Share your custom ROMs experience - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Well, to all Galaxy note brickers, Once you get started on flashing custom ROMs, it is an addiction.. Some prefer devs more than others, some prefer TW-based ROMs and others prefer AOSP-based ROMs.. the bottomline is you have to go through a myriad of ROMs before you can settle for a particular one and keeps coming back to, in my case that was Paranoid Android
It all started back in the ICS era (yea, that was long ago) when I rooted my Galaxy note & decided to add some themes to the original TW-based stock ROM, being all afraid of brick issues, I had read every thread taking about possible scenarios for bricking my phone and they all came down to one thing: Flash a safe kernel before you do a ROM flash, a wipe or a restore.. & While there're nowadays lots of safe kernels starting from hydracore universal kernel to PhilZ safe stock kernel, I still stick to Abyss GB kernel whenever I flash a new ROM
So starting to add themes, I sadly found out that the theme library for TW-based ROMs is very limited, but I wasn't ready to switch to something non-samsung, the idea was just inconceivable!
So here it was SweetROM ICS v3, This was my first custom ROM over my galaxy note.. Great ROM, I have to say for a TW-based ROM, it has many features and nice theme and very stable, but it started going a little out of hand regarding the battery drainage starting from v4 which made me update to v5 & that was when the battery didn't last more than 8 hours a day without much time with screen on.
Going back to the threads, researching a ROM, being drunk I decided to flash an AOSP-ROM, it took me a good 3 hours to know what AOSP is, what CM is & why the hell do I need to flash CM9 or CM10 before flashing Paranoid Android, but that was somewhere in October..
What I loved most about PA is the speed, the simple vanilla interface & the lack of bloatware, though I missed Video calls, flip to mute, S Memo & WiFi direct, but I could manage perfectly without them especially with Vivid theme on, love the color combinations.. I still use the phone mode though with per-app tablet mode which I find the golden feature in PA, you can keep your layout as phone but you can use the tablet mode automatically for specific applications *gasp*
But then TW-based JB got leaked, I had to get a taste of XXLS2 but when I tried to flash it, it didn't boot up.. but then I tried RocketROM JB v1 but still didn't boot up - looking back, I should have tried a bit harder before I switched back to PA and giving up on the idea, I should have done a triple wipe three times along with system format (That's what you should do switching from CM to TW) - I even made a flashable zip for it
Little time later, I decided to try other CM ROMs, Jellybam comes next to PA with its AOKP interface along with PA settings but PA settings wasn't working as it should be which really pissed me off, I also tried some other AOSP ROMs that couldn't last for more than a couple of hours and then back to PA
But then, Ultimate ROM XXLS7 v4 came into existence, and I just had to try a piece of that, been told by a friend that I have to do the triple wipe 3 times in a row and then format system, I decided to give it a go.. & Finally a familiar homescreen showed up, Samsung Touchwiz.. I cannot die I felt a bit nostalgic being on PA but the battery drain on Ultimate ROM was immense so I had to swtich to SweetROM JB v1 XXLS7 which was great at first, but then the battery drain became an issue in a day or two (I am a doctor, so I spent lots of my time on the move away from a plug, so I need the maximum battery I can get) and again back to PA !
Then SweetROM JB v2.5 XXLSA was released, great ROM, very stable with everything Samsung.. and you can get some more juice outta battery if you removed most of samsung bloatware (I wouldn't remove something I don't know) .. and most importantly disable media scanner which eats up up to 40% of your battery because it keeps running in the background if you have large folders!
It wasn't until yesterday that I felt nostalgic to PA and had to flash it back
The end
Feel free to share your ROM story

How to disable media scanner?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium

Hi all,
Here is my two pennies worth
Tried all of the JB roms out there. But they all have horrible horrible battery life and are very RAM hungry. So jumped back to ICS. Now on chracks final ics and everything smooth and stable though miss the new features like multiwindow and lockscreen options of lsc .
In JB Alliance gave me the best experience all smooth and no fcs in the two days i tried.
Love CM9,10 and all but simply cant do with out S-Pen features of TW roms. So didnt stick with them.

after flashing manyCM10 and JB ROMs, stopped on eybee's XXLSA.. has stopped me from jumping to XXLSC as well.

was tottering on LSC for a while till i managed to find my balance on a stock deodexed version
i keep an eye on slim bean too coz i know its good.

