I have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive connected to my home PC.
I want to be able to play the movies on my A500 whilst connected to the TV elsewhere in the house (over wifi)
I've played with clearfi with no luck. Is there an app that will allow me to do this easily with just a few clicks ?

I use PS3 Media Server on my PC and Bubble UPNP on my A500. Works great.

I'm running off Thor's ROM, but I've had no issues streaming avi files via upnp.
The easiest method is BSPlayer, it actually lets you view movies from a shared folder rather than UPnP. You might have some lag with large files, but it does the job better than trying to get UPnP functionality to work 100% of the time.
There are a lot of options for streaming from PC. The easiest I've used so far is ES file explorer and MX video player. Just go to LAN in ES and stream via smb. MX streams/plays all the formats I have thrown at it.
If you have a custom rom with a kernel supporting cifs, you could try cifs manager. It create a shared folder on a specified location. It works great for music too. I can even scan my network shared music library with the stock music player (or other) by creating a shared folder on the sd-card.

For movies, I also recommend MovieBrowser HD, a nice front end that scan your movie library and fetch covers and descriptions, opens with your fav movie player.

Same here, es file explorer and mx or dice works great.
I'd second Diceplayer in a heartbeat if I could actually buy the full version. The trial played everything I threw at it including 720p avi and mkv files.
I just used File Manager HD to browse to folder and BS player to stream, very easy.
I tried a VLC app and it worked pretty well. Just make sure its not the remote app.

I ran into the same issue. I ended up giving BS Player a shot and it handled 720p mkv and avi files like a dream. Granted, it was playing them off an external HDD, but it's definitely worth a download.
Yes I think that FM HD is the best for LAN connection over wi-fi and xm player. But mx player cannot read subtitles from network drive.
Serviio for the pc (dlna server java software) and skifta on your A500.

why wouldn't my streamer apps (UPNP, Skifta, clear.fi etc.) not detect the mp4 files I am putting into my servers shared video folder? The apps see a my other video files, like the avi files and mpg files, but none of my mp4's show up.
Does that make any sense? Does UPNP ignore mp4 files? yet it seems like everyone converts their files to mp4 (which by the way play ok on the device if I attach and play through usb.).
I just want to convert everything to something that I can both stream and put on hard drive and take with me...
I have a network share on my win7 machine that has videos in divx and xvid.
What is the best way for me to access those files from my tf101 so I can watch them directly from the pc without copying it onto tf101 first?
Also, what media player could play them?

I was just messing around but I watched vids from my TF that were located on my laptop via the "my cloud" app on the TF....it's the sub app called "splashtop" and it worked just fine....
upnplay app with moboplayer. Set up media streaming in windows7's media player. There should be instructions if you Google it.
Ive used plex and it seemed to play most of my videos fine.

This is the combo I use and it works a charm, however plex,splashtop etc will work also. Try them all because its down to preference...

Very few videos will play correctly due to honeycomb issues, but cifs works well. I suppose you could set up real time transcoding if you had a comp with enough power. Includinb dgnvdec somewhere in the decoding chain would work well for those with nvidia cards - as that would perform all resizing/decoding/deinterlacing via gpu, freeing up cpu to handle the smaller encode. I'm pretty sure the default movie player can handle many different transports.

seems like it has to load the whole video before u can "stream" it??? takes a long time to serve up a 2gb file

tried that and it says no player (i have moboplayer etc installed). if i then choose 'open as' and video is starts copying the whole file across ??
File Manager HD downloads the whole file, it doesn't support streaming AFAIK.
I use GMote and Moboplayer (for vids). Audio can be played directly in GMote. Works great.
Whats the best way to steam? Both ES and FileHD makes me download to cache which defeats the purpose of networking. If I use N speed would the download be faster?

Plex will actually only transcode if it needs to, if it doesn't it'll simply stream the original media AFAIK. I use it and love it. It's probably one of the easiest ways to get this set up, especially if you want remote access from outside of your intranet.
For .mpeg/avi streaming:
File Expert -> Dolphin Browser HD -> VPlayer
Can use MoboPlayer or RockPlayer instead of VPlayer, but seeking with VPlayer is better imho. Other file types may work...
mounted my network share in CIFS and play natively with mobo.... for the files that aren't supported by hardware playback, you can long press the file in mobo and use software decoding.

Im new to xoom guys. I used to play video files with opening them in astro file manager with smb. Seems smb is not working in astro, tried also on desire hd, but on my hd2 with core droid works fine. The other file managers are preferching the files to my tablet, so takes a long time to watch even a few hundred megs movie... how could i mount my network shares onto my xoom?
Another issue is with mkvs, no sound, onli the movie, moboplayer, factory video player either... any ideas for the above issues? Tks in advance guys.
Drop SMB and go with splashtop HD. Well worth the five dollars. Your desktop does the processing and streams the video and sound to the xoom.

Ok, in th meantime i found the best video player, named dice player. 3 bucks, but this worths. No need to convert your hd movies anymore. Matroska + ac3 is working very well. Just tap on any mkv file and will pla it smooth. The video encoding is done by the hw and sound by pure cpu, but with dual core it's working fantastic.
Still no info on any smb program which wud work without prefetching... any ideas?

