Well,
My favorite is Stock + Custom Kernel + True Tablet Mode patch.
I dont like Parandroid because the Tablet Mode was kind of gllitchy on my side. Maybe fixed in v2, I'vnt tried it.
The most used Rom is probably CM10.
But there is no better rom then other, it all depends on your need.
Codename Android.

I was wondering where to start... i flashed Trinity Kernel saturday night, so now its a slippery slope to a custom rom.. i'm on stock at the moment.. if i flash a rom does it wipe everything on the device? music etc on the sd card? i can easilly enough install the apps again i have..
if i flash a new rom im guessing it will have its own kernel so i would need to install my own choice again?

You can backup your apps with Titanium Backup. A full wipe/factory reset will wipe your apps, but will not wipe /sdcard. So, all your music etc should be safe.
If you flash a custom rom then yes, you will have the kernel that comes with it. You can flash a different one if you'd like.

You can also specify tablet/phone mode fo any app you have, and change the dpi.

Nexus 7 rom to remember....
I personally like Codename Android, haven't had a problem. I tried few other roms and i always have a problem with nfl rewind app i cant seem to fast foward or rewind. Even the latest aokp rom build 2. Don't have that issue with Codename, its a great rom.

Paranoid Android suits all my needs. I did some tweaks though.
Using motley_noGPUoc_1.1.1 Kernel. In combination with Jay's tweaks my N7 runs incredibly smooth and stable.
You might encounter a weird 'screen black out' issue - flash this if you're using a CM10 based ROM like Paranoid Android.
And I'm using Apex launcher.. but this is just my personal preference.
I agree with the other posts, Paranoid is wonderful. Using the hybrid mode and the ability to set a custom DPI per application really makes things look great on the Nexus 7.
Someone had said to me why flash a custom rom if you have a nexus device which has the same user interface.
I was using Cyanogenmod on mine then I flashed back to stock and just set Apex Launcher on top of it.

You could also try this ROM which is a combination of Paranoid Android and Codename Android. I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Yes. You can be rooted and stay on the stock ROM.

I can root withouth unlocking right?
Because my Nexus 7 has a bunch of family videos and I would not like to lose them, so how can I back them up, I have that Toolkit v2.0, does it have a backup option, and if so what exactly do I need to backup, is it the normal type backup or the NANDROID type?

No, you have to unlock to root. I don't believe that a nandroid backs up media files like videos, but I could be wrong. I thought the toolkit by Wugfresh had a "backup media files" option. I'm pretty sure you can use ADB to backup files as well.
Sorry I'm not much help. When I unlocked my boot loader and rooted I didn't have any files I wanted so I didn't back up my N7.
Maybe someone with more experience can answer your question.

i am on PA and its an outstanding ROM. I am tempted to try Cookies&Cream too.
I'm currently using AndroidME CM10 N7 1.0.0 and I absolutely love it. Works fast and without problems.
I'm trying Kaos Droid 3.6.1, and so far has been very smooth for me. Has many options at install to choose from. Waiting for 3.7 to be fixed though, get endless boot with that version.

Is your new ROM on your replacement N7 since you erased for boot loader and bricked your last one?
I personally like using eclipse rom.
Just wondering how many people here use and/or like to use MultiROM. I'm debating whether I should try it. Who has had problems installing it? Also, any issues such as lag or an excess of internal SD space used?

In my opinion... It's one of the best Android projects I've come across. I have a 32 gig N7, and with the extra space, it's easy to try out various ROM's (3 or 4), Linux (2 right now) , and even WebOS all while keeping the stock (rooted and kexec kernel of course) intact.

Excellent work by the op tassadar of multirom. For me the linux side is not essential I use it to test and use different roms. Also I have a clean stock unrooted Rom that I can boot to so I can use some essential apps that you can't use on a rooted Rom.....especially movie streaming apps...flixster, skygo etc.....i did try to use root hider apps but they did not work. Great project and well maintained but more importantly easy to setup.......

I've been using it since V4 and love it. Some of the roms run smoother than others but that really depends on the kernel you use. I'm pretty sure all the major kernel devs have added support for multirom. I don't even use my "Internal" rom anymore. I switch between Ubuntu and ParanoidRom all the time now. I highly recommend it for testing out different roms!

The best part, since its a Google/Nexus device, it's easy to revert back to stock.
Installed it about an hour ago. Confusing at first but now I love it.

Well, my Nexus 10 is in the mail direct from Google! Believe it or not, they were actually the cheapest source for the 16GB model. I not worried about storage space since I have 32GB now on my phone and max out at about 4GB.
At any rate, I am both excited and nervous. I have had a Samsung Nexus phone for about a year and super happy; however I have read horror stories about this tablet (not connecting to WiFi, random reboots, etc.). So, where should I start?
If anyone can give me a bullet point list of the best ROM, kernel, GApps, etc I'd appreciate it!!
AOKP and Pa are the best ROMs for me, combined with trinity 10 or Kt kernel
This is by far the best tablet I have owned.

There are several aokp builds. The normal one a couple pub ones which are great and the one I use from ktoonsez and task650 so you have choices for your choices

This is our first tablet so I got a 3yr warranty with full accident coverage from Squaretrade. They issue you a check for your original purchase price if you break it anytime in that 3yrs.