It would best to disable it from settings -- applications -- running -- media, then stop 'mediascanner service'
Do that after reboot or unplugging from charger
OR.. you can download an app called 'rescan media' from play store which will disable media scanner
however, that will stop media scanner totallty and new media will not appear on gallery / music player unless u actively enable media scanner rescan
Good luck

I felt that when I first used CM10, but they added Spen gestures that I first noticed in PA, I am not sure if it is PA or CM10 feature.. and Gnote is a very adequate replacement for S note
The thing you might actually miss is multiwindow and airview

Back to GB. Phone is Like New!

Okay, so I was on official ICS, several actually. I kept hoping one would prove not to have the Super Brick bug. It seems nobody knows, still.
After working myself into a panic worried I would do something normal and suddenly have a brick on my hands, I flashed back to Gingerbread 2.3.6, Europe Open version (XXLA4). I decided to stick with Touchwiz launcher
After messing around with ICS and several different launchers I guess I had forgotten how smooth the stock is.
Apps are now opening and closing fast, the scrolling in the launcher is super smooth and overall, the phone is working very well. It's like a new machine!
It could help that now that I'm on a safe kernel, I've wiped data and basically started new, but I'm very impressed.
I still wish ICS would come out from Samsung with an announced fixed version. I miss the resizing of widgets and the ICS Voice to text engine. It really is much better.
I would rather feel safe in operating the phone, however, and give up those small ICS features I'm missing.
Has anybody else done the same? What do you think?
Just use Franco kernel or Speedmod kernel for your stock ICS rom and you'll have a "safe" kernel.
Or flash CM9 rom.
Since you are on GB, you can flash a CM9 rom and be perfectly fine easily.
I have to agree alittle with you , always when i reflash to a stock rooted gb, i always feel WOW its so smooth, but thats until i start installing all my apps i use.
I must say that batterylife is better for me on ICS, dunno why.
BTW, is there any significant speed difference between stock ICS (LPY for instance) and CM9? I'm on LPY and Franco r5 and even when overclocking to 1.6 GHz I haven't noticed any speed change.

I've not tried CM9.
Currently its in nightlies but even still from past experiences with stock rom vs cm7 etc i got noticable stability and speed increases. different phones and roms though but generally the idea still applies.
Can't understand all the drama about the ICS update. I just installed mine OTA as instructed, installed Apex Launcher and I couldn't be happier. Everything seems a little smoother too.
Stock email widget works a treat (7x7 grid and above) and with the Smooth Calender widget I am in home screen heaven. Leaves TW on both Gingerbread and ICS.
Just gone from a great phone to a fantastic phone for my needs
I on the other hand still stick with GB right know.
I'm planning to flash CM9 this weekend.
Because I'm getting bored with GB, everyone seems already tried ICS.
I was waiting official save kernel from Samsung, but I just cannot wait anymore to try the ICS.
I will try CM9 mod first I guess, although Franco and CF kernel already release their 'safe' kernel but I still a bit worried since we're not yet sure if there's other reason of the hardbrick
Also back on GB stock with root
I have to agree with this that stock GB is alot more stable than ICS and smoother aswell.
I have tried nearly all the stock ICS releases and all the custom roms based on stock ICS that are in the development forum. Also tried with different kernel combinations and both full wipe / no wipe. Initially most of it seems great then you start using a few apps and it all goes downhill from there.
So GB ftw (well atleast till I get that flashing craving again)
Hi,
Using stock ICS update, had a bricked device after my inability to read, read, read, read & read more, lucky enough to find a solution (not able to disclose, not a technical solution - retail) I use Apex pro launcher & all runs like a dream.
Run chainfires got brickbug? & not happy x19. Rooting may have to wait, confidence bit dented (rooted & flashed my last HTC units & my SG2)
Will read, read & read for a while longer yet.

