So my parents currently own 2 android phones htc desire s and wildfire s.
They talk a bit about ipads and how it would be usefull, but I have feeling thats only cause they havent heard of android tablets yet.
They play smaller games like wordfeud, angry birds and well simple games. They do read alot of news and some youtube and like simple apps and reason Im not asking them is cause I would love to surprise them with a tablet as a christmas present.
And then ofc I have something to play with when im home
So yeah my question is do you think this would be a good tablet for them to share or is there something better for their kinda use?

Yeah havent even really thought about that part, but guessing that with the size it would be a nice book replacement.
And yeah their still kinda android noobs, but in my experience android is only getting easier and prettier to use, so hopefully they would love it
And it s multiuser when iPad is single pilot....

If they are still reasonably new to the whole idea of smart phones and tablets, Then the nexus 7 is by far the obvious choice. Simply for the reason that it is running on the same/similar os to the phones that they have and so getting to grips with it will be a much easier experience for them.
It is also far cheaper than ipad, if you find that they really like it you could get them a second one for a present next time around for the total cost of 1 iPad.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Well yes, the size and specs alone make it very ideal, not to mention to the price. Also the ability to add multiple users could also be very useful for them.

Im pretty sure by "iPads" they mean all tablets, it's just that ipad is the most recognizable.
I wouldnt bother them with yet another OS (iOS), if they're kinda used to android, its better. Then again, HTCs android 4.0 looks COMPLETELY different than Googles android 4.2.1. It might me an issue, but still, it looks more similar then to iOS.
Nexus 7 is cool because you can fit it in one hand, which might be helpful (you know how elderly people always look up thing (like newspaper) up close and lift their glasses a little ).
While android <2.3 was very geeky and didn't look all that pretty compared to iOS at the time, things have changed, android has become very user friendly, even for newbies.
I have an 88 year old grampa here with an original Motorola Droid... I got him this tablet and he loves it to death... everything is familiar with it being android and the size is perfect
"If I could make phone calls on this damn thing I'd throw that other piece of $#:% away"
He thinks phones should be this size so they're easier to see...
Should be good.. Or I hope so, got my mom a 32gb for Christmas.
She's got a galaxy s2 for her phone. And also has a viewsonic g-tab from the woot-off. That one was a mistake for sure from a normal end-user perspective and it kind of gave her a bad taste of android.
She also has the original Nook Color. Which at this point is just pretty well aged. And she never let me touch that one, so its still running the crap Barnes and noble software.
She's always said she wants an ipad. But it will be a cold day in hell before I buy an apple product so that ain't happening. Especially for double the cost.
And actually, I've also got the g-tablet, and a transfomer prime, and those mainly collect dust since I've gotten the nexus 7. It's the perfect size, I carry it with me everywhere. An additional reason I think, even if she had an iPad as well, the nexus would still get more use.
The phablet interface will make it pretty easy to go from their phones to that, without to much confusion. DO IT.
Wow!! Just because someone is older doesn't mean they are dumb or slow!! I am 66 and certainly no techie. I have to stay out of the dev sections because most of the time I have no idea what they are talking about. But, I have a Captivate running AOKP Milestone 1 (currently being used as a multimedia device), my wife's Infuse running PACman, my GNote running PACman, my N7 running unofficial AOKP 4.2 and last but not least, my two year old NookColor running PA 2.9.9.....and running it very nicely!!
Get them the N7.....they will love it and will love you for getting for them. But, one word of warning.......they will probably not be happy sharing it.....so be prepared to buy another!!!!!

