[Q] Play video over LAN share with Subtitles - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After trying out different solutions including VLC Direct and trying to avoid Plex, I found my best solution for playing videos from the network on the tablet.
1. Set up an SMB/Samba share on your computer.
2. Connect to the share with ES File Explorer
3. Browse to the video file and open with MX Player.
MX Player works better for me on these files than the built in ES video viewer or the stock Video Player. Also, on the file I tried I got full hardware support in video and audio. I haven't installed any additional codecs, just MX Player itself.
Now, there's only one problem, subtitles don't come in this way.
A workaround would be to first copy the .srt file to the local storage and then open the video file over the network in MX and then add in the subtitles from the local browser in MX Player. But obviously this is a headache to do each time. Anyone know of a better solution?

problem moving video to pc

I have searched all the threads and there are lots of folks that have problems or questions about moving video to their ppc, I want to do the opposite. I have taken some video and want to move it to the PC. When I do that via activesync the video will not play in medio player or quicktime. media player will play the audio not the video. Media player will not recognize the file on the ppc either.
How can I conver the video?
att 8525
try playing it with vlc player link
half way there
The vlc player will show the video, but it does not pick up the audio. I also would like to get this into a format that could be shared easily, so I would still like to convert it.
if you want to convert then i suggest you try www.videohelp.com

[Q] play movie from networked PC on A500

I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive connected to my home PC.
I want to be able to play the movies on my A500 whilst connected to the TV elsewhere in the house (over wifi)
I've played with clearfi with no luck. Is there an app that will allow me to do this easily with just a few clicks ?
Cheerz
I use PS3 Media Server on my PC and Bubble UPNP on my A500. Works great.
Thanks. I'll give them a try later. Will it play .avi files ?
I'm running off Thor's ROM, but I've had no issues streaming avi files via upnp.
The easiest method is BSPlayer, it actually lets you view movies from a shared folder rather than UPnP. You might have some lag with large files, but it does the job better than trying to get UPnP functionality to work 100% of the time.
There are a lot of options for streaming from PC. The easiest I've used so far is ES file explorer and MX video player. Just go to LAN in ES and stream via smb. MX streams/plays all the formats I have thrown at it.
If you have a custom rom with a kernel supporting cifs, you could try cifs manager. It create a shared folder on a specified location. It works great for music too. I can even scan my network shared music library with the stock music player (or other) by creating a shared folder on the sd-card.

For movies, I also recommend MovieBrowser HD, a nice front end that scan your movie library and fetch covers and descriptions, opens with your fav movie player.

Same here, es file explorer and mx or dice works great.
I'd second Diceplayer in a heartbeat if I could actually buy the full version. The trial played everything I threw at it including 720p avi and mkv files.
I just used File Manager HD to browse to folder and BS player to stream, very easy.
I tried a VLC app and it worked pretty well. Just make sure its not the remote app.

I was going to buy the full version but its saying the account is locked or something?
I'm going to spend this weekend trying all the suggestions - thanks
I ran into the same issue. I ended up giving BS Player a shot and it handled 720p mkv and avi files like a dream. Granted, it was playing them off an external HDD, but it's definitely worth a download.
Yes I think that FM HD is the best for LAN connection over wi-fi and xm player. But mx player cannot read subtitles from network drive.
Serviio for the pc (dlna server java software) and skifta on your A500.

How to play rmvb file

Hi,
I'm using ES file Explorer and via LAN I can browse my desk top computer hard drive. When I click any of the rmvb file, it only can be played by either ES Media Player or Movies. I already install other apps name "rockplayer" that can play rmvb, but how to force KF not using the default software and can use the other software to play the rmvb? The ES file explorer is good that I not need to copy the video file into KF, just through the network to watch the movie. Can anyone advise how to play video file through LAN?
i'm using es file explorer with mx video player for streaming movies
selected mx as default - works perfect for me
I too am using es file explorer and it works perfect

My problem is when I click the rmvb file through network, it only pop up either ES Media Player or Movies. I have no choice to select other player. I don't see mx as default.

Video player for kindle fire

I have new kindle fire in original form. I have not rooted it or made any changes. Can i use any video player like VLC or mobo player ?
I tried to download VLC and MX player , but are not working on my kindle.
please let me know any video player to use without rooting my kindle.
thanks in advance for all your help.
MOBO player is the answer
sideloaded it as soon as i got my Fire. Copy videos into whatever folder you want - presumbably "videos" folder, using USB connect to PC
ON you Fire, use File Expert or ES File Explorer to browse to file and play it.
ALSO, if you set up your WiFi and share you media folder on your PC, File Expert can browse to it and play you media files, using MOBO. you may be asked to open file with a browser [i think ES file explorer does that] just click ok and it will open in MOBO
with that and Netflix, i'm using my fire to watch videos all the time!
I tried rockplayer and BSPlayer, they both work fine, but you need to select software rendering, otherwise you can't watch videos.
I'm on stock 6.2.2 and MX Player works fine for me. I also use MoboPlayer.
I have tried MX player, Rockplayer, VLC for Android (alpha) and others I don't even remember now. All of them got freeze while watching mkv files.
Now finally happy with QQPlayer. Available free from market I can run all of my mkv/avi files without any problem.
KF can play 1080p & 720p very smooth no loop with GPU POWERVR SGX540 decoder. You can use stock, mobo, or mx player.
But:
With HW decode, you have to re-encode the video with the following link:

Apps to stream from network hard drive and support subtitle files

One of the main reasons I bought the Nexus Player was so I can watch videos from my network hard drive. I have been doing this in the past with my WD TV Live but it's now very slow although still does the job well.
I just got the Nexus Player today but after playing around a little I finally figured out I can access my network hard drive with ES File Explorer, although it's a little cumbersome, and load the videos there. However, the built-in media player along with Archo and MX all can not play audio from MKV files. VLC was able to play audio from MKV files but for some reason it refuse to load external subtitle files, only those built-in to the MKV file.
Anyone have any suggestions to alternatives? On my Nexus 9 I use BS Player to both access my videos on my network hard drive and watch but unfortunately it isn't available for the Nexus Player AFAIK.
Thanks in advance.
Kodi is in the Play Store now, it works quite well as UpNP.
My main solution for this issue in my house is to install Plex on my server and pay for the 5 bucks for the Plex app on the TV.
Also after you do this you can set an external player (like MX player) to be the player instead of Plex.
MX has been playing MKV files for me after You turn on hardware+ encoder.
Thanks for the replies.
After trying a few apps, I ended up using Archos Player with the extra codecs, all free. Essentially it works like BSPlayer like I'm used to and works perfectly. :good:
