4.2 custom rom paranoid - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am using cookies & cream 1.3.1 custom rom on my Nexus 7.
Now that 4.2 is out , I'd like to pass to a 4.2 based custom rom.
However, Cookies is discontinued and everybody is talking about a Paranoid Android ROM.
I am not able to find the thread.
Where is the exact thread for this rom ?
thx

Original development forum. C&C is discontinued in name only since Aaron said he'll be merging many of its features into PA 3.0.

Paranoid Android 2.99 thread is here.
And this is the thread for the earlier version (2.0-2.54) of Paranoid Android that's based on Android 4.1.

thanks. But this thread is in Galaxy Nexus forum.
So I assume it's not fine for Nexus 7 , is it ?
Thanks.

thanks. That's it
I think...

Paranoid Android runs fine on the Nexus 7. Just download and flash the grouper zip file. I'm staying on 4.1.2 because of too many issues with 4.2's emulated, fused, and symlinked directory structure, so I'm running Paranoid Android 2.54 instead of 2.99 beta 5.1.

thanks for this feedback.
when do you think it will be safe ffor moving to 4.2. ?

Maybe a month for most users.. CWM, TWRP, and Stickmount have workarounds already, I understand.
I'm reading my data from a USB flash drive, using an app that's unsupported, so i may never change to 4.2.

I'm using Stickmount. What's your app for that purpose ? What keeps you from using Stickmount anyway ?
BTw, should I update my recovery before updating to 4.2 ? (TWRP)

Not sure why the new file system freaks people out so much. For the most part you can just ignore all the symlinks etc. This type of file system is SOP on Linux (which is the embedded OS under android for those that don't know)
The intention of Google was for people to use /sdcard/0 for file management if you are the original/first user. That is not that hard a change from /sdcard is it?
Now that the recoveries are updated there is even less reason to avoid the file system. And perhaps the best reasons not to avoid is that this is the new file system moving forward.
For people who flash and tweak they especially need to gain an understanding rather than avoid it.
Exglynco, this is not directed directly to you. You just happened to express a dislike of the 4.2 file system.

Clean ROM 3.0 - Leankernel 0.8.x

Ezas,
I actually upgraded to Android 4.2 the morning it went public, and went through the learning curve with all the other early adapters. I lost root, lost my CWM custom recovery and backups, and couldn't see my apps data on my flash drive for a week or more until Stickmount was patched to work with 4.2.
So, I've been through the learning curve, and rejected 4.2, because it doesn't do what I want it to do. I'm storing 10gb of backups and apps data on flash drives connected to my 8gb and 16 gb N7s. I use the orphaned Directory Bind app to bind the source directories on my flash drives to phantom target directories on my N7s in 4.1.2.
In 4.2, Directory Bind will bind the true source directory path (e.g. /mnt/shell/emulated/0/usbStorage/sdb1/xxx) to the phantom target path,(/sdcard/xxx) but my apps don't read their data properly, and Directory Bind won't accept the true target path (/mnt/shell/emulated/0/xxx).
mrmrmrmr, I do use Stickmount, but not with 4.2.

Android 4.2

hey guys, so i know just a few posts below me there's a topic about when 4.2 will come to the N7. But what i'm wondering is if anyone has gotten their hands on the 4.2 GAPPS or anything of the sort, such as the new 4.2 keyboard and the 4.2 camera (not that the camera would be much use on an N7). I have the 4.2 GAPPS, keyboard and camera running on my S3, can i just use those same .zip files and flash them on my N7? or does it not just work that way.

The apps can be flashed on any device running 4.1 or later
Link
Be careful mate. I flashed the 4.2 gapps and once i rebooted i was constantly getting force closes on all the apps that got flashed.
My device was a real mess. I have not tried the separate apps like keyboard etc so i cant comment on them.
Edit...i did not flash the ones that the fellow member linked you to in the post above.
The ones in that link say the for any androud 4.1 device so you should be ok.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Ah, I assumed the OP already had the apps in the link I posted as he said about his S3 and the thread linked was in the S3 forum.
So yeah, make sure you're using the apps from the link and you should be fine as the post says its for any device running 4.1 or over. If you're unsure you could always perform a nandroid backup beforehand in case anything does go wrong.
yeah, that link is where I got the GAPPS from. I guess I didn't see the part about being able to flash it on anything. lol
thanks a bunch

Pdroid?

