[Q] NativeSD - slow / laggy - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera
Hey there o/,
Last month i switched from NAND to NativeSD.
+ more storage
+ easy to install ?
- sometimes really laggy!
& thats the point why I'm now writing to you.
First I testet this ROM:
[3.Nov.2012][ROM] NexusHD2-JellyBean-4.1.2-CM10 V1.2 [NativeSD]
and the first problems appeared:
z.B. "Facebook does not respond.Do you want to close it? (Wait / Report / OK)
Apps sometimes needs a lot of time to load
Sometimes when I press the power button the keys glow but noting happens
laggy / slow system
com.google.process.gapps (a few times I think)
I use a Samsung 8GB micro SD class 10 card.
I searsched some of the topics here and also the topic mentioned above but found nothing that helped me ... also I dont really know what to search for.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
the important factor for the sd card is not the class, but the random read/write of small (4k) blocks, , , in general, the higher the class, teh slower teh random r/w, so thats probably why your getting occasional lag.
Try it again with a class 4 or class 6 card if you have one, , if not, at least run some benchmarks on your card, see what figure it gives for random r/w

NativeSD (SD-EXT)

For high speed read/write SD Card only (Class 6 or 10). Otherwise you may get poor performance.
Please create a FAT32 primary partition with 32KB cluster size, then an EXT4 primary partition with default cluster size on your SD card.
Please visit NativeSD thread for more info.
And here a result of a benchmark test with my microSD

Take a look at your 4k random write compared to the other scores.
Im only passing on what I've read in several other places,,,that overall, the small random r/w speed is important when running an OS. If you choose to not agree then that's fine, you SHOULD question it, then you should research it. If you find information to the contrary, then I'm always happy to be shown to be wrong.
No ... I dont say hat you or anyone else is wrong... but it seems that there are 2 opinions ... I checked it now with an class 4 card ... and it was even or more worse than before ...
Isnt there anyone else with that Problem? Testet the ICs now too and same Problem ...
Need Help!
Thanks to all that commented up to now!
The microSD-Card!
Hello guys,
I really need your help :fingers-crossed:
Its really not funny with such a lame system
Apps answers need a lot of time - often process xyz closed / no answer
Contacts (20) need to load for a long time (~5-10sec.)
Keyboard often needs a while to appear
Lockscreen sometimes not unlockable / black screen / no touch reply
Installed now differenet ROMS
8GB SD (Samsung Class 10 - Benchmarks (post above)!
About 10 Apps (exclusive preinstalled Apps)
Do you need more infos?
Am I the only one with this problem (slow / laggy System?)
Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance! :good::highfive:

As it was said before - NativeSD became very laggy when using slow card.
There is a recommendation to use class 10 cards, because they are generally faster. However 4k random read/write speed is almost as important, as sequential read/write speed (the second one is guaranteed by Class 10, the first one - random - unfortunately not).
So, you have to buy microSD card which is tested for sufficient random read/write speed, like Sandisk Mobile Ultra.

Okay thank you - mhh next time Ill check some more points - its incredible how many things are important - but okay ... quite funny
Hello,guys
I'm using Xylo's PACman1.1a,and I meet problems on my new SD.
The SD is sandisk's 16G,class10, I've tried to format it with SDformat...
I try to install ROM by NativeSD,but when i run the rom,and sometimes the phone can't be waken up from sleep, and sometimes many FORCE CLOSE notifications appear and the phone will enter the loading screen...
I tried to wipe SD EXT and all partion of sd and NAND,and reinstall the rom many times, but when i used the phone, the problems appear again
then i get the ROM installed back to NAND,and use LINK2SD to move the apps to EXT4 partion. And the FC issue is still there, and sometimes it will notify'SD has been removed',or 'SD must be formatted'or'the sd is empty',but everything looks right on PC
I tried to search solution of it,but found nothing...
Is it really the problem of'Compatibility'?The SDCARD can't be used on my leo?:crying:
or who can tell me how to make the card be able to use on LEO normally...
Any idea is welcome...
You are not alone
Hi,
I am using Native SD. I specially bought a Samsung 16BG Class 10 card.
I installed latest Tytung JB Rom.
The interface is incredibly smooth. Swiping from one screen to the other is amazing. Scrolling in a liste (like parameters) is also very smooth. Games are running ok. So I should be satisfied!
I am not because I have the lag issue. By lag I mean that I sometime can wait more than 10 seconds when going from an app to another. Maps can take ages to start but not always. Instead of complaining, I prefer to mention what seems to help a bit:
- format your SD with EXT4 in recovery mode. I formated in EXT3 and converted it to EXT4. The performance was awful. Helps a lot.
- reduce the number of running process in background to 2. Helps a bit.
- close all apps you don't need running. This helps a lot!!!
I tested the speed of my SD card with Antutu and I am reaching above 10 MB read/write with no overclock. This is more than the speed of NAND. So the speed should be ok.
There's something we are missing but I don't know what yet.
To do:
- I will investigate the IO Scheduler. I hope it will make a difference.
- I will test PACMAN Rom
Okay - here the first things I detected up to now:
1st - What is this damn hat for?^^
2nd - The Camera isnt working really fine - pictures are ooooookay ... but I cant see the surrounding I want to shot - becuase Ive got a bug-screen ... something like stripes and so on ...
3rd - Speed is more or less okay
4th - Sometimes long "wakeup" time ...
5th - Nice keyboard
to be continued ...
Hi,
I am using NativeSD as well and I experienced the following for SD-Cards:
With my first card, a Transcend 16 gb Class 10, I had a lot of apps breaking down and hot reboots from time to time. This was the same problem with all the nativesd roms.
I decided to buy a different card because people on other threads said that Class 4 and Class 6 cards might be better than Class 10 cards for nativesd because of one important factor:
the 4K "random read/write" values
I finally decided to buy a Sandisk class 6 32 gb, but they sent me a sandisk Class 10/ UHS 1 instead
I tried anyway and my overall experience is a lot better now (except for some hot reboots once in a while)
I tested the 4K random read/write of that card on my computer with crystaldiskmark and achieved the following values:
Transcend 16 gb Class 10:
read: 3.9 MB/s
write: 0.020 MB/s
Sandisk 32 gb UHS 1 Class 10
read: 3.328 MB/s
write: 1.081 MB/s
My old Sandisk 2gb (don't know the class):
read: 3.154 MB/s
write: 0.014 MB/s
This result confused me a little bit. Is it possible that random write is so important?
In one thread they mentioned the Patriot Class 10 16gb to be very good.
So I would suggest to try different cards or search the forum.
Maaaaybe someone else has a card which enables him to have a super smooth nativesd android.
If that is you, reader, please tell us
Greets
Some figures
It seems from different sources that the type of SD card seems to matter. The class is not enough.
I just made a comparison test between a class 6 and a class 10. I used CrystalDiskMark.
Results:
**************************Class 6 Transcend***************Class 10 Samsung
____________________Read_______Write____________Read________Write
sequential_________15.2MB/s____11.04MB/s________19.8MB/s____17.66MB/s
512K_____________15.10MB/s____1.08MB/s________18.40MB/s____1.164MB/s
4K________________3.79MB/s____0.018MB/s________2.67MB/s____0.017MB/s
- For big files the class 10 is quicker. But when the files get smaller the class 6 becomes speedier.
- Both cards have a very bad 4K write performance. I suspect, the lag is coming from there.
- In this case, the real life experience is that both cards operate the same way: lags!!!
I found a review of the Sandisk Ultra mobile. The 4K write speed is more than 100 times faster than my cards. But the sequential write speed is less quick than my cards. All micro SD cards are not made equal! Guess what? I just ordered one. I will come back with the results: the benchmarks and the real life experience.

Thanks for this. It made me think and check out the problems I had. Very poor performance and all kinds of apps and system processes just aborted with error messages. It wasn't even possible to actually use the hd2 anymore. I kept pressing 'OK' on all the errors. I checked the 4K write speed of SD card I used for NativeSD and it was 0.006 MB/s. I guess that's the problem. By the way, it's a brand new 16 GB class 10 SDHC of ICIDU (icidu.com). It's a darn outrage they call this a class 10 (I know the classification is based on other parameters)! I've just ordered a new one from sandisk, this time not so cheap. Hope this will be better. Will let you know if that improves the situation. In the mean time I switched back to NAND with DataonExt.
Is there anywhere a really helpful thread with SDcard - recommendations?!