If this was reply to my comment, I wasn't implying that at all, I'm just following my personal experience with my grandparents, one grandma can handle a PC for basic operations (skype, gmail, internet, office), while my other grandparents get confused by the new way then need to watch TV with the box that the cable company provided them, and they consider a good phone one that has massive keys.
I did show them the N7 the other day, and they were fascinated, they just don't really want it or don't find any use for it.
Of course, everyone's different

Bought a Nexus 7 32GB version yesterday and gifted it to my self. Overall I really do like the specs on the device and how the device handles. I was using a Kindle Fire which was running JB 4.1.2.
While the Kindle Fire was running JB smooth without any problems that I seen. I just felt like something was missing as in some features which was lacking. I since then flashed the Kindle Fire back to default and sold the device.
I can say for 100% I'm a lot more happy owning the Nexus 7 then the Kindle Fire I had. Sometimes when using voice search in order to search for something. It really makes me want to laugh at times cause I said one thing. It thinks I said 'p0rn' which was not even close to what I said.
But I won't hold that the device's fault since I do have a minor speech impediment. But them the Nexus 7 they will love the device I'm sure of it.

I keep thinking about getting a Xoom or something else Honeycomb when they come out. The one thing I keep hitting on is how and how much I would use it.
As I type this I'm looking at two computers with two monitors each, a 360, and a ps3, then I have a old tube tv in the other room with a Nintendo, Genesis, and a PS2 hooked up to it.
Sometimes I do sit in front of all that and use my "little" 4.3 phone to surf the web, but not a whole lot. When I had my Hero all I wanted was something bigger, the Evo hit that perfectly!
What are you guys thoughts on tablets in general?
Looks sexy

I really want a tablet. Especially the xoom! Looks sweet. The price tag is high but it looks worth it. Itll be a while before i could get anything like that so have to see what comes out after that. It being a official google device makes it better tho.
A year ago, I did not want one..I have changed my mid. I could live with my Evo till the end of my contract if I had an awesome tablet to play with. I spend a LARGE part of my day surfing the web on my phone. After owning the Evo, I could see myself LOVING a tablet. After seeing Honeycomb, I lust.
I have an iPad. I use it to play games and to browse the web when I'm taking a dump. Those two things alone keep me on it for about 2-3 hours daily.
I'll probably get an Android tab eventually but for now the iPad works fine for my purposes.

...which has a very underwhelming CPU/GPU and a still non fully working port? Even with a fully working Honeycomb ROM it's not really worth it.
As for tablets, I don't really need one but I'll probably get a one soon. It's going to be between the iPad 2, Xoom, and maybe even the WebOS tablets.
Actually for me it's the other way around. I used to dream of having a tablet but now that I have an evo, i don't see any point of getting one.
Having a 4.3 and another 7inch device, even 10inch is just overkill.
Besides, once we get dual core phones, there won't be any point to get a tablet beside screen size, which is not that much of a difference.

I agree... Especially since sprint hoooooeeeed us all out of our prime membership upgrades. I'd rather pay for a new tablet than full price for a phone, and just wait for my 2 year upgrade to end.
$500-600 for a new phone when i still have my fully capable evo that runs silky smooth and 99.99% of the apps on the android market
ORRR
$500-700 on a tablet with a much bigger screen and capable of running dungeon defenders....
Thank you sprint for taking away my upgrade because I never would have considered getting a tablet otherwise......................................................................................................assholes
FWIW, I'll give it a week to let users shake it down, and if there's nothing really busted I'll be getting a Xoom.
Tried a few tablets already (Viewsonic G-Tablet, Huawei Ideos, Galaxy Tab) and really want one in a 10" form-factor (so, no Galaxy Tab) with a decent screen and touchscreen (so, no to the other two).

Its horrible this is such a good point! I've been giving Boost some real serious thought and the money I save could be a great excuse to spend the cash on a sweet tablet. The only catch is it seems like all the good tablets are signing on to a carrier.
Xoom is a bit steep for me, so i'm actually gonna wait for the Asus Transformer, which is supposed to fall between 400-700, i'm guessing 16/wifi, 16/3g, 32/wifi and 32/3g with $100 seperating them. The specs for the upcoming devices all look similiar enough that it really falls to build quality and any additional features, and i like the idea of a 10inch netbook form factor where the screen comes off.
I was interested in the Xoom but I want an wifi-only version and I'm not willing to pay as much as a laptop [or more] for a tablet.
Moreover, the Xoom is pretty unattractive considering the likely-hood of a unlockable bootloader.

