Best nexus 7 rom - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Witch is the top #1 rom for Nexus 7, 'like the cm10 for the tab2' THE BEST OF THE BEST
thx a lot

It comes down to preference..... I like Paranoid Android personally.

Another vote for Paranoid Android.
But this needs to be said: there is no best ROM. Try all of them until you find one you like.
Have fun on your journey of ROM discovery.

Rasbean Jelly!
At least thats the one that my Seven is diggin' on :silly:

Well,
My favorite is Stock + Custom Kernel + True Tablet Mode patch.
I dont like Parandroid because the Tablet Mode was kind of gllitchy on my side. Maybe fixed in v2, I'vnt tried it.
The most used Rom is probably CM10.
But there is no better rom then other, it all depends on your need.

Codename Android.

AOKP...but that's the only one I've tried. I'm going to flash more tomorrow. Its too late now...damn work tomorrow. Going to flash PA for sure, and one other.

I was wondering where to start... i flashed Trinity Kernel saturday night, so now its a slippery slope to a custom rom.. i'm on stock at the moment.. if i flash a rom does it wipe everything on the device? music etc on the sd card? i can easilly enough install the apps again i have..
if i flash a new rom im guessing it will have its own kernel so i would need to install my own choice again?
cheers,
mick

You can backup your apps with Titanium Backup. A full wipe/factory reset will wipe your apps, but will not wipe /sdcard. So, all your music etc should be safe.
If you flash a custom rom then yes, you will have the kernel that comes with it. You can flash a different one if you'd like.

What's the most vanilla ICS rom for Note?

Hello,
How are you?
I am a bit tired of Touchwiz and some lag on the phone, so I would like to switch ROMS.
So, I was wondering what is the most pure vanilla ICS 4.0.4 ROM for the Note, wich is stable and has the fewest know issues?
I am sorry for this thread, but there are so many roms developed that it is really hard to choose.
CHeers and thanks!

Well, Paranoid Android is a fantastic ROM for the Samsung Galaxy Note, as it offers a near-ICS experience that allows for both tablet and phone modes. Try it out!

Thank you for the suggestion.
Do I need to flash a modded kernel for that rom?
Or does it work stable and fast with stock GB kernel?

For an ICS ROM you need to use an ICS kernel. But Paranoid comes packaged with the kernel. By the sound of it you are on GB at the moment. If it's already rooted, do a full wipe then flash Paranoid and the GApps package from the same thread.
If you are already on ICS, do not do full wipe until you have read up on how to do it.

Any downsides to this ROM?
I am currently on stock Note, with ICS 4.0.3 and stock kernel. Not rooted.
Would a kernel like Speedmod work better with the nightly rom? Or is a stock GB kernel better?
Whichever rom I choose, I need to use PC Odin to revert to GB before flashing anything, right?
Cheers and thanks!
Why would anyone use cm9 If Paranoid Android is the same with much more features..
You cant use any tw kernels like speedmod. Cm9 need cm9 kernels
can i install Paranoid Android from ICS through Abyss 4.2 kernel ?

So the best way would be PC Odin to stock GB, full wipe then install Paranoid?
Would that give the best performance?

You can install it from ics if you want.
download Abyss Kernel 4.2
copy Kernel and PA Rom and Gapps Files to your internal SDCard
boot into Recovery
Flash Abyss Kernel 4.2
boot back in Recovery (to find under "advanced")
Factory Reset
Wipe Dalvik Cache (under "advanced")
Flash PA Rom
Flash GAPPS

You can use modded kernels with PA, but only cm based ones like AniDroid/bbq etc.. and not the touchwiz ones like speedmod/franco.
To install, follow what the post above says, or as you mentioned use Odin to go back to gb, root/install cwm, full wipe then install Paranoid Android.

As stated above cm9 only uses cm9 based kernel, you don't have to worry about that, it will install itself when you flash the ROM.

Because not everyone like tablet mod, I've tried PA but returned to cm9 because the phone UI is more suitable for the note .
And then there is the faster update cycle of cm9.

Just my two cents: I found PA to be super buggy in comparison to CM9, the boot splash didn't fit the screen and the UI lagged a lot more, some of the apps were great in tablet mode, but CM9 feels overall far more suited to the Note.

If you want a true Vanilla experience install the 4.04 Stock Rom, you will find the there are now a lot of people using it, it is stable, fast and the battery life has improved. There is a large difference between 4.03 and 4.04 official ROMS.
I have been using it since it came out and I find that it beats everything else I have tried. On the down side the 4.04 kernel still contains the EMMC Bug so I cannot do a full wipe without reverting back to GB.

Best ROM in your opinion on the nexus 7?

HELP! I am trying to root and install a custom ROM for the first time, I need some options. Thanks for looking.
Nexus 7 ultimate eye awaker!
Get paranoid android. Thats the best for me as you can have tablet mode without breaking the market or apps
You can also specify tablet/phone mode fo any app you have, and change the dpi.
Very good, solid ROM too
Nexus 7 rom to remember....
I personally like Codename Android, haven't had a problem. I tried few other roms and i always have a problem with nfl rewind app i cant seem to fast foward or rewind. Even the latest aokp rom build 2. Don't have that issue with Codename, its a great rom.