Every phone I have had that has both an available AOKP and CM rom always wins hands-down when running AOKP. I'll keep flashing a CM10 rom every 2 or three months to see if they have improved, but within a day I am back on AOKP. Will stick with it until I see CM catch up and surpass AOKP. Thanks everyone! It arrives tomorrow...almost called in sick (ha, not).

I thought aokp was based off cm10?
I personally use sentinel ROM. It doesn't have all the aokp features and it uses the crappy new ui BUT it seems to be the most stable especially since I use my tablet and ps3 controller to play games all day. If anyone has a better ROM to try I'm open to suggestions

I understand your concern, I was the same before I bought mine not too long ago, but I had to have it. And to be honest I was very pleasantly surprized I was only on stock for a week or so, but I dont think I ever experienced a random reboot, and I don't have any issues at all with the screen or WiFi.
I've tried a few ROMs and kernels like CyanogenMod and Paranoid, but right now I'm running AOKP Project Unicorn Butter from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095222 , but it looks like you're already familiar with AOKP It has been the smoothest, snappiest ROM so far, and if you run it with the KTManta kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015874 , its the best android experience you'll have ever had. I know it's mine.
Thank you everyone - Last question: What's all the buzz about "Aroma"? What exactly is it? Is it worth flashing?
Aroma is just an installer. It comes up when you flash certain ROMs etc. Allows you to install several things right there before booting add launcher/apps/etc

You just flash it in twrp. Same for custom ROMs. Download whichever one you want to use. Flash it. They overwrite any existing kernel. Can't use more than one

Thanks iamikon! I've read where people say to always wipe two caches after something like this, can you/someome clarify that aspet?
-I would guess I do that when I flash a new kernal

Do you all recommend twrp? I have been using CWRTouch 6.0.2.3 on my phone since it came out w/o any problems so I flashed the Nexus 10 version to the tablet and it works great. The only thing I am missing is 'wipe battery stats' but everything else is there.
Any reason to use twrp instead?

since you are coming from franco kernel, this is what you should do, via your recovery..
after you download what you need, reflash your rom(dont wipe a singe thing), the gapps(if needed), and then trinity kernel. then reboot. if you are coming from any other kernel, you dont need to reflash your rom, just flash the kernel in recovery then reboot

no matter what anyone tells you, you NEVER have to wipe anything when flashing kernels, dont wipe dalvik, dont wipe cache.
well, its best to flash your rom again if coming from franco kernel, it changes your roms ramdisk. trinity grabs the available ramdisk. by reflashing your rom, trinity would grab your roms ramdisk instead of francos. but, most likely youll be fine just flashing trinity on top

I'm exactly where you are, stock ROM (4.2.2) and Franco's. It's not that I'm not satisfied with it, just wanting to try alternatives. After being a "ROM whore" with my previous phones I unfortunately didn't have time to do anything with the N4 yet..

OK here is the update, I never got around to install it because I think there is no 4.3 kernel available as yet. All is see is a kernel for 4.2.2
If I am wrong then someone point me to 4.3 kernel for Trinity

i do all of trinitys testing, morfic(dev) doesnt have a nexus 4. this is the kernel that we are testing in the thread right now, publicly. the release kernel goes on the website. the test kernels deemed fit for the public ill post in the thread, and/or my social websites. if you cant find the latest, or have any other questions(even not kernel related), feel free to ask, we are very friendly in the trinity thread

But screen flickers like really bad and not at all buttery smooth...

go to the roms main settings, developer options, force gpu rendering, disable the disable hw overlays if they are enabled. if you dont have a developer options in your main settings, press about phone, scroll down, press build number 7 times. when you get the you are a developer now message, go back to the main settings and go into developer options.
the reason this happens is because you are running stock, which is jwr(build version) and aosp is jss. they are slightly different(some different drivers). this difference cause this. most custom kernels are jss, aosp based. franco kernel is jwr, stock based. this difference does not happen often on a nexus. btw, jss is the newest version of android. the majority of custom roms are also jss.

This fixed my problem but I hope this doesn't have any other effect ..

na, thats how i normally run my phone. there are many aosp builds out there in both development sections, as i said most are aosp. im using rasbean, but there are other good aosp based roms as well

One last thing i like to inquire is that to install the raspberry, they recommend clean wipe and then install gapps and rom. Would this erase my current backup of franco based system image i created in TWRP?
And If I wipe clean, how can I install the raspberry rom ..its all wiped isnt it!!!
Thanks @xthaparian and @simms22, I had already decided to take this weekend to try some stuff on mine, but your tries made me more forward to do it. I must confess of all my past androids N4 is, for obvious reasons, the one which has more releases to try, and ofc a lot of tricks in the way..

no, your nandroid backup stays, your data gets erased though. its like starting fresh. the storage wont get touched(dont wipe the system). as soon as you log in, go through the google setup, your play store apps should start reinstalling(if you enable it). most roms will jave this or something similar written in the op.

i hear people say these gapps for 4.3 are good, they were recently updated(8/8/13) http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/gapps/pa_gapps-full-4.3-20130808-signed.zip

Let's see the performance .
One thing I noticed is that this kernel jas all 4 cores running and max is capped at 1024hz.
Also the governor is set to ondemand.
Any thoughts on this. Any other tweaks I should do to make it much better. Franco kernel was using interactive governor.
Also the GPU is ocd to 485 and stock is 400 max.
Any comments to tweak the kernel better or Tue stock setting are good!