I also don't understand the complaints for official ICS, I have updated mine and everything is running smooth...there seems to be a problem for people who did not factory reset before upgrading?
i had a lot of restarts - over and over again
i unplugged my battery and it kept happening
since upgrading to ICS - its quite a lot better but still sometimes i get the restarting issue - battery life on ICS is ok - maybe a bit worse than GB

For the restart thing, there maybe an apk which is incompatible? I had this problem after installing several apks from the market when I was on GB once and did a factory reset to solve it.

I wasn't complaining about ICS. In fact, I really liked it. Especially the additional widgets, and the voice search improvements.
I was just paranoid that something I did in everybody function would cause the super brick bug. While people seem to thinkI they know what triggers it and what doesn't, we just don't know for sure.
So for me, I'm staying on GB until Samsung admits and fixes the emmc bug.
Back to GB for me too.
I agree with the OP, I have gone back to GB.
For me the advantages of ICS do not outweigh the stabilty of GB.
ICS:
I lost 40-50% battery life but I gained Chrome ( a little bit buggy but good nonetheless). I also ran the risk with the EMMC bug.
GB : I get my battery life back again, have to use the standard browser but at least I can't brick my phone.
I use the note quite heavily for the web, notes, email and following tweets. It has become an excellent companion and I really don't want to lose it just for the sake of running the latest OS.
I have enough patience to wait until an "official" patch comes out that can repair the bug. After such times I will go back to trying the various ROMs on the site.
Me too recently on ICS Dxlp9 now back to more safer ROM stock GB 2.3.6 unrooted! loving it! gonna miss the resizble widgets and those new features but its worth to wait LOVE MY NOTE

I'm back to stock UK XEU LA4 rom and all the better for it. The stability of GB definately outweighs the few advantages (that I've experienced anyway) with ICS.
My main issues with stock UK XEU ICS where
1/ Bluetooth connectivity problems with my car Nissan Connect system
2/ Adobe Flash player was unstable & some websites I frequent didn't work properly at all
3/ Screen responsiveness reduced
4/ Battery life was worse
heading back to gb too. Cant find any reason for using ics. and tw is so ugly. Waiting for the official Miui
I tried LPY and didnt like it - battery life awful and unpredictable then reverted back to GB - I think I will keep it this way until a much better ICS is available maybe CM9?
Likewise I've gone back from XXLQ2 to XXLA6. There wasn't enough good new stuff in the Touchwiz version of ICS to outweigh the battery drain and keyboard problems. And I did do a full wipe before flashing.

Main issues people have are:
1) TWizzed ICS is a horrible disappointment compared to an actual ICS experience. Samsung basically reverted half of ICS to a legacy Gingerbread UI.
2) Samsung did a ****-poor job of software quality control with their ICS releases. It's utterly stupid that the launcher force closes if you debloat unrelated apps - but that has been the case since the first I9100 ICS release. (There's a reason most custom firmwares use Apex instead of TWLauncher.)
3) Last but not least - Samsung has had a latent defect in the eMMC chips shipped in nearly all of their Exynos-based handsets up till now, and the kernel developers for the SPH-D710, SGH-I777, SHW-M250S/K/L, and GT-N7000 were stupid enough to enable the trigger condition for a known and documented MMC chip bug. The I9100 kernel development team was smart enough to remove MMC_CAP_ERASE from the MSHCI driver or not enable it in the first place.

In general - if you perform a wipe data/factory reset on any stock ICS kernel, you run a significant chance of permanently trashing your phone's internal storage.
It's a MAJOR bug that Samsung should NEVER have allowed to go out the door.