Paranoid Android suits all my needs. I did some tweaks though.
Using motley_noGPUoc_1.1.1 Kernel. In combination with Jay's tweaks my N7 runs incredibly smooth and stable.
You might encounter a weird 'screen black out' issue - flash this if you're using a CM10 based ROM like Paranoid Android.
And I'm using Apex launcher.. but this is just my personal preference.
I agree with the other posts, Paranoid is wonderful. Using the hybrid mode and the ability to set a custom DPI per application really makes things look great on the Nexus 7.
Someone had said to me why flash a custom rom if you have a nexus device which has the same user interface.
I was using Cyanogenmod on mine then I flashed back to stock and just set Apex Launcher on top of it.

I can root withouth unlocking right?
Because my Nexus 7 has a bunch of family videos and I would not like to lose them, so how can I back them up, I have that Toolkit v2.0, does it have a backup option, and if so what exactly do I need to backup, is it the normal type backup or the NANDROID type?
Thanks

No, you have to unlock to root. I don't believe that a nandroid backs up media files like videos, but I could be wrong. I thought the toolkit by Wugfresh had a "backup media files" option. I'm pretty sure you can use ADB to backup files as well.
Sorry I'm not much help. When I unlocked my boot loader and rooted I didn't have any files I wanted so I didn't back up my N7.
Maybe someone with more experience can answer your question.

i am on PA and its an outstanding ROM. I am tempted to try Cookies&Cream too.
I'm currently using AndroidME CM10 N7 1.0.0 and I absolutely love it. Works fast and without problems.
I'm trying Kaos Droid 3.6.1, and so far has been very smooth for me. Has many options at install to choose from. Waiting for 3.7 to be fixed though, get endless boot with that version.

Best Advice for New Nexus 10 Owner

Well, my Nexus 10 is in the mail direct from Google! Believe it or not, they were actually the cheapest source for the 16GB model. I not worried about storage space since I have 32GB now on my phone and max out at about 4GB.
At any rate, I am both excited and nervous. I have had a Samsung Nexus phone for about a year and super happy; however I have read horror stories about this tablet (not connecting to WiFi, random reboots, etc.). So, where should I start?
If anyone can give me a bullet point list of the best ROM, kernel, GApps, etc I'd appreciate it!!
AOKP and Pa are the best ROMs for me, combined with trinity 10 or Kt kernel
This is by far the best tablet I have owned.

Every phone I have had that has both an available AOKP and CM rom always wins hands-down when running AOKP. I'll keep flashing a CM10 rom every 2 or three months to see if they have improved, but within a day I am back on AOKP. Will stick with it until I see CM catch up and surpass AOKP. Thanks everyone! I understand your concern, I was the same before I bought mine not too long ago, but I had to have it. And to be honest I was very pleasantly surprized I was only on stock for a week or so, but I dont think I ever experienced a random reboot, and I don't have any issues at all with the screen or WiFi.
I've tried a few ROMs and kernels like CyanogenMod and Paranoid, but right now I'm running AOKP Project Unicorn Butter from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095222 , but it looks like you're already familiar with AOKP It has been the smoothest, snappiest ROM so far, and if you run it with the KTManta kernel from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2015874 , its the best android experience you'll have ever had. I know it's mine.

Official AOKP or CyanogenMod. Once you get a feel for either one then go for a custom version of said ROM. Both are pretty stable and bug free.

If going for CyanogenMod, I'd suggest also going for a "M" build (I think M2 is still the latest). I'd avoid nightly builds until your a bit more comfortable with different custom ROM's and stuff.
I'd start with CleanROM, which is basicially stock plus performance enhancements. Then, as you want to try more features, move on to AOKP.
I'd also recommend EOS ROM. Great ROM for features and stability.
One of the best things about android for most devices is the ability to flash custom roms and this device has a lot of options. Most popular roms will have most amount of posts. Make sure the Rom is for your device read the original post and follow install instructions and you should be ok... Be careful though... it can be addicting and will increase the amount of time reading posts on this site.
Personally I use task650's AOKP for the stability, battery life and customizable options

The replies you already received are all very good. I would like to add one more suggestion. Use your a recovery program either CWM or TWRP to perform a nandroid backup of you current working device is a MUST. If you run into problems you can also restore it and instantly return to a working state. That technic can also allow you to try/save/restore a number of ROMs.
When you find the one you want to use as your daily driver just delete the redeundant nandroid backups. A word of caution is that you should always leave one stable nandroid backup on your device "just-in-case" things go bad.
Be aware that if you switch recovery programs (e.g. CWM to TWRP) your backups under the previous recovery program may no longer work. So after you switch, make a new nandoid backup. I believe the recovery developers are working on resolving this limitation but I would take a new backup to be sure.

