Nexus 10 otg with mass storage working? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm sitting here with my nexus 4 disappointed that otg is NOT working even though it is advertised and in the guide book it says it is a feature... Was also thinking about picking up a nexus 10.
Can anyone confirm otg working without needing root for the N10? On the phone it isn't a huge deal-breaker, but on the tablet it would absolutely be a must for me. Thanks!

With nexus media importer, without root, it works, but only read permissions, you can't write. Btw, some people got an otg cable and say they can't get it to work, but that's because of the cable.

Damn only read? I guess that's fine for videos, write would be nice for my emulators though

HAve you got an OTG cable?
If you root your device you can get write, but as said read should work fine.

Yeah I have a cable. It's confirmed to work with my dad's SGS3 and my sisters SGS2

Root on nexus 10 is as easy as double click an icon and it auto-roots (with superboot). You don't even need to unlock the bootloader, so you might want to do that.

alrighty I'll probably pick up a 16gig version then since I wont have to carry videos around on the device itself. Now just to decide if i truly wanna shell out 400 bucks haha

I think you are mistaken there ...
From the superboot thread ..
Note: If you are using a retail device, you may need to unlock the bootloader first, using './fastboot-windows oem unlock' (or the appropriate version for your machine, included in this zip). Note that the OEM unlock sequence wipes your device, so consider doing an 'adb backup' beforehand if required!

Just don't want someone wiping their device without knowing it ..

Anyone know which OTG cable works with both the nexus 10 and the HTC EVO LTE phone? I would like to be able to read and write to my 16 gb memory stick. Both of my devices are rooted..
Thanks...

[Q] Is a micro USB memory stick available/ possible

There are several same memory sticks of high capacity that would fit nicely jsut under the nexus and provide much needed extra memory. wonder if such a thing is available or indeed possible?
You can use an OTG USB Adapter, device must mehr rooted, and use the tool"stick mount:
If device is unrooted You can use the "nexus Media importer" from market.
Cheers

Yes thanks I understand that but a memory stick with an micro interface wouldn't need the cable. know they don't exist but wondered if any technical issue that would rule them out.
I think, there might be a problem to harm your connector port if the USB stick isn t quite small, a flexible cable is the better choice in my opinion...
But your idea is interresting..

I thought this was interesting too. Until I realised you'd need an adaptor to plug it into a computer. So no real benefit ...LOL

I bought a 64GB Kingston usb drive and use 'Nexus Media Importer", works great with HD films and music etc. It's a shame it can't be used as an SD card enabling installation of apps etc to it. Oh well, maybe in the future or I finally root my Nexus 7.

[Q] OTG cable, stick mount, nexus media importer

Can any of the lucky ones who received their nexus try using an otg cable ? Does the phone sense the pendrive or it needs the help of some secondary app such as stickmount, nexus media importer ...
Edit 1: It's not working! External power required though.
Haven't received the nex yet lol
It's not working for anyone at the moment I believe, 4.2 is broken the compability, Chainfire says there's hacks around it but not for a week or two.
Oh ok!

Lots of people have tried; no one has reported success. Take the comment about "hacks around it" with a large grain of salt; there are pretty strong indications, although not quite conclusive yet, I don't think, that the hardware just doesn't support USB host mode (the connector doesn't appear to supply the voltage needed to run a peripheral device).
Maybe if people star it, it'll show Google that people expected/wanted it, and hopefully if it's a software issue, then it'll get fixed faster.

I dont think its a hardware issue. The HTC One X with Sense 4.1 and ICS did not support the OTG cable. After the update to Sense 4+ and JB, One X has started supporting the OTG cable, pendrives upto 32 GB work like a charm. Its most probably a software issue
on the other hand, LG smartphones has never supported usb otg...
at least, none of their optimus line up hasn't yet
the problem may be on LG's fault
anyway, there is already a huge thread about this issue on this forum

USB OTG and Nexus 7

Am I correct in saying that OTG cables will not work with an unrooted device? I've google'd around a bit and that is the conclusion I've come up with. Please someone prove me wrong and tell me how to get it to work without rooting.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I think it is a mixed bag depending on the type of device. For instance, I don't know why a standard USB keyboard wouldn't work with a stock, unrooted tablet. Hard drive or USB key, though? Perhaps not without root.
The USB Media Importer app claims that it doesn't need root (but then I also see some ymmv comments about Nexus 7 and 4.2.2 there). I haven't used this app so I can't say one way or another. Maybe someone that has can add some commentary.
For storage I think otg access to read is available without root with a few 3rd party apps but to write to them I think you need to give them root access.
Other usb devices would depend on if drivers are in the rom/kernel.If it says it works with linux it usually works for android devices.

I too have the same problem. Thinking it has something to do with the latest update

accessing files with cracked screen

A few weeks ago I rooted my ATT 800o phone, and even attempted to install TWRP. It gave me a compatibility error with 800o so forgot about TWRP. A week ago, the phone fell and the screen cracked, rendering the phone useless. It works perfectly fine, but I cannot enter the pin code since the digitazer is probably broken.
I tried LG PC suite and LG OPS or OTS (I forgot), and it doesnt see any USB device connected. I believe I left the phone in JUST CHARGE USB mode.
I need to access some files on the internal SD card, so I ask for suggestions on what to try next.
Assuming I can get it in download mode, which I should be able to, should I flash the stock LG firmware (800d) and then try to get into it that way? Will that wipe the files of the sd card (pics, application data, etc)?

I had the same problem, but I manage to use LG on screen app. But never mind, I sent my phone to LG, of course I paid for broken screen (now I have ballistics case, I hope it will be enough for future impacts), But I include a note with the phone and wrote that LG will only replace screen but not delete any data or reinstall soft, and they did I revived my phone in the same state as I send them, but screen was new of course

an OTG cable is a USB cable witch plugs in your phone but has a female end on it to allow you use things like a keyboard mouse USB drive controller etc.

@ clapper66, I don't understand how otg cable can help in his case.
@ OP, if you're in luck which OnScreen Phone feature has been ON as well as wireless, you then can use OSP with wireless mode.
Other than that, I don't know any way to mimic your phone on another display.
Worst case, send out to repair.

His screen is not broken the digitizer is cracked so the screen works but does not recognize touch. So of he uses an otg cable with a mouse then he can go under setting then go to PC connection then select MTP mode so that when he connects a USB Cale that's plugged into his PC it will show all the internal storage of his phone and get all his files off that he needs.

Where might I casually find an otg cable?
I will probably sell the phone as is, so i'd like to avoid spending to fix it.

Well I know you can buy them online that's where I got mine, but I would check at some electronics store like RadioShack or bestbuy and maybe wall mart I think there like $5 to $10 or even go to your carrier. I ordered one of amazon for like $2 but it took like 2 weeks to arrive because it came from China.

Thank you for the idea of the cable, but I want to try something first. I want to flash it clean so as to remove the exchange pin and hopefully get into it that way. I want to possibly sell the phone, so I have to wipe it anyway. If I don't recover the files, not a big deal (i hope...).
My thinking is...flash it back to stock clean, and see if I can change the USB connection parameters enough to connect. Then I can recover my files, and then maybe I can sell it. It is presently rooted without recovery. How do I flash it back to stock?
