Screen Burn Effect

Hey all,
I was turning my screen off last night before heading to bed when I noticed that I could still see the picture frame widget while I was stood under my bedroom light....it looked like it had burnt onto the screen as you could only see it faintly while direct light. I then turned it on and off again and the picture frame widget disappeared but area in the top right hand corner of the screen could now be visable again under direct light. I flicked the phone on and off again a couple more times and eventually it was completely blank.....anyone else experienced this? Is my handset faulty or is this just a characteristic of mini TFT screen? I know it hasn't actually burnt the image on the screen as I don't leave the screen on long enough for it to occur and its not just residual light as it doesn't fade, but it will go completely blank after a couple more on and off's.

Aaahhhh...thanks dead101, so just a characteristic of LCD screens....had me worried for a bit!

haven't checked out that terminology yet, but i am pretty sure that LCDs do not have the burn in effect in the way that the old CRTs did.

I've noticed this phenomenon as well, and haven't noticed it on any other device. It always goes away if I press on and off again. I don't know that it is image persistence, because that seems to require leaving it off for a period of several hours to remove the effect, not switching it back on and off quickly.
I'm worried it may actually be a fault where the screen sometimes won't switch off completely. One night, my Streak went from full charge to dead in about 8 hours while on aeroplane mode. Could be unrelated, or could be that the screen was still drawing a current. Who knows... it never happened again. Annoyingly I could not get the "what's been using my battery."
Either way, whenever I notice that part of the screen is still visible after putting it on standby, I always switch on and off to clear it.

Nexus 7 keeps turning off at random intervals

This has been going on for about a week or so.
At first I kept finding it off in the morning after charging, and then it became more common. Mostly happens when the screen is off but not always, I've had it turn off twice whilst I'm using it for example. A couple of times it has needed a long press to restart it before it will turn back on. Right now it has turned itself off and will not turn back on.
Battery has never fallen below about 50% throughout so it cant be that. It doesn't get heavy use so I'm not convinced its overheating. I had a look through the app list and none of them seem to be obvious candidates for the problem, and if i cant get the thing to turn back on I cant even test that.
I think this one is going back to HMV asap but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for me to avoid the problem with its replacement, or if anyone is having the same problem. Its a shame as I've been really enjoying my Nexus.

Hi, I had the exact same problem and ordered a replacement from the play store. I never found a way to fix it, I would recommend you just get a new one from HMV. I hope this helps

This actually just started happening to me yesterday on my 3 day old 16GB Nexus 7. I kept mine plugged into the AC all weekend, and yesterday watched it shut down itself once. Thought it was a fluke and just turned it back on...left it running overnight...pick it up this morning and it's turned itself off yet again. I guess I'll have to return this one before it completely doesn't turn on anymore!

Bah. Thought that might be the case.
2 days off charge (and some time on charge) and mine still wont turn on.
Definitely going back for replacement.
Elsydeon, it sounds like you should do the same. Took about 4 or 5 days to go from irregular to brick.

I seem to be getting the same thing... Once every day or two I pick up my Nexus and the screen won't turn on, I hold the power button and it starts booting up. I haven't had this while charging (maybe because the screen is on while charging??)
For those of you who traded in for a replacement, did this solve the issue for you?

I was getting this, but was using one of those magnetic cover/cases. If I wrap the cover round the back of the N7 whilst using it, the magnet in the case/cover is sometimes strong enough to turn the device off from the back!

Just wondering as well like the last guy if swapping for a new one helped this issue.
I actually have looked at the battery data and think somewhere the nexus has gotten a power spike that turns it off but not sure if that definitely is the issue.
If it is, perhaps it's where we are plugging in or a failure with the AC plug?
Ideas? I've attached a photo. I hope it uploaded.

unless i hear different from anyone here, going to exchange it for a new one today ... only been 2 weeks from Staples.
Actually going through the data, it's happend the last 3 days now.
I wake up to the white battery symbol.
By the way, for future ref, is bootloading warranty killing? I am in the process or restoring now just in case.
Thinking of getting their replacement plan now too because of this episode.

Nexus 7 32GB Display Keep Turning Off

But then I stop the video, go to the home screen, and it still turns off. I already replaced one last week and now its happening to my new one. Anyone got answers? I'm going to call google device support today. Maybe if enough people call, they'll do something about it. Their # is 888-836-3987.