Reading about pdroid and from what I gather, you can't use it with our stock ROM even if you have root. Any devs or more knowledgeable people who can tell me how to compile a stock rooted ROM that includes pdroid?

or... for that matter, why is it that none of the roms seem to be integrating pdroid/openpdroid?
I have tried the autopatcher on several different roms, and none have patched properly.
I feel like this is a very good feature, but I am starting to feel as if I am in the minority.
Have I missed any roms with pdroid in them?
Maybe its still too buggy to be integrated into a ROM - regardless, I'm going to see if I can get something going tonight when I have a few hours. I've never compiled Roms before tho so I doubt I'll be successful. If I am I'll find a way to share it

I have patched Primerunner rom, PA rom and Steve's PUB rom with OpenPdroid and Autopatcher through ApG
Don.t think Collegedev has pushed Pdroid to 4.2.1 in Autopatcher yet but am sure openpdroid and pdroid are now interacting on how to move it forward...
Steve's Pub rom 5th Feb..fully patched no errors.....Primefrunner and PA.2.99 patched with 1 or 2 error fixes but successfully patched..
I'm running Steve's Pub rom patched with Openpdroid and this is an Antutu score for reference ...running very smooth
Uploaded Patches

Above is link for rom use Krait version
Here is the patches for Steve's pub rom
You will also need Pdroid manager apk to control and monitor..
Remember YOU do this because YOU want to
It's working perfect for me
So it wouldn't be possible to patch stock rooted 4.2.1? Or the upcoming 4.2.2? Only aokp and aosp?

i looked for a few threads about pdroid and i still don't get how i make this thing work on cm10.1 or paranoid android or other roms.
I'm also interested in integrating openpdroid or pdroid, does anyone have opinion between the two projects?
Also in the same vein, the fugumod kernel on Galaxy Nexus looks really good. A similar hardened kernel would be nice to see on Nexus 4, unless one exists already?

OK, I made it and it works!
1) Download mako rom from link above.
2) Download gapps.
3) Download those 2 attached files.
4) Move all files to phone storage.
5) Make a nandroid backup.
6) Full wipe.
7) Flash by this order:
* Rom
* Gapps
* ....restore.zip (attached file)
* ...update.zip (attached file)
8) Wipe dalvik cache
9) Reboot
10) Install from play store the PDroid Manager
That's is.
hmm

THIS. very interested in 4.2.2. I am using the mysterious aokp 4.2.2 right now, and I LOVED pub, but I don't like downgrading. As frustrating as that may be sometimes... case in point, DANG I really miss AVRCP. driving around and my jvc head unit always says 'no name'
I guess my main question is why are more developers not integrating this into their roms? Seems like a valuable security enhancement.
(Please, don't get me wrong. I am not complaining, and I love and appreciate the work that goes into development. I am genuinely curious if their is some reason preventing integration.)
Finally got open pdroid to patch successfully on both mysterious aokp 4.2.2 2/19 release, and on pa 3.0. happy happy camper. Facebook messenger now says I am most definitely not at another girl's house when I message my girlfriend. jk of course.

How do I run auto patcher on Win 7 without the ApG tool
Hi,
I downloaded the latest ApG tool from here: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31648393&postcount=690
I had already installed the latest JDK/JRE along with Cygwin on my PC (with some help from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28196231&postcount=104).
However, when I run ApG, it insists on downloading Java and Cygwin once again! The total download it wants to make is some 250 MB. While the size of the download is not an issue, I do want to know why ApG is insisting on downloading something that has already been installed. Is there some mistake with my installation? Or has the ApG team missed out on this basic error check?
Apart from this, if I want to auto patch a ROM using auto patcher on Win 7 (WITHOUT ApG), how do I go about it? Like I said, I already have Java and Cygwin installed on my machine.
Would appreciate any help or guidance on this topic.
Thanks in advance!
Does anyone know of any other thread on this topic? I've not been able to find other threads in Q&A related to openpdroid.

