This tablet was bought from a online warehouse as a returned item. Just for kicks I powered up using the power and - volume. There is Four icons "RCK, Android, USB, and Wipe Data. I have up graded to the JB OTA and I know it had been reset before I got it. Now if I am right has someone tried to root this tablet? I base that on the RCK icon which when selected just shows the android on his face with a red exclamation.
There is no text showing that the boot loader has been unlocked. So where do I go from here to unlock and root ?
That's the normal ASUS JB bootloader, if there isn't any text when turning the tablet on saying: "Device unlocked" it isn't. So if you want to unlock download the unlocking tool apk from ASUS website, install and run on your tablet. After unlocking just check the development section of the forums and get informed on how to install recovery (CWM or TWRP), root and custom ROMs.
Thanks

Thanks for the quick reply. I would of been surprised if it had of been rooted and Amazon.com's techs hadn't of caught it when it was returned.
Going to hold off rooting it until the warrantee is gone. Still having nightmares about my Viewsonic gTablet turning into a cyborg tablet thingy and attacking me. All because I just had to try every ROM I could cram down it.
Although unlikely, it could still be rooted if it was done prior to the jb update, and it could still be locked even if rooted. Download root checker from the market and you can safely test this.

Has any one so far managed to unlock the bootloader and root the retail version of the tab. I'm asking cuz a friend is looking to get the retail version but won't get it unless its unlockable and root -able. Does pressing the vol down and power take you to recovery?
I know the io version has been rooted.

I am able to get into Recovery fine. Unfortunately there is no mounted sdcard, so although I can push with ADB, I cannot actually load the zip.
Just mount the file create the directory and place files there
Mount the ZIP?
Could someone please post exact instructions how to apply these zip files? As previously noted, we do not have access to the sdcard when booting into recovery. Thanks!
Yes please tell us how to mount /sdcard/
I have the retail version from Best Buy and /sdcard is not mounted. I tried to mount it but I don't seem to be able to. Also when I try to run fastboot devices it comes up blank but adb devices returns:
D:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb devices
* daemon not running. starting it now *
* daemon started successfully *
List of devices attached
37C7046403FF217 device
I also tried in Ubuntu and same result... adb communication working, but fastboot executable can't see the device and I don't know how to get the /sdcard mounted using adb.
*** Please help ***
Please check the development forum. I bought mine from BestBuy on Friday, 16G metallic one. It is rooted.
The basic steps are to use nvflash to replace the stock bootloader with one that was from Googles IO tabs, then installing CWM, then rooting. Took me about 20 minutes.

The above links worked for me. I have a 16GB Tab purchased from Best Buy.
On initial bootup I had the unlocked icon on the boot screen so I don't know if the same method works for tabs without the unlocked icon.
But here is something very important. The Samsung USB drivers for PCs are a mess. There are so many versions for different devices (I have had 7 other Samsung devices that all connect to my PC via USB) After having constant connection problems I realized that the simple solution was to go to a "clean" PC (one that had never had Samsung USB drivers installed) and install nvflash per the instructions. Without the legacy Samsung USB drivers the nvflash method worked flawlessly.
Hello
Is there any chance of unlocking the locked bootloader for the SGT ??
guys I dont think I have seen any recent posts by anyone claiming theirs is locked. I have a locked white 16gb that I had got at the launch on the 8th but I am pretty sure most if not all of the tabs are unlocked at stores.
If someone can show a post indicating the user got it sometime between the 17th and now and it being locked, please indicate so
Some still locked...
Had a launch unit that was locked. Returned it for the metallic one on the 20th and wound up with another locked one.
Rooted using the above linked instructions though, worked like a charm.

So basically whether you get a locked or unlocked bootloader is a free for all?
What gives Samsung...
Could they potentially release an update unlocking the bootloader for everyone?

From what I've been hearing you're just lucky. There are some that are unlocked but the majority are locked. I doubt Samsung will be releasing anything to help but, I'd keep up in the forums, someone smarter than us will fix the issue for them!
Retail Roulette?
So, I've been kind of interested in this and, since I work at Best Buy's Geek Squad I've got a chance to check out the SGT's that get returned. It really does seem kind of random. I've seen 3 so far, 2 16GB's and 1 32GB returned since launch. The 32GB was unlocked as was one of the 16's. So, I don't know what the deal is... perhaps poor QC at Samsung manufacturing? Got me, LoL!
I rooted using Mskip's rootkit. I updated with the OTA update thinking I could use the kit to root again. I'm on the latest version of the toolkit after donating and updating it. I go to option 4(root options) then I choose option 1(root). I do this while in fastboot mode. The Nexus 10 reboots, goes to the home screen, and the toolkit says it is "Waiting for Device" Nothing happens. I tried rebooting into fastboot mode again, but nothing. I ran root checker, and it says I do not have root.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong.