My NEW 32 tab worked out fine for a night and woke up today to the full battery indicator and tablet off again.
I have a new insight though, somehow the battery temp is rocketing to 100 and I'm guessing that is when it shuts off.
It may be because I am using SetCPU to limit my CPU speed to 300mhz when the screen is off. Maybe the tablet is trying to update all my apps while I am sleeping? It shouldn't use so much power though.
I'm going to try to create a new command to let it use it's whole CPU as long as it's on AC and screen off and see what happens tonight.

Happened overnight again. No insights? Does anyone think my nexus will finally brick sometime?

Nexus 7 Screen Keeps shutting off - Fixed
To those experiencing issues with their Nexus 7 screen randomly shutting off.
I just received one for Christmas, and thought this dang thing sucks. The screen would stay off and only show for half a second when I click the lock button to turn it back on.
The issue what the case. The the case, when folding back, contains a small piece of metal on the click. This little connection, thought not direct, causes the screen to shut off. I've tested it out multiple times just to make sure.
Again the FIX is, keep metal away from the back of the nexus, it doesn't like anything that can cause a magnetic field. Even if the metal is enclosed by something.

For those of you who are experiencing intermittent screen display going to sleep mode or turning off you can fix it by removing your tablet cover. Some third party tablets come with different strength magnets stitched inside the cover. The magnet is used to activate the nexus tablet smart cover functionality. If you flip the cover to the back of the tablet the magnetic field may cause the tablet to think it should turn off while in use. Get rid of your cover reboot your tablet and notice that the screen will stop turning off. Hope this helps.

Hi, I also had similar problems with my Nexus 7. After removing the back of the unit, I saw that the battery was nearly unplugged. I simply popped the connector in and voila! no more SOD, turning off, nothing.
So, the Nexus was probably turning itself off because there was randomly no more power comming from the battery.

I was researching before going to get my Nexus 7 replaced today as it also started having this issue. After reading your post, I took your advice and removed the back to find that my battery connection was also barely intact! Thus it would lose power any time it was bumped slightly to that side. Now that the connection is securely in place, I've had no more problems!! Thanks to you StefGou!!!

Hey guys. A few hours ago I encountered the same said problem. I woke up to find the battery was depleted so I charged it. It turned on by itself and stated that I have 6% battery left. As I wait, suddenly the screen was like distorted and give me static sound then shut off. Numerous trials later end up the same. So I just put on the charger thinking to let the battery full. To my surprise, there was no indicator that my N7 is charging. I just leave it charging and left. About an hour I got back it still nit charging. I boot the N7 and it still on 6% battery. So I followed you guys handsomely instructions to remove the 3rd party cover and now my N7 is back. Thanks guys. But I wonder why it is happening now? I've been using the cover since forever.

Turbo 2 screen problems.

Tonight, my turbo 2 started acting up. I pulled it out to make a call, and the top 1/2 inch of my screen was flickering purple. That went away after about an hour, but then the whole screen went black and unresponsive. After trying to shut it off and reboot for a bit, it just randomly started working again. Full battery. Everything works, except the top 1/2 inch of display is completely black, every now and then, it will be green. If the phone sleeps, even for a second, it won't come back on, for about an hour, then it will randomly start working again. Never got wet, or dropped. Any body had an issue like this?

There's a known issue with a green line on the screen, I believe the speculation is a bad batch of screens got out, you're gonna have to exchange it for a new phone.

I am currently having this same issue. Going to VZ today to see about resolving it, as really hard to do anything when its doing that. Top 1/2 or more of the screen is flickering purple, then the screen will not let you turn up the brightness, all programing in the back works, just a LED issue. Restarted and same thing, let it charge Off all night, and back to normal after a few minutes using it. Very odd, not sure what is going on.

I have a similar issue, and I am trying to recover some data from mine. It seems booting into bootloader mode and using ADB yields nothing
I also cannot use MTP, as when I plug my phone in it's not in MTP mode for some reason, and i Can't see how to turn it on (screen is black). Digitizer still works. Does anyone have any suggestions? Can someone here maybe take a video of themselves plugging the phone in via USB and then selecting MTP on the phone? perhaps I can do it blindly...
Really don't want to give this phone back to vz until I get my data off of it.