I think the reason the Apg tool downloads it's own copy of Java and cgwin is because it was designed to be a stand alone solution. I've been using it since it started supporting 4.2 based roms and it works great. Sorry I can't help with patching a rom without using the tool. It would probably be easier to install Ubuntu in a virtual machine than to figure it out using cgwin.
There is an openpdroid thread in the main android section of these forums. Sorry i cant get you a link right now as I'm on my phone and searching isn't really practical from the xda app.
I guess I'll just have to go ahead and let the app do its magic the way it wants . Thanks anyways for your response. I did think about the VM solution, but that seemed not worth the effort. I'll post a better solution if I find one (on installation without the tool).

Anyone that had lost data can you give me some information. Which acmeinstaller version did you use? Are you still on the smaller partition or did you upgrade? Im still on the i believe it's 400mb system part and haven't upgraded to the larger partition and still yet to loose data. It also could be the way kitkat mounts the partition now. After the inital loose of data did you experience it again? I'm trying to boil this down and having issues pinpoint it as i have yet to loose anything. The more information I can gather the quicker i can fix this issue. Thanks all for testing and helping me out getting this great device updated to the latest OS.
Thanks for this ROM - I have standard partition size and CWM and had no data loss, clean installed. Running well ☺

I tested it briefly and came from datamedia build of 10.2. I did system wipe and install using milaq's datamedia version of CWM. I had no major problems with the install and no lost media as far as I know. Looking forward to testing it again, when it gets a little more stable.
Is everyone just using the 4.3 gapps or is there a 4.4 gapps?

Hey Flintman,
I only lost the data just once so far, if you want I could test out a reinstall. I installed Kitkat by wiping system data and cache and flashing the Rom and gapps through recovery. I already had a 600MB partition but was monitoring the free space left. I should also note that I used CWM to advance restore my data partition from my Evervolv 4.3.1 backup. This seems to be working fine.
Because I use my tablet to test mods and games I had a lot of extra folders that disappeared. These were all added by me like, Dos Games folders about a dozen, image files, Beta apks and the Rom and gapps, that were placed in the internal memory ect. All these files vanished, however files I added that were already in system folders stayed, like music, downloads and shows. It seems to just delete things that the user added into non system or app related folders.
Thanks for letting us take this fun test drive, I was all backed up before I started

This was the info I compiled about Flintmans fantastic Test Build. I had a few notes and warnings for users, I will need to update it with a link to this new thread.
Edit: I updated the video for the newer build
Download 4.4 Kitkat Gapps here:
Notes:Low to Medium battery drain(-4mA to -30mA) h/w video, Test Build Make a Backup!, Automated Updater, Audio plays with the screen off, Camera, No Bluetooth.
Note: Windows users may need to do the following in order to attach the Touchpad with the USB cable.
1. Go into the Device manager. You will see "MTP USB Device" under portable devices.
2. Right Click it and select update driver software
3. Select Browse my computer for driver software.
4. Select Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
5. Select USB Mass Storage Device then click next.
and/or
6.To transfer files to PC, turn on USB mass Storage from the USB connection notification on the Android device.
Note(Important): (This might be fixed now) Backup and transfer all your SDcard files to PC. This is a testing build and could wipe files from your SDcard data.
[Note(Important): I would recommend increasing the size of your System Partition for this build. After my install I had 398/400MB free, so Flash the 512MB zip below or use Tailor to adjust the size.
Note(Important): This is an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) rom not a CyanogenMod (CM) rom. Dirty flashing an AOSP rom over a CM rom can causes errors and rebooting issues. Always do a clean install when moving from CM to AOSP and vise versa.
Flash through recovery to change the partition size to 512MB(Gradular&codycoyote)
Flintmans Posts about the new Pre-Beta Build here:
I did a clean install with the standard CWM recovery and had no loss of data or files that i can find. I also restored my apps with TiBU and everything came back good.
The Quadrant score came in a lot lower than the first test build, 1500 (first test build was 2350). The CPU portion is what suffered the most, the other portions seemed normal. It doesn't seem slower than normal though.
I haven't found any problems with any apps.
Great job, thanks!

