[Lack of OTG][Proposal] Crazy solution - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What do you think about a wireless storage? Think about those SDCards with built-in WiFi. If independently powered, they could be used as kind of external memory with WiFi-Direct.
What do you think? Crazy or possible?

Thought about Eye-Fi already. This thing needs a power.
Ok, now serious:
We need someone, who have: Eye-Wi, SD card reader, usb-micro usb cable converter, Nexus 4.
Two questions here:
1.Can Eye-Wi, cable connected to the phone, be powered?
2.If yes, will it recognize the device and connect in any way?

Eye-Wi sounds really interesting.

if i could find my Eye-Wi, I would try this, but in my other test with a micro-usb micro sd adapter and micro-usb y cable, the adapter would not receive power from the phone's micro-usb charger....the Eye Wi I had actually had the SD Card Reader built in, in order to test this you need you're phone's charger, micro-usb y cable, and Eye Wi...they way it should work is that your phone charger plugs into the y-cable the y-cable female micro usb end goes into the phone and the Eye Wi into the USB...if that doesnt work disconnect the y cable from phone and plug the Eye Wi into the phone charger directly to see if that will power the Eye Wi and if your phone sees the wireless network...this alternative if it works is fine if you're by a wall outlet all the time, but travelling on say a plane or train then no, you're better off with a self powered wifi drive/reader.

D.i.y usb otg adapter/cable

Hi,
I made my own usb otg adapter from a plain usb a to micro b adapter. You have to connect pin 4 /which is not connected/ to ground to fire up host mode.
Edit: It is not easy to dismantle a usb connector or adapter and it requires soldering. So I guess anybody with the necessary skills will find the pin on his own. I will not post photos because my solution is far from being pretty.
For everybody else: the nokia USB OTG cable is wired the same way so it is very likely that it will work. (on Hungarian forums I saw references that it works, but I can not guaratee it.)
Tommorow I will go buy one and report.
USB Host mode will allow to connect USB pendrive, mouse, keyboard etc. to the SGS II.

this is very useful for people like me who knows how to solder things, but for the people who have absolutly no Idea what you are talking about, you should add more details/pictures to the OP so the people who doesen't know much about electronics know what you are talking about, and what benefits it brings for them.
I myself will probably make one or more, so I don't have to always take my USB OTG with me all the time.

OTG Cable USB (B) to Micro USB (A) Powered with AAA batteries
As one knows, Samsung has promised a HMI Cable
You noticed it is not only a cable but a box out of which you may plug in an extra power supply.
The obvious reason is if the passive monitor does not furnish 5V, the phone will rapidly be out of power.
Now you know that to obtain video rather than anything less, Pin 4 (sense) and 5 (Ground) of micro USB (male A) must be connected with a 365K resistance.
I suppose the dock Samsung is selling for I9100 (yes, I have it) is grounded at 1000K as it provides audio with remote, and yes, the dock provides power supply via extra micro USB as well.
I come to my point: If I want to access any USB data On the Go, I need a cable OTG with 2 ports: USB 2.0/3.0 (female, B sided) to a micro USB (male, A sided, grounded but with no resistance = 0K). Many of them exist on the market out there.
But it is quite impossible to use because of lack of power supply in the passive device (let’s say a handy 1T HDD usually powered via Host connexion !
Would it be possible to insert some sort of receptacle for AAA battery in the middle of such a cable to provide for power while you are for a long time out of access to an electric plug ? Does such a cable exist somewhere to buy ? What would be the sheme to mount this ? HELP !
Instead of shorting pin 4 and 5 from within the cable head, would it also be viable to short them from within the device itself? Say if I disassembled the phone to access the back of the female usb micro connector and soldered the pins. Would there be any damage caused if the permanently shorted pins 4 and 5 (within the device) is connected to a charging adapter/PC?

Noob question: TF onboard flash; included USB adapter

Hello - please excuse the noob question. I tried searching, but couldn't find anything that addressed my question specifically.
1) Is there any difference in performance between the onboard memory and the memory you put in the micro-SD slot? They're both "flash" memory right? Granted, some micro-SD cards are faster than others, so I wonder what class of flash Asus uses in the onboard memory? Would the 16GB version perform any different from the 32GB version?
2) I'm still a little confused about the box contents of the Asus TF and how to use it (I don't have one yet, hence the confusion). It seems like you get a USB cable and a wall adapter? The USB cable can be used to connect the TF to your computer for quickly transferring data. The USB cable can also be connected to the wall power adapter for charging? Is that right? But the wall adapter seems to provide more than the typical 5+ charge voltage that other generic USB power adapters provide, because the Asus wall power adapter can charge the TF in about an hour. Is any of that correct?
But the USB cable can't be used as a USB host, like for a thumb drive (for obvious reasons of not being a female connector, but even if you do the male-female conversion)?
3) I've heard of people connecting their Transformer to an external hard drive. Are they using the USB ports provided by the keyboard dock? Or is there a USB adapter out already that allows the TF to act as a USB host?
Thanks!

1) Im using a class 10 card and ive never noticed any 'lag' accessing stuff on the card rather than internal
2) Yes the USB cable supplied can either be used with the wall plug as a charger or directly to a PC for file transfer/sync. I believe people have had mixed results using a mele/female adapter. ASUS are allegedly releasing an official male/female adapter that may have more success.
3) I use an external HD with my keyboard dock. Its USB 2.0 and provides power to to the external drive just fine.
Hope this helps

wilbur - how are you connecting the external HD to your Asus? Via the keyboard dock? Or do you have some kind of special USB cable that connects directly to the TF?