Recent JB ROMS

In the last couple of days I've had a look at a few different JB ROMs. In fact, at this moment in time I have 4 nandroid backups which are all pretty much fresh installs, except for my most commonly used apps and a couple of small games.
These nandroids are:
1.SLIM BEAN 2.7 with semaphore 2.4.0s
2.HELLY BEAN latest with devil 1.6.1
3.X-BEAN 3.0 with semaphore 2.4.0s
4.TSUNAMI X 2.1 with semaphore 2.4.0s
A couple of months ago there was more noticeable differences with ROMs, but it seems to me that now, performance wise all the bugs are getting ironed out.
IMO any of the above ROMs are worthy of daily use. Slim Bean is my usual, great fast rom, I do wish it was a little prettier though.
Tsunami looks the best visually I think, just little things like colour icons in the settings menus instead of the usual black and white, inverted framework and gapps built in, plus faded wallpaper in app drawer (nova launcher). I know you can do all of that in any ROM yourself bar the coloured menus, but tsunami has all of that built in on install.
Helly Bean was the first JB ROM I used when i upgraded from GB a while ago and I thought it was very good, but in this test it was the only ROM that I had a single problem with, there were a good few times where the screen timed out and switched off as it should but then would not wake up when power button was pressed leaving me no choice but to pull battery and reboot. This was maybe just a problem with my particular installation possibly, maybe a reinstall would have fixed it.
I'm going to spend a few days with each of them again and see how I get on.
I'm not going to benchmark them, I'm not interested in numbers, I'm interested in how they feel to live with.
Things may change if I start filling each one up with apps and data, but performance of each was just the same in terms of UI smoothness.
I shall report back, and go into more detail about functionality differences. Only really first impressions, I've not had the time to go in depth as yet.
But I feel myself being strangely sucked in by tsunami, if its performance holds up as well as slimbean when I start cramming the apps and data on.

One more thing. Everyone should use pimp my ROM v2. I noticed definite improvements in web page loading speed at least. My pages even on fast WiFi used to do this.
When I clicked 'go', the loading bar would fly up to about a centimetre from the end and the page would look completely loaded.
Then it would sit like that for a second or 2 before it would complete, and let me use the page.
Straight after installing PMR, this delay was gone. I know for sure it was PMR that made the difference because I repeated the problem and fixed it another 3 times when I was installing all the other versions of JB to try them out.
Web pages are much snappier. And if PMR fixed this issue for me, then I trust all of its other tweaks are probably doing some good too.

Remember and back up your efs folder!
You can jump straight from GB to JB missing ICS, but you will have to replace your efs folder with the one that you cleverly backed up Because your phone will lose its IMEI. But it takes 2 secs to copy/paste the folder back...
Otherwise you can go GB/ICS/JB, but its unnecessary if you have your efs backed up.
Many JB ROMs are running super slick and look great, so if I were you I'd be throwing that old mouldy loaf of gingerbread out.

Okay. Now I've got problems.
I really like slim bean, and I really like tsunami X.
I feel like keeping them both and swapping over week each lol.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk 2
Hmm what is the main diff between those 2 roms :-?
Performance wise i cant tell the difference, they both run super slick. Only because I'm a flashaholic that I tried out some others apart from some I'd seen before.
I'm just kind of starting to lean towards tsunami because the way it looks, without any modding, the way the menus are all set out seems better (opinion), and its also nice that its just 1 file to install, especially with new 2.5, with gmail 4.2 inverted, inverted framework, and inverted new play store with delete from 'my apps' etc all built in on install. No install CM10 first, no install this file and mount this, then install this and do this etc. 1 file. Wipe phone, choose zip, click and done. Also, I've never once had a problem like when you install gapps and have the device not compatible, or any issue with anything in fact.
I just installed it and it all worked. First time.
I love slim too though. I'm thinking of keeping them both as nandroids so I can flick between them.

Hello,
Well after a long time on carrier stock GB I
took the step and went for CM 9.1 stock first then I flashed Semaphore kernel 1.3.0.
Played around with different settings and, during overclock testing, got in bootloop. Reflashed 9.1 stock then tried again semaphore.
Long story short now I am on CM 10 m2 stock and I love it. Much faster than 9.1 and so far rock solid. Battery time is great.

Glazed Jelly or Paranoid?

