I have updated and installed CM 10 with TWRP and JB gapps but my Nook will not charge when powered on. I previously had CM 10 just on the SD card running it from there and thought if I put it directly to the EMMC it would fix it but no luck. Any Ideas?

Are you using the stock BN charger and cable? If so does the n light up when plugged in?

What CM10 version did you install? It seems the charging signal vbus is not turning on when your Nook is on or in sleep mode. Another app may be interfering with the charging function.
same exact issue I am having. I've tried many CM10 builds, paranoid android which I know is CM10 based, but it wont charge with the stock charger setup unless I turn the nook off. also having issues with win7/win8 not recongnizing in any fashion my nook when I connect it. I followed install steps 100% too.
so does anyone have an update on this problem or what to check or look into? no matter what nightly I flash it will not charge while powered on. if I power it down it charges just fine. this is using the stock charger, though using a normal microusb cable charges the unit fine on or off. if I flash stock 1.4.3 software charging while on works just fine. this is driving me crazy.

Were you on CM7.x using Nook Tweaks host mode (not host/vbus mode) prior to CM10?
I know its not charging because one, the light stays green and does not change to orange, but two I go into battery in settings and it shows no charge taking place. If I plugin a regular microusb cable though it does show a charge taking place. As for CM7 and Nook Tweaks, no I was originally on stock 1.4.3 software and used manualnooter to root and get CM10 installed and had the same problem. I then proceeded to try out paranoid android which I know is based on CM10, then I tried a couple different CM7 roms but went back to CM10.

You need to get some better software to tell you exactly what is happening. There are lots of them out there, some free and some paid. What you want is an app that tells you how you are connected, USB charging mode or AC adapter.
I use a paid app, Battery Monitor Widget Pro. It tells you how it is connected and the net current draw or charge rate.

As I've said in another thread regarding charging on CM10 based ROMs... I am having the same issue and am trying different configurations to narrow down the cause.
I currently have CM7.2 on SD... CM10 on eMMC... when booted to CM7 charges fine... prior to CM10 on eMMC stock would charge fine as well....
When I am booted to CM10 the light is green and displays discharging on lock screen... and in fact does discharge the battery... as soon as it goes dead... the light turns green.
When booting up... the ligh stays orange... right up until I choose eMMC Normal from Cyanoboot menu... as soon as it starts to boot CM10... green light and no charging. Using USB (non-nook cable... car charger... etc) it charges even in CM10, even shows charging on lock screen... and battery level does increase if I leave the screen off.
Software to tell how its connected is not necessary atm. And as I stated in the other thread... I cannot blatently state it is the ROMs fault at this time... I have too complex of a configuration to rule out other possible causes. But have no solution as of yet.

My battery charges very slowly. I'm using the factory nook cable and charger, CM7.2, light is orange while charging, charges all day and I get 2% charge increase. Currently at 12% charge, battery monitor widget needs at least 40% to work. Battery might have died, but then it's had a relatively short life if that's the case.
Edit: No idea what the problem is, but the solution is to plugin in the power cable, and then turn off the Nook. Charges rapidly as normal.

When running n163, my charger (twice) stopped working until I rebooted. The odd symptom was that the "n" was green, right down to a low-battery shutdown, even when the USB end of the cable was unplugged.
The NC itself acted as if the cable was unplugged, even when plugged into a USB port.
It hasn't happened under n165, but that's only since this morning.
These were some USB changes recently, weren't there?
Thanks!

It happened to me again just now. I'm running n177 now, and I'd been using my NC off and on the charger all morning. I plugged in with the gauge at about half, the plug light went green, and I got no lightning bolt on the gauge.
A reboot restored normal charging.

I had this happen to me too. Put it on the charger last night right before I went to bed. Woke up to a green 'n' but the battery was down 6%. Unplugged & replugged the charger, still a green 'n' but not charging. Reboot got an orange 'n' and it's finally charging.
Running Nightly 174.
I am seeing a bit of bizarre behavior with Nightly 166. On two units, when I power down, and plug in the charging cord, the unit boots up. I have had to press the power button to get the screen to go dark, and it will charge faster than if I had not done so.
Also, I have experienced once or twice, an issue of putting the unit under charge only to have the charge level reported as low, but, strangely, it felt like the unit was warm, like the battery had undergone charging.
A friend's Nook with 166, he claimed when he put the unit on a charge, it kept cycling screen on/off. He was using a non-OEM cable, but the proper AC adapter.
Does the unit have to wake itself? Does the OS assist in charging the device? Is there a known issue with %Charge being displayed?
I had Nightly 177 loaded but backed it out because the Market wasn't working.

That's normal behavior. Something about preventing Sleep of Death.

Can't trust non-OEM cables; there're extra conductors in the B&N cable for faster charging.