Honeycomb itself looks amazing, makes me kinda want to get the Xoom. but i think im good with my Evo and laptop. Maybe later when different Honeycomb products come out.
Before I go pay that much money for a tablet ill just go buy another laptop with 10 times better specs. I pretty much feel the same way I did about when the ipads came out.. not much in terms of being useful for me.
For everybody saying laptops better fill the role remember the way the world is moving. I believe the xoom could accomplish most everything a laptop could, especially once developers start making apps for it. The specs of the zoom are amazing as well,.and its portability and "fun of use" will easily best out any laptop... Some books may be up to par.
Im just iffy about the multitasking on honeycomb to be honest.

A tablet will never replace my laptop... not unless it comes with a TB HD, a top notch graphics card, office, sql, access, etc. It's not really even practical for me to use one as a replacement. If I were to ever get a tablet it would be strictly for a casual/fun type thing.
Anyone that is looking to get the XOOM, i just find out today that COSTCO will be carrying them at the cell phone booth. They had the samsung tab for $100 less then everyone else, so might want to check it out if you plan to get one. The email said live displays would start arriving in stores the 22nd, and display banners/signs would start arriving the 24th. It did not say when the units would go on sale or for how much.
No show today
Checked with Costco this am 22nd, and the fellow told me they will not have anything until Thurs.--he knew nothing about price etc.
I doubt it'll be cheaper than verizons on contract price of 600.
even then, people said the apple ipad was to expensive at 499, but the xoom with no flash support(i know yet, but it will, maybe, its motorola who locks there stuff down tight, ask anyone with a Moto X, so who knows. lol) is going for 800?!

Why is that? Motorola has competed with HTC pretty well in the smartphone realm, why are you automatically assuming that HTC will be better in the tablet realm?
The HTC tablet announced at WMC is a joke compared to the Xoom IMHO.

Agreed - HTC seems to be pushing too much sense and not really promoting the android aspect of it. Yeah they update their phones relatively timely manner but they're doing with sense what apple did with unix - keeping it limited to only what they want and that's whats irritating.
I think the Flyer would have been nicer with vanilla honeycomb and not all the extra fluff of sense. Its the main reason why Moto, Samsung, AND LG are keeping with the vanilla version - they finally realize they'll get more people on board if they put out a standard tab the way apple did with the ipad
I might get the xoom after it is rooted, and bootloader unlocked, cm8 tab edition ftw
i am loving every aspect of it, but the only thing stopping me is there are no good apps and games for Android. I won't be playing games, but there will be time when i will want to and there are no good games. I can't justify myself spending $800 and not having a Complete product.

About the flyer truth HTC adds a lot stuff to their phones that not a lot people that are into deveplomet (like people at this forum) wants but to the regular consumer it does look really nice, is impresive what they did with android os (not honeycomb ) and is easy to use, plus 7 inch sounds like a good size I didn't get the sansumg tablet cause bad experience with sansumg in the past but anyone with open mind should read this article (link below), and most it to me sounds correct, android seems to be rushing to it just like gingerbread, they said in the past the gingerbread was going to have a better UI but it looks the same to me (just some new stuff here and there ) while HTC have been more advance to what google is doing, we can just put a simple example like facebook integration with HTC is better then google integration (after you download the app) so I have to give it up to HTC for taking a risky approach, and of course google for.bringing android

You obviously haven't played with the iPad enough. Well, lucky for you, I have (I have owned one since its launch). And I'll tell you that the lack of Flash support alone is reason not to get one. That, by itself, makes this tablet inferior to any Android-based one. Trust me on this! You'd be surprised how many sites that you visit rely on Flash.
Also, another thing that really limits the iPad is the fact that apps are not flexible in its code to accurately extrapolate the pixel density, leading you to have iPhone/iPod apps and iPad (HD) apps. Not the case in Android. All apps work in all devices. Regardless of its resolution. This means that all apps in the Android Market are also available to its tablet users. Not the case with the App Store. I'd say about half of the apps on my iPad are iPhone apps that are 2x scaled over, making it painfully pixelated.