Just got my Nexus, won't be using it much until my case/screen protector arrive!
What ROM do you guys recommend, I narrowed it down to a couple.
Glazed Jelly Bean
ParanoidAndroid (I think there was another popular variant of this as well?)
Looking for just silky smooth, stable, long battery life, Improvements in audio quality, picture quality or anything else welcome too.
What do you guys recommend for a launcher as well?
I might consider dual booting Ubuntu on this thing too! Does it work well?
I would recommend keep PA for first week, flash franco r25 kernel and xlouder patch.
Next week flash Glazed with above combo. After that decide for yourself which you like more
I have flashed 6 differenr ROMS, its fun I change it every week.
So dont ask, try it out for yourself all different roms all are good in their own way.
My advice is to combinate 3 roms with 3 kernels
Roms:
Glazed
SmoothRom
PA
Kernels:
Franco
M-kernel
Bricked
There will be 9 combinations. Flash first combination of your choosing, then install all the apps you will use, then batch back them up with titanium backup.. Then everytime you flash another combination, batch recover all the apps to newly flashed rom.. It'll take 30 mins at most to install all from scratch.. I'd advice you try each for at least 2 days (roms and kernels need to settle) then find the one best fits your needs..
Mine is Glazed + Franco R25 (for 2 days)
I tried PA and it didn't do it for me. I dislike tablet UI and there are still traces of it even if you choose not to use tablet UI. Such as in settings, the main page is hard coded to display dual panel view. You can change it so it doesn't show dual panel in sub menus but it doesn't help me and it's done through DPI changes. There are also going to be blue boxes around the home screens when you move between screens. There is no option to change text color on the lock screen. I've read many good things about PA but those minor UI things bother me to the point that I don't want to use it. I'm not a fan of tablet mode on the 7", but that's just me.
Right now I run xenonHD and is working great for me. Does what I want and haven't noticed any bugs. I use it with Franco kernel.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I have to say Ive been looking at the ROMS on offer and having a hard time making a decision which one to pick. Usually I dont have any bother but with this tablet I still cant decide. I guess we are spoilt for choice lol

Thanks for locking my thread and opening this about best ROM for nexus. I will watch this thread and see which is the answer of my question.
STOCK ROM!
Honestly, on my N73G, I am liking stock. I will probably do Parandroid eventually, but the amount of trouble, vs. benefit is too high. (Am not able to make my N7 connect via adb to unlock, etc...but that's not what this thread is for )
Paranoid Android for me.
Re: ** OFFICIAL WHICH IS THE BEST ROM THREAD **
For Nexus 7 3G, I must say that Supernexus 2 is quite good. even though the customization options are lacking compared to CM10.1 for example, it's smooth and so much stable!
I tried temasek unofficial CM10.1 for quite some time before using supernexus rom; I think I have been flashing 1x of his roms, latest one on top previous ones. I only update temasek rom every 3 or so version or when there is an interesting changes. Can't afford to download everyday; slow and expensive Internet here. If only it offers delta update through cyandelta or rom manager. It's got all CM10.1 features plus many cherry picks which are epic IMO, like native USB OTG mounting, wifi / bluetooth/USB tethering. Just to name a few.
I am now waiting for supernexus 2 build 3 which should be released today, one day after its been released for S2 and S3. It's based on 4.2.2. Gonna try that for a few days. If there's any major problem, I might try temasek rom again.
I have a question: is it safe to flash just the bootloader in fastboot even though I'm using a custom rom based on 4.2.1? I don't want to return to stock because I heard it will wipe internal sd again. My N7 can't connect to my desktop computer through MTP; tried in windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04
Sent from Nexus 7 3G using Tapatalk HD
The amount of roms out here is simply confusing.. And please don't accuse me of not doing my homework, I've spent hours reading through rom features and trying them out. None of them have the perfect feeling to me. Also, there is no performance comparision as there is with kernels.
What I'm looking for is as clean rom as possible, more impprtantly though, one that is fast(est) for gaming. Yes, I will use a kernel and oc my device, but roms i've tested still have different performance levels with same kernel settings. Rom should also have tablet ui and some fundametal configuration options such as power menu, quick settings customization etc.. Also, it should be stable enough for everyday use. Battery life is not as important, as it can be saved with app usage and undervolting.
I'm sure others have the same things in mindk, so I'll ask for everyone.
Thank you very much in advance.

