Got this notification after a reboot today. I don't remember installing anything that should do any kind of automatic backups once in a blue moon on reboots. Any idea what does this?
If you're running Jelly Bean, try tapping-and-holding the notification, clicking App Info and see if you get a system app or an app that you installed back as a result. Might not be of much use, but you may be able to narrow down your search.
I am neither running jb, nor able to reproduce this
have you got Google backup enabled?

Yes, but i've got it enabled since... forever, and never seen this message, not even once.
BTW: I've always been wondering if it's actually possibly to manually review and/or fetch what's on that Google backup.

Hm, thanks
Honestly, there is barely anything in there. I though it was supposed to (almost) store the entire /data/data in there.
I got it too, but on GN.
I just got the same notification! Never seen it before.
Verizon Galaxy Nexus, 4.1.1. When I long press the notification, app info brings up locus, a geocaching app, which has no notifications, and doesn't do backups. I've had locus (which I used once a long time ago) on the phone for well over a year.
Also odd, I had to reboot to make the notification go away.
sean
Hmm, i have locus. And it had an update recently. Ill ask the dev on his forum, locus dev is very cooperative, thanks
Update: it is Locus, indeed, it now got automatic scheduled backup module, can be disabled from Locus via menu - functions - backup manager. I would never guess by the notification text, thanks.
EDIT: This is the Locus thread mentioning the functionality.
PS: Topic closed, i guess. Thanks everyone for help.

At the bottom of my Titanium Backup application list I see two entries: `com.android.htcprofile` and `recovery`. Both are crossed out, as if they stand for uninstalled applications. They are not backed up, so there's no reason for them to appear in the list. Refreshing the list does not make these entries to go away.
What are these entries? What is the importance of having them in the list? Why does Titanium Backup display these entries in the list, even though Titanium Backup itself seems to understand that they are "uninstalled" and not backed up?
BUMP
I was wondering the same thing, I don't see Recovery anywhere in my list but I do see com.android.htcprofile
I'm having problems with my widgets disappearing on the stock Rom. Only on the stock homescreen not ADW. Was thinking this could be the cause possibly?

HTC profile is a stock application much like blackberry has different applications. Same basic idea. When you are are home, and you have the "home profile" active it will not pull your work emails. If you are at work it pulls everything but lowers the volume not to disturb people around you.
and i do not have "recovery" on mine so i do not know what it does.

Well, what I'd like to know is not what "HTC profile" does. The main question here is really about Titanium Backup: what exactly does that mean when Titanium Backup shows in its list an application that is crossed-out?
Normally, Titanium Backup shows a crossed-out application when you uninstall something. An uninstalled app is shown crossed-out until you refresh the list. After refresh it disappears. Sometimes, an uninstalled application might remain in the list if you previously backed it up. So, a persistent crossed-out entry normally means "it is uninstalled, but you still have a backup for it".
In my case I see `com.android.htcprofile` and `recovery` crossed-out in the list, but I have no backup for these applications. So, the question is why Titanium Backup keeps showing them in the list? What is Titanium Backup trying to tell me by keeping these crossed-out entries in its list?
Same here. DAMN, and I just did a system wipe, thinking I unistalled something by mistaki
I ended up at this thread when I Googled after encountering the same thing. I came across it because I was trying to free up some space. It is associated with a 4 MB+ text file which Titanium can't delete. I think the text file is the reason it's showing up.
I'm trying to install some of the Humble Indie Bundle 6 games on my N4 and I'm running into a problem I've never faced before. The APK files download just fine, but when it comes to actually opening them to start the installation, it won't install. The button that says "install" does nothing when I press it. I checked in my security settings and "unknown sources" are allowed. I included screenshots of both these in the attached files. I even tried un-selecting the "verify apps" option, in case the humble bundle app had been removed from their white list for some reason, it still won't install.
I thought it might be a bug with the Humble Bundle beta app so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it, but it too is getting stuck on the installation. It downloads just fine but it won't install. I've tried rebooting my phone, still no luck. I'm on the latest Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Has anyone else been getting this problem, or does anyone have any idea on how I could fix it? I didn't pay much for the games but it sort of sucks to have bought them and be unable to play any of them like this.
I'd like to try with some more third party apps to see if it's all of them, or if it's just the Humble Bundle APKs that are causing me trouble (if it's the later I can probably contact Humble Bundle and ask them for assistance), but I'm not familiar with those. Could someone please recommend some good safe ones I can test out?
My humble bundle beta installed fine. So at least you know the app should work. Sorry can't help you more. Hopefully someone else has a solution. Silly question... have you tried rebooting?

are you running paranoid android? disable halo, or so ive read.
Any app that requires permission to draw over other apps can potentially cause what you're experiencing. Examples include but are not limited to:
- the HALO feature in PA ROMs
- Screen filter apps
- Other floating apps

Could any of that happen if I haven't rooted?
Also,
I've just tried to reinstall TubeMate, another third party app I like. It's APK also refuses to install, which probably means there's a problem with my phone and not just the Humble Bundle app. I'm starting to think I'll have to factory reset the phone, which is certainly do-able, just... not very fun.

Yes, this can happen without root access. I've seen your problem addressed several times in multiple forums and ALL of them is because of a floating app.
Look through your app list. Is there ANY app that, as a feature, floats on top of other apps?
Eg, Facebook Messenger, Screen Filter, Floating Stickies, AirCalc, etc
Just force stop them and you should be able to sideload apk's again.