[Q] Performance of Focus with and without an SD Card?
Hi All, I was wondering if someone who has added an SD card to their Focus could comment on the performance of it with it in and with it out. Maybe a video of before and after showing a game loading or just a general comment on what they've noticed? Thanks very much and looking forward to your responses! Jonno
I got my Focus yesterday. Played with it all afternoon and evening. I already had a 16GB Sandisk class 2 card which is listed as compatible, so I went ahead and installed it. Set everything back up and played with it some more, plus this morning. I've noticed no slowdowns or lagginess of any kind. I've got 22GB free after the install. Also tried the tethering and it worked great. FYI: I did order the 16GB Kingston class 4 card, but didn't want to wait for it. I'll put that one in my old phone. Verdict: very happy!
Thanks very much! I saw a video just now with someone who had added a SD card to their Focus and it still outperformed the HD7. BUT, it was relatively empty (< 2 GB of storage used) which means that it is possible that more of the data was on the NAND memory than on the SD Card. It would be interesting to see someone install an app without the card in and run it to see how long it takes, then add a card and install the same app and time it, and then fill up the card with media and THEN install the app (once the storage is almost full) and then time it. May take some time but should be worth it in the end . I know the data is supposed to be spread across any of the storage facilities available but we're not sure how it is done (simply filling it up, striping the data).
Yes, that's video was unfair, need a full data card to test, waiting Http://Ricky119.com