Sorry for the crappy picture but here you go.
I am just going to wait for the $600 WiFi only version. I spoke with mobile guy at Costco and he said there is a WiFi only version in their system that will come out 30 days after the 3G Xoom is released (Feb 24). I have a Costco AMEX card and will just use that as Costco has a better return policy than BB. I also have a BB card that has nothing on it and interest free for 18 months sound good as well. I guess I will cross that bridge when the WiFi only model gets released.
The twitter about the unlocked bootloader totally changed me....now I waiting for the wifi only xoom...if it's available on Costco even the better.
ipad fans: hows that usb, flash, and camera support coming along? oh, my bad, you'll never have those...

Best advice is to go into a phone shop and have a play around with the demo devices and see what you like. There are loads of phones especially from HTC who seem to be releasing a new phone every week.
Galaxy Note or Nexus. Xperia ones are nice. But I dont trust Sony Ericsson..
Galaxy Nexus! After all its pure Google phone
If you want something different you should consider the Nokia N9. I've only tried it briefly in shop, but my god it's gorgeous.

You don't need a phone, then! You need something different! Any other phone is going to be just too simmilar to your SGS2 (which I think you should seriously reconsider fixing). Try an Open Pandora (Google it! I can't post links!), it's the closest coolest thing I can think of!
Just go buy an iPhone. You're asking if there's a better alternative to one of the best Android phones around? pfffft....our phone is a software upgrade away from being a better phone than a galaxy nexus (apart from that massive screen ofc...).
I personally think after windows 8 is released and the windows 8 tablets start flooding the market with metro ui windows phone is going to get a lot more popular too as a result. I'm waiting to see what happens but I might make the switch.
Right now i would not recommend anything for android. If you want a whole new experience, try WP7 or meego.

+1 to this.
In fact I am eying for WP 7 or furthers as my future OS. I like Microsoft and their work. If everything goes well WP will be the mostly used and popular OS within next 3-4 years.
For me it would be the Galaxy Note, it does everything the G-Nexus does, but better. All it needs is ICS. Personally I think the 5" screen is great, especially for films which I already use my GS2 for a lot.

I agree that Mango is the best mobile OS right now, but I'm not planning to replace my SGS2 any time soon. The fact is that the android ecosystem is just a lot stronger right now, everything from ROM development to app choices. ICS also looks like it makes some important strides from a quality-of-OS standpoint (though I have yet to put my hands on a Galaxy Nexus myself), so hopefully in a few months we'll see those benefits rolled into our GS2s.
I hope you're right and Windows Phone has greater traction in 3-4 years, and if it keeps going the way it's going, I may buy a windows handset in a couple years. Microsoft is still awful at marketing, though, and if average smartphone buyers know that there is something besides iPhone available, they probably have only heard of android, or maybe knew some guy who hated Windows Mobile five years ago. They've got a lot of hurdles to clear; we'll see how it goes.
To the OP: This has probably already been said to death, but the only GSM android phone that can be argued to be better than the SGS2 is the Galaxy Nexus right now. If you just want something different, I know a lot of people who like the RAZR, or you could always go for the monster of a phone that is the Note.
Having owned a nexus (ok only for a few days) i would say that the SGS2 is the better phone. Yes the Nexus has ICS and a nice screen but you are limited with Flash (ok it will come), no radio and mainly storage. I just cant live with non expandable phones with only 16gb on board. Maybe in a few months if and when the 32gb version of the nexus comes along and they have fixed flash but not now.
As shr33kant said, the SGS2 is one update (ICS) away from being a totally better phone than the Nexus.
Maybe the Note is the way forward. I have been toying with the idea myself. The screen would be massive for Video. And by the way i didnt really see / feel a difference in screen size between the SGS2 and Nexus, not sure why i didnt but i didnt.
Hope this helps.
Either the SGN or the Razr. I'd go for the latter if i were you, it seems so durable and premium...