The phone says 1.68 GB are free, but when I plug it into my desktop it tells me 1.57 GBs. So... somewhere between those two.
EDIT:
Found it... It was the Twilight app (no, not THAT Twilight... lol), it's an app that tints the whole screen a slight redish color so it doesn't hurt my eyes too much when I use the phone in the evening. That must count as a "floating". The moment I disabled that I was able to successfully install the APK. YOU SIR, ohyearar, have won a thanks.
Problem
-------------
Hangouts crashes trying to send SMS after 4.4.3 upgrade. 3rd Party apps do the same. As soon as you start typing hangouts crashes.
You disabled "Messaging" before the upgrade and can't re-enable it. "Enable" is grayed out in the Settings->Apps menu.
Solution
---------
In the Settings->apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. This will fix sending SMS/MMS. You can't have it disabled in 4.4.3 safely.

OK I found a fix. In the apps menu - the 3 dots menu has a "Reset App Preferences" option. It re-enables ALL disabled apps. Not ideal since I'll have to re-disable the others I don't want. But at least it gets messaging re-enabled.
That makes SMS work again oddly enough. Just need to deal with having a "messaging" app in the drawer that I don't use I guess.

Nice! Thanks for posting the fix, could come in handy for me once I switch to 4.4.3 as I have 68 services/apps frozen =P
I also had this issue. I factory reset, which is usually a decent idea after updates. It definitely had something to do with messaging being disabled and I couldn't reenable it either. Glad you found an alternate fix, loving the update so far

Yeah if I had been rooted and done titantium backup recently, that would have been my approach too. I didn't want to have to redo all my apps and settings etc. Glad I didn't have to.
I didn't use TiBu to restore. It's weird but this phone is the first that I don't really back things up like I used to. Mostly cause I have no risk of breaking stuff via flashing nightlies and the like. I've had iffy experiences restoring old data on to new builds so I started from scratch. So far so good.
Yeah I had this too. After the update, i could receive but not send SMS/MMS. Had the stock app previously disabled and then the enable button was gone. Drove me absolutely crazy last night and most of today. Tried half a dozen SMS apps and even downloaded two entire Roms to get their MMS.apk and try to install them (which did not work at all). Even deleted all my messages with an SMS backup app. Nada. Moto support (obviously bad idea) said to clear cache for entire phone, which totally could have worked but was completely unhelpful. I did dozens of Google searches about it and came up empty every time. I was just about to give in to a factory reset, which I consider the my last resort, and I checked the action overflow in the disabled apps section and found the "reset app preferences". Then just browsing XDA for battery tips a few minutes later, I came across then. I even checked the Dev section earlier. But I guess I should have checked general. Thanks for putting this out there for others to find.
Thanks for this solution. Made life better for me. I guess 4.4.3 doesn't allow us to disable the messaging app.
You are the man! I thought I was the only one having the problem. Thank you! :good:
me too. I can't believe it took me this long to find this thread. Not being able to send texts was a bummer. I was using some feature called "voicemal.":silly:

The apk name is listed along with the packagename in the list. If you are unsure what things are safe to block/disable. There are plenty of people on the forum that would be willing to help you.
I did not see the package name so I will have run it again and read more carefully or try to change the size of that field.

Here's one thing to think about also, by accident I blocked the Google stock email , not the Gmail. I went back to unblock and I had to re-enter all my emails back again. So what I'm saying after a block and then an un-block it wipes the app. Did you expect that to happen or should I expect that to happen for most apps be turned back on?
Thanks

Thank you !!
There's a new update on the Play Store for the stock Google Phone app. And man they killed one thing I LOVED the most about it, the swipe to the different panels. I would always swipe left to my Favorites, or swipe right to the Contacts, or further swipe to the Voicemail. It was so smooth and fast, to just swipe from anywhere on the screen.
Now it's been moved to the bottom of the screen, no more swiping, now you need to tap on which panel you want. Which to me takes even longer now, and is not as fast and smooth as before.
I have been using the stock Google or ASOP Phone app for years, probably 8 years or so. This change is no bueno.
It was probably done for the benefit of those with phones that had less than quality touch screens and might have activated swipes unintentionally.
I dont mind though.
Oh man. Just go the update, too. I hate it that I can't swipe. In what weird direction is Google moving? I don't get it. They keep removing great features or replacing them with things nobody asked for or things completely out of touch with users.
The argument of the guy above me is kinda invalid. Even the worst digitizer + SoC combo will be able to do a simple swipe. I don't buy that argument, whoever came up with it. Even if they did not. In what world is an inferior, low end device getting a recent Android version on which the latest phone app is available?
Thank god apk mirror exists. AFAIK 18.0.187698947 is the latest and last one with swipe enabled.

I take it you're saying the May security update is when your phone app broke, right? If that's the case, you can try flashing the May factory image after removing -w from the batch file. That 'should' rewrite the phone app, but I am not 100% sure it will. If not, a factory reset/reflash with wipe command left in batch file might be necessary unless someone else has an idea.
Maybe try an earlier version apk from apkmirror.com

Cool! Good to know you didn't have to do a reset.
Based on the layouts for their new apps like the pixel 2 launcher or chrome beta, it looks like they are making apps easier to navigate with one hand by placing things towards the bottom of the screen. Seems easier to navigate than having to reach to the top of the screen in the prior version.