[Q] Changing Kernel from Franco to Trinity

since you are coming from franco kernel, this is what you should do, via your recovery..
after you download what you need, reflash your rom(dont wipe a singe thing), the gapps(if needed), and then trinity kernel. then reboot. if you are coming from any other kernel, you dont need to reflash your rom, just flash the kernel in recovery then reboot
Thanks a lot
So in this case I should just install trinity kernel as I don't have any custom rom installed and no gapps. I hope I am right as all I did was just installed Franco kernel on stock phone and that's it!
Any cache erase etc etc before i flash new kernel?

no matter what anyone tells you, you NEVER have to wipe anything when flashing kernels, dont wipe dalvik, dont wipe cache.
well, its best to flash your rom again if coming from franco kernel, it changes your roms ramdisk. trinity grabs the available ramdisk. by reflashing your rom, trinity would grab your roms ramdisk instead of francos. but, most likely youll be fine just flashing trinity on top
Thanks again
When you say ROM, are you referring to stock ROM?
I guess I'm getting confused between which ROM you are asking me to reflash.

Hi
I am new to this and recently installed franco kernel on 4.3 Jelly Bean. I was wondering how do I change to Trinity kernel from TWRP menu I have installed on Nexus 4. I understand that I need Zip and then from TWRP I can install, but can anyone you has done it advice me?
I am looking for what I need to do in TWRP?
I am looking whether I need to go back to stock Google Kernel?

xthaparian, can I ask you to share your experience when you do it?
I'm exactly where you are, stock ROM (4.2.2) and Franco's. It's not that I'm not satisfied with it, just wanting to try alternatives. After being a "ROM whore" with my previous phones I unfortunately didn't have time to do anything with the N4 yet..
Thanks =)

OK here is the update, I never got around to install it because I think there is no 4.3 kernel available as yet. All is see is a kernel for 4.2.2
If I am wrong then someone point me to 4.3 kernel for Trinity

i do all of trinitys testing, morfic(dev) doesnt have a nexus 4. this is the kernel that we are testing in the thread right now, publicly. the release kernel goes on the website. the test kernels deemed fit for the public ill post in the thread, and/or my social websites. if you cant find the latest, or have any other questions(even not kernel related), feel free to ask, we are very friendly in the trinity thread
Ooh
Installed it from twrp without wiping cache etc and installed good.
But screen flickers like really bad and not at all buttery smooth...

go to the roms main settings, developer options, force gpu rendering, disable the disable hw overlays if they are enabled. if you dont have a developer options in your main settings, press about phone, scroll down, press build number 7 times. when you get the you are a developer now message, go back to the main settings and go into developer options.
the reason this happens is because you are running stock, which is jwr(build version) and aosp is jss. they are slightly different(some different drivers). this difference cause this. most custom kernels are jss, aosp based. franco kernel is jwr, stock based. this difference does not happen often on a nexus. btw, jss is the newest version of android. the majority of custom roms are also jss.
OK this is what I have done
I have dine as you had told and checked the box that states "disable the he overlays"
This fixed my problem but I hope this doesn't have any other effect ..
How can I install the aosp built instead of jwr ?

na, thats how i normally run my phone. there are many aosp builds out there in both development sections, as i said most are aosp. im using rasbean, but there are other good aosp based roms as well
Thanks a lot all!..
this seems to work.
One last thing i like to inquire is that to install the raspberry, they recommend clean wipe and then install gapps and rom. Would this erase my current backup of franco based system image i created in TWRP?
And If I wipe clean, how can I install the raspberry rom ..its all wiped isnt it!!!
Thanks @xthaparian and @simms22, I had already decided to take this weekend to try some stuff on mine, but your tries made me more forward to do it. I must confess of all my past androids N4 is, for obvious reasons, the one which has more releases to try, and ofc a lot of tricks in the way..

rasbean jelly! :silly:
no, your nandroid backup stays, your data gets erased though. its like starting fresh. the storage wont get touched(dont wipe the system). as soon as you log in, go through the google setup, your play store apps should start reinstalling(if you enable it). most roms will jave this or something similar written in the op.
Ok Thanks again..
BTW which gapps should I use!...
i found a link on the internet
http://www.teamandroid.com/gapps/
but simms22 your input shall be the final thing to close the thread..

i hear people say these gapps for 4.3 are good, they were recently updated(8/8/13) http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/gapps/pa_gapps-full-4.3-20130808-signed.zip
also, you will need the latest supersu/superuser. heres the flashable supersu http://download.chainfire.eu/345/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.51.zip
I downloaded all as instructed ..
I am on raspberry
I'm on trinity kernel
Let's see the performance .
One thing I noticed is that this kernel jas all 4 cores running and max is capped at 1024hz.
Also the governor is set to ondemand.
Any thoughts on this. Any other tweaks I should do to make it much better. Franco kernel was using interactive governor.
Also the GPU is ocd to 485 and stock is 400 max.
Any comments to tweak the kernel better or Tue stock setting are good!
Thanks for help