Xoom Camera kit not working as OTG cable

No notification pops up, my phone just doesnt seem to recognize the cable. Any reason? I was told the xoom camera kit cable would work for otg usb.
hello? can somebody help?
nobody? okay...coool
You'll need external power to power it
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
its a pendrive, which should work unplugged. It just doesnt seem to even recognize that its there. Do you think the cable is defective?
In the usb otg tutorial video in the accessories section it shows that plugging in the cable without anything attached to it should trigger a notification. If it doesn't, it's probably the cable

okay, I guess the motorola xoom cable does not work for some stupid reason. Or its defective...well ****.
I guess, it's missing a resistor to trigger OTG mode.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1092493&highlight=usb+otg+resistor) you'll find detailed instructions on what makes one cable work and another one fail. apparently, you'd have to open the micro usb plug and connect pin 4 and 5. the connection between pin 4 and 5 determine, what kind of connection it is: charging, sync, usb otg, mhl, trigger download mode... and indeed, that is done by putting in different resistor strengths.
I got one of these, only £2.50 shipped and works perfectly, its great fun plugging in a mouse!

What are you using your USB adapter for?

I just ordered one of these from vzw for $20. So, what are some of the things these forum readers are doing with their's?

I am using mine for reading memory cards and USB drives, works great!
Also plug my Sony camera into it and it instantly uploads my pics.
I use mine to avoid Kies and the inability to just access my 16gig as a USB drive. I drag what I need to my internal storage and be done with it. Nice.
I use it to drag files to the Tab when I'm not using File Share FTP sharing.
Using it with this so I don't have to get a SD/micro-SD adapter.

Mine Tab doesnt work with the USB adapter at all, it doesn't see anything I put into USB connection. ( 4 GB flash thumb stick, external hard drive etc...) Do you have to set up something in the settings? On my Asus Transformer the keypad dock read even 750 GB external hard drive via USB. Is my connector faulty?

I don't get it... How does this relate to the Tab? Doesn't the Sammy dongle thingy just accept USB? I have one of those small USB readers that accepts full SD cards, but with an SD card adapter which you slip your Micro SD card into, it works just fine. Not sure what this device you mention here does for you.
EDIT: OK, I get it. The reader in your link takes just the microSD card and not a regular SD card where you would need an adapter. Personally, I have this little oval USB SD reader that has caps on both ends. Very small. I just leave an SD to microSD adapter in it, and just plug it in and slide in my microSD. No little cable. I could also just leave an adapter in my laptop, as it has a built in SD card slot... But, yeah, for the Sammy side of things, my little reader should be just fine.
I just received my USB adapter (ordered from Amazon for ~$17) and use it exclusively to plug in a microSD USB adapter.

Which ROM are you running? At least as of 2-3 weeks ago, Bonsai completely broke USB adapter functionality.
Has anyone tried a usb female to female adapter/gender changer. This way we could just use the usb cable thats included and the $3-4 adapter rather than using the $20 adapter?
Along with SD readers and thumb drives and cameras, I also use it for my YubiKey.

That won't work!
Data Connector Pinout
You have to have the 20k ohm between pins 13 and 15. This tells the Tab to go into OTG host mode.
EDIT:
Oh and I am using my adapter for this: DSLR Controller
I've been using mine to access my Western Digital "My Passport Elite" 320GB hard drive via a powered USB hub. I also use it to access a couple of thumb drives.
I use it to play SNES and Playstation games via emulators, using my xbox 360 controller.
I've read a lot that you have to order the USB adapter. Mine was included?
But the original Samsung seals was broken 2 times and the third was not. So I guess they included it afterwards?

No, it won't work. It requires specific resistors to be present on dock connector pins not brough out to the USB side of the data/charging cable.

[Q] usb otg gamepad question

I have an otg cable, yet none of my accessories work with it and my RAZR MAXX. My question is whether or not I need a powered hub when using the OTG cable. I have seen set ups of other android models using a SIXAXIS controller and otg cable, yet no hub. In this case, it the powered hub not needed since the controller itself is supplying its own power?
Thanks,
Neverused
USB controllers don't work?? I'm interested in this as well

Download USB Device Info:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=aws.apps.usbDeviceEnumerator
When you open the app you should see 0 devices under Android and Linux tabs. Now connect just your OTG cable nothing plugged into it and hit refresh, something should show up, usually under the Linux tab that identifies the USB host. Even if the USB host doesn't supply power this will still work as I have tested it on my Touchpad which has no OTG power.
If you saw something appear when you connected the OTG cable, than OTG is in the Razr M. Now try connecting your gamepad and refresh the device list. If its not showing up then there is either something wrong with OTG or you need external power. This program will ID any USB device connected, even those which Android doesn't support since its just matching the device against a list it has. Try getting a USB keyboard/mouse working ad those are universally supported on Android and would confirm if USB host works.
Questions go in the question forum too...

An OTG cable has a extra pin in it that is tied to ground in a OTG cable which tells the hardware to switch to OTG mode. A regular USB cable will leave this pin open.
If I'm able to peel open this adapter that I got, and jump pin 4 to 5 should it work as an OTG cable?

Its possible, as shown here:
http://tech2.in.com/how-to/accessor...sb-otg-cable-for-an-android-smartphone/319982
For me I'd rather just buy an OTG cable, but if you have regular microUSB cables laying around, go for it.
Bought an OTG cable
Bought a simple OTG adapter from newegg. So far....plugged in a mouse and my camera. Both work flawlessly, my camera gives me the choice of either either MTP (?) that goes straight to gallery and image import, or Storage which prompts to a new usb mount. Have not tried a gamepad yet, I have 2 floating around somewhere but not sure what game to try.