Click to collapse I ran for a week without an SD card and encountered many of the same issues reported (app hang/crash, marketplace lag/hang). I had to reboot a couple times my first week for one reason or another. I've since added a class 2 sandisk 8gb and do not notice any difference, performance or otherwise. Incidently I have not had to reboot since I added memory. I have rebooted it once only verify the data was still there after reset. Hope this helps,
I tested my coworker's Focus vs mine. He had a 16GB Sandisk class 2 card with >8gb of data. I had no card with ~7GB of data. I launched ilomilo on each phone about the same time. They finished pretty much at the same time.
I'll second the above, I've noticed no difference between having a card and not having a card except for the amount of storage available. I'm not saying there's no difference, I'm saying I've noticed no difference so I didn't bother measuring. Programs load and run at the same speed either way, media loads and plays at the same speed...no difference. Guess I should add that mine is an 8GB Sandisk class 2 card. No problems whatsoever as far as speed, rebooting or anything else.
In my opinion, the best type of test would be a stock Focus vs a Focus with an added micro sd card with the phone+card loaded to the max with content.
I will test this and report back. I have a Focus stock and my wife has one with a 16GB Sandisk Class 2 card in it. I'll load it up and see if there is a difference over the weekend. My Focus with no memory card has not crashed in the marketplace yet, my wife's does a lot...
Great, thanks very much! Looking forward to the results.
This is really weird. My first test has one focus with a Class 2 Sandisk 16GB card but only 4.5 GB used total on the phone. The other Focus is stock with no card and about 4.5 GB used also. Speed tests so far Stock Focus - - Marketplace and browsing the catalogs - much faster the first time I tested. after however it was mixed and occasionally the 16GB was quicker. - People Hub - faster load and browsing. - Bing Faster load just barely. Focus+16GB - faster at loading Uverse and Netflix - Loads Uverse faster - Loads Netflix a second faster. Both phones always get back to the main screen at the same speed, weird Also, occassionally the 16GB is slower, then the next test its faster. I'll load up the card and report back.
The way you should test Try this place the sd card in then add 9 gb of music and videos then install the program. I highly doubt the sd cards are causing program and marketplace crashes as I can get those to more noticably with wifi on. Also no one really knows what is running in the background. There is multitasking just not available to 3rd party apps so who knows if we are getting facebook syncs when things act weird. I would suggest not setting any accounts up and power off the phone then power it back on if you want a real comparison. The OS files would run from the NAND so dlls and other files that games and programs use should always run from the NAND but not the program it's self so loading the card with data that fills the nand then installing a program to the sd card would show if there are performance issues.
I've been very curious about this. I have a pny 8gb class 4 in mine. I've been paranoid about performance decreases, but i haven't seen any clear difference. But i would certainly appreciate a video or something confirming that there is no performance decrease, just to settle my paranoia.
When I first bought my Focus it was about a week before I actually installed a SD Card in it. Im using a 8gb Sandisk class 2 right now and have noticed NO difference in performance at all. Its still fast, smooth and runs beautifully. Ill be getting a 16gb Sandisk class 2 card very soon...I would assume that wont change things either....Seems Sandisk is the way to go if you wanna be safe...since Sandisk in used for phone memory by Samsung.
I have the Kingston 32GB card in... no issues what so ever and I have over 15GBs on the card to date. I took the chance and so far *KNOCK-ON-WOOD* nothing has come up
Should be getting a Sandisk 16GB Class 10 soon, will update.
Best method of formatting SD card for best Android performance?
Hi all, I'm planning on a format of my SD card. Before I do so I figured I'd created a new thread here on the subject... I use Darkstone1337's SuperRAM 1.5 Froyo build which works almost perfectly EXCEPT since changing from a 256mb data.img to a 2gb data.img I'm now getting the 'sleep of death', i.e. phone taking forever to wake from calls and standby often. At first I thought it was down to importing data from my previous data.img so I formatted and started over but I have the same problem with an untouched 2gb build. So, if anyone has any suggestions on SoD and how I should format my SD card next (allocation unit size, etc.) I'd be interested to know. A couple of threads say Sleep of Death and the SD card may go hand in hand. I find it very strange that I never experienced the problems on the default 256mb data.img!
Replying to my own post... I found that the Sleep of Death issue was down to my Class 4 MicroSD card, this one: http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDHC/MyMemory/MyMemory-16GB-Micro-SD-(SDHC)-Card---Class--4 Write speeds were ridiculous... fluctuating between 0.25mb/sec and a max of 3mb/sec, which is obviously below the minimum standard for a Class 4 card. So likely faulty. I tested the card with h2testw which also confirmed the slow read/write speeds. So I've switched to a Class 2 which is averaging about 5mb/sec which is certainly decent for a Class 2 and best of all it's fixed the SoD problems! SuperRAM 1.5 is running great again, even on the 2gb data.img. I can also boot builds that for god only knows what reason were refusing to boot on the Class 4 card (like Darkstone's SuperRAM Sense 0.1) Formatted my Class 2 to FAT32 with everything on default in Windows 7. No problems. SuperRAM now only has a couple of seconds lag max when switching on from standby and perhaps 3-4 secs max when waking during/after a call. These issues are being discussed in another thread though and look to be hardware/kernal related so not an issue of the SD card.
Yes. but we did not know what is the best format for Andriod, I got 2Gbyte SD with my Samsung, it was formated as FAT, a 1.5 mbyte data folder of seesmic twitter client takes 24.8mbyte from actual desk space !, there should be a better format, I wanted to try the Fat32 to minimize cluster size, will check, if you have any details please share, thanks
[Q] [Transcend] [MicroSDHC 16 GB] Problems running Android proper.
Hi XDA devs, Yesterday I was happy to receive my new microsdhc card 16 gb class 6 from the Transcend brand. I copied [JAN 26][REL]Cope's SD HD2 Gingerbread/CyanogenMod7 from my old card (Scandisk class 4 8 gb) to my new card. Then when I started haret it took much longer to boot. Once in Android it took a long time to load my apps and widgets. I turned off the screen and tried to turn it on, but the whole thing was stuck. I had to take the battery out. This morning I tried to boot again, and I faced a new weird thing: after a long time watching the boot animation it showed me the Welcome to your HTC HD2 setup wizard. It was like it had created a new data.img but it didn't, all my apps were still there, only my Home and settings of the phone were gone. Then I tried to copy my old Android (2.2) to my new card. Faced the long boot time again, and it took again a long time to load my apps. I noticed that when I only have the Android folder on my sd it boots a lot quicker, but when I'm using up more space it starts to face problems. What do you think, is there any change my new card will function as it should? <EDIT> I just did a fresh install and everything looked fine, fast and stable. I'm going to reinstall my apps by the use of TITANIUM backup, let's see what happens to the speed. </EDIT> [EDIT 2] When transferring all my data back and set back my apps: minor change. Anyone got a solution?

Biggest issues are ram management and slow microsd speed
After having this phone for more than a year now, i can say it's not the best phone I've had. 2 main issues are : 1 - Ram management is awful. I open 3 tabs on chrome, then open youtube, then open es file explorer, then i return to chrome and the page refreshes. This should not be happening. Is there anything i can do to fix this? 2- speed of reading on my microsd is slow on this phone and on this phone only. Its like theres something reducing the speed. I've got a sandisk ultra microsdxc 128gb, its writing speed is fine. But the reading speed is come and go. Some times its ok. Some times ita soo slow i cant watch a video on the card. It works fine when directly inserted on other devices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
1. We can only hope the RAM management is better on the nougat rom 2. I'd try another card. If that one does it too your MicroSD slot may be on the fritz, my MXPE with a 64GB SiliconPower UHS 1 (U3) transfers ridiculously fast. like 80MB/s
