Widget resize after update to 4.2.1 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So usually I have a Google music and a Pandora widget on the same row on my home screen. Today I noticed that after rearranging a couple of things, I cannot get either of the 2 widgets to resize. Which I must have been able to do before right? Anyone else notice this?

[Q] Home Screen

Hi
As a complete newcomer to the Android opertaing system forgive me for asking what might be a couple of silly questions!
Firstly, there seems to be a few (three?) home screens. Can I make one of these always appear first when I switch on the Nexus7.
Secondly, when I purchased it a couple of weeks ago there seemed to be a whole host of widgets present, some of which seem to do nothing. Where do these widgets come from and what are they supposed to do. I have tried searching the web for information on this but have come up with nothing that really explains what widgets are.
Any help would be appreciated.
There should be a stock 5 home screens on Jelly Bean. The one in the middle (3rd) will be the default one. This can't be changed unless you use a custom launcher, like Nova Launcher. Then you can play around with them however you like.
As for the widgets question - which widgets are you talking about? As far as I know, there are no widgets which do "nothing"
I am not entirely sure about what you mean when you talk of widgets, but here goes:
Widgets do all sorts of things, from being toggle switches to news widgets. The ones on the screens when yo first get your tablet are Google widgets. If I remember correctly they are mostly play store and media related. You can remove them easily by touching and holding the widget for a second and dragging it to the 'remove' icon that appears on the top of the screen.
Yo can install and remove widgets the same way you would install a program from the play store, widgets can be accessed through the apps menu and dragged onto any of your virtual screens.

Thanks for the information. IT doesn't seem like 5 screens but I will move my icons to it and see if that does the job.
As for the widgets, this may have been covered in the next reply. Some of mine do nothing if I "click" on them and look like web pages or similar.

There are definitely 5 home screens but only 3 have widgets placed on them when you take it out of the box for the first time.

Sorted, thanks. Moved my widgets to the third home screen which now opens by default.

Widget sizes?

First things first, I'm not sure if this is a device issue, an app issue or an o/s issue, but has anyone else come across widgets that take up more room than their intended size?
For example, Cal Widget should be 4x2 (and is that on my sgs2), but actually requires 4x3 space (hopefully the screenshot has been attached). Likewise, the various foursquare widgets seem to be the same. I've also seen a few 4x1 widgets that take up 4x2 space with the actual graphics centred in between the grid lines. In all instances, the resize option doesn't seem to be available.
Has anyone else noticed this, and is there a setting somewhere that I've inadvertently selected to cause this?
(It shouldn't be an issue, other than my OCD about symmetrical homescreen layouts kicking in!)

Try with Nova / Apex and see what happens..
in nova there is a widget overlap option for scenarios like this. then you can long press the widget and if it is overlapping another widget or app.... you will have bring to front and send to back options
Thanks, tried Apex and it at least allowed me to resize the widgets.
I'll keep playing around to see if there's a non-launcher solution though.

[Q] DIsappearing widgets with new Google Launcher on Nexus 7

I have installed the Google Launcher (from Nexus 5) on my Nexus 4, 7 and 10. It seems to work fine on my Nexus 4 (though it clearly not optimised for it, not surprised of course) but I'm finding most of my widgets and some icons have disappeared on my Nexus 7. I spent quite a while setting up quite a few home pages but since then a lot of the pages have completely disappeared and some icons have gone. Also, I'm trying to drag Google Play to the bottom icon line but disappears as soon as move away from the home page and back again. Folders appear OK though.
Anyone else experiencing this? I'm wondering if there is a newer version of the launcher? I can't find anything other than the one originally released.
I'll return to the original launcher on my Nexus 7.

Disappearing Widgets (all of them)

Hi Everybody,
I'm stock unrooted and still waiting for the 6.0.1 update.
Starting yesterday, all of my widgets began just disappearing. I put them back, and and later in the day they're gone again. Three of them on two different home screens.
Anybody experience or heard about this?
I've been having this exact same issue I don't know why but I'll set up my widgets and then at what seems to random times usually days apart the widgets just disappear and I can't readd them to the home screen as they are no longer in the widget selector in the Google launcher. The only thing that fixes it is a reboot and then the widget appear in the selector again and I have set them up again. I'm on 6.0.1 and still getting this issue
Me too. I had the same issue after the 6.0.1 update.

Google Now Cards Disappearing Too?
I am experiencing the same phenomenon with my widgets randomly disappearing on my Nexus 6P running rooted but stock 6.0.1. I thought it might have had something to do with me having Gravity Box installed with Xposed Framework and enabling the "resize any widget" function.
Additionally, all of my Google Now cards disappear and won't reappear unless I disable cards and then reenable them. Anyone having issues with their cards disappearing as well?
Stock 6P on 6.01 and someone keeps swiping my widgets too! Sometimes it's just one other times it's a couple and others it's all of them.
Seriously anyone have any insight into this??

Any update, anyone? This is driving me crazy!
I did a factory data reset and thought this problem was fixed. But then it happened again shortly after I plugged into Android auto. Anyone else using Android auto? Maybe that is the (or a) trigger.
Sounds like a launcher issue to me. I have been using Nova launcher most of the time since I have had my 6P, and I have not experienced it. Sounds like a bug in Google Launcher. If you guys are using Google Launcher, switch to a different launcher, set it as your default, set your apps and widgets up, restart your phone. See if it happens any over the next couple days.
Downloaded Nova launcher and they haven't disappeared since and it's been a day. Fingers crossed. It was happening up to three times a day before.
Update: It is definitely the Google Now launcher causing the issue. It's been several days now and not one widget has disappeared since switching to Nova launcher.

Mine still unpredictably disappear. Sometimes I'll go weeks without incident, and then sometimes I'll have to replace them days in a row. Sometimes just one goes, sometimes all at once. However, without fail my Google Calendar agenda widget remains unaffected. It's always there. I actually switched to it from Event Flow because I don't have to worry about it disappearing, even though the Event Flow widget is way better.
Maybe N will fix this when it finally hits.

I get this on my moto x pure too. Drives me insane. Any stock widget stays, third party vanish
Same issue
Stock galaxy s6 all widgets disapeer after any power down or restart help please?!

Adding a widget reboots my nexus 7

Whenever I go to add an extra widget my nexus 7 keeps rebooting, has anyone seen this before? I have car widget added on the home screen and it takes up all of the space but when i try to add another widget on the next screen over my nexus immediately reboots. I have also deleted the main widget and tried to add another widget but still the same thing happens. I have notice some of the smaller icon sized widget i can add but anything bigger than that it will reboot on adding and it doesn't even add it at all.

You should try another launcher and see what happens.