He'll probably get board with that, so to make it interesting he has to make a random choice between 6 'chutes. One of them has a chute but no connection ropes.

This tablet doesn't appear to be worth the $400 I paid for it. The tablet itself is just boring and laggy, a ton of incompatible apps and games (due to both the tab and devs)... I mean damn, this tablet is a real disappointment. What reason do I have for justifying this tab s purchase? On top of all that, Samsung really ****ed up in the tablet area.
Seriously; give me some reasons why I. Shouldn't trash this cheap and. Get something better.

Nexus 7. Or at the time of purchase, ASUS Transformer Prime.
The tab its awesome.. Just flash cm9 and wait few days for Samsung to release the official ics to get the working camera... Ics rocks in the gtab 10.1 its a completely different product
And as soon as Samsung releases ics files and Google releases jb source we will have jb in the tab being beyond smooth...
Take it easy enjoy your tab good things are about to happen

In the entire rant above you never once mentioned anything specific that: 1) you want to do, 2) you can't do. I use mine for streaming video from Plex and PlayOn (Hulu Plus, HBO GO) over Wi-Fi and 3G, download and watch HD movies from Google Play, read books and magazines, catch up on the news through dedicated apps and the browser, control my Google TV's with the remote app, use it navigate all over the world with CoPilot, etc., etc. That doesn't seem boring to me. Of course a newer tablet with a Teg3 processor is going to be faster. But for doing what I described above the G-Tab is more than capable. And when the ICS update is released in a couple of weeks it'll get a lot smoother too. Look at it this way, with all the tablets in the world for Apple to try and get banned they picked the G-Tab. Kind of flattering actually.

Personally, I and I'm assuming others could care less what you do better you convince you to stay with a device you're clearly unhappy with.

Really? I'm a troll because I dislike this piece of **** tablet? I've been an Android user since 2008, since the dawn of the G1, but I'm a troll for disliking a product? Kill yourself. The other Android users are right; Samsung fanboys are some of the most defensive, stuck up people ever. Just because I'm a long time Android user doesn't mean I'm afraid to call out a ****ty product when I use one.

It's not exactly about what it can and can't do, it's how it does it. Biggest problem I'm having with this is lag, the lag is ridiculous, and it's pretty funny because a lag free experience was what nVidia boasted about at the debut of Tegra 2.

Running CM9 right now (I LOVE Aokp on my Sensation, myTouch, Galaxy Nexus but AOKP is a bit odd on the tab, and crashy). Some apps are smooth, some are laggy as ****. egl drivers on this really suck though, it could be a lot better. Gonna wait and see how good (or how bad) ICS runs with Samsung's official drivers. If it's still awful then I'm just gonna get rid of this crap and go for a Nexus 7. ASUS actually does **** right and gets it right. That's why Google made them the official Nexus 7 manufacturer, and that's one of Google's best choices ever.
I wouldn't pay 400 for the GT today. A year ago, it was well worth it. If your problem is with apps, get the the iPad. If it's speed, get the Transformer Infinity or the Nexus 7. Simple.