Hey Flintman,
Would you clear up some confusion about this build. I've seen a post over in the Evervolv 4.3 thread and also over in Rootzwiki. Is this build of 4.4 a traditional build like your 4.3 build or a data-media build that is going to require the data-media version of CWM and resizing partitions like the Milaq 4.3? Thanks

Hi,
I experienced loss of data, much like as reported another member here, I only lost the folders that were added by me, it also removed the TWRP back up folder, however folders that are the usual like Music, Download remained as they were, however, the gallery app refused to load any images.
In between the reboots, I connected the TouchPad to PC and noticed something peculiar, after the very first boot, it showed about 9GB free, the same was on TWRP too, even though my folders were all gone, and after the next reboot on being connected to PC it showed me about 17GB free.
My install method was using TWRP, system wipe and flashing the zips,
I have extended the system and data partitions using the Tailor method to 512mb and 2.5gb respectively.
For now, I am back on 4.3 but would like to be able to help test out if there are any fixes that you are trying. Once again, thanks for the all the good work on these ROMs :good:
You know I think TWRP is the cause if data loss just reading peoples experiences in this thread. CWM FTW!

Apparently it's an issue with jellybean rather then CM0.1; some fixes might be try inserting your sim card into a spare phone that uses a lower version of android (gingerbread/froyo/ics) or a different os and save the contacts there, and send them over text or bluetooth.
So I found another problem with CM 10.1: I can't use my SD card. It gets recognized under Settings -> Storage, but I can't play music from it, and I can't view files in it from the file browser. Is this a known issue (one that other people are experiencing) with the 9/20 build of CM 10.1 for this phone, and if so, is there a later build that fixes it?
It's not a big deal since all of my music is on an iPod I carry with me (usually), and I don't do anything else on my phone that needs more than a few MBs of space, but it's annoying.

It's not a big deal since all of my music is on an iPod I carry with me (usually), and I don't do anything else on my phone that needs more than a few MBs of space, but it's annoying.

I'm on the 09/20 build and SD card works fine. Perhaps you need to format your sd card so that its compatible with android; I believe it should be formatted to FAT32, and try using Root browser (free from play store) and go to extSdCard and the files should be there given that the sd-card is working. There are more builds after 09/20 but since the original dev has not reuploaded them to goo (or goo has deleted them by accident) we're stuck with 09/20 until I can build a version of cm myself (I'm somewhat close to it).
I have a few of these phones and they are great, I cant believe we don't have more devs on these for a clean unbloated rom. Let us know if you come up with something. :_)
Just a quick update; I'm done exams which means I could start my attempts at porting over CM10.2 again. I had some issues applying a patch needed to enable STE Hardware, so I just manualIly downloaded the files to the correct places for the time being (which should get help me get past the build-error I was seeing before). I'm compiling a build now, and hopefully I don't run into any build errors and can test in on my phone.

Is pac the only legit rom available for this phone? I'd really like to see a stock version of jelly bean...

There is stock firmware, unless you mean an AOSP version? I don't think any of the U8500 based phones have AOSP built, so porting it over would be difficult. There's also CM10.1 available for the phone with working camera (no video camera), issues with audio at times (which requires a reboot). I'm working on CM10.2, but running into some kernel issues, so I yet have to see to how that goes.

I managed to find an odin flashable rom somewhere that includes su so that's what I'm running in the mean time. I tried both the roms in the o.p.
Pac was pretty close to what I like in a rom but it's abandoned so there's no chance of the bugs getting fixed.
This is such a great little phone and now that metro is giving them away for free I assumed xda would be blowing up with development but I guess not...
I'll be checking this thread everyday and I'll test out any thing you come up with. really looking forward to your rom.
I managed to compile CM10.2 and it did indeed boot. I'm not yet releasing it because camera is missing. But other then that everything seems fine, does require more testing, and I've been working non-stop for a couple of hours now (it's 4am here, lol).
Edit:
Changelog:
V.1.0.0
- initial build of CM10.2
- SmartAss v2 governor (should help with battery life) (unjust already had this there, and I could add in other governors in future)
List of Current Bugs:
- missing camera (have an idea on how to fix it )
- random boot logo appears (i believe this was on pac as well, will look into it)
- torch not working (dependent on camera working as well but since camera isn't working, torch isn't working as well)
- sound issues (like CM10.1 most likely)
I'll make a new thread for this rom, once camera is working, and we could start from there. I've yet to test out calling and bluetooth.
Just a reminder; I'm learning how to dev as I'm going so please don't expect nightlies (slow upload rate + lack of free time + lack of knowledge) and fixes to be posted suddenly.
Excellent. and thanks for not adding another half baked ROM to the list.

