I have my N7 for a week now. I really want to root ant take full control of my tablet. I just don't want to void my warranty just now, just in case any defects would appear.
You wont void your warranty. If your confident enough to root it then you should be confident enough to restore it to stock if it ever needs to be returned. Not to mention that if you wait then decide to unlock the bootloader then you will be spending more time putting everything back on it.

I have no problems with boot unlocking and rooting, done it numerous times for friends and @ work. I just don't want end up having screenlift or sth and warranty would refuse just cause unlocked bootloader.

a got a replacement nexus 7 two weeks ago, my old seven stopped charging. i sent it back to google with an unlocked bootloader, twrp recovery, rasbean jelly rom, and the trinity kernel. the only thing is they forgot to thank me
if there is a hardware related problem, having an unlocked bootloader and rooted shouldnt be an issue.
Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V4.0.0
found out that Google Nexus 7 TOOLKIT V4.0.0 can relock the bootloader.

"Re-lock" not "Lock"
So its no better than having it un-locked.
But yeah, if its hardware issue they cannot refuse a fix.
Software issues on the other hand, they will blame on custom ROM's etc.
But thats fair?

In searching through the Development threads about rooting, I didn't really see a concise answer to this.
If I root using a method from Development - say SuperRoot from paulobrien, can I unroot back to stock say for warranty purposes? I'm all for rooting and trying the ROMs already out for us (thank you to those that have gotten this ball rolling fast already!!), but I've seen some low build quality issues from friends and want the ability to return this if necessary.
Google already has the factory images posted. Been up for a while. Flash em and relock bootloader
Download the stock Nexus 7 image and go into the recovery mode on your Nexus 7. Then extract the stock image file and the scripts inside the same archive. Use these scripts to restore back to stock, and use fastboot oem lock to lock it up when you're done.
Now it'll be exactly as it was from Google.
Even if you return to root, google can still detect that the device has been rooted.

Hello, my girlfriends new Nexus 7 for some reason wont update to 4.2, its stuck on 4.1.2. So whats the best way to root it on 4.1.2? And afterwards, its possible to flash 4.2 on it, correct? Ive rooted a couple of different phones and customized them, but I want to make 100% sure I dont screw up her second love lol. Thanks for the help!:cyclops:
What is 4.3?

sorry, meant 4.2 LOL
Try Wug's Nexus Root Toolkit. It does a great job and walks you through each step.
thats the one I was looking at! I wasnt sure if I should use that one, or the other Toolkit, but the other one seemed a little more confusing. Thanks!
Wugfresh worked great for me this weekend.
The only unexpected headache was having to deal with device driver issues since I was rooting the n7 on a laptop that I used to root my Galaxy tab a year ago. There were 6-7 Samsung drivers that I had to remove and then reboot the laptop.
Still an easy process but the driver situation made the process take longer than expected (maybe an hour total).
Still, a lot faster and more newb friendly than rooting in 2009

Toolkits are fail. Learn to use adb and fastboot. That way you can be sure of exactly what your doing to your phone and fix it if necessary. It may sound daunting at first but in the long run it's much better.

Completely agree with this...
-----------
Hi, zidane1341...
Rooting is really simple.
(You will need an unlocked bootloader for this).
Get a custom recovery .img for your device...
Either CWM - http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
...or TWRP - http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103
...it matters little which.
-----------
fastboot flash it.
-----------
Get Chainfires SU .zip package here http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip
Flash it using the custom recovery you've just fastboot flashed...
Reboot... and you're rooted.
-----------
Having said all that though, I don't see how root will facilitate an upgrade of your girlfriends N7 from 4.1.2 to 4.2...
For that you will need the factory stock image for your device, available here http://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images.
There is a thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796, that details how to flash factory stock images.
-----------
On a final note... it's kind of puzzling why your girlfriends N7 isn't being automatically upgraded to 4.2.
When I flash back to stock, (as I do, from time to time), I use JOP40C (4.2) and as soon as I get a WiFi connection, I get 'nagged' about upgrading to JOP40D (4.2.1), which I always allow. And it does so without problems.
If your girlfriends N7 is running (even at the slightest level) a modified version of JellyBean, then the automated update procedure from Google's servers will fail.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Well I know from personal experience, after I rooted my optimus I could upgrade to a newer version of android, I can just flash 4.2 after rooting correct? I called Asus and they said to send it in, but they didn't know what was wrong. My girlfriend is pretty mad about that, so I was thinking I could bypass that by doing it myself.
Hi, im in need to send my nexus 4 back, ive restored, unrooted, and flashed stock, and locked the bootloader, is there any steps i should take before sending back? many thanks