Yes; look for PBD, Premature Battery Death.

Sounds like the same issue. I find that if it's unplugged when I boot, it just doesn't charge, and the NC never notices when I insert or remove the charger cable, the lightning bolt never changes. Also, I've lost USB storage mode altogether, a real pain.
Sent from my NookColor using xda premium
Well, it turns out that this whole problem was the charge cable. I had satisfied myself that it wasn't the cable with a visit to the store earlier, but I think that was before I realized that the "plugged in" state never changed after boot.
The fact that the plug could make the NC itself so confused about the state of the power supply is really startling. By the end, the light on the cable was changing color when I powered up.

Battery Status Wonky....
Ok. Reading through this I seem to have a similar but not identical situation.
Running CyanogenMod-7-08312011-Nightly-encore with kernel 2.6.32.9.
Nothing special about the install.
Few days ago Nook took a nap and didn't wake up. Thought it was bricked but after fussing with a combination of pressing power and the "N" button finally got it to boot up like if nothing had happened.
Problem? When the battery started to discharge after its nap of death it got to 16% and stopped. Doesn't move. Perpetually at 16%.
If I plug it is to charge it the bottom gets warm, status says it is charging and the cable changes color like it is supposed to, (orange to green), just like it were fully charged but the Battery Status stays at 16%.
Bought a new cable from B&N and same thing. Battery Status stuck at 16%. Nook feels warm, (as if battery has been charged), and the cable changes color correctly, (orange to green).
At one point I even took the cable out and the status indicator showed that the battery was still being charged but no change from the 16%.
Very annoying as I keep getting notifications that I need to recharge since the battery is at 16% but I can leave it on for HOURS and it keeps working fine.
Any ideas or should I reformat to stock and get a new one from B&N?

That sounds like classic Sleep of Death, and is most likely unrelated.

At this point, I trust the cable light over the software to reflect reality, but mine would change color as I wiggled it because it was flaking out.

Did you power-cycle while plugged in? I did several boot-to-CWR while fiddling with things, and wound up with not enough power to boot when I got to the store. Try full power down, insert new cable, power up. I'm pretty sure that the software has a role in this.
At one point I even took the cable out and the status indicator showed that the battery was still being charged but no change from the 16%.

Okay. Decided to try and discharge this puppy completely and they let it charge all the way up again and see what the Battery Status indicators look like.
As of right now, (12:24 am on Wednesday 9/14/2011), my Nook has been on since boot for 7:22:14 and the Battery Voltage still shows 3613 mV with a Battery Level of 16%.
BTW Battery Temp is 27.8 C and Battery Status shows as Discharging.
How long this sucker is going to last is anyone's guess. Hopefully by tomorrow it will be dead and I can start charging it to see if the battery status goes back to normal.
I flashed my Defy with a custom ROM months ago and never had a problem. I left my phone for a few days and it's completely drained of its battery. I try to charge it using my USB cable connected to my PC, but the Defy doesn't show the animation where the battery is shown being charged; just the white LED and a black screen. When I hit the power button, it shows "bootloader 09.10, battery low cannot program". I know I flashed my phone correctly and have no idea why this screen is being shown. I didn't try to charge via wall outlet, I'm currently on vacation and only brought the USB cable with me. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: My phone is a regular MB525, flashed with with a custom Gingerbread that was posted in this very forum. On my PC the model reads MB526...
Once battery is fully drained occassionally Defy takes time to even boot up. So leave it in that state (Connected to USB ) for couple of hours and try again.
Tried and didn't work, I'm hoping plugging into the AC charger will fix this...though that won't be happening for another week..
Have you the possibility to try the battery in another defy or to use another battery?
Not until about a week..
Don't worry, your Defy will get charged when connected to wall plug.
Mine was the same situation as it won't charge on total empty battery over USB port.
But it charging normally as soon as I plug it to wall charger.
just make sure you don't flash it with any SBF!
OP! i had exact same problem and it snowballed into something huge. It started same as you did, my fone ran out of juice as I was in my office and I couldn't get USB port to charge it, all I had was white LED and black screen in my office. So, at home i plugged it into wall charger for 5 or more hours and I still couldn't see the battery that shows its charging, I tried a different wall charger and still same results.
Then my phone begin to atleast fired up in wall charger but got stuck in Moto M logo. I could only access bootloader and not the Boot recovery for some reason. I been stuck here since, my battery was fully charged externally and yet nothing, I even tried every combo (SIM in, SIM out, SD Card in, SD Card Out) etc but I couldn't get into boot recovery so I could just hard reset my Defy. I could only access the bootloader.
At that point I flashed by Defy with 2.1 SBF's like 7 of them with same results, no matter what SBF file I successfully flashed with I could for the life of me get into boot recovery.
Now, i am just sick and tired and hate Defy because its effed up. I am taking it to the shop i purchased it from tomorrow.
i guess im having almost the same problem.
my defy doesnt boot, only shows the white LED.
it is recognised by the RSD, but nothing happens.
cant boot, doesnt show anything on the screen.
what should I do?
macgyver is not working either
I had a similar issue and I used the macgyver trick and flashed a new sbf. The rom you are using possibly doesn't support charging in the off state.
Sent from my CM9 Defy
as a total android/motorola user
and i appear to be having the same issue, bootloader only!!
Could i ask what and where is the official unmodified rom for this phone.
Thank you.