I have to agree - stock and unrooted my N7 rocks. Granted, I've only had it a week tomorrow and I'm coming from Hashcode's Kindle Fire rom'ed device - which with most mods is trying to emulate the Nexus 7 - and does a pretty good job too. But my new device got the latest 4.2.2 jelly bean pushed to it a couple of days ago - no fuss/muss - and smooth and awesome it is still.
I'd decided when I activated my new N7 that I'd hold off root and modding it for a week or two to break it in, make sure that I had no warranty claims to make. With one week down all that I've missed about not having root so far is Titanium Backup.
Maybe I'm in the wrong place. Where is the, "Benefits of rooting your Nexus 7?" thread?
Maybe I'm a weirdo here but while stock ROMs are great and fast and whatnot, I'm looking for the most unique ROM! Or maybe I just need a different launcher to spice things up?
But, agreed, there are way too many ROMs that offer minimal differences...

Paranoid Android is by far the best Custom ROM I've tried. Other than ViperX for the HOX etc I think the Paranoid team do such amazing work.
Updated all the time, and never had an issue with PA.
With Faux kernel it "USED" to be amazing all round, but I've noticed recently the battery has been less and less with each update (perhaps Faux isn't keeping up)?
Franco kernel is also brilliant with PA. But yeah, for the Nexus, PA is the way to go !
Re: ** OFFICIAL WHICH IS THE BEST ROM THREAD **
The last time I tried PA, my N7 just freezes in the lock screen, quite often. Only thing I can do is reboot. At other time, when lock screen is working, there are lots of lags pretty much everywhere. I still don't understand why people still praised it until now even though in my testing it feels as if I'm holding a bomb ready to explode at any time.
Even people in the nexus community can't escape the "hype" and placebo effect of roms or tweaks or even kernels.

I love stock and stock kernel on my N7 because it gives me the best battery life plus performance. I can run many applications flawlessly. No hiccups or lags. To be fair, i have only tried MiNCO ROM, paranoidandroid, and CM 10.1. I liked the customizations and the tweaks that were implemented to improve it but it just wasn't for me.
I flashed back to stock a few days and I'm going to camp here for a while.

I'm a pretty big fan of dirty root box IMHO. I think it looks really slick and gives pretty good performance and tons of customization. Paired with Franco kernel it also gets great battery life.
PRIME D02 is the fastest ROM I've tried, by far.
It is a clean ROM concentrated on improving performance, it doesn't add a lot of features which also can be added afterwards to your taste (for instance if you want a PIE menu you can add LMT Launcher). But you can select extended desktop (full screen), you can customize the navbar buttons and settings, nav ring, status bar, and quick settings (swipe down from the top right of the status bar).
If you use this rom with its standard kernel, make sure to install Trickster MOD and adjust the setting 'CPUQuit Power Management' to 'RUNNABLE' (swipe to the last tab, and don't forget to press 'V' on top of the screen to activate, and enable 'set on boot'). This is needed to get good battery performance, otherwise 3 cores will run at high speed. You will still get the super fluid performance.

Isn't anyone using AOKP? I switched from SmoothROM and never looked back. SmoothROM was nice, much better than stock, but the customization and stability with AOKP simply incredible. I'm using a 4.2.2 nightly right now, couldn't wait for the Bluetooth fix and haven't had a problem yet.

Try it out, you don't hate unicorns do you? :cyclops:
Re: ** OFFICIAL WHICH IS THE BEST ROM THREAD **
CodefireX,Xylon,Vanilla Root box,and now Dirty Rootbox have been impressive this year. Originally loved Baked but haven't even looked for an update since v.7.
Don't much care for PA.
Got tired of hearing about tablet ui and the (ugh) 'Phablet' ui and now its Pie this and Pie that. There is a launcher for that so keep pie out of the ROMs please...