I think he said that he couldn't get mobo to play MKV's over the network without either copying the whole file to the Xoom first, or not getting audio.
You can use cifsmanager to mount network shares. Also, Astro has a module to read SMB shares. It's a separate download in the market.
Cifs is the way to go. It'll treat the shares as local folders and open the files accordingly without buffering.
Do a search around here for the cifs.ko and instructions on how to use it.
Also, I'm going to check out Dice player to see if it'll play high profile mkv.
I tested Dice Player last night with some HP 720 mkvs. Some minor hiccups on a few files but it played great. I play all my media off of twonky server on a linux machine.
I'm definitely thinking of buying the full version. I wanted CorePlayer to come out, but seems like that isn't going to happen. Wasn't impressed with moboplayer or rockplayer, and mx player didn't even register to open mkv's for me.

Astro smb is working only on froyo, not on gingerbread or honeycomb.

Mobo and others cannot handle ac3.... so now i dont have to convert my regular shows into mp4..
I checked these cif managers. I dont want to root my device..... i dont want to wipe my data and restore everything

Well... I think you're out of luck then unfortunately. If you NEED this to be SMB and can't use a media server like Twonky or a streaming option like Splashtop then you'll need to root I think.
ES File Explorer recently added SMB streaming capability. Works fine on my Xoom, I can browse to a WHS network share via ES, and when I tap a video file, it asks me which video program I want to play it back through... Works great for AVI's for me, but I was having trouble getting MKV's to work right. I'll have to try this Dice player.
Tried es file explorer both on my xoom and sensation. On the phone es file exp offers the possibility to choose player or set one as default. On my xoom the factory player starts but nothing happens since cannot handle mkvs. I cannot chose dice, not even with open as video or other stuff. How can i delete default video player from my xoom? I cannot even find any factory playback **** in application manage(((
Maybe clear data for ES on the xoom or failing that uninstall and reinstall?

I read and read and still not sure what the best approach is for streaming media (mp3, flac, mkv) to the N7 on the LAN from a Win7 PC. Any server software you could recommend that could potentially do transcoding on the fly if needed, with caching so that it happens only the first time a file is played and then maybe even be able to copy the transcoded/cached file to the internal N7 storage for offline playback?
And is MX Player the player to use on N7?

Have you tried iMediaShare? MX Player is probably the best player out there right now.
From the description of the app, I'm not sure how iMediaShare helps me. I'm looking to stream media files stored on a Win7 PC to my N7.
BSplayer has lan function and will stream any videos from any windows shares.ESfile explorer will let you veiw,stream or edit any files on your window shares.You don't need anything on your computer as long as it is setup for sharing on home network.Both of these work great and have been updated for 4.2.
^^this. I use es file explorer as a back end to access my media on the PC. Doing it this way allows you to use pretty much any media player software for the nexus that you prefer.
My current favourite is dice player.

Using ES File Explorer I can only get my shares to appear if I turn off my firewall (zonealarm). Can anyone confirm what I need to change to allow my phone to connect with zonealarm on?

bubble up you can change where the files are rendered . it will also push thru the network from the share thru tablet and play on tv . can play file formats on the tv its not compatible with

I use xmbc media player ..its just perfect and no one is even close..its same as pc version and you cam find it here on xda for free

xmbc on N7 is just perfect ..i use it since i bought N7 ...my 1000+ movies perfecty organisle and always ready to play from pc on my n7

I recommend qloud media. It's free on the store and you can stream music pics and films from your computer. It works over 3g, local and remote wireless. Amazing I can watch my stuff at work during lunch and what not.

Wow, you're right crappy description of the app. The app does exactly what you want that's why recommended it. It's streams music and movies, using upnp servers on the computer side, like Windows Media Player and PS3 Media Server.
Next problem: any way to mount and play ISO files over the network? They are DVD rips and would like to avoid converting them. Any apps that act as a DVD player on the N7, able to mount the DVD ISO over the network?

Are you saying BS Player can mount ISOs made from DVDs and act as a DVD player? If so, any pointers where to look? I tried it and it didn't seem to be able to do anything with ISO files.
One of the main reasons I bought the Nexus Player was so I can watch videos from my network hard drive. I have been doing this in the past with my WD TV Live but it's now very slow although still does the job well.
I just got the Nexus Player today but after playing around a little I finally figured out I can access my network hard drive with ES File Explorer, although it's a little cumbersome, and load the videos there. However, the built-in media player along with Archo and MX all can not play audio from MKV files. VLC was able to play audio from MKV files but for some reason it refuse to load external subtitle files, only those built-in to the MKV file.
Anyone have any suggestions to alternatives? On my Nexus 9 I use BS Player to both access my videos on my network hard drive and watch but unfortunately it isn't available for the Nexus Player AFAIK.

Kodi is in the Play Store now, it works quite well as UpNP.
My main solution for this issue in my house is to install Plex on my server and pay for the 5 bucks for the Plex app on the TV.
Also after you do this you can set an external player (like MX player) to be the player instead of Plex.
MX has been playing MKV files for me after You turn on hardware+ encoder.