First off, do you have "USB Debugging" checked in settings? Sounds like ADB isn't working. (Especially since you were already in fastboot mode, which doesn't require debugging.
See THIS thread.
If you have a custom recovery installed, download the superSU app and Su binaries from Chainfire's thread I just linked and flash them in recovery.
If you don't have a custom recovery, use the toolkit to either temp flash or fully flash the right recovery onto your tablet.
Also, if I remember correctly, options 3 & 4 in the toolkit's root menu will essentially do this for you.
NOTE: For future OTA updates, download "OTA Rootkeeper" or "SuperSU Pro" from the market. They both have options to protect root during an OTA update. (SuperSU Pro has never failed me when I used it to protect root when I had my Asus TF700.

Thanks for the answer. I'm not a total newb to rooting things, but defintely not a pro, so some of this goes beyond what I've done before. I'll have to approach slowly. I don't really need root for anything right now, I only rooted to connect BT controllers to the Nexus, and those apps are broken right now anyway.
I do have usb debugging checked. I'm not sure about the other things you asked. I've never flashed anything to my droid devices, so I'll try and go through that thread and see what makes sense.
Thanks!
Well, I tried to run that program from the link, and it said some files were missing, so I stopped it. I tried to flash clockwork mod recovery and when it booted back into Android to rename the files, it got stuck on waiting on ADB. Frustrating.

Yeah, it seems more intimidating than it really is. Luckily, all of the things I listed in my above post are all achievable through the Nexus 10 Toolkit that you have downloaded.
I agree though, take it slow and read through the instructions, that is the best way to avoid breaking something. Rooting is a pretty safe procedure these days, my first Android phone was quite the headache.
When you do decide to root again, you can use the toolkit to either:
-- Install root through ADB (no recovery needed) like you already tried. Beforehand, you should check to make sure you correctly installed the correct drivers. You also need to check the toolkit's "List of attached devices" section to see if you see your device (represented by a string of letters & numbers) whenever your device boots back to the homescreen.
--Or temporarily install the necessary recovery to flash a root package, once it is flashed the device will revert to the stock recovery. (When you see "CWM" the toolkit is referring to a custom recovery BTW.)

I think the problem coming in for me was not understanding ADB and fastboot. I have the drivers installed, but it wasn't seeing it. I switched to PTP mode and instantly it was being seen in ADB mode by the toolkit. I then ran option 4-->Option 1(Root Device) from fastboot mode. This time when it booted back to the homescreen the toolkit was able to continue with the root and I am now rooted again.
Thanks for taking the time to respond to this and help me out. You mention of the drives is what kind of kicked me in the right direction.

Which root method did you use? The only one I've looked at requires unlock to root. Ive rooted every phone ive owned and they are super easy, they never do a factory reset/unlock to root. BTW I'm on 4.2.1 and i gave up when the toolkit i used wouldnt connect to fastboot.

I did have to unlock the bootloader so I did lose everything, but it wasn't that hard and I did it early enough that I didn't lose too much of what I had on there.
so i don't post on this site ever, and i know next to nothing about rooting a phone aside from what i read
i just hit it up this for info on rooting my atrix i aquired... long story short i found a beta program called rescue root that works
i just rooted my bell atrix 4g, gingerbread 2.3.6, build 4.5.2a-51_oll-17.8
all i did was install motorola device manager program from the moto site, installed rescue root, connected my device and ran the program and rooted in under 10 mins, confirmed by root checker app, titainium backup and other various app requiring superuser permission
also i did not have to unlock the boot loader before i ran the program

u still have to unlock to flash custom roms. so it dosent really matter
rev.
you have to unlock the bootloader to flash roms? i must have misunderstood what i read...
i thought you had to unlock the bootloader first in order to root... not root in order to unlock the boot loader, guess i'll hit up moto's website again as theres a unlock your boot loader option there
but either way, just thought i'd share a new quick root method with the world that caters to those less technically gifted like me
i guess they only just released this beta and turns out the developer is actually just across town from me which is kinda cool
forgive the newbish excitment i only just snagged this phone off ebay since i bricked my old android by deleting things i shouldn't have without backing up first

I think you have it all completely mixed up.
You have to unlock the bootloader to be able to flash custom ROMs. Rooting is completely separate and has nothing to do with anything else - you don't need to unlock anything to root, and rooting won't help you get anything else (unlocking, flashing) done. It is literally completely separate.
It would probably help you to do more reading on the subject. Getting informed and educated can only ever be a good thing.
I am creating this thread because I feel that people are unaware that you can still root the Droid RAZR HD with the latest software.
It's actually very simple.
Step 1 - Download the Droid RAZR HD Utility - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2307439
Step 2 - Boot into AP Fastboot (Power off phone, then hold the power button and volume up & down buttons - all 3 buttons simultaneously - scroll down to AP Fastboot then press the volume up key when AP Fastboot is highlighted to select it and boot into AP Fastboot)
Step 3 - Follow the instructions for the Droid RAZR HD Utility. Chose option 1. Your phone will be restored to 4.1.2 with the exploitable motochopper root.
Step 4 - Root with motochopper. I personally used the .zip not included with the Droid RAZR HD Utility - once you're on the exploitable version of 4.1.2 using the separate .zip or the Droid RAZR HD Utility to root shouldn't make a difference. Make sure you have the latest Motorola drivers and that you have USB debugging enabled before attempting to root.
Step 5- Download Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the Android Market. Use the protect root and then the temporarily unroot options.
Step 6 - Install the OTA update
Step 7 - Open Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper and restore root. You should now be successfully rooted with the latest software.
***This worked flawlessly for me, however on the Droid RAZR HD Utility thread it says not to use it with the latest OTA update. I used it with the latest OTA update and ran into no problems. Use at your own risk.***
If you feel that I have left anything out or care to share your experience please reply.

Maybe I am asking a dumb question, but does this method allow you to unlock the bootloader?
I am on version 9.18.79.XT926 and was wondering if this method would work for me. Were you on the same version or a different one?
Rooting and unlocking are two separate processes. If you're on 9.18.79, you currently can't unlock. Temporarily downgrading the software version doesn't change that. Sorry.

For real? I've been doing a lot of reading a missing around trying to figure out if it's possible for me to install roms. This is the first place in actually found where it is no.
So at the end of the day if you're on the latest ota and I've got root going but I can't get a recovery installed. Is that the limitation or what's considered normal?

You can use SafeStrap to flash SafeStrap compatible ROMs and make backups. SafeStrap is based off of TWRP but it doesn't actually replace your stock recovery (since you have a locked bootloader).
Sounds like good news.
It looks like I have the phone itself actually rooted using motochopper however I'm not able to get safe strap 100% working. Installs and then it says that installed the recovery however when you try to reboot into recovery it doesn't prompt you with the menu.
What's interesting to me is that I can use other programs that require root access far as I can tell with no issue, root checker shows root is available as well. Trying to reboot into recovery though does not give me the safety strap splash screen to choose any kind of recovery option. Just rolls into DROID...

To get into SS, you just need to boot normally. SS doesn't replace the stock recovery, so if you try to boot into recovery, you'll just get the stock menu. If you boot normally, then you should get the options to go into recovery or boot normally. If you don't get the two buttons at the bottom of the screen, then I would try removing and re-installing SS.
Thanks

"writing 'system'" a ways down the page, it started out working fine, but now is hanging on this and has been for about 20 mins, is this normal?
That's not normal, there is an updated utility in the development forum version 1.3+ there are also links to the new root method in that post if your bootloader is locked.
If your bootloader is not locked the utility and root in this thread should be working.

Brilliant i just got a MAXX HD imported from the US ran the update yesterday and now i'm just finding out that as a result of the update i can no longer unlock the bootloader which puts a stop to my plans of being on android 4.3. Is there really no other way ? Maybe theres a chance my bootloader was already unlocked - how would i check ?
There is no way to unlock anymore. If you were planning on going custom why even take the other? This is why people have to check before getting willy nilly with random ota's that don't do anything other then lock your phone generally. To check bootloader status boot into fastboot it'll either say locked or unlocked.

I installed the update thinking it would be a better comparison for when i did go custom but never in a million years imagined it would lock anything. They really should include a disclaimer with these updates. I've been using android devices for years and have never encountered anything like this update - they've always been irreversible from my experience.
I've seen miracles performed on android though so this cant be the end. It just cant be !

Easy for you to say.
I don't know what the point of locking your bootloader would be - especially if you don't have a working ROM on the tablet (stock or otherwise).
If you are trying to go back to stock and never root again, well then: unlock your bootloader, get stock running on your tablet FIRST and only then lock the bootloader after everything else is working.
So, for the moment, unlock the bootloader and get a ROM installed. You can use a toolkit if you want, but using fastboot manually will avoid the "hiding" of any error messages. There are a TON of threads in here on how to do that.
And if you want any kind of decent help, don't use the phrase "it didn't work". That's totally ambiguous - it sort of implies that there is only one possible reason why something went wrong on your tablet, and we all know exactly what that one thing is. Not even close; there are hundreds of things that could have gone wrong.
A far better approach is to detail exactly what you were attempting, and then cut and paste any error messages you observed into your post here on XDA.