Custom ROMs - sharing a beginner's experience

As a long time Android user and general nerd, I often hear from some of my friends about new and cool custom ROMs. It ranges from "amazing customization" to "blazing speed" and even "far better than anything stock in general".
So this weekend I decided that since my warranty is no longer valid anyway, and Samsung won't be updating the Galaxy S2 GT-i9100 anymore, I can go ahead and try something new and shiny, which could help me with my job.
And thus began my research and tests on Android custom ROMs...and oh boy, that was one hell of an experience.
Everything I heard from people about nearly everything was shattered right then and there.
As a reasonable person, I decided to try some of the more popular ROMs, trying to stick as much as possible to stable builds since everyday use is a big deal for me. So now I present to you, my experience with what I was told are the top-dogs of the custom ROM world and my impressions of each:
Omni 4.4.2
This one actually surprised me in terms of it's video driver. As some might know, a bunch of Gameloft published games always show washed out colors on the Galaxy S2, but when used, this ROM showed the correct colors...quite shocking! ...however, it turned out to be highly unstable with apps crashing left and right all the time and often for no real reason. This ROM is not really advertised as "stable" so I guess that was understandable, so I decided to move on.
MIUI v5
This ROM was just impressive. I absolutely love the UI (and I didn't even try the customization stuff, yet I say that!). It seemed really stable and I almost decided to stick with it...until I found out that 3 apps in particular I very much rely on don't work properly or at all (overlay issues it seems). This got me really disappointed but I figured functionality is more important than looks so once again, I decided to move on.
CyanogenMod 10.3.1
This might be the biggest disappointment for all the wrong reasons. The buildup and hype I got from people about it created in my head "the ultimate ROM"...but after installing it and doing some tests...I have to say, the performance difference was just barely noticeable and i all honesty, not worth the trade for the bugs it also brings (although if it had the video driver from Omni I would've changed my mind). I really wanted to do a fair judgement since I know this is the top-dog of ROMs (or at least in popularity) so I even ran tests on it...and in games, the framerate difference between stock and CM10.3 was just 2-5fps.
Resurrection Remix 4.0.7
This was...let me just say it out loud - the installation for this ROM should be a standard - just incorporate some stuff and have people chose what to get or don't get. Having stock stuff and then 10 additional flashable ZIPs while not really a big issue is just a time-waster for a lot of people in my eyes (although it would've been nice to know more about the modems when it asks you for a choice). Anyway, this ROM's keyboard just refused to work so I got rid of it after 2 flashes.
ReVolt JB 4.5
...keyboard didn't work on this one again, and after another 2 flash attempts, I scrapped it aswell.
At this point I pretty much just gave up and went back to the Samsung stock ROM for my region and was left with an empty feeling that custom ROMs all seem to have at least one or more huge flaws.
All the buildup and "legends" (lacking a better term) weren't even close to what I experienced (except the MIUI...well, UI) and it got me thinking...are custom ROMs meant for everyday users or they were always aimed at people willing to experiment? Personally, I decided that my journey through the custom ROM world has ended here at least for the time being (maybe someday I'll go back to MIUI but who knows), but I wanted to ask, does anyone feel the same way I do? That custom ROMs, while a really cool thing to be able to have is getting overhyped to the point where unless you really know what you're getting into will lead to just disappointment?
I would really like to hear other people's views on this, especially if you're not an expert user.
NeatROM rulez, give it a try.

Resurrection Remix 4.0.7 worked fine for me. the only problem is the System UI that usually crashes when you messed up on something and it really need some reboot for that. ☺

Well, with custom roms comes both bugs and extended capacities.
First of all, having a rooted phone gives a lot of new possibilities.
Besides, custom roms give new content, like the latest android updates, which the constructors take time to port to their devices.
At last but not least, custom ROMs often let you.. customize as much as thou wish
I'm personally using Cyanfox (android 4.4), and I'm pretty happy about it

I actually just root my stock ROM with the SuperSU flashable ZIP-thingie...though I only need it for a firewall ^-^;;
But to me one of the biggest deal-breakers is how all the ROMs I did like don't support MHL (if only MIUI was capable of that )
Since the warranty is gone i'm trying a bunch of roms to sede what nave to offer. So far i've only tried the omnirom and it's pretty good to me, except some minor bugs.
In my opinion you've to choose a stabile ROM if you don't want any problems
im using cm10.1 stable linaro build most nearly perfect rom for me.