I have no problem with apps at all, Google Play is amazing annd has a great selection of apps. But this tablet can't run most apps without lag, and it's ridiculous. iOS is an extremely boring and disappointing OS so any of those iCrap devices can go dig a hole and die in it. I want the Transformer Pad Infinity, but with $500+ vs $199 (and tax, shipping), with the only significant different being screen resolution... The Nexus 7 is hard to pass up. Sadly my laptop is ****ting out so I might have to pass up on the Nexus 7 for now and get a new laptop, but God damn.... You really have no idea how much I want that Nexus 7.
I'm still running HC 3.2 cause I want the camera but task650 has done a great job. I don't see any lag but some apps don't work which is a bummer, but I still don't think its a waste.
Lag has always been an issue but I've always just lived with it hoping for ICS to come out and save the day. Still waiting (have the verizon tablet and paying for mobile data so no, CM9 is not in the cards for me). Now having a One X in hand for my phone makes the GT feel even more long in the tooth but until there's another android based LTE tablet out there to jump to with better performance I'll stick it out with what I've got.
Depending on when you bought this, yes. I got this the first day it came out and for what it was, it was awesome. It was one of the first Android tabs and I've watched Android's tablet ecosystem grow. If you've passed this recently, there are way better options. I myself got a nexus 7, but there are lots of praise for the Asus infinity and people with their prime are generally happy with it. Good luck and see if you can get an exchange as the Samsung tab definitely isn't worth 400 anymore
My life for Aiur
Its definitely not the fastest thing these days but I use it non stop and it runs games, music, movies, etc. just fine for me so I have no complaints. Official ICS would be cool though.

Hey I am an Android user since G1 too and I am looking from the same perspective.
Here is what I am going to do with this crappy Tab:
I am not going to trash it but I will keep it and hate it.
This will help me remember not to get any heavily customized interface (Touchwiz, sense ... etc) device in the future and waiting 1 year for an update then getting dropped in the second update because my device cannot handle it because of the customization.
Moral: Keep it simple and light.
Can not say install CM instead, as it is not an valid alternative. Don't take me wrong but my level of reliability I am looking for is just higher than that.

True, GalaxyTask ROMs are actually the best ROMs here, which I find disappointing because ICS is a lot lighter than Honeycomb ever was. Even so, apps still lag, and every browser I use crashes.

I have a bad feeling ICS won't save the day either. I have an even worse feeling we'll just be getting ICS after Jellybean is released.

Nexus 7 is calling your name too
Its a shame your experience is so poor with this tab. I love the galaxy tab 10.1, running honeycomb 3.2. I luckily don't experience this lag and never have. I have the US model bought on first release a year ago and I still love it today. Use it for everything these days. Music, movies, streaming all from my WD Live hub, connect to my smart tv via HDMI or wifi direct. My mate bought the galaxy tab 2 10.1 yesterday and running them side by side the tab 2 was even smoother ics is an improvement but with touchwiz looks the same as honeycomb tbh.
Maybe you should take your tab back for a refund and do more research and see if there is something more suited to your needs.

Hey guys , well I was thinking of getting the nexus 7 tablet for my mommy this Christmas. She likes to surf the web, check her email, and read books . Would this tablet be good for her? I was wondering if android would be overwhelming for her to use. She has a galxy s2 skyrocket which she she knows how to use pretty well but touchwiz kind of makes android simpler. it's either this or the kindle....but I love the price of this tablet.

Well my gf got an Android phone about 2 years ago, and still uses it. We got her son (10 yrs old) a N7, and when he's not using it she loves to snatch it up. I love her, but she's not the most tech savvy person, but she figured out the N7 without me having to say anything about it. She's getting on for xmas so she doesn't have to wait for her son to put his down.
I've got a technically inept friend who has a Nexus 7, and he hasn't asked me for help once yet! Android is incredibly easy to use; I'd definitely get her one.
For the money, you won't find a better tablet. Honestly the Nexus 7 is a fantastic product. I'd check whether she would like reading off a traditional screen (I know my mum would hate it), she may prefer a Kindle with the e-ink displays instead.

This was the debate I was having, Kindle or N7...but after seeing how much she loved the N7 (God knows that Amazon's app store is...well...terrible) it was a no brainer.
Awesome I'll pick one up for her! Thanks a lot for the help guys! I really hope she'll love it.... I gave my dad my galaxy s3 last week and he can't put it down lol he calls it " my pocket high definition TV"

As much as Android fanatics (like me) are unimpressed with the switch from the Honeycomb style interface to the "phablet" layout, I think it does make the interface more accessible to non-techie users. Go for it.
Also don't forget that, essentially, for the price of one tablet she is also getting a Nook, a Kindle, a Kobo, etc, because they all have apps that can access native content from those stores.