Unfortunately that solution didn't fix the battery problem... and also the McGyver method didn't work.
I'm afraid that my girlfriend will need a new battery.
She was using an aged MIUI rom (more or less six months old). After the battery replacement should I have to flash the stock Froyo CEE rom via RSD or do you think that the will works again?

Damn, that's a shame...Hopefully its just a corrupt rom, the new boot loader is brick-proof I believe.
I rooted mine after upgrading and its a cracking little android phone...Actually, it doesn't get used as a phone, but a portable computer/gps.
My P5110 running KANG Build 4 without any issues for many days suddenly stopped working while running a Google+ Hangout, having an empty battery while being charged. It is not responding to power and/or volume keys anymore nor is there any screen activity.
Attaching the USB plug into my Linux box there seems to be some last signs of life:
[64895.007477] usb 2-1.1: new high-speed USB device number 64 using ehci_hcd
[64895.091500] usb 2-1.1: unable to get BOS descriptor
Any help how to get this recovered!?
TiA
After charging the device for some time now it seems to come back to life slowly (just showed a charging symbol). Lets hope this has just been a really, really empty battery which can be fixed by proper charging.
Up and running again as nothing had happened, strange.

This was a known problem in CM7 on my htc wildfire (buzz) when the battery was dead and then plugged into the charger a orange/red light would appear and the phone was unable to turn on.
The fix for me was to put some charge into the phone with the orange/red light on and once it has a little juice i remove the battery and replace, turned on the phone and reconnected the charger and it would continue to charge just fine.
Maybe this bug has leaked through ?

Not charging while phone is on..
Hi guys,
I am facing a very unique issue(basically i didnt find any thread which had the same problem as mine). My Evo does not charge while the phone is switched on nor can i connect it to my comp from the recovery after i mount it in usb mode. It charges properly while it is powered off. I have tried installing jellybread & mokeeos roms with tiamat kernel but they go into boot loop.
It is really inconvenient since i have to switch off the phone for it to charge. Please help.
The details of the system are below:
RoM: rooted stock rom from xda thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Evo/ROMs)
the kernel is also stock
I am using Amon Ra recovery 3.11
Please do help me out with this.
I figure its a software problem since it is charging properly when switched off.
Are you Full Root "S-off" ? Have you tried using a different charger / cable combo ?

Yes, My phone is fully rooted and s-off.
also i have tried using several charger, cable combos.
When it is in fastboot, i can flash files, threre is not problem there, but when I turn on USB mode in the recovery, it does not detect on the computer.
Also It charges when off, but does not when fully switched on. 1 thing that i now noticed was that sometimes, it starts charging when switched on, and then stops after 1 minute or so.
Also the battery drains extremely quickly now. This was not the case before this happened.
It would be great if you could help me out here,

Sounds like a bad battery or bad charging port... cheapest way to test is to buy a battery from ebay or something. See what happens. If the same problem persists its a hardware issue with the port itself (which I think it is from the sounds of it). Or you can unroot it, load a stock Sense rom and go to a Sprint store to have them look at it.
You can also try cleaning the Charger port itself out. I've issues in the past with charger ports getting dirty, which causes a bad connection. But I would still defiantly try a different Battery.
thanks guys, will clean the port and also try a new battery...
will get back once i have done these...
Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to read this. I am having a serious problem charging my Nook Color after updating to CM10.1.
I have been running CM7 for about a year and finally decided to bump up to CM10 because many apps now require a faster/higher rom.
Well I can tell you that I love the update with 1 slight problem. My Nook will not charge when I am plugged in and using it. It only charged
while turned off. I use my Nook a lot and at times it needs to be plugged in. I have tried 3 different B&N NC charging cable. 2 of them were
new out of the package. I returned it to CM7 to make sure it wasn't the Nook battery having internal problems and it charged fine while using it. Wiped and reflashed to CM10 and same problem. I have seen that several others have had the problem through google searches but could find no solutions. I really don't want to go back to CM7 but not being to use my NC without having to turn it off and letting it charge for 2 hours before using again isn't an option either. I have a dsmeg.txt file that I made from emulator after I plugged it in that I am attaching. Again. Thanks for your help and hopefully this will help others.