That's kind'a the thing, CM 10.3.1 is the one shown as stable and it seems to be...but it's missing features that the stock ROMs offer, and the performance difference is pretty much not noticeable enough to justify it for me.
All the ROMs except Omni were shown as "stable" but as i mentioned in my first post, all seem to have at least 1 big issue.
As a side question...I heard the newest version of MIUI actually had MHL/TV-out support on the S2...anyone know if that's true?
Dorimanx anybody ... ?
I only use my phone for basic stuff. So I just use a stock rom with a custom kernel. That way, everything works and I dont have to read 2000 posts to see what problems to expect.
Stock CM kernel isn't all that great IMO , Try coupling Dorimanx's kernel with CM or any other ROM... Adds a lot of power features with stability. stock Sammy Roms feel very caged and unoptimized thus the need for custom builds. Give it time... It grows on you eventually.
Just my 2cents

After 2 years of trying to find a custom ROM that doesn't have one show-topping bug, I feel bad for not just staying with a nicely optimized stock ROM with a tweaked kernel that is 100% dependable when I need it.
So, +1 :good:
Well, I only recently got the S2. Before my S2, I've owned an HTC One V. The stock ROM on that thing was just a mess. It came with 4.0.4 ICS and... you guessed it... no update to JB. So I installed a custom ROM on that one... it improved nearly everything.
So, from my experiences with that device, I thought I could flash the S2 and get the same experience. And... well, not really. I have tried so many ROMs...
The AOSP based ROMs either drain battery like hell or have any other bug which is so impacting that I can't deal with it. For example, the Audio 50% bug. Just one word: Annoying.
SO, I could stay with a Samsung stock ROM, but well, that won't be an option for me. Why not? Simple, on the stock rom, using my phone for an hour, literally ONE HOUR, the thing is completely dead. Battery empty. The only stock rom which gives me two and half an hour of screen on time is the 2.3.3 GB stock. And well, that's a bit old nowadays.
The by far best combination for power, speed, stability and battery life for me is CM10.1 stable with the DorimanX 9.14 kernel. I've tried it once and I find myself going back to it pretty much everytime I flashed any ROM I do not like.
Currently I'm on CM11 unofficial nightly, tomorrow I will see for how long my battery can last. I know, my battery is probably broken, but it's not thicker than normal or something like that. It just drains and I have no idea why.

I get up to 14 days with my battery if it's just on Standby [no actual use] and up to a full day if I play some games on it with the Stock ROM.
Also I wanted to mention that I tried DorimanX 8.43 earlier today and my god, my phone became unstable as hell [still on a stock ROM]...odd.
But yeah, you might want to get a new battery if you get less than 16 hours battery life
Hello. I want share my experience. I moved from stock because i want try 4.2 new features, specially widget on lockscreen.
I first tryied cm 10.2 but battery drained quickly and gaming was so sloooow.I tryied then cm10.2 linaro but experienced 4-5 reboot a day. Now I'm back on cm10.2 hoping that the guy working on exynos drivers will bring good news. In the meanwhile I will try gustavo or apolo kernel that seems the most stable kernels

Waiting S4 UI port into i9100G ...
I have found only 2-3 Roms that can be used
I can say that i have installed allmost all posible ROMs. For me every rom whit verson of android above 4.1.2 just didn't work ( i have SD CARD problems in most of the ROM's in other i have encored camera problems or bootloops ) The only ROM working realy good is snapdragon and s4fors2 .
IF ANY ONE KHNOWS HOW TO SOLVE MY SD-CARD PROBLEMS ON ANY ROM WITH ANDROID VERSION ABOVE 4.1.2 PM me PLS
CyanFox Rom is the most stable and worked for me as well. Give it a try!!
For Battery Backup, maybe you can use Voltage Control Pro App, Underclock to 1 GHZ if you are not a hardcore gamer. You can also decrease voltage, more Options over mv are also available in Pro Version, Decreasing Voltage will help lower power consumption of CPU.
You can also install Siyah Latest Kernel and do all of this using S-Tweaks!
Thanks!
@hellco what exactly is your sd card problem?? Can you elaborate??
