some new galaxy purchasers out.
You can't go into minus values but you can set it to 0, which is 1 above the screen actually being off.
You need to be rooted, then you can just adjust the value with adb.

Washed out still after applying fix

Hey everyone, so I set smart dimmer off but it doesn't help. I turn on my tablet and it's always washed out and quite a bit of ghosting. Anyone know any way of fixing it?

Same here. I sent it back. Ordered a new one a couple of weeks later from another place, same issue.
There are many articles and threads about this problem, but unfortunately Google and ASUS seem to ignore it. And even here on xda, people get defensive about their Nexus 7 and downplays the problem, attacks DisplayMate for scientifically illustrating the problem etc.
It annoys the hell out of me because I _want_ to love the Nexus 7, I _want_ to _want_ to keep it. It has great hardware, great software and even the IPS screen is great, but unfortunately the end result is a display that is seriously miscalibrated. The simplest calibration tests of black level, shadow detail, white crush and saturation and intensity (especially of the green primary) shows the major issues. Worst, it is obvious in daily use all the time.
I probably will end up sending this second Nexus 7 back as well and buy something with a half-decent visual experience.
use this:

or try a kernel which has tegra prism disabled

I already have PRISM disabled. It helps a tiny bit but does not begin to solve the problem at all. Gamma, white crush, green saturation and intensity, contrast etc. still looks like something from 5+ years ago.
And there are a billion threads about this on the internet. I wish Google would take it serious, but...

I don't know if I go lucky but when I went to safe mode and turn my device of overnight then in the morning I no longer experience this problem. Note I experienced your problem for 3 months and just yesterday the issue was resolved simply by doing what I stated. Good luck let me know what happens

Anyone has nausea like me ???

This seems weirdest issue I've ever been got which I can't explain why...
When browsering web on my Nexus 4, sometimes the white background dimmer by it self and brighter suddenly whenever it wants. When it dimmers, I feel so nausea, headache and dizzy instantly - like something wrong comes straight to my eye.
Currently setting is max brightness, using franco kernel with RGB is 255 255 255. I love this Nexus 4 so much but I think I have to get back to my iphone (never been like this before)
Anyway, anyone knows how to flash faux 2v05b without being freezed at Google Logo ??
Thks for viewing
- go to a doctor, seriously. As amazing as xda might be, we won't cure illnesses.
- don't flash anything else, go to the doctor first.
- don't use the iPhone either for now, go to the doctor first.
Alternatively, stop trolling. You must be old enough as you own a n4 and an iPhone. Trolling is very bad for your health, makes you dizzy amongst other things. And the girls avoid you too..
there was a browser setting on my gs2 i think... that would auto bright the browser depending on what was being shown on it.
An app called LUX can help.

whoa nelly
Agreed, have yourself checked out. I am not a doctor, but seriously not to sound alarming or like a worrywart, but reactions like that to sudden light change could mean a few things. Eye, ear other infection, epilepsy or something else.
I used to get nausea playing duke nuke'm, doom, descent and other 3d type games on older slower PCs. It's something to with video tricking the mind into thinking you're really moving. (Motion sickness).
use the phone when you be sober ..

Galaxy s4 screen throttling

Anyone notice throttling on the screen in terms of contrast tone and brightness. You cannot turn it off no matter what settings you choose. One good example is when you pull up the keyboard and the brightness is fairly low, there's a huge color shift that pops up till the keyboard tray is gone again. Could a kernel fix this?

i am trying to get some help from international model guys on this; mine DOES NOT change contrast and brightness if i disable every auto feature AND ALL POWER SAVING features. I have seen this on another GS4 and not on my own or my GF's with everything disabled. I wonder if there is a difference in screens or part batches and sensitivity or a different controller chip; another thing im looking into.
also the ambient light sensor; try covering it completely. i think that and the 'auto detect/modify screen contrast/colors' is running no matter what on certain GS4's.

Yeah I've tried it all seems like its at the kernel level. I've had 3 galaxy s4s and they've all done it...

I'm sure someone will make a kernel that fixes these weird quirks that only I seem to notice lol

i have calibrated many monitors before; maybe when the bootloader is unlocked and there is a full ROM dump someone could assist me to find the screen calibration adjustments so i can create a professional AdobeRGB and sRGB profile for the screen as well as rec 709 full and 16-235 video modes etc. I am not the only one interested in this; the Galaxy S III, Note II, and Google Nexus 7 are all excellent candidates for field monitors with excellent gamut. I just want mine to display colors as accurately as is possible for the moment; i keep all my demo reel footage and music videos i shot on it; a proper 'flat' image is important before editing, and my company we shoot raw, yet even a simple 8 bit example of before/after editing in raw environment would help our clients.
This is the first mobile full HD screen capable of such broadcast range of gamut; would be incredible to use as proper field monitor with correct calibrations.

Screen throttling

So as you guys may know the screen gets throttled no matter what. But if you go on aokp the throttling isn't there so does anyone know what makes it happen and if we can stop it on touchwiz.

Im stupid..what does throttle do?
Maybe I have it and don't even know it.
Everyone does its easily visible when the brightness is low and you're on chrome or anything for that matter even YouTube. If you bring the keyboard up you can see a color shift I'm the browser and if you are playing a YouTube video through the app you can see a color shift when you press on the screen while a video is being played. It's quite annoying but clearly a touchwiz thing. You can't even turn it off.

thanks for educating me here....
I just don't see this, could it be I am old and wear glasses
Settings > My device > Display > Auto adjust screen tone. Does unchecking that fix it for you?
No it doesn't. It's integrated in touch wiz
I tried to duplicate and don't see it either--I am old--
I do have tone unchecked though
its dynamicaly adjusting to help you get the best view, i dint mind it at all haha
Actually, I just started noticing this with certain downloaded keyboards as well. I don't remember it happening with the stock keyboard, but I REALLY notice it while using Kii Keyboard in certain apps, but only darkly-themed apps. It's less noticeable with bright backgrounds.