About eight hours of pissing and moaning and I finally figured out:
Using the replacement phone, I just mimicked every movement on the one with the dead screen. I hit the "cast" button on the notifications panel and casted the screen to my chromecast, which in turn allowed me to set up MTP mode and/or anything else I wanted.

S7 Edge screen issues - HELP ME!

Hey Guys,
My release edition S7 Edge started acting up last Sunday. As I was using the phone, it noticed the display to have strange, colored barcodes appearing as smudges on the screen. Pink/purple seems to be the dominant color type and they are most severe when texts are displayed on screen. The phone seems to get hot quicker than normal, and gets hotter than normal when under toll. The screen usually DOES NOT TURN ON AT ALL when the phone is warm/hot. Everything about the phone still works, all functions work.
It has been a few days since I encountered this issue and it has not subsided. What I did noticed is that if the phone was hot and the screen does not turn on, I could cool down the phone externally via air conditioning vents and it would turn back on when its cool enough. The barcode artifacts are also less prevalent, to non-existent when the phone is cold to touch.
I initially thought this to be an display panel issue that needs replacing. Out of warranty repairs is going to be about CAD $340. With the cooling down work around, I am hoping it may be a less expensive to fix issue.
What do you guys think? Help me out!
TL;DR. Phone started having pink and purple barcodes all of a sudden. Works perfectly with the barcode. Display wont turn on when warm/hot. Everything is back to normal if the phone is cool/cold to touch, until it starts warming up due to usage.

galaxy s5 display issues

My galaxy s5 started acting up a month ago. The screen will flicker green/yellow then go black, or stay black entirely. It got a lot worse recently where it will only work hitting the power button 1% of the time. Is this a hardware issue? Or software?
When the screen dims before sleep, it spazzes out too. I've noticed it works better when it warms up from charging too. But still fails to display way too much. It still registers touch when black. I replace the battery a few months ago BTW.
If the device has no hope, can you guys reccomend a good cheap phone?

Put your phone on max brightness & set your phone to never turn the screen off
Leave your phone screen turned on with max brightness for a at least a few hours
If that doesn't solve it then you may need a new screen - it is a hardware fault on these devices with these types of screens

If I were you I'd also follow the advice of

If all fails you could buy a new display for your S5. I did so myself recently as I kept having "snowstorms" on my display when I turned my phone/ the screen on. Worked for me, managed to get a new and genuine one from a reputable seller on eBay. Hope you won't have to resort to the latter though.

@TheFixItMan thanks for the advice, I tried it last night, and it didn't improve at all. Is there any possibility that the device isn't giving the screen enough power? Because I have better success when its plugged in. What do you think caused this to happen after 5 years?
@James160103 Thanks, I tried it and it didn't work. I'm exploring all my options. For $10 more then an OEM gs5 screen, I can get a gs7.

Perhaps it's got something to do with your new battery then, did you buy a genuine Samsung battery? How about sticking the old one back in and seeing if that makes a difference?
Also try using a genuine Samsung power adapter and charging cable.
It's worth a try anyway. Let me know if that made a change.
If it doesn't help you could remove the screen from the phone and press the flex cable from the digitizer downwards to see if it might be a loose connection between the motherboard and the screen that's causing the problem. I'd try that as a last resort though as you could damage your display in the process (replaced the screen myself and managed not to break anything, did it for the first time). There's lots of videos on YouTube (I recommend JerryRigEverything) that could help you out.
While this is unlikely, you may want to try before buying an S7.
Also, try booting into TWRP and playing around with the brightness settings and turning the display on and off again to see if it's some bug with the OS (again, unlikely but it's worth trying).

@James160103 my old battery can't hold a charge, so I disposed of it. My new one has been fine for a few months without any problems. As far as a charger, I have a better charger then the stock, and a thick gauge nylon wrapped cord, that's been doing fine for the last 2-3 years.
The whole display issue isn't just on the OS, when I boot normal or into recovery it stays black, or flickers for a split second.
I did notice that if I hold it in front of my car vent, with full heat. Once its warm it seems to work, just until it cools off. I'm guessing its a hardware issue at this point, but I'll try to check the connection.