You can't stop them, they will check everything you have googled (assuming you signed into google) and if there is lots of thing such as "how to root nexus 4" or "good ROMs for nexus 4" or "root toolkit" then Google will get suspicious and check to see what apps you have installed from the playstore and if they find ones that require root they will know you have rooted. . Nah I'm just kidding you're ready to send it in

I'm sure they know and just don't care.
I wouldn't recommend it, but I've heard of people who sent their phone back to Google with a custom ROM on it and still got it replaced for a hardware defect.
every device that ive ever sent back to google for a hardware issue replacement has had a custom recovery, root, and a custom rom/kernel. and have recieved the replacements without any issue.
So just come across the cyanogeninstaller and notice no one is talking about it here.
The program will walk you through how to unlock the boot loader, gain root, install a recovery and install the latest cyanogen mod. All in a nice little ui.

According to the faq the HTC one is supported too!

There's an article on xda's front page today
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/cyanogenmod-installer-now-available-in-the-play-store/
The one thing I wish it didn't do was wipe SD. I was going to test it out but that's a deal breaker for me. I don't want to sit around and wait for those transfers.
does it use htcdev to unlock or an exploit?
I ran this and it did what it said. Only problem I had is after it unlocked my bootloader installation failed and I had to run again and it installed cwm and then installed CyanogenMod 10.2 snapshot. I am curious of what they use to unlock bootloader as well. During the process it said waiting on unlock code then I was prompted on phone to unlock yes or no.

So once this is done are you free to flash any custom Rom because this seems like an easy way to root and unlock boot loader . Also does this offer a way of relocking boot loader.

It'd be great if it could also s-off our the device I've tried every method and no luck
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
So, did anyone try this tool? Any feedback?
I can't findout the unlock method either.
Is there no one the knows how it is done?
I can't imagine the installer unlocking via htcdev, how many phonez can you unlock on one account?
And don't you think HTC would found out and block the installer unlocker?
Iam thinking of going for this once my warranty is up but not until.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I am possibly interested in this if safe, though probably not to stay on CM.
Only Im afraid of the 'Wipe SD' part. On my previous One I wiped SD when flashing a custom ROM and it killed the phone, was unfixable.
I am not going to destroy another phone, love the One as it is and not worth trying if not a safe option..

Well, my warranty expires in two years. I won't even have this phone in two years. I'm waiting to complete 5 complete battery cycles and going for it :silly:
works well
So I've now got my second One back (wife got a S800 S4) so used the CM unlocking tool.
Ran perfectly except for one small glitch, it did not recognise the phone momentarily until a reboot of PC and new USB cable was used.
Now have a rooted One on CM11 and I actually like it on the handset.
There is more free ram, is smoother than Sense, not one single FC, everything works, using ART and that has not been an issue. It feels faster though have limited CPU to 1.5ghz.
Only issue with the mobile is the camera module, the purple crap. My main One is unaffected and in perfect stock condition and will stay that way. My second can be for the custom ROMs, only that I feel I'll probably use it more lol than the stock, want to get Miui on to it.
Was such as safe and easy process one day will be used on the stock One.
Would recommend this tool for unlocking as saves all the unnecessary work by using normal means, only issue is you can't back up the stock ROM as gets wiped..
Hey guys, my Nexus 6P got the BLOD 2 months ago so i sent it into warranty. They sent me back a new one a few days back. First thing i did is I enabled OEM unlocking and USB debugging. Is that enough to save my 6P in case I get a bootloop again? Should i unlock bootloader and install custom recovery? Stock oreo is working pretty good, any of you guys recommending any custom roms?
I would think that no mater how talented are the mods in here, who came up with a solution for a crippled 6P, in a case of a BLOD I would simply get it fixed if I can get Huawei to do it or simply get a new device.
having a crippled 6p with only four cores active , little cluster, that's not a real smartphone.
But as a whole, yes, unlocking your bootloader is what you need to use that mod.

I don't know about the 6P boot loop causes (they are not so popular like the 5X with this problem). Just in case I recommend you to do this.
In the 5X, 90% of the bootloops happen in less than 2 weeks after a mayor OTA update (like from M to N or N to O).
So what I do is to put the phone in the fridge for 5 minutes, once is cold I press the update button and let it update inside the fridge. This way the phone remains COLD during the update process, and one of the 5X chipset doesn't get unsoldered. Note that It shouldn't be more than 10 minutes inside the fridge.

Stock ROM, unlocked bootloader, USB debugging enabled, TWRP recovery, rooted, custom kernel. Nothing you can really do to prepare for a defective motherboard.