Thanks, and aha, yeah I figured. Originally one of the patches for multimedia didn't go through, so I figured that was the culprit, but now that I applied and recompiling, I'm running into more build errors, but I'll get through them.
I just messaged you,

@Unjustified Dev Thanks for helping @Exothermic. I'm sure he and the whole T599 community would highly appreciate your support on getting an updated CM ROM with less bugs. Thank you again. As always if you need help with testing I'm here for you.

Motorola Xoom Oreo Rom Development

Ok so i have started developing a oreo rom (Android 8.0) for motorola i have made the zip to flash it and will flash and give you guys an update on whats working and whats not and if the zip file works. I started developing about a week ago so nothing will work properly yet.
Update: Forgot to mention its lineage os 15 but I used files from 14.1 I'll be a day or two for a zip file again
Update: Could be months before this comes out cause my computer has 4gb of ram I'm getting a new one soon and putting Ubuntu on to it I know this is frustrating for you but I promise the Xoom will be running Oreo smoothly soon.
Just so you know I'm not making stuff up
I'm sorry for stuffing up I can't send link for prove of video yet
Thank you.
Just read a blog post, https://www.xda-developers.com/android-go-old-android-8-1-oreo/ and came here to ask if anybody is building Oreo ROM for Xoom. It will be awesome to run slimmed down Oreo on Xoom. Its a great device and solid as a rock.
Since I installed Omni Stingray, DS has been using it every day for YouTube.
Thanks again in advance.
With Tegra 2 and 1gb of RAM the Xoom can barely run Lollipop. I don't see it happening for a device this old with so few users.
I am interested in it, but I think it would be very slow as it has only 1GB of RAM.
How about Oreo optimized with Android Go?
I can test it if needed. I have a xoom in a box somewhere. it could be fun
It sounds amazing, it would be exciting to see Oreo on the Xoom tablet.
Android Go might make this plausible; look at the specs of the devices it's been released on.

Any news? I would love to upgrade my Xoom 2 so that it will run Free Flight Pro and other newer programs.
Exciting

Have you made progress? I want to keep using my Wingray/Stingray (s) - thanks.
This would be quite nice. I feel the Xoom quickly outgrew itself. Android was kinda clunky back then: low UI FPS, UI V-SYNC, and lacking overall system hierarchy. It would be refreshing to have a modern firmware build on an older device such as this.
It would really prove the dexterity of the the Android operating system. Not to mention, with the Android Go launcher sitting atop, it might actually be a phesable project for a device with such low hardware specs.
Also, I have mistakenly flashed the stock Honeycomb 3.0.0. Apparently this version of Honeycomb disables access to the MicroSD card reader and thus I cannot flash a ROM onto it from a external media source. I found a method Online for flashing a ROM from the internal NAND. You must use the ADB from a Terminal/Command Prompt to transfer the system image from a PC/Linux Box to the device and then flash it from there.
I do not have a good backup, and the recovery partition is currently blank. So I have been searching for a valid stock ROM of Honeycomb 3.1 with Gapps files included to restore it back to stock but with Root access.
If anyone could assist me that would be great!
what recovery did you use?
Wingray

Was gonna keep surprise but yes I'm working on it i put Oreo on it actually it was very slow so i gave up for a couple of months so yeah that was the delay I'm back into it now though and I'm making the android go version as of right now. I was developing on Wingray so no idea if this will work on Stingray.
GO GO GO waiting for ur rom

I'm using this 7.1.2 from crDroid that works pretty well - can be found on this site - but it is still outdated. Was hoping not to have to recycle this little tablet that I love but it is getting slow slow slow

Same here when it comes to speed. I have one stock, no root running 4.0.4 & another rooted running OmniRom 5.1.1, its not to bad but could be better. Hopefully CLOUTMAN will have some success getting Oreo in some form on out tablets
